2020-2021 Guest Artist & Conductor A Louisiana native and 1972 Louisiana State University graduate, Donnie Ray Albert began his operatic career after completing his Masters of Vocal Performance degree from Southern Methodist University in 1975. His 40+ year career has taken him to some of the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls across the world. He’s had Opera performances in Tosca, Aida, Nabacco, Rigoletto, Otello, Macbeth, Otello, as well as Un Ballo in Maschera, The Flying Dutchman, Die Walkure, and Siegfried. Operatic stages have included Portland, OR; New York City Opera; Atlanta, GA; Giessen; Washington, DC; Köln; Boston, MA; Montreal; Stade de France; Vancouver; Florentine Opera; Miami, Mannheim, Sacramento, Kentucky Opera, Hamburg; Chicago Lyric; Los Angeles; Austin; Arizona; Columbus, OH; Metropolitan Opera in the Parks; Tokyo; Houston; Prague National Theater; and Covent Garden. Orchestral engagements include Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Jerusalem, London, Cleveland and New York under the collaboration of such notable conductors as John DeMain, James Conlon, Paavo Järvi, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Alexander Joel, John Fiore and Karel Mark Chichon. Mr. Albert can be heard on RCA’s Porgy And Bess (Grammy 1977 – Best Opera Recording and the Grand Prix du Disc) conducted by John DeMain; The Rise and Fall of the City Of Mahagonny (2 Grammys: 2008 Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Album) conducted by James Conlon; EMI’s Eine florentinische Tragödie, also conducted by James Conlon. Mr. Albert’s discography can be found on CD Baby, Spotify and Amazon.com. Of late, Mr. Albert’s performances included soloist in the Opera John Brown (concert at Carnegie Hall); the 4 Villians in the Tales of Hoffmann (Dresden, Germany); Germont in La Traviata (Dresden, Germany) and he appeared as the Doctor in Vanessa, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, England. Since the Fall of 2012, he has served as Senior Lecturer in Voice at the University of Texas Austin campus, Butler School of Music. In January 2021, look for Mr. Albert in the role of Larry as Joe Illick’s chamber opera Bernadette’s Cozy Book Nook premieres at the Fort Worth Opera. As the director of Choral Studies at the University of North Texas, Dr. Allen Hightower leads the master’s and doctoral programs in choral conducting and oversees a comprehensive choral program of eight ensembles. Allen serves as the conductor of the UNT A Cappella Choir and the UNT Grand Chorus which collaborates annually with the UNT Symphony Orchestra in performances of major choral-orchestral works. As a member of UNT’s Early Music faculty, he leads the vocal ensemble Vox Aquilae, an artistic partner of the UNT Baroque Orchestra. Since arriving at UNT in 2016, the A Cappella Choir has been invited to perform for both the Texas Music Educators Association and the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association. As a teacher and conductor, Dr. Hightower has visited 30 states, Asia and Europe. Prior to his appointment at UNT, Dr. Hightower held the Weston Noble Endowed Chair in Music at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he served as conductor of the renowned Nordic Choir and artistic director of Christmas at Luther. As Luther’s Director of Choral Activities, he gave leadership to a choral program that included four conductors, six choirs, and over 530 singers. Under Dr. Hightower’s direction, the Nordic Choir performed at the 2014 North Central Division of ACDA, recorded six compact discs, made annual concert tours throughout the United States and toured Europe on two occasions. Dr. Hightower served as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Sam Houston State University. During his tenure, the SHSU Chorale toured Europe, performed for the 2007 National continued on page 2

Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, the 2010 Southwestern Division of ACDA, and the 2003, 2006 and 2010 conventions of the Texas Music Educators Association. He earned his undergraduate degree in piano and music education from Sam Houston State University and went on to earn a Master’s degree in choral conducting from the Eastman School of Music, as well as a Master’s degree in orchestral conducting from Baylor University. Dr. Hightower earned his Doctorate in conducting from the University of California, Los Angeles. He pursued additional orchestral conducting studies at the University of Southern California and at the University of Houston, with additional choral conducting studies at Westminster Choir College. As a student at USC, he served as conductor of the USC Community Orchestra. Upon winning first prize in the graduate division of the American Choral Directors Association’s Conducting Competition, he served as assistant to Paul Salamunovich, conductor of the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Outside of his work in the academic setting, Dr. Hightower has served as the Artistic Director of the Houston Masterworks Chorus and Orchestra, leading an annual concert series of choral-orchestral masterworks. As a church musician, he currently serves at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas, and is a seventh generation Texan residing in McKinney with his wife, Dr. Kristin Hightower, and their two daughters, Caroline and Julianne.

Hector Guzmán Music Director and Conductor

Hector Guzmán is music director/ conductor of the Irving, Plano, San Angelo, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras in the USA. He is also “Conductor Emeritus” of the Jalisco Philharmonic in Mexico. He has also achieved an impressive reputation as an organist by winning top prizes in several national and international competitions, including the “Grand Prix de Chartres,” the world’s most prestigious organ competition. Often sought as a guest conductor, appearances have taken him around the world including throughout the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Europe and greater Asia regions. He is a graduate of the National Conservatory of Mexico City, the University of North Texas, and Southern Methodist University. His teachers include luminaries such as Victor Urban, Alfred Mouledous, Robert Anderson, Carlo Maria Giulini, Helmuth Rilling, and his mentor Maestro Anshel Brusilow, as well as the late Maestro Eduardo Mata. Maestro Guzmán has accorded several prestigious honors including the “Meadows” Award, DeVry University’s “Director per Excellence” Award, and “Good Citizenship Medal” in the US, Mexico’s “Outstanding National Young Artist” Award, “Golden Lyre” Award, “Artistic Silver Medal,” Austria’s Embassy, “Mozart Medal.”

Other recognitions include a 2000 listing as an “Outstanding Musicians of the 21st Century” magazine, published by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, 2012 “Man of the Year” Award by NYC’s Madison’s Who’s Who, 2012 North Texas Chapter of “For the Love of Art” Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 “Distinguished Member Award” by the international musical fraternity “Sigma Alpha Iota,” 2017 Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce “Diversity Award for Arts and Culture,” and the 2018 Distinguished Mexican Artist award by the Mexican government for distinguished musical accomplishments outside of Mexico.
