2020-2021 Featured Artist Violinist Ordabek Duissen distinguishes himself having won awards at numerous international competitions—including 1st prize in the Franz Schubert Competition in Italy, 2nd prize in the International Violin Competition in Astana, Kazakhstan, the diploma in the Michelangelo Abbado International Competition in Milan, Italy, and Grand Prize in the National Competition in Kazakhstan. Born into a family of renowned musicians in Almaty, Kazakhstan, he began studying the violin at the age of seven at K. Baiseitova State Special Music School for gifted children. At the age of 11 he won 1st prize at the International competition in Central Asia and former Soviet Union’s republics and had his debut with an orchestra at the age of 10. He has participated in various international music festivals as a soloist, concertmaster, and chamber musician at “Music of Laguna” (Italy), “Ost-West Musicfest,” “Mozarteum” (Austria), Pacific Music Festival (Japan), AIMS festival in Graz, Austria, and others. He also had solo appearances in Lincoln Hall, UNESCO. Ordabek has taken master classes with violinists such as Sergei Kravchenko, Eduard Grach (Russia), Takashi Shimizu (Japan), Tuomas Haapanen (Finland), Vadim Gluzman (Israel-USA), Midori, Paul Kantor (USA), and others. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has toured and performed in many countries including the Ukraine, Russia, Italy, France, Austria, Great Britain, South Korea, Mexico, and throughout the United States. Ordabek, a virtuoso violinist, in his native country is remarkably the first violinist to ever perform all 24 Caprices for Violin Solo by Niccolò Paganini. After graduation with honors from the Kazakh National Academy of Music in Astana, Kazakhstan, Ordabek received a Meadows full scholarship and Meadows award to continue his study at Southern Methodist University, Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas. Ordabek also plays in a duo with his sister Dina in the “Duissen-Duo.” In November 2011, he joined the Dallas Opera Orchestra as Assistant Concertmaster. In 2013, Ordabek was awarded the “Honored Artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan” title for his contribution in arts and culture of Kazakhstan. In 2014, Ordabek was awarded the Youth Government award “Daryn” in classical music nomination in Kazakhstan. He joined the Irving Symphony Orchestra as Concertmaster in fall 2019 and is currently a member of Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Section first violin. Along with his lovely wife Zhadrya Gusman, we congratulate the couple on their first born—a son, who was delivered last month on January 26.

Hector Guzmán Music Director and Conductor

Hector Guzmán is music director/ conductor of the Irving, Plano, San Angelo, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras in the USA. He is also “Conductor Emeritus” of the Jalisco Philharmonic in Mexico. He has also achieved an impressive reputation as an organist by winning top prizes in several national and international competitions, including the “Grand Prix de Chartres,” the world’s most prestigious organ competition. Often sought as a guest conductor, appearances have taken him around the world including throughout the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Europe and greater Asia regions. He is a graduate of the National Conservatory of Mexico City, the University of North Texas, and Southern Methodist University. His teachers include luminaries such as Victor Urban, Alfred Mouledous, Robert Anderson, Carlo Maria Giulini, Helmuth Rilling, and his mentor Maestro Anshel Brusilow, as well as the late Maestro Eduardo Mata. Maestro Guzmán has accorded several prestigious honors including the “Meadows” Award, DeVry University’s “Director per Excellence” Award, and “Good Citizenship Medal” in the US, Mexico’s “Outstanding National Young Artist” Award, “Golden Lyre” Award, “Artistic Silver Medal,” Austria’s Embassy, “Mozart Medal.”

Other recognitions include a 2000 listing as an “Outstanding Musicians of the 21st Century” magazine, published by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, 2012 “Man of the Year” Award by NYC’s Madison’s Who’s Who, 2012 North Texas Chapter of “For the Love of Art” Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 “Distinguished Member Award” by the international musical fraternity “Sigma Alpha Iota,” 2017 Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce “Diversity Award for Arts and Culture,” and the 2018 Distinguished Mexican Artist award by the Mexican government for distinguished musical accomplishments outside of Mexico.

SATURDAY | MARCH 27 | 7:30 PM Another spectacular season concludes with the ISO featuring “Asleep at the Wheel.” Join us as we celebrate their 50th anniversary tour. This band of American roots music (best known as country/western swing) has dominated award platforms including 10 Grammy awards, CMA’s Touring Band of the Year in 1976, and Lifetime Achievement in Performance by the 2009 Americana Music Awards.
