2020-2021 Guest Artists Still “Comin’ Right At Ya!”— celebrating 50 Years of Asleep at the Wheel, the number of individual artists and bands who have sustained a thriving career for a half century is infinitesimally small. Against all odds, Asleep at the Wheel is one of these. The stars aligned in 1970 when three friends, Ray Benson, Lucky Oceans and Leroy Preston, moved to Paw Paw, West Virginia (it’s not a made-up place, you can look it up). It was there that their dream of forming a band began after a mutual friend gave them access to his uncle’s cabin on an apple orchard just outside of town. The three friends began to quite literally—woodshed and found others who would join them in their mission to play old style Roots/Americana music. This was long before the genre/movement even had a name. After a trip to the outhouse, Lucky lived up to his name and suggested the band be called Asleep at the Wheel and so it was to be for the next 50 years. Photo by Mike Shore
Since inception, Asleep at the Wheel has received 10 GRAMMY® Awards, was cited by the Country Music Association as 1976 Touring Band of the Year and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Americana Music Association in 2009. They have released 31 albums, charted more than 20 singles on the country charts. Billboard commented on the band’s catalog most succinctly: “Everything this act has ever released is simply spectacular.” Most recently, Asleep at the Wheel has been invigorated by a fresh new lineup and the release of New Routes—their latest album. It is a bracing blend of original songs and vibrant cover material along with some unanticipated new musical tangents. Asleep at the Wheel has demonstrated convincingly that they are more relevant, enjoyable and musically nimble than at any time in their 50-year history. The 6’7” Ray Benson has been the one constant in Asleep at the Wheel since 1970. He notes, “I’ve been told that I’m relentless, so I guess I am....I’m just doing what I believe I’m meant to do—I’m singing and playing and writing better than I ever have. My role and concept of leading a band has never changed. It’s gathering the best musicians I can find and convince them to play to the best of their ability. I just try and make the best decisions possible and kick some ass every night onstage. I’ve made it this far and don’t feel like I or the band will be slowing down anytime soon.”

Hector Guzmán Music Director and Conductor
Hector Guzmán is music director/ conductor of the Irving, Plano, San Angelo, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras in the USA. He is also “Conductor Emeritus” of the Jalisco Philharmonic in Mexico. He has also achieved an impressive reputation as an organist by winning top prizes in several national and international competitions, including the “Grand Prix de Chartres,” the world’s most prestigious organ competition. Often sought as a guest conductor, appearances have taken him around the world including throughout the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Europe and greater Asia regions. He is a graduate of the National Conservatory of Mexico City, the University of North Texas, and Southern Methodist University. His teachers include luminaries such as Victor Urban, Alfred Mouledous, Robert Anderson, Carlo Maria Giulini, Helmuth Rilling, and his mentor Maestro Anshel Brusilow, as well as the late Maestro Eduardo Mata. Maestro Guzmán has accorded several prestigious honors including the “Meadows” Award, DeVry University’s “Director per Excellence” Award, and “Good Citizenship Medal” in the US, Mexico’s “Outstanding National Young Artist” Award, “Golden Lyre” Award, “Artistic Silver Medal,” Austria’s Embassy, “Mozart Medal.”

Other recognitions include a 2000 listing as an “Outstanding Musicians of the 21st Century” magazine, published by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, 2012 “Man of the Year” Award by NYC’s Madison’s Who’s Who, 2012 North Texas Chapter of “For the Love of Art” Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 “Distinguished Member Award” by the international musical fraternity “Sigma Alpha Iota,” 2017 Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce “Diversity Award for Arts and Culture,” and the 2018 Distinguished Mexican Artist award by the Mexican government for distinguished musical accomplishments outside of Mexico.

A SALUTE TO MRS. CONNIE DUNN
Outgoing Chair of the Irving Symphony Board Connie Dunn soon fulfills her term as Board Chair for the Irving Symphony Orchestra. Devoting countless hours of voluntary service to both Boards of the Orchestra and the Irving Symphony League, Connie plays a role in securing corporate sponsorships for concert presentations and outreach programs. She has judiciously researched many grant opportunities for funding with a degree of success that has sustained these community outreach programs over the years. Her decades of volunteer service to the Board of Directors, the Irving Symphony Orchestra, and the Irving Symphony League deserve many accolades for a job well done. A native of Irving, Connie has always enjoyed involvement in her community. She is a graduate of Irving High School, where many of her volunteer efforts began. She served in numerous volunteer positions while her daughter attended Irving ISD and later served on the Irving Schools Foundation Board. She has been a champion for the opportunity for children to be involved in the arts, including ISO’s successful “Concerts4Kids”program. As we all know, music is powerful in countless ways, and to have such a staunch supporter and advocate in a volunteer role to that end is an incredible blessing to Irving, Texas. Thank you, Connie, for over 30 years of service in a variety of roles! We look forward to many more years of creative collaboration.
