Allen Hightower Guest Conductor Allen Hightower is a seventh generation Texan, and resides in McKinney, Texas with his wife, Dr. Kristin Hightower and their two daughters Caroline and Julianne. As the director of Choral Studies at the University of North Texas, Allen leads the master’s and doctoral programs in choral conducting, and oversees a comprehensive choral program of eight ensembles. Allen serves as the conductor of the UNT A Cappella Choir, and the UNT Grand Chorus which collaborates annually with the UNT Symphony Orchestra in performances of major choral-orchestral works. As a member of UNT’s Early Music faculty, he leads the vocal ensemble Vox Aquilae, an artistic partner of the UNT Baroque Orchestra. Since arriving at UNT in 2016, the A Cappella Choir has received invitations to perform for the Texas Music Educators Association in 2020, the national conference of the American Choral Directors Association in 2021, and the Southwestern Region of ACDA in 2022. As a teacher and conductor, Dr. Hightower has visited 30 states, Asia, and Europe. His students hold positions of leadership as choral conductors in public schools, colleges and universities, and churches and community choirs throughout the United States. Prior to his appointment at UNT, Dr. Hightower held the Weston Noble Endowed Chair in Music at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he served as conductor of the renowned Nordic Choir and artistic director of Christmas at Luther. As Luther’s Director of Choral Activities, he gave leadership to a choral program that included four conductors, six choirs, and over 530 singers. Under Dr. Hightower’s direction, the Nordic Choir performed at the 2014 North Central Division of ACDA, recorded six compact discs, made annual concert tours throughout the United States, and toured Europe on two occasions. From 2000-2010, Dr. Hightower served as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Sam Houston State University. During his tenure, the SHSU Chorale toured Europe, performed for the 2007 National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, the 2010 Southwestern Division of ACDA, and the 2003, 2006, and 2010 conventions of the Texas Music Educators Association. His public school teaching career included tenures at Klein High School in Spring, Texas and at Odessa Permian High School in Odessa, where he led the PHS Kantorei and Satin Strings in performance at the 1996 TMEA convention. Outside of his work in the academic setting, Allen has served as the Artistic Director of the Houston Masterworks Chorus and Orchestra, leading an annual concert series of choral-orchestral masterworks. As a deeply committed church musician, he has served Baptist, Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches in Texas, California, and Minnesota. He currently serves at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas, and is the Church Music Vice-President of the Texas Choral Directors Association. Dr. Hightower serves as an Adjunct Professor of Conducting at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. As an orchestral conductor, Allen has recently guest conducted the Irving Symphony Orchestra and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. As a conducting student of the Texas choral legend Bev Henson, Allen earned his undergraduate degree in music education and piano from Sam Houston State University. He went on to earn a master’s degree in choral conducting from the Eastman School of Music where he was a student of Baroque scholar Alfred Mann, and a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from Baylor University, where he served as assistant conductor to Stephen Heyde and accompanist to Donald Bailey and the Baylor Chamber Singers. Allen earned his doctorate in conducting from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he served as assistant conductor to Donald Neuen. Hightower pursued additional orchestral conducting studies with Jung-Ho Pak at the University of Southern California, additional choral conducting studies with Joseph Flummerfelt at Westminster Choir College, and choralorchestral conducting with Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival. After winning first prize in the graduate division of the American Choral Directors Association’s Conducting Competition in 1997, Allen served as assistant to Paul Salamunovich, conductor of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Soloists & Chorus Roster Kori Miller is quickly making a name for herself both as a soloist and professional choral singer having been praised for her rich tone and “...hauntingly beautiful notes” (Charleston Today). Her most recent solo engagements include Telemann’s Canary Cantata, Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Handel’s Messiah, Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem and Serenade to Music, Faure’s Requiem, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Britten’s War Requiem, Brahm’s Requiem, Bach’s Jesu, meine Freude, Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir, Vivaldi’s Gloria, MacMillan’s Miserere, and Bach’s Singet dem Herrn. Ms. Miller previously won a scholarship for Opera Naples’ Young Artist Academy where she studied and performed under the tutelage of baritone, Sherrill Milnes and tenor, Bruce Ford. Ms. Miller is currently completing her D.M.A. in vocal performance and vocal pedagogy at the University of North Texas under the instruction of internationally renowned voice teacher and pedagogue, Dr. Stephen Austin. This spring, she can be seen in the roles of Giannetta from Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Musetta from Puccini’s La Boheme. Megan Gackle has been praised for her florid vocal agility and range, award-winning American mezzosoprano is quickly building her reputation as a versatile vocal artist. Megan’s blossoming career showcases versatility, excellence and adaptability in a variety of vocal genres including opera, jazz, musical theater and concert works. Currently, Megan is based in the DFW Metroplex where she maintains a private voice studio and teaches in the Texas public school system as a head junior high school choir teacher. She has been featured in a variety of operatic roles in a number of operas including Handel’s Oreste, the premiere of All Wounds Bleed with the Chicago Fringe Opera and Latitude 49, Trouble in Tahiti, Cosi Fan Tutte and A Little Night Music. In 2019, Gackle made her Carnegie Hall debut at the Kurt Weill Concert Hall in New York City. In 2017 and 2018, she was awarded second place consecutively, at the Texoma NATS competitions in the graduate division. Her concert performances include mezzo soloist for Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Bach’s Magnificat in D, and Bach’s St. John Passion. Megan holds degrees from Baylor University (M.M and B.M.E) and received the first part of her undergraduate education from Florida State University. Myles Pinder, tenor, is an Indiana native and has been hailed for a voice that is “deep and warm.” Myles was engaged this summer as a Hans and Leslie Fleischner Young Artist with Pittsburgh Festival Opera where he sang the role of Nico (Lysistrata). This season with UNT Opera, Myles sang the role of Jenik (The Bartered Bride). Myles’s previous roles include Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Leo Hubbard (Regina), Sam (Susannah), Martin (The Tender Land), and Alfred (Die Fledermaus). In addition to operatic roles, he has been the tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Haydn’s Theresienmesse. Myles holds an MM from Southern Methodist University and a BA from Butler University. Currently a doctoral candidate and Teaching Fellow at UNT, he enjoys being an active educator and singer. David Robinson has served on the voice faculties of William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of North Texas. He holds the Bachelor of Music Education and the Master of Music in Voice performance from West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. He also earned the Doctor of Musical Arts in voice performance from Southwestern Seminary. He has performed in opera, oratorio and in recital at colleges, universities and churches across the United States, South America, and England and has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Allentown (Pennsylvania), Dallas, Fort Worth, Guadalajara, Mexico and others. Dr. Robinson holds memberships in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, as well as the National Opera Association. Hector Guzmán Music Director and Conductor
Hector Guzmán is music director/ conductor of the Irving, Plano, San Angelo, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras in the USA. He is also “Conductor Emeritus” of the Jalisco Philharmonic in Mexico. He has also achieved an impressive reputation as an organist by winning top prizes in several national and international competitions, including the “Grand Prix de Chartres,” the world’s most prestigious organ competition. Often sought as a guest conductor, appearances have taken him around the world including throughout the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Europe and greater Asia regions. He is a graduate of the National Conservatory of Mexico City, the University of North Texas, and Southern Methodist University. His teachers include luminaries such as Victor Urban, Alfred Mouledous, Robert Anderson, Carlo Maria Giulini, Helmuth Rilling, and his mentor Maestro Anshel Brusilow, as well as the late Maestro Eduardo Mata. Maestro Guzmán has accorded several prestigious honors including the “Meadows” Award, DeVry University’s “Director per Excellence” Award, and “Good Citizenship Medal” in the US, Mexico’s “Outstanding National Young Artist” Award, “Golden Lyre” Award, “Artistic Silver Medal,” Austria’s Embassy, “Mozart Medal.”

Other recognitions include a 2000 listing as an “Outstanding Musicians of the 21st Century” magazine, published by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, 2012 “Man of the Year” Award by NYC’s Madison’s Who’s Who, 2012 North Texas Chapter of “For the Love of Art” Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 “Distinguished Member Award” by the international musical fraternity “Sigma Alpha Iota,” 2017 Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce “Diversity Award for Arts and Culture,” and the 2018 Distinguished Mexican Artist award by the Mexican government for distinguished musical accomplishments outside of Mexico.

True to the mission of the Concert4Kids, Peter and the Wolf introduces children to the instruments of the orchestra with a representation of each character in this dramatic story. The characters – boy, bird, duck, cat, grandfather, wolf, hunters – and their doings have been beloved by younger and older audiences since introduced by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. The ISO proudly carried on this tradition much to the delight of an engaged audience. From the classic of the past to dreams of the future and outer space, the orchestra and ballet showcase came together for a beautiful afternoon of sensory delight, emotional joy and patriotism.
