Hector Guzmán Music Director and Conductor
Hector Guzmán is music director/ conductor of the Irving, Plano, San Angelo, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras in the USA. He is also “Conductor Emeritus” of the Jalisco Philharmonic in Mexico. He has also achieved an impressive reputation as an organist by winning top prizes in several national and international competitions, including the “Grand Prix de Chartres,” the world’s most prestigious organ competition. Often sought as a guest conductor, appearances have taken him around the world including throughout the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Europe and greater Asia regions. He is a graduate of the National Conservatory of Mexico City, the University of North Texas, and Southern Methodist University. His teachers include luminaries such as Victor Urban, Alfred Mouledous, Robert Anderson, Carlo Maria Giulini, Helmuth Rilling, and his mentor Maestro Anshel Brusilow, as well as the late Maestro Eduardo Mata. Maestro Guzmán has accorded several prestigious honors including the “Meadows” Award, DeVry University’s “Director per Excellence” Award, and “Good Citizenship Medal” in the US, Mexico’s “Outstanding National Young Artist” Award, “Golden Lyre” Award, “Artistic Silver Medal,” Austria’s Embassy, “Mozart Medal.”

Other recognitions include a 2000 listing as an “Outstanding Musicians of the 21st Century” magazine, published by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, 2012 “Man of the Year” Award by NYC’s Madison’s Who’s Who, 2012 North Texas Chapter of “For the Love of Art” Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 “Distinguished Member Award” by the international musical fraternity “Sigma Alpha Iota,” 2017 Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce “Diversity Award for Arts and Culture,” and the 2018 Distinguished Mexican Artist award by the Mexican government for distinguished musical accomplishments outside of Mexico.

From: RETURN OF THE JEDI: Throne Room & End Title * Program Note – A Cowboy in Space is a work composed to describe a lone wolf in a vast galaxy and the grandeur therein. Inspired by the essence of The Mandalorian, the work is designed to blend into the context of the Star Wars universe; yet also function as a powerful and energetic piece within a multitude of musical programs. Though I do not distinctively quote any melodic or motivic content from the original Star Wars trilogy, prequels, sequels or The Mandalorian televised series, I do draw from their established stylistic approaches regarding orchestration and personality to synthesize a new entry into this unique musical entity. This work was commissioned by the Irving Symphony Orchestra as part of the SMU Student Composer in Residence program for the 2021 academic year. I am honored to have the opportunity to share my excitement for the series through a contribution of musical content, and I am grateful to have created a versatile work to be premiered by a versatile orchestra.
