Lanfranco Marcelletti, Jr. Guest Conductor Brazilian born conductor, professor and pianist Lanfranco Marcelletti, Jr., has been recognized by critics and audiences for his important work in music. His engagements as a conductor have brought him to countries and regions of Europe, North and South Americas. Orchestras he has worked with include Brazil Symphony Orchestra (Rio de Janeiro), the Mexican National Orchestra (Mexico City), the Chilean National Symphony (Santiago), the National Theater Orchestra (Brasilia, Brazil), Orchestra del Teatro Comunale de Bologna (Italy), Galicia Symphony Orchestra (La Coruña, Spain), Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra (Cooperstown, USA) and Haydn Chamber Orchestra (London, UK). In the opera world, his most important collaboration was with the Rossini Opera Festival, where he conducted two productions and served as assistant director to the Maestro Alberto Zedda in the renowned Accademia Rossiana. He also conducted productions for the Glimmerglass Opera Festival (New York City Opera’s Summer Festival), Vlaamse Opera (Antwerp, Belgium), Commonwealth Opera (Massachusetts, USA), Teatro Calderón (Valladolid, Spain) and Albany University (USA). In December 2006, he premiered a composed collaborative work with actress Carmen Bermejo which was the children music/ theater play Mozart Deus, at the Teatro Calderón. Awards include first prize in both the II Conducting International Competition, organized by the Chilean Symphony Orchestra and the Giovani Solisti di Roma Competition in piano; Debut Artist Conductor of the Year awarded by the São Paulo Association of Critics of Art; both the Dean’s and Eleazar de Carvalho awards by Yale University. The Pernambuco State Legislature (his native state in Brazil), unanimously awarded a special citation for his work for the music in his city, Recife. Marcelletti attended Yale University (orchestra conducting), where he had as a mentor Maestro Eleazar de Carvalho, the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna (piano, composition), the Musik Akademie in Zurich (piano) and the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música (Recife, Brazil), where he started his music studies. From 2008 to 2015 he held the position of music director of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra in Ithaca,NY and from 2012 to 2019, Marcelletti was music director of Xalapa Symphony Orchestra, and for the Aguascalientes Symphony Orchestra (2020/2021), both in Mexico. From 1997 until 2011 he was part of the faculty of Amherst College and University of Massachusetts.

Guest Artists Dzmitry Ulasiuk & Haley Sicking Pianist Dzmitry Ulasiuk has a zest for life that transfers into musical panache, possessing ferocious technical skills yet a refined ability to coax every detail, every note, every lyrical phrase out of the piano. Soft-spoken and humble, Dzmitry has a reputation for exquisite interpretations and performances of all genres of classical music. Dzmitry was raised in an environment of classical music performance in Minsk, Belarus. Within a year of professional studies at the State Academy of Music, he made his solo debut with an all-Chopin program in his hometown. A year later, he appeared internationally in the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, Germany, performing Beethoven’s Symphony #7 as arranged for piano solo by Franz Liszt. With his first CD of Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff released in 2019, Dzmitry presented a “strong calling card in the form of this impressive solo CD debut” (Gramophone) and received critical acclaim for his fresh interpretations, lyricism and musicality. His playing “brims with rhythmic swagger…and lush, lyrical themes mesmerize… it is his style of interpretation that sets him apart.” (MusicWeb Int’l). A winner or laureate of multiple international piano competitions, he has performed world-wide and is “capable of making a huge quasi-orchestral sound” as well as “captivating lightness.” (Fanfare Magazine) During his Carnegie debut, a critic wrote, “There are times when a reviewer simply decides to put pencil and paper away and enjoy the music, and this was one of those times.” Dzmitry’s second CD of piano sonatas and mazurkas by Alexander Scriabin is coming out soon. Dzmitry holds several academic and piano performance degrees, including a DMA from the University of North Texas. His main musical mentors have been Liudmila S. Shelomentseva (Belarus State Academy of Music), Tamás Ungár (TCU), Joaquín Achúcarro (SMU), and Pamela Mia Paul (UNT). www.dzmitryulasiuk.com The Steinway Concert Grand Piano for tonight’s performance was made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Pamela Mia Paul, Regents Professor - Piano, University of North Texas College of Music. Soprano Haley Sicking thrills audiences with her versatile

performances in opera, concert, recital, musical theatre, jazz, as well as early and contemporary music. In one of her signature roles as Rosalinde from Strauss’ “die Fledermaus”, she is nothing short of a star: a tireless, secure soprano that manages to be both voluminous and flexible. (Parterre box) Voce di meche wrote: “If the role of Rosalinde could have been better portrayed by anyone but stunning soprano Haley Sicking, we have yet to imagine it. Her comedic skills are prodigious and her lusty soprano shone in the Czardas.” She is truly a treasure to behold in her numerous operatic roles. Haley made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2016 as a soloist in Rutter’s Requiem and the world premiere of Glasgow’s Requiem. She will soon be returning to this beautiful hall to perform the Faure Requiem. She has also performed a concert tour in China including operatic and musical theatre repertoire in 18 different cities. Some of Haley’s work with professional ensembles and choruses, as well as Oratorio work includes: Poulenc’s Gloria, Rutter’s Requiem, Glasgow’s Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation, Bach’s B minor mass, Faure’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Theresianmesse, Mendelssohn’s Saint Paul, Rutter’s Requiem, Dubois’ The Seven Last Words of Christ, Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, O’Regan’s The Ecstasies Above, Poulenc’s Tristis Vinea Electa, Saint-Saens’s Christmas Oratorio, Mahler’s Ich bin der Welt – abhanden gekommen and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music. A native of Dallas, TX, Haley Sicking holds a Master’s in Music from The Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She earned a Bachelors in Music from the University of North Texas, where she was awarded the prestigious Winspear Opera Fellowship and the McKinley award for top incoming student.

Hector Guzmán Music Director and Conductor

Hector Guzmán is music director/ conductor of the Irving, Plano, San Angelo, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras in the USA. He is also “Conductor Emeritus” of the Jalisco Philharmonic in Mexico. He has also achieved an impressive reputation as an organist by winning top prizes in several national and international competitions, including the “Grand Prix de Chartres,” the world’s most prestigious organ competition. Often sought as a guest conductor, appearances have taken him around the world including throughout the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Europe and greater Asia regions. He is a graduate of the National Conservatory of Mexico City, the University of North Texas, and Southern Methodist University. His teachers include luminaries such as Victor Urban, Alfred Mouledous, Robert Anderson, Carlo Maria Giulini, Helmuth Rilling, and his mentor Maestro Anshel Brusilow, as well as the late Maestro Eduardo Mata. Maestro Guzmán has accorded several prestigious honors including the “Meadows” Award, DeVry University’s “Director per Excellence” Award, and “Good Citizenship Medal” in the US, Mexico’s “Outstanding National Young Artist” Award, “Golden Lyre” Award, “Artistic Silver Medal,” Austria’s Embassy, “Mozart Medal.”

Other recognitions include a 2000 listing as an “Outstanding Musicians of the 21st Century” magazine, published by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, 2012 “Man of the Year” Award by NYC’s Madison’s Who’s Who, 2012 North Texas Chapter of “For the Love of Art” Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 “Distinguished Member Award” by the international musical fraternity “Sigma Alpha Iota,” 2017 Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce “Diversity Award for Arts and Culture,” and the 2018 Distinguished Mexican Artist award by the Mexican government for distinguished musical accomplishments outside of Mexico.

He spent five years there as a touring bassist and working film composer based in that tri-state area. After moving to Texas in 2013, Michael decided to pursue his master’s degree at SMU - to be completed next month. This piece was written as a reflection of quarantine. It ultimately became a piece of illumination and celebration. “Despite the limits with live performances, I found this piece to be precisely what I named it - inevitable. It is also a token of my affection for my fiancé. Thank you for your support, not only for our love, but my craft. Despite this work being dedicated to one person, I hope all who listen hear a voice that reflects celebration and optimism.” Patrons will not be admitted into the hall while the concert is in progress. Please silence cell phones. We ask that no flash photography be used, but taking pictures is permitted. Thank you for your cooperation.

True to the mission of the Concert4Kids, Peter and the Wolf introduces children to the instruments of the orchestra with a representation of each character in this dramatic story. The characters – boy, bird, duck, cat, grandfather, wolf, hunters – and their doings have been beloved by younger and older audiences since introduced by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. The ISO proudly carried on this tradition much to the delight of an engaged audience. From the classic of the past to dreams of the future and outer space, the orchestra and ballet showcase came together for a beautiful afternoon of sensory delight, emotional joy and patriotism.

About our Pre-Concert Speaker DAVID BARD-SCHWARZ David Bard-Schwarz has studied English (University of Virginia), Comparative Literature (Indiana University), German (Universität Hamburg), Music Theory (the University of Texas at Austin), and Interactive Telecommunications (New York University). He has taught in the College of Music at the University of North Texas since 2002. David has published three books on interdisciplinary studies and music: Listening Subjects: Music, Psychoanalysis, Culture (Duke 1997), Listening Awry: Music and Alterity in German Culture (Minnesota 2006), and An Introduction to Electronic Art through the Teaching of Jacques Lacan: Strangest Thing (Routledge, 2014). Before becoming a music professor he had a number of jobs: "picking off" in a sardine factory, paper route, waiter, construction worker, bowmaker's apprentice (William Salchow, New York), mental health worker, ESL instructor (Hamburg), translator (German to English), rhetoric instructor (SMU), and editor. In addition to bringing music and interdisciplinary studies to people, he enjoys cooking (especially chicken soup, lasagna, cream pies), working out to stay in shape, and taking long walks with his wife Ania through the Texas countryside. He is married to Ania Bard-Schwarz (Concertmaster emeritus of the Irving Symphony Orchestra) and Adjunct Professor of Violin at Texas Woman's University and the University of North Texas. 2021-2022 Season 15
