Many exciting developments have taken place here at Dr. SRCISH. We celebrated our 41st anniversary in October with Sri T.A. Shravana, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Council and Sri B.G. Nanda Kumar, IASR, Former Secretary, Dept. of Information and Publicity Kannada and Culture, GoK were the Chief Guests and Dr. M.K. Bhandi, Ph.D., Administrative and Information Officer, Siddaganga Institute of Technology was Guest of Honour. Dr. SR Chandrasekhar Memorial Award was conferred on Sri P.C. Mohan and felicitated all our donors on this occasion. The meeting of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust was held on 31st October, 2018 at Century Club, and issues related to developmental activities, allocation of funds and grants for various activities and academic achievements of the institute were discussed.

Sunaad School for the Hearing Impaired conducted a 3-day RCI CRE Seminar on “Methods and Techniques for Teaching Language”. The BN Gupta Research Centre conducted a workshop on MATLAB for staff and students. The Dept. of Speech Language Studies conducted a one-day workshop on FEES (Fiber optic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing). The Psychology Unit successfully completed an add-on Certificate Course on “Management of Children with Learning Disabilities” for parents. All departments continued to strive towards academic and clinical excellence. Thanks to all our donors and well-wishers for your generous support!

Awards & Accolades Mrs. Gayathri Bai K. Mrs. Gayathri Bai is an Asst. Teacher in Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired for the last 20 years. She has been preparing High School children to face Board Examinations. Her Service has been recognized by the Govt. of Karnataka and she was awarded with “Proficiency in Excellence in service as special Educator for the year 2019 Awarded. She was honored by Honorable Chief Minister H.D. Kumarswamy on World Disabled Day (3rd December 2018) She was given a cash prize and a memento as token of Recognition for her service in the field of teaching Children with Hearing Impairment.

Founder’s Day Celebration The Founder’s Day Celebration, Dr. S.R.C. Memorial Award Ceremony, and Donors Meet were held on Thursday 11th October, 2018. The program started with cultural events of students from Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired and Dr. S R Chandrasekhar institute of speech and hearing. The Chief Guests for the event were Sri T.A. Shravana, Hon’able Member of Legislative Council and Sri B.G. Nanda Kumar IASR, Former Secretary, Dept. of Information and Publicity Kannada and Culture, GoK. The Guest of Honour was Dr. M.K. Bhandi, Ph.D., Administrative and Information Officer Siddaganga Institute of technology. In his welcome address, Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Hon. Chairman and Director of Dr. S R Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, said that the founder, Dr. S R Chandrasekhar had injected quality and devotion to work as main values in the function of the Institute. He said that the institute has grown to this level only because of the dedicated staff and the benevolent donors including Lions and Rotary Clubs and other philanthropists while acknowledging the grant received from Govt. of Karnataka. Dr. S.R.C. Memorial Award was conferred on Sri P.C. Mohan, for his efforts in promoting the cause of the poorer section of the society. Sri P.C. Mohan in his speech praised the vision of the founder Dr. S R Chandrasekhar and his contribution towards society. Sri T.A. Sharavana, MLA Govt. of Karnataka lauded the vision of the founder Dr. S R Chandrashekar and the Institute’s contribution towards hearing and communication disabilities. Sri B.G. Nanda Kumar addressed the gathering and lauded the donors and trustees for their contribution. Dr. M.K. Bhandi, in his speech, appreciated management and staff for their work in the field of disabilities. The “Best Alumni Award” was announced and was conferred on Dr. Roshni Pillai and Mr. Anurag Kumar by Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman Dr. S R C ISH. All donors, including Sr. Pathi Sridhar, Mr. D.K. Professional Development Fiber optic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing Training The Department of Speech and Language Studies conducted a one-day workshop on FEES (Fiber optic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) on 04-October-2018. Inhouse faculty Mrs. Mereen Rose Babu (Assistant Professor) delivered a detailed lecture on “Physiology Of Swallowing And Subjective Assessment of Swallowing” and Dr. Anita Reddy (H.O.D., Speech and Language Studies) delivered a lecture on “Flexible/Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of swallowing: indications and contraindications”. We invited a guest speaker, Dr. Pradeep Kumar (MBBS, MS, DLO, DNB), who is currently working as a Medical Director at Meenakshi ENT Speciality Centre, Bangalore. He Dr. Anitha Reddy, deliver her talk delivered lecture on “Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of swallowing: Instrumentation and Clinical examination” and demonstrated FEES to the participants. All staff and PG students had hands-on training with FEES. It was a very profitable learning experience for all.

MATLAB Workshop The B.N. Gupta Research Centre of Dr. SRCISH organized a workshop on MATLAB on 14th and 15th October, 2018 for staff and postgraduate students. Mrs. Sweeti, Ph.D. Scholar, IIT Delhi (Asst. Professor), Rajeev Gandhi Institute of Technology, Bangalore, introduced MATLAB and Digital signal processing to the delegates and Dr. Arivudai Nambi, Associate Professor, KMC Mangalore spoke on the application of MATLAB in the field of Audiology and Speech language Pathology.

Professional Development 3–Day RCI-CRE Programme on “Methods and Techniques of Teaching Language” A Three Day RCI-CRE Seminar (State Level) on “Methods And Techniques of Teaching Language” was organized by Dr. Chandrashekar Institute of Speech & Hearing from 12th to 14th December, 2018.
Evaluating of Language Development in Children with HI”. The day’s programme was concluded with a discussion and summing up of the contents of the speeches of the resource persons.
The event began with the inaugural function on 12th December, 2018. Smt. Gayathri Raveesh, Zonal Coordinator, RCI, Tumkur, was the Chief Guest and Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech & Hearing Trust, Bangalore was the President. Dr. M.N. Nagaraj, CEO, Dr. Chandrashekar Institute of Speech & Hearing, Mrs. Padma Prabha, Head Mistress, Sunaad School for the Hearing Impaired, were present on the dais. The Inaugural function started with a customary invocation song by Harsha Dev, student of Morther’s Training. Mrs. Padma Prabha, welcomed the dignitaries in her welcome speech and honoured the Guests with bouquets as a token of appreciation for their presence. The traditional Lighting of Lamp followed the welcome speech. Smt. Gayathri Raeesh shared her experiences in the field of Hearing Impairment, the significance of CRE points that help teachers to update their knowledge to teach children the advanced teaching skills by conducting workshops and seminars to share the knowledge. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh and Dr. M.N. Nagaraj addressed the gathering. Mrs. Drakshyani, HM, Primary School, proposed Vote of Thanks.
Mrs. Rathna Shetty, Co-ordinator, Mothers’ Training, was the Chair Person on 13th December, 2018. Mrs. Malavika Anakkathil Anil, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Audiology, KMC, Mahe, Mangalore spoke about “Understanding Language Delays in Children with Hearing Impairment”. The session ended with an interactive discussion on many issues regarding teaching language to HI children. Dr. Sudhin Karuppali, Associate Professor, Dept. of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology, KMC, Mangalore spoke about “Language Testing, Interpretation & Intervention Planning.” The final speaker of the second day was Mrs. Prema Kumari, Lecturer and Camp Coordinator, Dr.SRCISH, Banglore. Her topic was “Basic Language Competence (BLC) & Advanced Language Competence”. The session ended with a fantastic speech by a girl with Profound Hearing Loss, who spoke language fluently to express her hard journey to master the language.

The first resource person was Ms. Pragna Kodgi Udupa, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Speech Language Studies, Dr.SRCISH, Bangalore. She spoke about “The Development of Normal Language Milestones”. Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat, Vice-Principal, HOD, Hearing Studies, Dr.SRCISH, Bangalore spoke about Language Development Approaches for Children with HI. Ms. Deborah Athaide, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Speech Language Studies, Dr.SRCISH delivered a talk on “Importance of

Dr. Vijetha, Reader in Special Education, All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore spoke about “Usefulness of latest methods of teaching language to children with HI.” Mrs. Gayathri Bai, Teacher, Sunaad School, was the final speaker who spoke on Methods of teaching Picture composition for children with hearing impairment. At the end of the seminar, Dr. M.N. Nagaraj, CEO, Dr.SRCISH, gave away the certificates to all the delegates who attended and Mrs. Gowramma proposed vote of thanks. The participants left with a lot of knowledge and confidence to teach children with hearing impairment.

BAHA Orientation Programme
A BAHA orientation program was organized by the Department of Hearing Studies on 2911-2018. Jennifer Brown, Market Development Manager, Cochlear Global Team, United States, visited the institute and oriented staff and students on candidacy for BAHA, the latest technology in bone conduction hearing, and overview of the BAHA System, and she also discussed the candidate evaluation process. Events & Celebrations at ISH Children’s Day was celebrated in the AVT Unit on November 14th. Various competitions were held including solo dance, solo song and speeches on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Dr. Madhuri Gore handed over the prizes to children. On this day Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired organized a special programme along with the students from Diploma (Special Education). The programme involved an entertaining dance and skit. The life of our First Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and diverse qualities were explained to the students. 20th Nov., 2018 on the Occasion of International Day of Disabilities, Department of Women and Child Development, organized Sports Day at Kanteerava Indoor Stadium, Bangalore for children who are differently-abled. Sunaad School children, and children for the ASD and NIOS School participated the events and bagged prizes and certificates. In October, parents of children enrolled in the DEALL programme organized the Dusshera celebrations. Diwali was celebrated in the Psychology Unit & DEALL by lighting diyas, and by parents and children making craft items.

Updates from Sunaad School On Oct 2nd Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Students of Sunaad school enthusiastically took part; teachers explained his contribution in getting independence of our country, INDIA. A 1-month demo classes training programme was organized to train Diploma Students on teaching methods at Sunaad School in the month of Nov. 2018. On 22nd and 24th of Nov., 2018, the Department of Women and Child Development, organized a ‘Dance & Drawing Competition’ at Bal Bhavan. Students from Sunaad School participated in the competitions and bagged prizes and certificates. On 27.11.18 Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation (ALIMCO), a PSU under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, organized a programme at Bal Bhavan, Cubbon Park, Bangalore. Under Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana and Samajika Adhikaritha Shibira (ADIP) scheme ALIMCO gave away 93 pairs of Hearing Aids to 93 students of Sunaad School. On 17.11.18 and 15.12.18 Cognizant team trained Sunaad School teachers on basic use of computers. On 19.11.18 post graduate students from Azim Premji University visited Sunaad School as part of their project work. On 3.12.18 Sunaad School students and teachers participated in a rally organized by Karnataka Disabled and Care Giver Federation affiliated to NPRW. On 31st Oct, an inter-house Rangoli Competition was held for students from 1st to 10th std and on 30th Nov. a craft competition was held for student to showcase their creativity. On 17.11.18 and 24.11.18 Sunaad School organized an oral heath check up for all Sunaad School students. Doctors and students from Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Science and Hospital, Bangalore did the oral check up.

Updates from The Balance & Vestibular Clinic Dr. S R Chandrasekhar institute of Speech and Hearing started a Balance and Vestibular Clinic on 17/09/18. The clinic runs during the week in collaboration with the ENT, Physiotherapy, Psychology Units and Department of Hearing Studies. We do our best to prioritize urgent cases to avoid unnecessary discomfort. As well as being a diagnostic clinic, the Vestibular clinic can help with; BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positioning Vertigo), Unilateral vestibular dysfunction, Bilateral vestibular dysfunction, idiopathic bilateral vestibular loss, sequential viral neuritis, aging, Brain stem and cerebellar stroke or tumor, MS, skull and TBI, migraines vertigo, etc. The center in general assess individuals with balance related disorders using Subjective Vestibular Evaluation, Positional vertigo tests, cVEMP, oVEMP and ENG. Simultaneously, is a renowned place for vestibular rehabilitation. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is an exercise-based treatment program designed to promote vestibular adaptation and substitution. The goals of VRT are 1) to enhance gaze stability, 2) to enhance postural stability, 3) to improve vertigo, and 4) to improve activities of daily living. VRT facilitates vestibular recovery mechanisms: vestibular adaptation, substitution by the other eye-movement systems, substitution by vision, somatosensory cues, other postural strategies, and habituation. The key exercises for VRT are head-eye movements with various body postures and activities, and maintaining balance with a reduced support base with various orientations of the head and trunk, while performing various upper-extremity tasks, repeating the movements provoking vertigo, and exposing patients gradually to various sensory and motor environments. VRT is indicated for any stable but poorly compensated vestibular lesion, regardless of the patient’s age, the cause, symptom duration and intensity. There is no difference in final outcome whether the cause is vestibular suppressants, visual and somatosensory deprivation, immobilization, old age, concurrent central lesions, or if there is long recovery from symptoms. As long as exercises are performed several times every day, even brief periods of exercise are sufficient to facilitate vestibular recovery. Updates from Sign Language Unit The last quarter of 2018 was marked with new activities. Amidst the October festivities, a client’s Company, “24 X 7” invited staff of the department to participate in their open shop sale for differently abled people. Shruthi, a student from the department of Sign language exhibited various art works that were highly appreciated by the host and the audience. There were newly joined candidates to the courses offered by the department like Grade II sign language, Grade I interpreter and also functional sign language course. The sign language training for students in Diploma (Special Education) and B.Sc. also continues. A three-day workshop was held in the month of November. 15 teachers from different parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh enrolled for the workshop held at Samarthanam, an NGO. The participants were trained in ISL. A Student with hearing impairment who had enrolled for the Grade I Sign language course, served as a speaker at the RCI-CRE workshop on “Techniques and Methods of teaching language” conducted at the Institute by Sunaad School. Her experiences were shared on the stage and were very well appreciated by the audience. The need for sign language for the Deaf individuals was highlighted. Staff from the department attended the Disability Day Drogram conducted by Schneider Electric Attibele in the month of December. Three Differently abled persons in area of vision, hearing and physical served as the panel members and staff of the sign language department served as interpreters for the Deaf. Mother’s Training Center Oct 2nd, Gandhi Jayanti a national festival was celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi Ji photo was garlanded and Meera Bhajan was sung which created a patriotic atmosphere. Children enthusiastically took part in the Gandhi Jayanti event celebration teachers explained his contribution in getting independence to our country. November 12th Deepavali festival was celebrated; teachers narrated the stories connected with the festival. Mothers and children were cautioned about the safety measures while busting the crackers. Mothers prepared sweets for Deepavali festival at MTC. Godess Lakshmi was worshipped and sweets were distributed as prasadam.
November 14th the Birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was celebrated, Chief Guests were Dr.Madhuri Gore and Dr. Bhuvana, children came to the center wearing new dresses, Nehru’s photo was garlanded and teachers explained about the significance of children’s day. Sports competition was held winners were given prizes; prizes were sponsored by Mrs Madhuri Gore. 21.12.18 Christmas was celebrated, Mr. T. Suresh was a chief Guest, Crib was made and children cut the cake. Updates from Psychology Unit The Psychology Unit has successfully completed a 30- hour Add-on Certificate Course on “Management of Children with Learning Disabilities” for parents. The purpose of the course is to sensitize parents and help them prepare Individualized Educational Plans for children with Learning Disabilities thereby maximizing these children’s potential and promoting achievement of educational goals. 6 mothers have successfully completed the course. Sash Corner The Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) conducted a number of fun-filled events including the Indoor sports competition and the Diwali celebrations; however students also had to bid farewell to some well-loved staff. The Indoor Sports Competition was conducted from the 9th of October onwards to kick-start the race for the Sports Trophy of the academic year. A number of competitions including carom, table-tennis, badminton, darts, etc. were conducted as a part of the indoor sports competition and students had an amazing time trying to win prizes for their respective classes. On the 13th of November, students celebrated Diwali by distributing sweets to all the teaching and non-teaching staff and wishing them a prosperous time in the year to come In the months of October and November students also had to bid adieu to some of their dear teachers Ms. Roxanne and Mrs. Sreemathi as they embarked on new journeys in their lives. They thanked them for guiding, and teaching through the years but most importantly for being great friends and companions to the students. Suicide Is Preventable
Someone ends their life every 40 seconds somewhere in the world. Being a teenager has never been easy. India tops the world in teen suicides as exam stress and depression become key factors, but other urban pressures are also taking a heavy toll. Every 90 minutes a teenager tries to commit suicide in India. Many of these attempts are cries for attention, help, and love. But every six hours, one succeeds.

Parents, teachers, and friends are in the position to pick up on these signs. It is important not to take these warning signs lightly or promise to keep them secret. Youth who feel suicidal are not likely to seek help directly; however, parents, school personnel, and peers can recognize the warning signs and take immediate action to keep the youth safe. When a youth gives signs that they may be considering suicide, the following actions should be taken:

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among school age youth; there are a more suicide attempts than deaths by suicide. The majority of attempts go unreported because of stigma and shame. Suicide can be defined as a non-fatal, potentially injurious behavior that is self-directed, with the original intent to bring about death. Although a suicide attempt might not result in injury, attempted suicide is a critically dangerous event. Some people plan suicide attempts, while others are impulsive. Youth who are contemplating suicide frequently give warning signs of their distress. Most suicidal youth demonstrate observable behaviors that signal their suicidal thinking. These include: • Suicidal threats in the form of direct (“I am going to kill myself ”) and indirect (“I wish I could fall asleep and never wake up again”) statements. • Suicide notes and plans (including online postings) or searching online for methods of committing suicide • Prior suicidal behavior. • Making final arrangements (e.g., making funeral arrangements, writing a will, giving away prized possessions). • Preoccupation with death. • Feeling hopeless or depressed • Increasing use of drugs and/or alcohol • Changes in weight, appearance, or sleep habits • Gathering drugs, sharp objects, firearms, or other items that could be used to commit suicide or self-harm • Isolating themselves and withdrawing from friends • Visiting or calling people to say goodbye, and giving away prized possessions • Trouble concentrating and/or a drop in academic performance • Migraines, frequent stomachaches, or other physical complaints
• Remain calm. • Ask the youth directly if he or she is thinking about suicide (e.g., “Are you thinking of suicide?”). • Avoid being accusatory and instead focus on your concern for their well-being • Listen. • Reassure them that there is help and they will not feel like this forever. • Do not judge. • Provide constant supervision. Do not leave the youth alone. • Remove means for self-harm. No one should ever agree to keep a youth’s suicidal thoughts a secret and instead should tell an appropriate caregiving adult, such as a parent, teacher, or school psychologist. Parents should seek help from school or community mental health resources as soon as possible. School/college staff should take the student to a school-employed mental health professional. Stress Management, Positive Coping Skills, and Suicide Prevention. Positive coping skills are not something we are born with. It takes education, practice, and reinforcement for us to realize that some behaviors are beneficial and some are not. In family life, it is important to learn the positive coping skills that help individuals manage stress, support one another, and help cope with depression. Erratic, hormonal, dramatic teenage behavior can be difficult to distinguish from an adolescent who is in need of Psychotherapy/counselling. It is simple for parents to think their child is moving through a stage or having an issue with peers that will pass with time. Teenagers with a mood disorder, such as depression, often

Facts, Thoughts & Musings present themselves in a different way than an adult might expect, and in the middle of the difficult teenage years, the combination of mood changes and behavioral issues are easily overlooked, in our busy day-to-day lives, positive coping skills can be fleeting. Unfortunately, most often the family overlooks the signs of struggle that may have lifethreatening consequences. Mental illness is a problem we often tend to think of as an adult issue; however, 50 percent of psychological disorders develop before someone turns 14 years old. One out of every 12 teens between the ages of 12 and 17 are diagnosed with clinical depression. These adolescents typically suffer from symptoms for at least six months before any intervention is received Life skills training plays as a key protective factor for suicide and include critical thinking, stress management, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and coping skills. Activities that enhance these skills can help people as they face new challenges, such as economic stress, divorce, physical illness, and academic pressure.
Resilience is a related concept that includes traits such as a positive self-concept and optimism in addition to life skills. It is sometimes described as the ability to adapt to stress and adversity. Building life skills and resilience is one component of a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: CBT brings clarity to what an adolescent is thinking and feeling. CBT identifies the emotions that often result in a sense of isolation. Consequently, it identifies the self-defeating thoughts and assumptions that make life more difficult. CBT provides valuable insight for the depressed adolescent. In conclusion, adolescent suicide is preventable. The cure is awareness, knowledge, and access to resources. As individuals and as a society, we must do everything we can to reverse the current adolescent mental health crisis and its accompanying suicide trends. The Psychology Unit regularly counsels school and college students who have suicidal thoughts, and also does life skill training and family therapy to help build positive coping strategies and resilience to cope with pressure.

Clinical Facilities
Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies. Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level. Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively. Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service. Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking. Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs. Our experts in the institute effectively carry out this specialised service. 32
Noise Measurement: Identifying ‘noise’ as a cause for hearing loss, our Institute provides services to measure the noise levels in factories, work places and public areas. Our experts with appropriate noise measuring equipment do extensive stury and report on the permissible or hazardous limits, by which measures can be taken to prevent hearing damages of the people in those environments.
Department of Speech Language Sciences Voice Clinic: Our Institute is adequately equipped with talent and technology to diagnose and treat voice disorders such as hoarseness, scratchy voice, breathy voice, difficulty with loudness, pain or discomfort while speaking or singing, etc. Endostroboscopy: The Institute is equipped with state of the art Endostroboscope facility to assess vocal cord vibration patterns, mucosal pliability, study the underlying layered structure of the vocal folds, etc. This accurate diagnostics help the patient to get the most appropriate treatment.
Speech Therapy Services Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing deals with a number of investigatory and treatment protocols related to speech disabilities. With eminent practitioners, it offers treatment and rehabilitative services to many disorders associated with speech. Misarticulation - a speech defect in which an individual substitutes, omits, adds or distorts the speech sounds which results in the speech being unintelligible. Stuttering - is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, disrupting the normal flow of speech, sometimes accompanied by struggling behaviors. Cleft lip and Palate - refers to a physical condition wherein a child is born with a split or torn lip(s) with a hole in the roof of the mouth leading to speech disorders. Cerebral Palsy (CP) - reflects a non progressive group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordinations due to anomaly of the developing brain.

Autism - a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior which manifests within the very first two years of life. Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain. Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth. Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent. Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing. Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.
Psychology Unit The Institute has eminent expertise to conduct developmental assessments on children to identify developmental delays (DQ/SQ). IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are conducted to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of an individual’s mental abilities. Intelligence Tests: Studies the general intellectual abilities of an individual to measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability. Personality test: Aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Behavior modification: Is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disibility Assessment: Evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child. Other Unique Specialized Services Reaching out beyond medical diagnostic and clinical services, the Institute has enlarged its commitment to the cause through founding and efficient management of schools that cater to specific needs : School for children with Autism and Learning Disability for slow learners. Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired that provides primary and middle school main-stream education in Kannada and English medium for hearing impaired children. Sign Language Training trains individuals with basic sign language skills necessary to communicate with individuals with hearing impairment and become professional interpreters for them through short term and diploma level courses in Indian Sign language. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) through which the institute provides coaching and training for individuals appearing for examinations conducted by NIOS, for out-of-school children with special needs. Mothers’ Training Centre that provides early and intensive intervention for young children with hearing impairment by providing adequate training for their mother. The services offered by the Institute are expanding meeting every emerging need in the society. Placement Cell - A separate cell that is well connected with the corporate world has been set up for finding rewarding and suitable jobs / careers for speech and hearing impaired adults. Mobile Camps and Outreach Screening Services are regularly conducted at neonatal wards of hospitals and nursing homes, schools, villages, community health centres, institutions and organisations which identify speech, hearing and learning problems. Physiotherapy: • Facilities available include ultrasound, massage, IFT, was therapy, CPM, Stimulation and TENS • Conditions that can be treated include low back ache, cervical spondylosis, knee pain (arthritis), shoulder injuries, stroke and other neurological conditions. Podiatric conditions like cerebral palsy, etc. 34
