Page-turning voyage awaits for Isaac libraries A nationally-recognised library event is set to unleash the inner workings of a child's imagination in Isaac.
A nationally-recognised library event is set to unleash the inner workings of a child’s imagination in Isaac. Isaac Regional Council libraries will dive into the creative pool of literature for the 2017 CBCA Children’s Book Week from August 19-26. Mayor Anne Baker said the week’s theme Escape to Everywhere will encourage children to embark on a page-turning voyage with a book. “Established in 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) was founded at a time when Australian children’s books were few," Mayor Baker said. “And Australian authors and illustrators were virtually unknown.
“Each year, across Isaac, the CBCA’s Children’s Book Week is a prime opportunity to discover favourite and new stories. “This year, Escape to Everywhere will take children on an adventure, exploring the wonderful world of books and sharing the amazing shortlisted CBCA Children’s Books of the Year.” 2017 Children Book Week celebrations in Clermont Library - Friday, August 25 - 9.30am to 10.30am Mayor Baker has encouraged children to take part in this fun event by bring their beloved book or dressing as their favourite book character. Colleen's Walk for Cancer - update contributed by Colleen Nicholas Every time I think the track has thrown the most difficult section at me, it proves me wrong! And this week has been no different. So many contrasts in the landscape and so much power and beauty! I was very pleased to have taken Jacko the ‘Track Angel’s’ advice and stayed at his B&B to ride out the wind, rain and hail. The first night back on the track saw me reach Franklin Hut after a solid climb up Douglas Hill and (surprisingly) a day with dry feet! It was quite a flash hut as it has a covered deck area close to the river and is built on stilts and has wooden floors as well. Bush rats and possums are very determined and cheeky and invade everything. So up went my tent (ready for predicted storm) plus walking poles handy for controlling marauding monsters. All my gear went into a tub supplied for campers. I noticed that the blighters had already chewed holes in the top but I did some swift work with a piece of shade cloth I brought (my mat) and stuffed in the holes. Thankfully the little blighters left me in peace and I had a good nights’ rest. I saw two just on dark and they are just huge!! I think my preparations may have put them off… I was being very relaxed about the tiger snakes due to winter but Jacko had lectured me that they are still about in this area, just sluggish. They prefer the wet swampy areas as frogs one of their main foods. At one point, I saw two massive kangaroos. One was only 3 metres in front of me, so he took his time having a very serious scratch whilst I stood still. While I was thinking "Oh boy you stink like an old boar pig" I did not realize I had another HUGE buck standing a metre from me in the bushes. He was the one I could smell so strong! As you can imagine I had a bit of a fright but they both vacated from my track. I was very excited to see some seals frolicking near some rocks (mostly flippers, but still seals). I was amazed how they stayed in a group with the massive sea. Also spotted 3 massive whale bones in the rocks. Apparently, a whale washed ashore 2 years ago.
I have also done a spot of ‘touristing’ this week. I very bravely and proudly walked the Tree Top Walk and made it to the end (after I turned back after 10 metres to bail and then returned to have another go at it!). It is an amazing feat to have such a bridge over the top of the trees. Really not a happy place for me so probably dented a few pipes with my iron grip. I was hoping I did not have to hit my Spot Tracker to say "rescue me" "I am stuck"!! Amazing views and certainly gives a different perspective of the forest. I was very relieved to be back on the ground to hug a tree and to enjoy a calming walk on the Ancient Empire Walk. The track continues to constantly change scenery and landscapes, vegetation and soil types. A remarkable bio-diversity - from the Tingle and Karri forest to the rugged coast. A steep descent to the South Coast Highway followed by a flat walk along the old Denmark - Nornalup railway alignment. Swampy areas where I balanced extremely well on skinny logs over water areas as I was determined I would not fill my boots. Some open farm country where there was a large flock of ewes and lambs. A view over forest, farming, the Peaceful Bay, sweeping beaches and spectacular coastal waters as far as I could see. The track passed through what they call "a botanical wonderland" as contains the restricted, rare and spectacular red flowering gum and the coastal sheoaks. Closer to the coast the track follows coastal ridges and sheltered swales dominated by Stunted Bullish and Coastal Yate and Peppermint.

The CLERMONT RAG The coast between Conspicuous Beach and Point Irwin is where whales can be seen. I looked hard but no luck. There have been slippery massive rocks, a section of a shiny-leaded blister bush that will blister the skin, boggy creeks, and the whole time the surf is pounding with fierce strength. I am always a little unsure about walking along the beach’s as the sea is just so powerful.
They also could tell me that a "large" dugite snake was hibernating under the wooden floor of the hut, but not to worry as it is sluggish at present and won't come out in this cold wind! I have my tent up...for wind protection! The section from Peaceful Bay to Boat Harbour Hut was wet, wobbly and the most challenging of the whole track. I crossed Peaceful Bay in a canoe! This has been my concern right from the beginning of my Bibbulmun planning. Quite frankly was freaking out about it but because Daniel (the German from Jacko’s) was going to do it too. If Daniel had not been confident, I would not have taken it on.
The track can be very difficult to find in these beach sections as I think the indicators disappear in the sand easy. Conspicuous Cliff was another highlight this week. Outstanding views in all directions. A bit of the WOW factor!! There were signs up warning of cliff collapse. I thought it would be a strong area as it was limestone but apparently, it breaks away. So, no hanging around that area. The wind has been so strong I reckoned I would end up with a kinked neck and one leg shorter than the other from leaning in to the wind to prevent tumbling off the track. I’ve even reached the stage on the top of a sand dune where I just wanted to howl in the wind. Bit like a dingo! What an adventure this is! Another week of wonderful people on my journey. At Rame Hut some rangers checked in on me. They have been keeping tabs on me due to the severe weather and checking I am okay.
It was still pouring rain when we arrived at the shed so waited till it settled and hoping for calmer water. Daniel took my backpack in his boat, so I very bravely donned the life jacket and off I went. Absolutely terrified, but trying to be a cool calm Grandma! What a flipping joke! It was only about 200 metres but to me it seemed miles. I am definitely not a water bird. I will not enlarge or describe in any detail my "behaviour"! Suffice to say that I arrived on the other bank at the shed crying, sweating and swearing that I would "never ever" do a repeat of that performance. Daniel was laughing as he said it looked like I was pro-rower and just skimmed across the top of the water without missing a beat! I said it was more because I was an old duck frantically paddling and flapping my wings to cover the distance. For a person who gets seasick walking on the boardwalk at a Marina this was a huge shift of the comfort zone. I always said I need a pot of dirt in a boat so I can stay grounded with my thumb stuck in the dirt! I am so relieved to be past that section and at least I can say "I did it!" My time on the Bibbulman is very quickly coming to an end. I can almost see it from here! Hard to believe my adventure is ending and feel so privileged to be part of this incredible place.

Fundraising gala leads local conversation to inspire change A premier fundraising gala event in Isaac is leading the local conversation of inspiring change surrounding the stigma around mental illness.

The 2017 Mayor’s Charity Ball will raise the bar high to help raise much needed funds for mental health initiatives for Isaac communities.
“Acoustic guitarist Kate Lochyer and cabaret pianist Bec Williams will be the opening act and dinner entertainment respectively.
Moranbah Community Centre will provide the backdrop to Isaac’s night of nights under the stars.
“The Charity Auction prizes will whip the crowd into a fundraising frenzy thanks to the very generous donations from businesses, companies and trading partners.
Isaac Regional Charity Fund Director and Mayor Anne Baker said it was a chance for guests to have an unforgettable time of fun dancing, dining and fundraising under the stars. “Mental illness affects one in five Australians at some stage in their life,” Mayor Baker said. “The aim of the night is to make a real difference. We need to become aware of the issues and disadvantages people face. “People living with mental illness will often experience stigma and discrimination from friends, family, employers and the community as a whole. “The 2017 Mayor’s Charity Ball is a leader in this conversation to help break the stigma.” Mayor Baker said a show stopping line up of entertainment will be led by master of ceremonies Nigel the Entertainer. “Our headline act Mezzanine will perform chart toppers across the eras late into the night,” she said.
“Your support through attendance or donations to the charity auction will play a major part in raising funds on the evening and awareness for this cause.” Mayor Baker said tickets will be on sale next month. “Funds raised will support initiatives for this issue that devastates families and communities,” she said. “This is a chance to show your support for a very worthy cause.” The stylish black tie affair will include a three-course dinner, live music, prizes, a charity auction and much more. I took the free bus to Moranbah on Saturday night for QMF and I am convinced it’s the way to travel. Sadly I was one of only 11 people who took advantage of this service on both nights, which was a pity. I attended our Clermont Work Camp meeting a few weeks ago and I am so impressed with the quantity and quality of their work. Give them a wave when you see them out and about doing lots of great things for our little town. Our parks and gardens are also looking spectacular, thank you to the Council crews who keep them looking that way. I continue to have many issues raised with me concerning our town and I do look into each and every one so please keep them coming. That is what you have put me here for. Students set to find their future in Isaac More than 800 high school students had the chance to find their future at the Education and Career Pathways Expo in Moranbah yesterday. The Moranbah State High School event, which is proudly sponsored by Isaac Regional Council, provided career opportunities and tertiary study options from a variety of sectors.
“This Expo is vital to building Isaac’s future in all sectors of the region as we look towards maintaining a sustainable and efficiently working communities,” she said.
Staged at Moranbah State High School, students, parents and carers discovered opportunities from mining, local government, childcare, education, defence, police and much more.
“This is an excellent opportunity for students to see where they are able to contribute locally, regionally and globally.
Mayor Anne Baker said Isaac high schools students from Clermont, Dysart and Glenden joined Moranbah pupils at the Expo.
“Expos like this helps build communities, increase opportunities for our youth and allows local businesses to benefit from local activities.”
150 Years of Schooling contributed by Clermont State High School P & C Association Clermont State High School and Clermont State School will be commemorating 150 years of schooling in the Clermont area as well as a reunion of past and present students on the weekend commencing Friday, August 18 and concluding on Sunday, August 20. Come and play with spheroes Spheroes have arrived at the Clermont Library.
After writing a few crime thrillers, a publisher suggest that Rae collaborate with romance author, Peggy Coghlan, to write a historic romantic novel set in the Victorian era. As the publisher requested the novel be published under a female name, Rae and Coghlan chose the name Jessica Stirling after meeting in a Stirling coffee shop.
A sphero is a robotic ball gaming device that can be controlled with a tilt, touch or swing of a smartphone, tablet or Ipad. Come and play with the spheroes during the library’s STEM sessions on from 3.30pm to 4pm on Thursday afternoons. Lego building is also held during this time and bookings are requested.
Jessica Stirling is the pen name of Scottish author, the late Hugh Crawford Rae (November 22, 1935 - September 24, 2014).
After 25 years of writing Jessica Stirling novels, Rae’s real identity became widely known when The Winds from the Hills was shortlisted in 1999 for the Romantic Novelists’ Association Romantic Novel of the Year.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. Open gym This is your opportunity to use the gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.
Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn. The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat. Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness. Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels. Metafit This is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
