Dear all, Happy New Year 2018!! We celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Institute and the Trust on 9th December 2017. Former Chief Justice of India, Padma Vibhushan M.N. Venkatachaliah graciously presided over the function and declared open the Speech and Hearing Research Center named after Shri. B.N. Gupta. Hon’ble Shri D.H. Shankaramurthy, Chairman of the Legislative Council of Karnataka, was conferred with the Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Memorial Award 2017 for his outstanding contribution in the upliftment of the neglected people. He was one of the key persons responsible for instituting child centric grant. Sri Sri Sri Jayendra Puri Mahaswamiji delivered Ashirvachana. We, the trustees and staff, take great pride in being involved with the institute at this juncture of Ruby Jubilee celebrations and strive to develop it so as to achieve greater heights in serving the needy. This issue is dedicated to highlighting the 40th Anniversary function, and the journey that led us to this milestone. I am pleased to share that the institute has received NAAC Accreditation. 40th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
On 9th December 2017, we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Institute. The program started with cultural events of children from Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired. In his welcome address, Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Hon. Chairman and Director of Dr. S R Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, said that the Founder, Dr. S R Chandrasekhar had injected quality and devotion to work as main values in the functioning of the Institute. He said that the Institute has grown to this level only because of the dedicated staff and the benevolent donors including Lions and Rotary Clubs and other philanthropists. While acknowledging the grant being received from the Govt. of Karnataka, he said that the Institute is planning to be a deemed to be University in the long run. Ln. V.S. Shanthavadhan, Hon. Treasurer gave a brief history on the progress made by the Institute over the past 40 years. He focused on the significant role played by Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar and fellow Members of Bangalore East Lions Club, and the contributions from Lions Club International Foundation. The Institute has received several awards including State Awards, he said. The former Chief Justice of India, Padma Vibhushan Justice Venkatachaliah inaugurated the B.N. Gupta Speech and Hearing Research Center of the Institute and said that research needs to get top priority in this sector as well. He recalled how persons with disabilities have accomplished wonderful things in the past, while praising the vision of the Founder Dr. S R Chandrasekhar.
Dr. S R C Memorial Award was conferred on Hon’ble Sri D.H. Shankaramurthy, Chairman of Legislative Council GoK, for his efforts in promoting the cause of the poorer sections of the society, particularly in ushering in few benefiting schemes to students with disabilities. While accepting the Award Shri Shankaramurthy lauded the initiatives of the Institute. His Holiness Sri Jayendra Puri Mahaswamiji in his Ashirvachana lauded the human quality of supporting the ‘have-nots’ and appealed for promoting the culture of supporting such causes. He also lauded the role of the Lions Clubs. We thank the following as we received a donation of rupees one lakh each from Lion V.V.K. Reddy, Mr. M.K. Dattaraj, and Lion D.K. Mohan, and rupees two lakhs from Mr. Pathi Sridhara towards the B.N. Gupta Research Center established with an initial donation of Rs.10 lakhs by Mr. B. Krishna. Lion Srinivas, Dist. Governor of our District came forward and donated five new computers to our institute. All donors, trustees, members of various committees, and staff were felicitated. The students of Dr. S R Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing college performed before CA DL Suresh Babu, Hon. Secretary of the Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust delivered the vote of thanks. The event ended with the National Anthem followed by lunch.

TORCH BEARERS Forty years ago, Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar, founder of this Institute, took the first step in realizing an ambitious dream that has hence blossomed beyond all expectations. The following is an excerpt from his book, rightly titled ‘Acorn to Oak’.
“What was planned as a rehabilitation centre for persons with speech and hearing problems has grown into a vast organization with various activities and has earned a reputation as a premier institution of its kind in the country today. The institute’s birth could almost be called accidental…it was just an idea conceived at a Speech and Hearing Camp held in Bangalore, which blossomed into a reality. It was indeed a dream come true……………… I have a great sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that I have done the job to my best. I feel there is meaning in life, and that it is worth living – not only for oneself but also for others. As I look back with nostalgia I also look to the future and ask God to bless this Institute that it may continue to serve with commitment in the generations to come.” Without commitment and dedication, none of this would be possible. With grateful thanks, we salute the committed and dedicated torch bearers of the Institute through these 40 years.

memoirs I must confess that at the outset I was not interested in involving myself with the Institute, since I was busy with my business. Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar convinced me to at least go to the Institute for 15 days and then take a decision to continue or not. I overwhelmingly liked the purpose and activities of the Institute. My life’s perspectives changed after I started associating with the activities of the Institute, thanks to Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar. The challenges of the Specially Abled Persons with Hearing and Speech Impairment helped me to deal with the non disabled people as well. It made me a human being and hastened me to work towards creating an inclusive world. I found the Trustees, Donors, Staff and students, as well as the Chairpersons and members of the various committees of the Institute very supportive and helpful, which continues to encourage me in discharging my responsibilities. The task of balancing the wants and needs of persons with hearing and speech impairments and the development of the Institute as proposed and envisaged by the late founder Dr. S.R. memoirs Five Decade of Bonding with a Legend and Four Decade of Bonding with Legacy Institution. I came into contact with Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar, When I started my profession fourtynine years back. I was very much impressed by the discipline and professionalism that, the doctor had and he became my mentor and guide. Who was true legend. Fourty years back when Dr. SRC wanted to start “Lion’s Club of Bangalore East Speech and Hearing Trust” alone with other legends in Lionsim, Lion T. Rameshan, Lion M.P. Taniwala, Lion A.P. Naidu, Lion A.P. Chacko, Lion Sriram, Lion N.K. Vishwanathan and Lion S.N. Ramachandra. I had the unique privilege of drafting the trust deed and registering the same with sub-registrar and Income Tax act authorities. As on today, all the founder trustees except Lion S.R. Ramachandra have left to heavenly abode after creating history for themselves. It is also history that one year after “Lion’s Club of Bangalore East Speech and Hearing Trust” the trust became “Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust”. When Dr. SRC approached me for the formation of the Trust, he had undetermined passion and extraordinary sankalp to start an institution of excellence in Speech and Hearing. I was very happy, to be associated with the Trust forty years back. Dr. SRC not only made me the Honorary Auditor of the Trust, he also insisted that, I should attend all the Trust meetings as special invitee without fail, which I gladly accepted and followed. A great institution was born fourty years back which has now crossed fourty years of existence and it has done Yeomen services in the field of Speech and Hearing. We have reached a stage with the present dynamic trustees, we will create institute of national eminence for speech and hearing of International Standards. Ten years back Dr. SRC told me to stop the audit and be a Trustee in the year 2007, which I gladly accepted as there was abundant opportunity to serve the disabled in this institution. A year later when out illustrative Hon. Secretary K.R. Ramachandra died, Dr. SRC requested me to be Hon. Secretary of the trust and from 2008 I am serving as Hon. Secretary. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the present Chairman Dr. M.S. Venkatesh and Treasurer Shanthavadhan and other trustees, Who have given unstinted support for my work. It has been nostalgic experience for the last 3 decades since I began my interactions with Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar, Lion A.P. Naidu and Lion A.P. Chacko. As Honorary Treasurer, I gained the full trust of Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar and learnt frugal ways to manage public money from Lion A.P. Naidu. Both had taught me that the resources of the Institute should be most optimally used to return maximum benefits to the speech and hearing impaired people. We both, Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar and I, belong to the same club, Lions Club of Bangalore East. I always involve our Lions Club of Bangalore East in the growth and development of Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute. I have had the pleasure of knowing the founder and the early beginnings of this Institute in the 70’s; I have had the pleasure of meeting Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar on a couple of occasions in the past, while working with Prof. Dr. S. Kameswaran of Chennai. The Institute has been my temple since Feb. 2014. Having worked in Government Institutions, I could sense the priorities at work in a charitable trust. While one had to generate 10% more every year to level deficit due to cut in non-plan non-pay grant, in this Institute, one has to have financial risk management capabilities to generate larger revenue. Though it is true that the staff get relatively less than the stipulated gross salary paid to peers in Government sector, the work turned out here by all colleagues with dedication, is phenomenal.
The management committee, consisting of Trustees, meets twice a week at the Institute. Needless to say, all the Trustees render services without any benefit from the Institute in any form. What I admire the most in this Institute is that it has witnessed 3 power transitions in the last 40 years after the founder and has proven to with stand the transitions. Now that the Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust has evolved policies to ensure growth, development and sustainability, the sky is the limit to achieve its set goals. I am grateful to its Founder Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar, the Trustees, management committee, all the present and past staff of the Institute, donors, well-wishers, and critics who have contributed to the growth of the Institute.

The Cambridge English dictionary defines synergy as “the combined power of a group of things when they are working together that is greater than the total power achieved by each working separately; the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects”. How is synergy related to Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing is what I would like to share on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing. At the time when I joined, Dr. SRC had the reputation of being a hard taskmaster. When he was awarded the Karnataka Rajyotsava award in 1981, my classmate, Kushal Raj, who had joined work here, said he deserved it and I was surprised. I had heard two conflicting statements when I had applied for a job here, so when I did get the job (because 4 staff left) I did not plan to continue for more than a couple of years. The institute was different yet similar to the system in AIISH. The best difference to us was the intercom to communicate (a rarity in those days).

Work was mainly clinical, but we had a good library with 5 journals. At that time it was recognized as a research institute, but we subsequently lost the 35c due to change in circumstances. Work was well organized-we had diagnostic and therapeutic postings. Staff were posted two days in a week in diagnostics and the rest in therapy. We had 3 audiometric suites, good equipment, including calibration equipment, instruments such as vocal II and artificial larynx, and hearing aids for trial. Staff had duties such as calibration and maintenance, purchase, camp, and school screening organization. ENT consultation was provided free on 4 days of the week by Dr. Chandrasekhar himself and Dr. P.S. Maiya. Pediatric and neurological consultation was available once a week. In addition, there was a full-fledged ear mould lab with Mr. Rangaswamy as technician. Quality control in clinics was maintained by weekly scrutiny of files. A report was typed by Mr. Prasad after a file was completed and so a ready reference was available when the file was taken up. Patients requiring further testing were sent letters with appointment details. Similarly, therapy appointments were given by post. Ms.

memoirs Cynthia Hoskins, the receptionist, kept the files ready. Appointments were strictly followed. This was appreciated by many of our high profile patients. Calibration was carried out every month with support from AIISH in the beginning. Along with a clinician and the engineer, Mr. Devaraj came on Sundays to calibrate. The institute was run like an institution in an advanced country. Cleanliness was monitored, many times by Dr. SRC himself. There was transparency in work. Ideas were taken to the director and explained. Those he judged useful were supported. All were involved in the processSenior staff and the administrator attended trust meetings when these new ideas were discussed. Public education was the first priority. Staff made presentations in Indian Medical Association meetings, ENT meetings, and in Primary Health Centres. Later when school screening began, staff would orient the teachers. Each staff had a portfolio assigned- calibration, camps, school screening, purchase, grants, and statistics which were taken up in turns. At no point in time were our requirements turned down and access was always present. Lingarajapuram in those days was outside city limits, so efforts were made to facilitate transport of patients. We had a matador van that picked up patients from Venkateshwara ENT centre (near City market) at 9.30 a.m. and brought them to the institute by 10 a.m. picking up more patients from Shivajinagar. The return trip was at 11 a.m. and we tried hard to get the testing done so that patients could go back by the 11 am trip otherwise they had to wait till 1.00 pm. There were two trips in the afternoon; one at 3.00 pm and the last at 5.00 pm. Staff were permitted to use the van to come and leave the institute which was convenient since there was poor connectivity by bus. Dr. Vijayalakshmi Basavaraj joined in 1983 and Dr. SRC told her to make the staff oriented to research. She initiated research on ABR and a project on “Correspondence therapy for Children” along with Mrs. Kumudavalli. The staff prepared lessons and evaluation sheets and conducted contact programs for parents. Toys were made especially for children by Mysore Toys and books were obtained. The programme was a success; two children who registered now hold degrees and a gas agency. Dr. Vijayalakshmi and Mrs. Kumudavalli had also conceived of the pre-school for children with hearing impairment and the school for children with hearing impairment which began in a rented house. The preschool began in the auditorium with Mrs. Sonamma as the teacher and 10 children in 1987. The preschool program was run to educate parents on use of language in day to day activities, lesson plans similar to those for correspondence therapy were made and children began to progress. We were in no way experts in the area, but had a lot of passion and I think learned a lot putting in inputs from Balavidyalaya, and getting successful parents to motivate others. One of
the positive outcomes was that parents became literate. The need for teachers was felt more when we started the school for the deaf children in a rented house near the institute, with two teachers, and Mrs. Kumudavalli proposed a one-year teacher training program. The government of Karnataka gave us permission to give a diploma for teachers of hearing impaired children, and our first batch completed the course in 1988; from that batch, Mrs. Padmaprabha was employed for the preschool and Mrs. Geeta Prasanna as headmistress of the deaf school. Support for the school was obtained from Action Aid India for 10 years through the good offices of Dr. Sudha Nair and the school was shifted to its own building in 1991. In the days when distance communication was only by letters and sometimes by telephone, the institute was isolated from other institutes and took a path all its own, based on the needs felt at that time. Staff were open to work and wanted to learn. Many seminars were arranged by staff with food being brought from home. Lunch times were fun times with sharing of food, recipe exchange, and case discussion. The institute took up several initiatives in Hearing Conservation: The institute conducted noise measurement and hearing conservation programs for several industries, the largest being Titan watch factory. Public awareness of noise as a pollutant, noise measurement in Bangalore, and hearing testing was started through funding from Sri Dorabjee Tata Trust. Funds and publicity have been the bugbear of the institute for a long time. Fund raising has been one of the biggest activities since government grants gradually reduced to minimal amounts. The institute has sold donation tickets and greeting cards, conducted exhibitions such as “Mayfair”, conducted fashion shows (when Mrs. Radhika Poovaiah was the PR). On the suggestion of the then administrator Mr. Somashekhar, efforts were made to create a corpus fund of 10 lakhs. After the D.Ed program was run successfully for about 5 years, Dr. Uma conceived the idea of a college and running the BSc (Speech and Hearing) program. Permission was obtained in 1993. The college started with 4 students. Teaching staff were promoted to lecturer and reader as per qualification. Although Dr.SRC was the first principal for a short duration, Dr. Uma was appointed as principal and a little later, Mrs. Kumudavalli, as the Joint Director of ISH. Development of the college and institute continued in parallel. In the early days, there was a lot of excitement. In 1992, Mrs. S. Kumudavalli suggested that we have a sign language unit which was supported by the management. Under Dr. Uma’s direction, along with teaching schedule, new measures such as student visits to Montessori schools to observe normal children and case discussions were taken up. Dr. Thomas Chacko, a senior linguist, made students transcribe and analyse speech to find out

memoirs meanings as done by linguists. From Dr. Uma’s visits abroad, the ideas of therapy rooms with one-way glass, video and audio recording were brought into the institute. We were the first to have these rooms. The academic block was inaugurated by Mr. Deve Gowda, the then CM of Karnataka in 1995. We now had a library that was bigger, three class rooms, and two labs. Strict monitoring of students was done. Staff literally stood next to the students in diagnostics. In general, students were enthusiastic and benefited from the close attention. Life changed after the introduction of the B.Sc. program. First of all, to meet the standards of number of hours, we had to shift to a 5-day week. Teaching staff were in the 5-day program and clinical staff in a 6-day program from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. We were able to attract senior faculty to give inputs to our students. Students now had the privilege of learning from distinguished faculty. Dr. Ratna, Dr. Pratibha Karanth, and Dr. Shailaja Nikam gave guest lectures and taught young students. In a few years, the masters program in Speech and Hearing was started. Now we suddenly had senior students who could take up alternate responsibilities. Research proposals were presented and discussed. We had a special room for CI mapping on the 2nd floor and a speech lab with Dr. Speech. The DEALL program, initiated by Dr. Karanth, was started in the Institute. The Institute also started the Neonatal hearing screening in the NICU in Manipal and St. John’s Medical College hospitals. A proposal was submitted to Christopher Blinden Mission to identify persons with hearing impairment. After it came through, Dr. Rashmi Bhat was appointed director of the project and she continued in this post until 2007 when the project was closed. The project led to street plays, and making videos for parents for early identification with help from Dr. Ratna. The institute was a very exciting place with everyone feeling they were doing something worthwhile, and there was very good bonding among the staff. Ideas could be presented informally and taken forward. The psychology unit, which is now headed by Ms. Alphonsa, began reading remediation classes and therapy for auditory processing disorders under Dr. Rashmi Bhat. Dr. Anitha Reddy developed students’ skills in voice analysis. There was a lot of freedom to work, which I think we all cherished. For a few years after that, about 6 senior staff stayed on and juniors left.
Nagaraja, the 2nd floor was remodeled and labs built on the first floor; and since the academic block was no longer sufficient, a few more class rooms were added. By now the RCI approval for courses was required and syllabi had to be remodeled to meet RCI and University standards. Hence all buildings and rooms had to be made according to these needs. Changes came in more ways than one. Dr. SRC remained as the patron- in-chief and Ln. Muthu Kumar took over as Director. Functioning and documentation needs increased with the growth and resultant formalities increased. Growth occurred in the number of conferences conducted annually and the number of students being admitted which was largely due to the hostel facilities and courses offered. Dr. M.N. Nagaraja felt we were doing good work, but that it was not projected and he made all efforts to make the presence of the institute felt. Spastic Society of Karnataka was approached for greater interaction, so that Mrs. Maithra Mahesh would take care of teaching here and we would take care of their therapy. Students were now directly exposed to a different team approach, including the occupational and physiotherapist. Academically, the doctoral program took off in 2004. The cochlear implant program initiated in 1997 was catching up, so a special unit was made for therapy for CI. RCI inputs were sought for conferences and all efforts were made to woo students to our institute. More courses were initiated. We were now the only institute to have three masters’ programs- M.ASLP, M.Sc. Audiology and M.Sc. Speech Language Pathology. More senior staff joined- Dr. B.S. Premalatha, an expert in laryngectomy and Dr. Lakshmi Venkatesh joined and more programs got added. The institute had an MoU with Jain Hospital and SMILE train. This added a boost to our clinical repertoire. The mothers training centre was also started with Dr. SRC’s backing to empower mothers to facilitate language learning. Mrs. Ratna Shetty was appointed as the coordinator. As the capability of the institute was recognized, the NPPCD project was given to the institute; this brought us into government work for the first time. A unit of CI therapy was begun with Ms. Kalpana Hegde, Ms. Akshaya Pruthvi, and Ms. Uma Mageshwari.
Growth of the institute depended on growth of staff. Now it had become a need. Earlier efforts to register for Ph.D. as external candidates in Mysore had failed, and it was imperative that the institute be recognized as a centre for Ph.D. This was initiated by Dr. Uma, but the final registration of candidates could be done only in 2004 under Dr. M.N. Nagaraja who joined as Principal and Director.
The old order had to change and the new order began. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh took over as Director of the institute and Chairman of the Trust. He proceeded to streamline work as well as accounts. He realized the need for an in-house magazine and the Sphear which was sporadically printed was now in a new avatar-ISHLink that was professional and regular. The institute was awarded the ISO certification, the first in speech and hearing in India. Applying for NAAC seemed to be the next step. Dr. Venkatesh took to beautify the institute and use best-practices that he came to know.

memoirs exposure worldwide, he recommended the establishment of Dr.SRC travel fellow to the Trust. This was accepted and instituted in ISHA. He added new services such as “Skype-based sign language interpretation for legal purposes” and medical consultation with sign language. The mobile bus project initiated earlier was completed, and camps were increased to at least 2/week with Ms. Premakumari as coordinator. He gave a greater focus to research and awareness on impact factor of journals, and exposure to wider professional bodies. Thanks to the efforts of Prof. R. Rangasayee, this Institute is affiliated to IALP (International Association of Logopaedics and Phoniatrics), the first affiliate society in the country. He opened our minds to newer possibilities and international trends. Growth has been possible due to the “ownership” taken up of responsibilities assigned. Staff took up the work and raised it to greater heights than envisaged. This had been true of all staff at all levels; our administrative staff including Ms. Lovely, Mr. Jayaram, Mr. Ramamurthy, Mr. Shanmugam, Ms. Usha, Mr. Prasad, Ms. Jalajakshi, Ms. Sybil, Ms. Roopa, Mr. Muniraju, Ms. Sumithra, and

Mr. Mohan along with our technical staff have all played a part. Without the support of our behind-the- scenes staff Mr. Ananth, Mr. Kupparaju, Ms. Mary and her team of housekeeping staff, Mr. Prakash, Mr. Vasu, Mr. Robert, Mr. Bahadur, Mr. Yesu, Mr. Loknath, Mr. Kumar and Ms. Akter work would not have progressed. The support of students cannot be undermined. In every activity after 1993, students have contributed their enthusiasm and fresh thought. Growth in activities has been fostered by their presence. It may also be said that staff continued to work because it became more interesting. Presently the institute has clinical standing. There is a greater focus on research, but we lag behind and need to catch up. All development has been possible due to the synergy between technical and administrative staff, and between all staff and management. Growth of Institute is linked to growth of staff and freedom to grow ideas is essential. We now move forward in to the future. The goals have to be decided. The vision is strong, the mission needs modification.

“40” years, the Ruby Anniversary is a major milestone for an institution as it is for an individual. A celebration for completing four decades of existence in the field of Speech and Hearing, which was not a well known one, is not only an occasion of festivity but also a solemn one to pause and look back at its 40 years of journey and to thank all the people who made it possible and a moment to look ahead at the mountains we must still climb. Having been a part of the journey for the past 15 years, I fondly recall that Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar had a parental approach in involving the staff in the activities of the Institute. As we pay homage to the founding father, Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar, those who have met him will appreciate that the beginnings of the institute were not easy. It was an extreme struggle. There was no land, building, transportation facility, or a working capital. Lingarajapuram wasn’t a developed area back then. It was a modest beginning with only limited staff. We owe it all to the hard work, optimism, motivation, and vision of Dr. Chandrasekhar to serve the society. Over the years, as the needs of the society increased the institution strived to respond with better infrastructure and other facilities.
With the strong foundation by the founding father, we have progressed and developed in all aspects of the institute. Nothing would have been possible without the staff members who have worked loyally, with a devotion to work and commitment to the society over the years. Heartfelt thanks to the beneficiaries, who have given a lot of publicity by word of mouth, and hundreds of students who have contributed to the honor and recognition of the institution globally. With pride, we salute the founders, the Trustees, the donors, Lions Club of Bangalore East, Lions Club International Foundation, Rotary International, and all others who have contributed in their own way to the growth of our Institute. With heartfelt gratitude, we appreciate and record the hard work and effort by our Management Committee Members (MCM), Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, our Hon. Chairman, CA DL Suresh Babu, Hon. A team from Finland led by Mr. Marko VuDriheimo visited the Institute on 19.12.2017 and tested a mobile app called CHABLA that enables the Deaf to connect with interpreters and hearing persons online simultaneously to get interpreter services on the spot anywhere in the world. Makkala Habba, 2017 was organized at Cubbon Park by the Department of Women and Child Development, Govt. of Karnataka, Bangalore from 11.11.17 to 14.11.17 to mark Children’s Day. As part of the cultural programme, students of Sunaad School enthralled the audience with their colourful dance performance.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 2017
On 22.11.17, an inter-school drawing competition was organized by Directorate for Empowerment of DifferentlyAbled and Senior Citizens under the Department of Women and Child Development, Govt. of Karnataka, held at Jawaharlal Bal Bhavan, Cubbon Park, Bangalore. A few children of Sunaad School participated in the competition and received prizes and certificates. Students of Sunaad School gave a dance performance.
Students from the ASD School participated in the sports event organized at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium and bagged the first prize in throw ball and second prize in the ‘ball-in-the-bucket’ event.

Lion A.R. Muthu Kumar was the Director of the Institute from 1 September 1999 to 11th March 2004 and he passed away on November 14th, 2017. Just a few months ago, he paid a visit to the Institute and affectionately interacted with the staff. st
Renowned ecologist, Mr. Harish Bhat (IISc), our guest faculty expired on 3rd November, 2017. He was a guest lecturer of Environmental Studies at the Institute. MOTHERS’ TRAINING PROGRAM
Dr.S.R.Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing (Dr.SRCISH), Bangalore, is one of the leading clinical and academic Institutes in India. Dr.SRCISH was established in 1977, and since then has been dedicated to providing services to persons with communication disabilities, such as hearing impairment, voice disorders, stuttering, cleft lip, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, learning disability, autism spectrum disorders, and post-stroke communication disorders. It also provides clinical services such as hearing assessment, hearing aid fitting, auditory verbal therapy, new born hearing screening, pre cochlear implant audiological evaluation and post surgical intervention. The institute has also been recognized as center for RBSK scheme by Govt. of Karnataka. Dr.SRCISH, in addition to providing clinical services, has also undertaken the responsibility of manpower development, by training professionals in the area of speech, language, hearing sciences and special education. The areas of Speech Language Pathology (SLP), Audiology (Aud), and Special Education are fast emerging as careers of choice for students looking for challenging and rewarding careers as Speech and Language Pathologist, Audiologist or Special Educator.
SUPPORT GROUP SERVICES are main focus of our clinical services. Stuttering Club: Meets once a fortnight with the objective of providing a support, mediated by SLP. Laryngectomy Club: Provides a platform for laryngectomees (patients whose voice-boxes have been surgically removed due to cancer), to meet and interact with each other. Post-Stroke/Aphasia Club: Provides patients with aphasia and their families with coping skills. Cleft Lip & Palate Clinic: Assessment and management of clients with cleft lip and palate. Dysphagia Clinic: Assessment and management of various types of swallowing disoders either due to mechanical / neurogenic / pyschogenic causes.
