Chairman’ s Note Happy New Year to all! The end of 2019 has indeed been eventful for us. We celebrated Founder’s Day on 8th November 2019 in honour of our beloved founder, Dr. S.R.Chandrasekhar and were honoured to have Hon’ble Sri N. Santhosh Hegde, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, Former Solicitor General of India, Former Lokayuktha, Govt. of Karnataka as the Chief Guest. The S.R.Chandrasekhar Memorial Award was awarded to Sri Sathish Manandi and the best Alumni Awards to Ms. Praveena Davis and Mr. Apurva kumar. 3 students who completed the fellowship programme in Cochlear Implant technology and Re/ Habilition received their certificates of completion and all donors and trustees were honoured on this occasion. The Department of Speech Language Studies successfully conducted one-day seminar on Neuro-imaging in Speech Language Pathology on 18th of November. A Faculty Development Programme on ‘Teachers Pedagogy’ was conducted for all faculty members of the institute on the 12th and 13th of December, 2019. We are pleased to report the recognition of the work of our faculty members at the international level with 4 presentations at the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), Annual International Convention, 2019. Inspections for the PhD programme under Bangalore North University, for RCI recognition of MASLP, BASLP, and PGDAVT courses, for UGC recognition were conducted this quarter. The PG Diploma Course in Auditory Verbal Therapy, BASLP & MASLP courses received recognition from Rehabilitation Council of India.

Founder’s Day Celebrations Founder’s Day, Dr. S.R.C. Memorial Award Ceremony and Donors Meet were held on Friday 08th November 2019. The program started with dance performances of students from Mothers’ Training Centre, Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired, and Dr. S.R.Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing. The Chief Guest for the event was Sri N. Santhosh Hegde, Hon’ble Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, Former Solicitor, General of India, Former Lokayuktha, Govt. of Karnataka. In his welcome address, Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman and Director of Dr. S.R.Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, spoke of the institute’s growth and mentioned activities that the Institute will undertake in the near future. He acknowledged the contribution of all donors and expressed his gratitude to them. Ln. V.S. Shanthavadhan, Treasurer, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, reminded the audience of the humble beginnings of the Institute and its growth thereafter. Dr.S.R.C.Memorial Award was conferred on Sri Sathish Manandi, Hon’ble Past President Rotary Bangalore Midtown, Partner, Sri Ram Distributors for his contribution to the Institute. The Best Alumni Awards instituted by Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, for the year were conferred on Mr. Apurva Kumar and Ms. Praveena Davis by Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Dr.S.R.C.ISH.

Ms. Sarah Spencer was felicitated for wining first place in solo singing in Cresindo 2k19, an inter college competition in Sindhi College. Ms. Helan set a university record for long jump at the Bangalore North University 2nd Annual Intercollegiate Athletics Championship. Mr. Suresh T., Associate Professor and Research coordinator, BNGRC delivered the vote of thanks for the event that ended with the National Anthem followed by lunch.

Professional Development Seminar on Neuro-imaging in Speech Language Pathology

The Seminar on “Neuro-imaging in Speech Language Pathology” held on 18th October 2019 was organized by the Dept. of Speech Language Studies of Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing.

The inaugural programme was presided over by Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust. Lion V.S. Shanthavadhan, Treasurer, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust also attended. Dr. G.R.K. Sarma, Professor of Neurology, St. John’s Medical College & Vice President ACIAN Trust was the Chief Guest, and Dr. B.N. Srikumar, Associate Professor, Dept. of Neurophysiology, NIMHANS & Treasurer, Society for Neuroscience- Bangalore Chapter was the Guest of Honour. Dr. M.N. Nagaraja, C.E.O., Dr. S.R.C.ISH gave the welcome address and Dr. N. Shivashankar, Clinical Director, Dr. S.R.C.ISH delivered an introductory note on the seminar. The Chief Guest and Guest of Honour were honoured by management committee members. Dr. Anita Reddy, Organizing Secretary & H.O.D. Speech Language Studies delivered the vote of thanks. A total of 158 delegates attended the seminar; these included 134 graduate and post graduate students, 9 professionals, and 15 staff from Dept. of SLS. Dr. Anita Mahadevan, Professor, Dept. of Neuropathology, NIMHANS, conducted the first session on ‘Human Brain: the inside story’. She discussed the different functions of the human brain and its development. The delegates also had the opportunity to view the anatomical landmarks and structures on brain specimens and relate the same

to the different functions of the brain. Specimens of the developing brain and disordered brain were also shown. At the end of her talk, Dr. Anita Mahadevan graciously donated a specimen of a human brain to the Dept. of SLS, Dr. S.R.C. ISH. Dr. Sandhya M., Associate Professor, Department of Neuroimaging and Interventional Radiology, NIMHANS, delivered a talk on ‘Neuroimaging techniques in communication disorders’. Her second lecture was titled ‘Neuroimages: What do they reveal?’ Delegates learned to distinguish between CT scan, and T1and T2 MRIs. Neuro-images of various lesions were displayed and explained. Dr. Faheem, Postdoctoral Fellow, Cognitive Neurosciences, NIMHANS, was the final speaker of the day. His lecture was titled ‘Neuro-imaging correlates of speech and language disorders: Case studies’. He presented the history along with the clinical findings and neuro-images for different cases so that correlations could be made to determine the diagnoses. The seminar was highly informative, interactive, and entertaining and was also a ‘Green’ event with minimal use of plastic. Delegates received ceramic mugs for use during and after the conference and used pencils instead of pens to take notes; all utensils used were either bio-degradable or reusable to reduce the waste generated from the event. The seminar was sponsored by the Society for Neuroscience- Bangalore Chapter, NIMHANS.

Talks / Workshops / Trainings conducted in the Institute: As part of celebrations for Alternative & Augmentative Communication Awareness month, the Department of Speech Language Studies conducted an hour long talk on 10th October, 2019 on “Use of Alternative Augmentative Communication”. Mrs. Smrithy Rajesh (Special Educator) delivered a beautiful and inspiring talk on ‘My Special Journey with Advaith’. She is the mother of Advaith, a child diagnosed with inadequate speech and language skills associated with ASD and ADHD”. She shared her journey which included accepting a special child, enrolling him in various intervention programs, working as a co-therapist, and adapting AAC technology (AVAZ) to improve her child’s communicative skills.

On 9/10/2019, Mr. Ram Subramanian from Kuwait delivered a talk on Vestibular Assessment. This was attended by the 3rd year BASLP and 2nd year M.Sc. Audiology and MASLP students along with the staff of the department of Hearing Studies.

Professional Development On 27-12-2019, Department of Speech Language Studies, Dr SRCISH, invited Dr. Javad Anjum from University of Mary, USA to deliver an hour long talk on “Procedures to be followed for pursuing PhD Abroad”. He motivated and addressed Post Graduate students regarding the same.

On 19/11/2019, Mr. Sashti Kumar from Cochlear India gave hands-on Training on BAHA to the staff of Department of Hearing Studies.

Events & Celebrations World Disability Day

On account of World Disability Day on 3rd December 2019, the Institute offered free Speech and Hearing Screening from 2nd December to 7th December 2019. A talk on “Empowering the Hearing and Speech Impaired for Jobs in the IT sector” was delivered by Mr. Shiva Jaygopal, Founder Chairman of WinVinaya Foundation. As per this year’s theme, “The future is accessible”, the talk focused on removing obstacles that stand in the way of the progress of people with disability especially those of persons with hearing impairment in the field of IT sector.

News from College Office • RCI Inspections for MASLP, BASLP and PGDAVT courses were conducted on 21st & 22nd October 2019. Updates from B. N. Gupta Research Centre During this quarter BNGRC was involved in a host of research and collaboration activities. An MoU was signed with Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology (RGIT) for facilitating collaboration for academic and research activities. Accordingly, meetings were arranged and 2 project proposals resulted from this collaboration. These 2 projects were uploaded to the DST (Department of Science and Technology) portal. As per the MoU with Siddhaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), meetings were arranged at Dr.SRCISH. The outcome of these meetings was 2 project proposals which were uploaded to the DST portal. A total of 5 projects were uploaded to the DST portal on 31st October, 2019 - 2 projects in collaboration with RGIT, 2 with SIT and 1 from Dr. SRCISH. Publication has become a part of BNGRC. The process of bringing out a Journal of Hearing Language and Speech is in place. The issue of 2019 is ready and in press. It will be published soon. There are many articles and some compendiums in the issue. It will be one of the few journals in India on the subject of speech and hearing.

Updates from Auditory Verbal Therapy Unit Diwali

Children who attend auditory verbal therapy celebrated Diwali on 24/10/2019. A brief description about Diwali was given to the children with the help of videos and they were encouraged to help with the related rituals. Sweets were distributed to all. The children also had a fun time bursting crackers in the playground.

Children’s Day

On 13th of November, Children’s Day was celebrated. Children’s and their parents participated in different activities like colouring, craft, musical chairs, and vegetable carving. Prizes for participation were distributed and a cake in was cut.

Updates from Sunaad School This has been an eventful quarter for Sunaad School. Functions of the school and students performance were regulated by parent-teacher meetings.

Competitions

An inter-house ‘Rangoli’ competition was organized on 23rd October 2019 for students from classes 1st to 10th. A ‘Collage’ competition was organized; all students from pre-school to Std10th participated and prizes were distributed to the students Department for Empowerment of Differently-abled and Senior Citizens organized sports, drawing, and dance competitions at Kanteerava stadium, Bangalore in the last week of Nov. 2019 to mark “World Disabled Day”. Differently abled children from all over Karnataka attended the event. Students of Sunaad School participated in the various events and won 25 medals in total.

Updates from Sunaad School Training

Life Skills for Adolescence (SFA): Sunaad School started a life skills training program for adolescents for classes from 5th to 10th students from 30th November onwards. This will help young learners to make informed decisions, solve problems, think creatively and critically, communicate effectively, build healthy relationship, empathize with others, cope with challenges, and manage their lives in a healthy and productive manner. On 19th Oct 2019, Sunaad school teachers completed a course on ‘Basics of Computers’ conducted by Cognizant and certificates for the same were issued to all teachers.

Celebrations

Children’s Day was celebrated on Nov 14th to celebrate the birthday of our first Prime Minister, Pandit Nehru. Teachers enacted some incidents of Nehru’s life and gave a short description of his life. It was an enjoyable as well as a learning experience for the children. Christmas was celebrated in Sunaad School before the holidays. A crib was made and ‘Santa Claus’ visited the centre much to the delight of all the children. A Greeting Card competition was organized on the 31st of December. On 11th December 2019, Yuva Bangalore Trust, Malleshram, Bangalore, organized a program called “Sky Park Planetarium”, a mobile planetarium, a dome theater to show a wonderful word of stars, planets and phases of moon, the solar system, the galaxies, Milky Way, constellations, their origin and much more. This was an educative program for children; children enjoyed it thoroughly and high school children got a chance to interact with the scientist. 18

Updates from Sign Language Unit In the final quarter of 2019, the sign language classes for the Diploma students of special education classes (HI) began. Students who were completing the course passed with flying colours. One student, a dentist by profession, joined the functional sign language course as she wanted to able to meet a wider range of people; she was very delighted to learn that she could sign well and could have a career in sign language interpretation. 2nd year B.Ed students of Sri Kongadiyappa College of Education (B.Ed) Doddaballapura, Bangalore Rural visited the unit as part of their curriculum (prescribed by Bangalore University). A deafness sensitization program was also held for them which helped clear many misconceptions about deafness, sign language, and hearing aids. They actively participated in the question time which was very interactive. The highlight of the quarter was the visit of film director, Mr. Rathan for the movie he is making on Deaf people not limited by their handicap. The lead actress of the film, Ms. Divya, felt greatly privileged to play this role. She enthusiastically practised the dialogues and recorded them.

Celebrations

Gandhi Jayanthi was celebrated on October 1st. Children, mothers, and staff offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and sang Meera Bhajan. Children were briefed about Gandhiji’s contribution during the freedom fight. On October 4th, dolls were arranged on account of Dussehra festival. Mothers performed aarti to all girl children and sweets and gifts were distributed to them.

On 24th October, children along with their mothers were taken to G.K.V.K. for a field trip (‘Krishimela’) Children were told about various crops, vegetables and tools used in agriculture, different types of manure, irrigation models, etc. Children were given information about farmers and farming activities.

On October 31st, Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s birthday was celebrated (National integration day). Dr. M.N. Nagaraja, CEO, was the chief guest. He offered a floral tribute to Sardar Vallabhai Patel and Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister. He addressed mothers and explained about a parent’s role in training children with hearing loss. On November 11th, sports were conducted for children on account of Children’s day. On November 14th Children’s Day was celebrated. Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat was the chief guest. She offered a floral tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru, Former Prime Minister and distributed prizes for the winners of sports. Prizes were sponsored by the staff of the centre.

On November 19th, the birthday of Smt. Indira Gandhi, Former Prime Minister of India, was celebrated at the centre. Staff, mothers, and children offered floral tributes to her. Mrs. Mamatha explained about Smt. Indira Gandhi’s contribution for the development of the country and the programmes she implemented for the upliftment of poor people.

On October 25th, Deepavali festival was celebrated at the centre. Lakshmi Pooja was performed and a special dish ‘kajjaya’ was prepared. Dr. Rashmi Bhat, Principal Dr.SRCISH attended the celebration, wished mothers, and children, and distributed sweets.

On December 1st, Mrs. Rathna B. Shetty and Mrs. Mamatha attended the programme organized by Udgam Trust at Kanika Parameshwari Temple, Rajajinagar. Both of them spoke about the use of hearing aids as well as basic training to be imparted to the children after fitting the hearing aids.

On December 24th Christmas was celebrated. A beautiful crib was made and was decorated with colorful balloons. Christmas cake was cut and carols were sung. Santa Claus visited the centre and distributed gifts and sweets to the children.

On December 6th, Dr. Ambedkar’s Parinirvana day was observed at MTC. Mothers and children offered floral tributes to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. On 19th and 20th of December, Mrs. Rathna B. Shetty attended the International Conference on Parenting Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children organized by Bala Vidyalaya, Chennai on account of their golden jubilee celebration. Mrs. Rathna Shetty presented a paper on her journey in the field of rehabilitation of children with hearing impairment. The book written by Mrs. Ratna B. Shetty (kivudu makkalige kalisuva vidhaana) has been notified by ICMR as a reference book in management of hearing impairment, in pediatric age group of 0 to 12 years.

Updates from Psychology Unit A Mental Health Program was organized on the 25th of October for the parents of the ASD school children. The program focused on mindfulness and positive affirmation. Parents were given a few activities during the program to boost their self-esteem and self-confidence. Guided meditation was also conducted which helped parents reduce their stress levels and relax their minds. Parents were given roses with a written positive thought attached.

Celebrations

Children’s Day was celebrated in the Psychology Unit on the 13th of November. Children dressed up and/or made charts related to the theme of Nature (Air, Water, Fire etc.) and presented information about it. They also showcased their talents of singing and playing the guitar after which the best performer was rewarded. Books and chocolates were distributed to all students by Mrs. Alphonsa Joseph, Head of Psychology Unit. Children’ Day was celebrated in the Comm DEALL Unit as well, on the 14th of November. Children wore colourful clothes and received gifts of handmade photo frames and chocolates.

Dasara celebrations were organized by parents of the children of Comm DEALL on 4th of October. Books and therapy materials were decorated with rangoli, banana shoots etc. Principal Dr. Rashmi Bhat distributed gifts to the children of Comm DEALL. Sweets were been distributed to staff of the Institute by the parents.

Diwali was celebrated on 25th of October in the Psychology Unit by ASD & NIOS School children. The Unit was decorated with rangoli and diyas. Diyas were lit by the staff and children with the help of their parents. Sweets and handmade greeting cards prepared by children of the ASD School were given to the children and roses were given to the parents.

Updates from Psychology Unit Christmas was celebrated on 19/12/19 with the NIOS and ASD school children. A small crib prepared by the NIOS school children was displayed. Children partipated in a small christmas play and carol singing. Cake was distributed to all after the celebration.

SASH Corner In the month of October-2019, indoor sports events were conducted at Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing by Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH). Students from the Bachelors and Masters programmes participated with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship in the events which included table tennis, badminton, carrom, chess, skipping, darts, and arm wrestling.

Ms. Helan Tomy (2nd BSLPA) bagged the 1st prize in the Long Jump event for Women and set the Bangalore North University record in the Bangalore North University Athletic Meet – (2019-2020), an Inter-college Athletic Championship Meet held at the Sports School, Vidyanagar Stadium in the 1st week of November. Students and staff of Dr. S.R.C.I.S.H. got together to put up a Christmas Play on 19.12.2019. The play titled “The reason for the season” included carol singing and was followed by games and distribution of Christmas cake.

On 20th and 21st of November, students of Dr.SRCISH participated in many events including a quiz, collage making, mehendi, rangoli, painting, debate, and photography in the cultural festival ‘Uttarothsava’ held at Kristhu Jayanthi College. They competed against 43 colleges and bagged the first runner-up trophy which they received from the Chancellor of Bangalore North University.
