Dear All, I am pleased to present the April 2018 issue of ISHLINK to update you on all that has been happening. This quarter, we have had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Kenneth Pugh, President and Director of Research, Haskins Laboratory, a Cognitive Neuroscientist who is a Professor at University of Connecticut and Associate Professor at Yale University. He discussed the possibility of joint research collaborations. The Department of Speech Language Studies, under the leadership of Dr. B.S. Premalatha, conducted a 3-day National Seminar on “Dysphagia: Theory to Practice” which brought to the forefront the role of Speech Language Pathologist in Management of Dysphagia. We are also proud to have inaugurated the Dysphagia Clinic, a specialized unit for management of individuals with difficulty in swallowing. A press meet to spread awareness was also organised on this occasion. The Local Inquiry Committee of Bangalore North University under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.L. Muralidhar visited and inspected the Institute. International Women’s Day was celebrated in honour of all women of our Institute. We are also happy to have received the support and having collaborated with Indian Oil Corporation as part of their CSR initiative to conduct a programme on Awareness and Prevention of Music Deafness by use of mobile phones at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore. This is in line with WHO’s recommendations. Bangalore is the first city to have conducted this programme. While taking pride in our work, we wish to thank all our donors and well-wishers for their continued support without which none of this would have been possible.

Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Travel Fellow Dr. Kenneth Pugh, President and Director of Research, Haskins Laboratory and Dr.SR Chandrasekhar Travel Fellow visited the institute on 8th Jan, 2018. Dr. Kenneth Pugh is a cognitive neuro scientist, Professor at the University of Connecticut and Associate Professor at Yale University. He is the Fourth recipient of this Honor through the Indian Speech and Hearing Association, as instituted by our Trust in the memory of the founder Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar, an eminent ENT Surgeon and a visionary. Dr. Kenneth Pugh Dr. Pugh delivered a talk on “The literate brain: Insights from Neuroimaging”. Staff and students of the institute along with students from other institutes attended the talk which proved profitable and insightful. Later in the day, Dr. Pugh met with the faculty of the institute to discuss possible research collaborations

Awards and Accolades • On Feb. 11th Mrs. Rathna B. Shetty was conferred with Rani Abbakka Award by Rani Abbakka Uthsava Samithi in Mysore for her contribution in the field of Deaf Education. • On Feb. 11th Mrs. Rathna B. Shetty was felicitated by G.S.B Samaja and was awarded Best Teacher Award.

Dysphagia Unit Inauguration The Department of Speech Language Studies is proud to have opened the Dysphagia Unit. This specialized unit will deal exclusively with individuals with feeding and swallowing problems. This unit has taken off to a good start and will definitely go a long way in realizing the vision of Dr. SRC ISH.

Professional Development ‘Dyphagia: Theory to Practice’
A 3 day – RCI – CRE recognized national seminar on ‘ Dysphagia: Theory to Practice’ was conducted by the Department of Speech and Language Studies on the 15th, 16th and 17th March 2018.
The programme began with Invocation by students (Ms. Impana and Ms. Sushma). The welcome address was given by Dr. Madhuri Gore, Professor and Principal, Dr. SRC ISH followed by lighting of lamp by the dignitaries. Dr. B.S. Premalatha, Professor & HOD. Speech Language Studies, Dr. SRC ISH briefed the audience about the seminar. Dr. Rashmi Bhat (Professor & HOD, Department of Hearing Studies), introduced the Chief Guest, Dr. Prathibha Karanth (Founder Director and Managing Trustee, The Com DEALL Trust, Bangalore). She shared her views on dysphagia and the importance of its practice in our field. Following this, honoring of the Chief Guest was done by Management Committee members. Our beloved Guest of Honor, Prof. R. Rangasayee (Chair, Audiology Committee) was introduced by Dr. Anita Reddy, Associate Professor, Department of Speech Language Studies, Dr. SRC ISH. He addressed the gathering on the incidence and prevalence of dysphagia, following which he was honoured by Management Committee members. The presidential address was given by Dr. Rtn M.S. Venkatesh (Chairman, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, Dr. SRC ISH). The vote of thanks was given by Ms. Sneha Mareen Varghese (Associate Professor, Department of Speech Language Studies, Dr. SRC ISH). The Inaugural function ended with National Anthem. Subsequently, the Chief Guest, Guest of Honor and Management Committee Members inaugurated the Dysphagia Clinic. The conference included the participation of several young resource speakers who are completely into the field of dysphagia at institutional as well as hospital set ups. The first scientific session was begun with Dr. R.P. Deo, Head
& Neck Surgeon, who delivered a talk on Anatomy & Physiology of swallowing which enlightened the crowd on the basics of swallowing structures. This was followed by a clear explanation on Causes, Types, Signs & Symptoms of Dysphagia, by Dr. Swapna N., Reader in Speech Pathology, AIISH, Mysore. These causes, broadly classified into mechanical and neurological, were explained in detail by Ms. Mereen Rose Babu, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Speech Language Studies, Dr. SRC ISH and Ms. Rohini Chand, Asst. Professor, Bharateeya Vidyapeet Deemed University, Pune, respectively. The second day scientific session was focused on Assessment of Swallowing . This began with information gained by Dr. B.S. Premalatha during her 2 decades of work at Kidwai Cancer Hospital regarding the medical terminologies that a speech and swallowing therapist should know while working in a hospital set up. Mr. Phaneedhar Reddy, Speech & Swallowing Therapist, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad gave a clear view of bedside evaluation of swallowing. The video case presentation of assessment done at bedside added to the richness of the presentation. A detailed presentation on non instrumental evaluation of swallowing was carried out by Dr. Radish Kumar, Professor and Head, KMC, Mangalore. The afternoon session was made interesting by Ms. Mansi Jagtap, Asst Professor, Bharateeya Vidyapeet Deemed University, Pune through videos of her cases that she used to explain various instruments involved in assessment of swallowing. Another highlight of the day was live demonstration of FEES on a normal individual and an individual with lateral medullary syndrome by Dr. Pradeep, ENT Surgeon, Meenakshi ENT Centre, Bangalore. The last 2 scientific sessions of the day were dedicated to viewing different case presentations of

Professional Development neurogenic dysphagia and mechanical dysphagia by Ms. Rohini Chand and Mr. Arun Balaji who is working as a swallowing therapist at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. The final day of the seminar focused on various aspects of management in the field of swallowing disorders. Mr. Prasanna Hegde, Speech & Swallowing Therapist, HCG, Bangalore started the scientific session of the day by explaining the need for strengthening of swallowing muscles as a dysphagia intervention. After this, Mr. Arun Balaji, explained how to identify aspiration in individuals with swallowing disorders and how to manage the same. This was enriched with clear videos of videofluroscopy in different disorders and sharing about the ways in which he has treated the individuals. This was followed by talk by Ms. Smita Caren Mathias, Speech & Swallowing Specialist, Majumdar Shaw Cancer Research Hospital, Bangalore, on demonstration and explanation of various swallowing maneuvers along with video-supplemented case presentations. The afternoon session was focused mainly on the instrumental modes of treatment available to individuals with swallowing disorders by Mr. Vijay Kumar, Senior Lecturer, SRM University, Chennai, who explained the usefulness of Vital Stim and Mr. Phaneedhar Reddy on thermal stimulation & electrical stimulation for treatment of dysphagia. The main attraction of the last scientific session of the seminar was the Panel Discussion on setting up a dysphagia unit. The panel included a group of energetic swallowing therapists, (Mr. Vijay Kumar, Mr. Phaneedhar, Ms. Mansi, Ms. Rohini, Mr. Arun Balaji, Mr. Prasanna, Dr. Sapna, Ms. Mereen) and Dr.
Janet Parameswaran, social worker at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore. The six scientific sessions held during the conference were chaired by Dr. B.S. Premalatha, Dr. Anita Reddy, and Dr. Swapna. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. B.S. Premalatha. Among the delegates, there were 61 working professionals, 17 external student delegates from Naseema Institute of Speech and Hearing, Bangalore, MERF, Kolkata AYJNIHH, Bharatiya Vidyapeeth, NISH Trivandrum, Manipal SOAHS, who attended the conference. 142 inhouse students were present A comic booklet for creating public awareness on swallowing disorders was distributed to the interested delegates; it was well appreciated by the delegates. The scientific sessions were sponsored by Indian Speech and Hearing association, Rehabilitation Council of India, Sravana Speech and Hearing Centre, Vaibhav Speech and Hearing Centre, and MENTS (Meenakshi ENT Clinic). Refreshments and lunch were sponsored by Indian Speech and Hearing association, Rehabilitation Council of India, and Sravana Speech and Hearing Centre. Feedback was collected from all the delegates on all the three days. Organizing Secretary Dr. B.S. Premalatha, Professor & H.O.D. Speech Language Studies, Dr. SRC ISH congratulated and appreciated the team for conducting the programme successfully. All the delegates were satisfied with the conference and also gave suggestions of more topics for upcoming conferences.

Events & Celebrations International Women’s Day
Over 100 women at the Dr. SRC ISH stepped away from their work desks and class rooms on the 8th of March 2018 to commemorate and celebrate International Women’s Day, a worldwide event that celebrates the spirit of womanhood. This day brought many things for women – a cause for celebration, a reason to pause and re-evaluate, a remembrance, an inspiration and a time to honour, loved and admired.
On this occasion, the Women Empowerment Committee took charge of the event to kick start the day with a video that brought in a different perspective and questioned the audience whether to celebrate or “uncelebrate” the event. In the light of this new found perspective, a survey was
conducted around the Institute where majority agreed that the need for a celebration was unarguable! Fun games such as ‘Tie those scarves right’, ‘what’s in that bag’ and a scavenger hunt that included the men as well were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience which included staff and students. Prizes were distributed for the same. A “musically” challenge was thrown in for each class to express their way of celebrating girl power which was judged by the staff. The event ended with the audience spreading smiles and laughter and the hour-long event inspired each to beat the pulp out of the preconceived notions and dogmas prevalent in a male-dominated society.
ISH Serves the Community Programme on Awareness and Prevention of Music Deafness by use of Mobile phones held at Mount Carmel College, Autonomous Personal Music Systems are widely being used globally today. While it is a convenient means of entertainment, it subtly drives the user to make use of higher volumes during listening and poses a high risk of Noise and Music Induced Hearing loss. In India, according to a report on the effect of usage of personal music systems on hearing, it was found that about 30% of individuals in a group of 70 young adults listened to music above the safety limits. There are over 980 million (2015) mobile phone users with 6.71 % annual growth rate in India, of whom a minimum of 25% listen to music from their mobile phones. On 8th March 2018, a programme on Awareness and Prevention of Music Deafness, Recreational Deafness through use of Mobile phones was organized as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by Indian Oil, at Mount Carmel College, Autonomous (MCCA) in association with Dr. SRC ISH. The aim of the programme was to spread awareness about Music Induced Hearing Loss and to educate the
public to use their music systems at safe levels. A model of a plastic mannequin named as Karna, was used as a simulation of the human head and a demonstration ear made of silicone was used as a simulation for the human ear to reproduce the acoustic properties of the human ear canal. A microphone fitted in the silicone ear at the level of the tympanic membrane (ear drum) and connected to the Sound Level Meter (SLM) measured the loudness of sound in decibels (dB). When the earphone of a personal music system is plugged into the demonstration ear, the intensity level of the sound is displayed on the SLM. The instruction to use the unit, effect of loud music on hearing, safe levels and dangerous levels were displayed next to the unit in both Kannada and English for public to read. Inaugurating the programme, Executive Director, (I/C) Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Indian Oil) Karnataka State Office, Mr. S. Varadachari called upon the youth to take maximum benefit of the facility to safeguard their hearing. He added that in a phased manner, this facility will be extended to other colleges of Bangalore by providing similar system models of mannequins so that a larger number of students will be reached.

ISH Serves the Community This event is a response to the call given by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to make listening safe initiatives which will draw attention towards anticipated rise in the number of people with hearing loss across the world. WHO declared 3 March, 2018 as World Hearing Day, with theme ‘Hear The Future’ Speaking on the occasion, Principal MCCA Dr. S.R. Arpana said that such systems were not available earlier and she thanked the Indian talent for making such equipment which will go a long way in creating awareness of harmful effects of mobile phones and their preventive methods not only in the youth but also in the community at large.

Pulse Polio Camp
Students of BASLP participated in a Pulse Polio Camp from 28th to 31st January and 11th to 14th March 2018. Students vaccinated children at the centres and in their homes. Despite being tiring, it was a fulfilling experience for the students. 12

Updates from Outreach Unit Camps Conducted using the Mobile Speech & Hearing Clinic
With the aim of reaching out to the underprivileged and those who are unaware/unable to reach the facilities of the Institute, the Mobile Speech and Hearing Bus was launched with the support of Lions Club of Bangalore East. The mobile outreach bus offers comprehensive audiological evaluation, treatment and consultation services for people with speech and hearing impairments. The project has been launched with the objective of providing preventive healthcare through hearing screening and early intervention services for rural and urban children. The services of the mobile speech and hearing clinic can be availed by elders as well. During the first quarter of 2018, 1,715 clients have been screened at the screening camp and 465 clients have been referred to institute for detailed evaluation and management.

Updates From Sunaad School Events and Celebrations Makara Sankranthi
Makara Sankranthi, the harvest festival is celebrated as token of gratitude to nature, especially for the Sun God and cattle. Children of Sunaad School celebrated the festival on January 12, 2018. The school was decorated with rangoli, sugarcane stalks, and Pongal pots. The children made ‘Ellu-Bella’ and distributed it to all their teachers and friends. The teachers of Sunaad School explained the significance of the festival and how it is celebrated in various parts of India.
Saraswathi Pooja
Saraswathi Pooja was observed on 16th March 2016. The children learnt about the significance of the Saraswathi Pooja and sweets were distributed as prasadam.
Graduation Day
On 28th March, 2018, Graduation Ceremony for the students of the class 10 was celebrated. Dr. Siddaraju, Director, Dept. for the Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, GoK kindly consented to be the Chief Guest of the ceremony. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman of the institute, Dr. Madhuri Gore, Deputy Director (Tech) and Principal of the College and Mrs. Padmaprabha, Head Mistress of Sunaad School were also present. Dr. Siddaraju addressed the gathering and gave a motivational speech The parents and relatives of the students were invited and they were proud to see their children completing their schooling despite the challenges they face due to their hearing impairment. The children were honored with certificate, scrolls and mementos. 15 students completed 10th grade successfully and graduated this year.

Updates From Sign Language Unit • In the month of January B.Ed students from various colleges visited as part of their study of inclusiveness. Visiting students were from Vijaya College, Sanjay Gandhi College of Education and Vivekananda college of Education. • Total of 29 students had visited us. A two-hour sensitization program for the students was done. Many of them were happy to learn about deafness, and admitted that they were not aware of many of the myths about deafness and Sign language. • Three students from R. V. College for Engineering also visited us to start a program on Recognition of Signs as their project. • We had attended a Job Fair at Samarthanam, where around 600 physically challenged people including 100 Deaf individuals participated. Three of our students were asked to join us and they were thrilled to put their sign language knowledge into practice. Most of all they were delighted that the Deaf people were so friendly and joyful. • We were contacted by a leading BPO company to train their employees. They were focused on inclusive employment and clearly understood the need for sign language. They have also requested us to help out with the recruitment and training of the deaf employees. • Two individuals appeared for Grade I course exam. • In the month of February, we had another batch of B.Ed students visiting us.
• We trained the students of Diploma in Special Education for the Level I syllabus of Sign language. • We had 2 MBBS doctors who joined the Grade I sign language course and classes with the Diploma students. • The month of March began with following up at Samarthanam, for the language test conducted by a BPO Company for the Deaf. It was a wonderful experience around 60 deaf people attended the test. They were then instructed about the various training programs conducted by Samarthanam. • We also had a team of 3 film makers at the program, who wanted us to video record signs for a short film as part of a competition. It was a good learning experience for us. The film was made to create social awareness about alcohol among young women. They recorded the scenes and were very delighted that all the dialogues could be signed in the Indian Sign Language. • An international school Trio Tots at Sahakara Nagar, Bangalore, invited us to conduct orientation classes for students in sign language. This was part of the curriculum of signs and symbols. The 1st graders participated enthusiastically in dance, and signed the game. We also had an orientation program for the 2nd and 4th graders, with songs and signs. It was a wonderful new experience teaching tiny tots who learnt all the signs and danced to the songs. The older ones were given a quiz in sign language in which all students participated. We also had a special education teacher and a trained counselor who joined for the Functional Sign Language Course.

Mothers Training Center On March 1st , The Mothers Training Center celebrated their 11th anniversary. On this occasion, staff members Mrs. Mamatha and Mrs. Manjula demonstrated teaching methods to teach children with hearing loss to fathers. Mrs. Alphonsa gave a talk on parent’s role in bringing up a special child. Mrs. Pragna gave a talk on Speech and language development in normal children • On Jan. 1st , children came to the center wearing new dresses, children wished their teachers and gave them flowers and New Year was celebrated by cutting a cake. • Netaji Subhaschandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda’s birthday was celebrated. Children and their mothers were briefed about the leaders’ life history and their contribution to our country. • January 11th Makara Sankranthi, festival of spring was celebrated by children of Mothers Training Center and children and mothers prepared “Ellu-Bella” and “Pongal” and they were explained the significance of the festival. • On January 30th, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was observed as ‘Martyrs’ Day’. The children were taught to chant the ‘Meera Bhajan’ and the Father of the Nation was honored by children with flowers and 2 minutes silence was observed. • On March 8th Women’s day was celebrated, various competitions were conducted to mothers and winners were given away prizes. • On March 16th Ugadi festival was celebrated by children of MTC and children and mothers prepared “Bevu-Bella” and were explained the significance of the festival and the Panchaga was shown and its significance was explained to mothers and children.
Meetings
At a parent meeting on January 2018, Mr. Mallikarjun, a father of a child with hearing impairment was invited to interact with about 25 fathers in the mothers training center. He shared his experiences and spoke about the importance of a father’s role in development of the child’s language and in mainstreaming their wards.

Talks
On 15th February, Mrs. Bhuvana Kalyan Ram from Resilient Minds Rehabilitation Trust gave a talk on Importance of developing literacy skills in young children and oriented the mothers about various techniques to prepare teaching learning materials. 20

SASH Corner The Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) conducted a Rangoli competition on 14th February, 2018, and Ethnic Day for the staff and students on 15th February, 2018. All the students and staff looked dazzling in their ethnic wear. Students put up an amazing show of diversity in our very own country as they danced and set the audience into a fit of excitement. Students also showcased their unity and variety among their classes as they walked the ramp together. At the end of the event, Mr. Ethnic and Ms. Ethnic were crowned by Dr. Anita Reddy to Mohan Dinho of II BASLP, and Sushma P. of III BASLP respectively. The students of 2nd M.Sc. bagged the 1st prize for Rangoli competition, and 2nd prize was bagged by the II BASLP students. The day ended on a sweet note with a traditional Indian delicacy. On 3rd March 2018, Inter College Indoor Sports meet was conducted at the institute. Students from Samvaad
and Naseema Institutes of Speech and Hearing also participated in all the events which included ‘Badminton’, ‘Chess’, ‘Carom’, ‘Darts’, and ‘Table Tennis’, to name a few. On 9th March 2018, Outdoor Sports Meet was held at the ISCKON grounds. All students participated with energy and enthusiasm in events such as Athletics, Cricket (for girls), Tug of War, Shot-put, Football etc. The Overall Sports Trophy was bagged by the III BASLP. The awards for Best Player-Male and Female were awarded to Abin Benny and Ans Thomas respectively, both from II BASLP, for their unmatched sportsmanship and skill. ISHA-BC Sports meet was held at the Veterinary College Grounds, Hebbal. The students of Dr. SRC ISH participated in the sports meet and won 1st prize for ‘Cricket (for Girls)’, ‘Throw ball’, ‘Volley ball’ and ‘Tug of War’. The Overall Winner’s Trophy was also awarded to Dr. SRC ISH.

Keeping ISH Safe A Fire Safety Demonstration was conducted on 15th February 2018. Trained persons from AS Fire Services educated all staff and students of the institute on types of fire extinguishers and their composition, ways in which fires can start, and situations that might require the use of a fire extinguisher. They also demonstrated the handling and use of a fire extinguisher and allowed some of the audience to try putting out a small fire.

Even though diagnosis is completed at this age, fitting of devices might be after another year or so because of cost, availability, cosmetics and so on. This gap between identification and rehabilitation will eventually turn out to be detrimental for outcomes - larger the gap, poorer the outcome. The author

Vice Principal HOD - Hearing Studies Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing Are you, by any chance a parent of a child with hearing problems? Have you had the experts tell you “Oh, you have come very late, not too much can be expected even after treatment”. Have you been asked “When did you realize that your child was having a hearing issue? What have you done since then?” It is not easy to accept the fact that there may be something wrong with the apple of your eye. Even though you suspect or you have elders in the family who suggest that the infant is not responding like how he/she should, it is a long time before you actually take the step to get the issue solved. There may have been anecdotal stories of your family members being the same, maybe yourself developing speech slowly or children being too active to talk etc. At this juncture, I should mention that people are not aware of specialists who specifically deal with hearing loss. Thus you might have met the family physician first. Your concern may have been that child is not speaking. The doctor might have told you to wait and watch. On the other hand, you might have been sent to a Pediatrician/ ENT specialist. They might have directed you to the audiologist. Then the child had to undergo a series of tests, some of which needed to be repeated for confirmation of diagnosis. Some conditions may take time to resolve such as middle ear infections. Thus by the time you got a final diagnosis, precious time may have been lost. In the USA, the policy as per JCIH (2007) is 1-3-6, identification of hearing loss within the first month of birth, confirmation by the 3rd month and rehabilitation to begin by 6 months. It is possible to carry out identification as early as that because all deliveries are hospitalbased and screening has been made mandatory before discharge from hospital. In India however, the scenario varies somewhat. Availability of specialists, equipment, awareness, deliveries at home etc make it difficult to reach each and every child born. By the time the child is 24
Scientific evidence shows that the earlier the identification of hearing loss, the better it is to utilize the capacity of the neural structure and also for reorganization. The concept of critical period for development suggests that infancy is the best time to forge neural connections, strengthen and retain them. In case of a normal hearing child, he/ she is exposed to speech from the moment he is born. Though he/she is not talking per se, you notice that some vocalizations are produced with different patterns to indicate needs. For example, you are able to make out that the child is hungry or wet himself or wants to go to sleep etc just by listening to these patterns. Over the duration of the first year, the child is stringing some sounds together, though it doesn’t appear meaningful and finally starts uttering single words. By three-four years of age, the child is getting ready for school, he follows some conversational rules, knows when to take turns, how to be interactive in a group etc. Unless this skill, called language competency is established, he would not be able to cope in the learning atmosphere. Obviously further refinement occurs as he moves from the primary school to high school level and further. All of us have experienced difficulty in learning a new language as adults. Some of us may manage to have everyday competency but mastery to manipulate the new language as we do using our first language may not be achieved. This suggests that the best time to learn is in early childhood, that too in the first year of life. All of us master our mother tongue with ease. You heard others speaking, you imbibed words easily, your vocabulary grew with exposure to communicative interactions, you interpreted based on previous experience and the context .No one sat with you and taught you formally, there was no curriculum. It was mostly incidental learning, learnt as the situation was happening. For a child with HL, there is no access to the world of sound. If he is not stimulated early, the neural connections may not get established. Thus, the emphasis on early identification and early rehabilitation is essential. The latter doesn’t mean only the fitting of the device. It is mandatory that intensive and consistent speech language stimulation has to be provided to establish and strengthen the neural connections. A Colorado University study in the mid 1990’s has reported that children who were identified and fitted with hearing aids before 6 months of age were able to match their normal hearing peers in

language at 3 years of age. Children identified at a later age and also those who get fitted with devices later are at the risk of never matching up to their age-matched peers in language skills. The ultimate result may be poor academic achievements, vocational, and social opportunities. Though India has a long way to go for universal new born screening to be best practice, or have the 1-3-6 policy in place, efforts are being made at institute/hospital level to identify the condition as early as possible by carrying out neonatal hearing screening (NHS). At present, such services are available to high risk neonates. The
Department of Hearing Studies at Dr. SRC ISH participates in neonatal screening at three hospitals namely, Vanivilas (Government), CSI hospital and The Shishuka centre for children. This is targeted NHS meant for high risk babies using OAE testing as the tool. If babies fail the first screen, a rescreen has to be done after a few days. Further failure indicates diagnostic testing which is taken care of at the Institute with a more detailed test protocol. Our aim is to reduce the gap between identification and rehabilitation such that the child and family can utilize the critical period of development to the maximum.

Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing It takes less than a second to complete one swallow; seems pretty quick and easy, doesn’t it? Sometimes you won’t even realize the entire process of swallowing, as it occurs without your knowledge. But this process of swallowing is not as easy as it looks and feels. This wonderful process of swallowing is a coordinated action of your breathing system as well as your feeding system. There is also participation of nerves and muscles that work in coordination to ensure that the food or liquid or even your own saliva enters into the right pipe i.e. the food pipe. This is the most essential skill for efficient swallow as the food pipe and wind pipe lie side by side and it is not easy for the food that goes down from your mouth to choose the right pathway. When the food enters the wrong pipe, it is a very alarming condition as it can be fatal. When food reaches places that it’s not supposed to, it is considered as a foreign body and the lung house starts resisting its presence. Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies. Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level. Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively. Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service. Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking. Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs. Our experts in the institute effectively carry out this specialised service. 32
Noise Measurement: Identifying ‘noise’ as a cause for hearing loss, our Institute provides services to measure the noise levels in factories, work places and public areas. Our experts with appropriate noise measuring equipment do extensive stury and report on the permissible or hazardous limits, by which measures can be taken to prevent hearing damages of the people in those environments.
Department of Speech Language Sciences Voice Clinic: Our Institute is adequately equipped with talent and technology to diagnose and treat voice disorders such as hoarseness, scratchy voice, breathy voice, difficulty with loudness, pain or discomfort while speaking or singing, etc. Endostroboscopy: The Institute is equipped with state of the art Endostroboscope facility to assess vocal cord vibration patterns, mucosal pliability, study the underlying layered structure of the vocal folds, etc. This accurate diagnostics help the patient to get the most appropriate treatment.
Speech Therapy Services Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing deals with a number of investigatory and treatment protocols related to speech disabilities. Misarticulation - a speech defect in which an individual substitutes, omits, adds or distorts the speech sounds which results in the speech being unintelligible. Stuttering - is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, disrupting the normal flow of speech, sometimes accompanied by struggling behaviors. Cleft lip and Palate - refers to a physical condition wherein a child is born with a split or torn lip(s) with a hole in the roof of the mouth leading to speech disorders. Cerebral Palsy (CP) - reflects a non progressive group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordinations due to anomaly of the developing brain.

Autism - a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior which manifests within the very first two years of life. Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain. Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth. Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent. Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing. Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.
Psychology Unit The Institute has eminent expertise to conduct developmental assessments on children to identify developmental delays (DQ/SQ). IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are conducted to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of an individual’s mental abilities. Intelligence Tests: Studies the general intellectual abilities of an individual to measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability. Personality test: Aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Behavior modification: Is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disibility Assessment: Evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child. Other Unique Specialized Services Reaching out beyond medical diagnostic and clinical services, the Institute has enlarged its commitment to the cause through founding and efficient management of schools that cater to specific needs : School for children with Autism and Learning Disability for slow learners. Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired that provides primary and middle school main-stream education in Kannada and English medium for hearing impaired children. Sign Language Training trains individuals with basic sign language skills necessary to communicate with individuals with hearing impairment and become professional interpreters for them through short term and diploma level courses in Indian Sign language. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) through which the institute provides coaching and training for individuals appearing for examinations conducted by NIOS, for out-of-school children with special needs. Mothers’ Training Centre that provides early and intensive intervention for young children with hearing impairment by providing adequate training for their mother. The services offered by the Institute are expanding meeting every emerging need in the society. Placement Cell - A separate cell that is well connected with the corporate world has been set up for finding rewarding and suitable jobs / careers for speech and hearing impaired adults. Mobile Camps and Outreach Screening Services are regularly conducted at neonatal wards of hospitals and nursing homes, schools, villages, community health centres, institutions and organisations which identify speech, hearing and learning problems.
