Junction City Central Library Project 01:

This library for Junction City, Kansas is designed to reflect the simple brick materials and historic charm of the surrounding buildings while introducing a strong, contemporary element: a curving spine that shapes the entire interior. This spine is made of a concrete core lined with floor-to-ceiling wood bookshelves that acts as the building’s “backbone,” both structurally and spatially. Organizing the main spaces, while guiding visitors through the library.

As it reaches outward through the facade, the spine becomes a clear gesture of the library “reaching out to the community,” inviting people into a warm, accessible, and supportive public space. The design aims to create a welcoming civic place rooted in Junction City’s character while serving as a central resource for the community.

Italian Cultural Center Project 02:

Located in New York City, in Manhattan on 37th Street between Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue, the Italian Cultural Center is conceived as an abstraction of the traditional, everyday Italian home. Rather than Italy’s grand cathedrals or palazzos, the project draws inspiration from the quieter architecture of daily life consisting of courtyards, layered thresholds, shared balconies, and intimate gathering rooms. These domestic spatial principles are scaled up for this urban design, transforming the cultural center into a collective home for the Italian culture within the city of New York.

Materiality

The front facade is articulated through a series of pushed and pulled volumes, evoking the stacked rhythm of an Italian hill town adapted to the compressed urban fabric of New York City. Programmatic elements are expressed outwardly, creating depth, shadow, and a form. like homes built over time. Terracotta cladding wraps the steel frame structure, while aluminum composite panels emphasize the horizontal bands that reveal the floor levels, reinforcing a layered facade language typical of Italian architecture. The top floor holds a dual performance space and cinema, celebrating Italy’s theatrical and film traditions as a crown to the composition. The facade becomes a diagram of the interior. Revealing a stacked city within.

Third Floor Approach from South Fire Stairs

Materiality reinforces warmth and intimacy. Authentic Italian mosaic tiles ground the floor. Replicas of classic Italian statues anchor the atrium space with a skylight overhead that washes the interior with natural light, casting shadows that emphasize the texture and surface throughout the day. The atrium operates as a reinterpreted courtyard, an essential Italian strategy, where the key programatic spaces and circulation occurs around.

Mount Mitchell Pavilion Project 03:

This pavilion is designed to visually emerge naturally from the mound at Mount Mitchell, responding directly to the prairie landscape and surrounding ecosystem. Inspired by native grasses, wildlife, and the contours of the land, the organic form mirrors the shape of the mound while minimizing site disruption. Constructed from sustainable wood, the woven structure filters light, provides natural ventilation, and creates a shaded, comfortable environment through passive design strategies. The pavilion is organized into three simple spaces for rest, learning, and viewing, offering visitors a place to pause and connect with the land.
