BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES

BLUEPRINTS FOR TOMORROW ANNUAL REPORT 2024/2025

A LETTER FROM THE INDIAN RIVER STATE COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

Each day at Indian River State College, I meet students whose stories remind me why our mission matters so profoundly. Some are the first in their families to attend college. Others are working parents balancing jobs, classes, and the needs of their families. Many arrive uncertain about their future, but all share a common determination—the desire to build a brigher tomorrow.

Because of your support, tomorrow is becoming a reality. Together, we are not only transforming individual lives but also strengthening the economic and social fabric of our region. More than 77% of Indian River State College graduates remain in our district, where they serve as teachers in our schools, nurses in our hospitals, innovators in our businesses, and more. Their success fuels workforce growth, expands opportunity, and creates resilience that benefits us all.

Education has the power to change the trajectory of a student’s life—and, in turn, the future of a community.

At Indian River State College, we see this transformation every day. With the unwavering dedication of our faculty and staff and the steadfast support of friends like you, our students’ hopes become achievements, and their potential becomes progress for us all. On behalf of the entire College community, I want to thank you for believing in our students and in the promise of education. Together, we are truly building brighter futures.

Very respectfully,

A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR

Dear Friends,

Each year, the Indian River State College Foundation is privileged to witness the life-changing power of education at work. Together, we are not just investing in students—we are building brighter futures for families, our communities, and entire generations.

This year’s Annual Report, Building Brighter Futures Blueprints for Tomorrow, reflects the essential role that your support plays in making this transformation possible. Your generosity fuels scholarships, strengthens academic programs, and creates opportunities for students who might otherwise face insurmountable barriers to achieving their dreams.

As Board Chair, I am proud of the progress we have made—but even more inspired by what lies ahead. Our Board is committed to guiding the Foundation with integrity, transparency, and vision. We continue to focus on expanding access to higher education, sustaining the Promise Program, and growing the resources that will ensure Indian River State College remains a driving force for economic mobility in our region.

On behalf of my fellow Directors, thank you for joining us on this journey. Your belief in our mission turns possibility into reality and gives students the power to chart their own course toward a brighter tomorrow. Together, we are not just keeping the promise—we are shaping the future.

With gratitude,

Chair, Indian River State College Foundation Board of Directors

CREATED TO HONOR A FRIEND, THIS SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDES $2,000 ANNUALLY TO A DIGITAL MEDIA PROGRAM STUDENTAND KEEPS HIS MEMORYALIVE. STUDENT AND MEMORY ALIVE.

In 2020, friends and family of Paul Lefavi established the Paulie Fund, a donor-supported organization dedicated to honoring Paul’s passion for creative learning and digital arts, as well as his unwavering commitment to students. Through community-driven events such as golf tournaments, pub crawls, and 5Ks, the Paulie Fund raises vital resources to sustain the Paulie Fund Foundation Endowed Scholarship at Indian River State College (IRSC)— ensuring Paul’s legacy of creativity and mentorship continues to inspire future generations.

Paul was a cherished member of the Indian River State College family for more than 20 years before his passing in 2019 due to complications from Mantle Cell Lymphoma. Throughout his 17-year career with the College, he played a pivotal role in

bringing numerous stories to life, advancing video productions, supporting online learning initiatives, and showcasing the achievements of others.

The first Paulie Fund Foundation Endowed Scholarship was awarded during the 2021–2022 academic year, totaling $500 for a student in the Digital Media Program.

Today, thanks to the generosity of the Paulie Fund and the community’s steadfast support, the scholarship has grown to provide more than $2,000 annually to deserving students at Indian River State College. Paul’s spirit endures in every student who dares to dream, create, and achieve with the support of this scholarship.

Kate Beckwith Woody, a native of Pittsburgh and Chatham University graduate with a degree in Human Service Administration, is making a meaningful impact through her generous support of Indian River State College. Known for her dedication to education and the arts, Kate’s philanthropic efforts are advancing the college’s mission and creating new opportunities for students.

Her passion for supporting cultural and educational institutions is evident in her involvement with the Women’s Committee of the Carnegie Museum of Art, where she played a key role in managing the prestigious antique show. This commitment to community enrichment is reflected in her generous contributions to educational organizations, which underscore her belief in the transformative power of learning.

Kate’s history of supporting schools is long-standing. She has been an active donor to The Ellis School and St. Edward’s School in Pittsburgh, helping to enhance programs and provide resources for future generations. Now, as a supporter of Indian River State College, Kate continues this legacy by contributing to initiatives that expand access to education and empower students to achieve their goals.

Through her philanthropy, Kate Beckwith Woody exemplifies the vital role donors play in shaping the future of education. Her generosity helps ensure that Indian River State College can continue to offer quality programs and foster a thriving academic community.

For more than 25 years, Margaret Wisniewski and her late husband, Stan, have been among the most dedicated supporters of the Indian River State College Foundation. Together, they championed initiatives that touched nearly every corner of The River—supporting the Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning, advancing innovation through the Brown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, uplifting the arts, and opening doors for students through scholarships.

Margaret’s giving has always been both visionary and deeply personal. Over the years, she has supported the College through annuities and even by donating a residence—extraordinary gifts that reflect her unwavering belief in the mission of Indian River State College and its ability to transform lives.

Her generosity did not end there. In a remarkable act of forwardlooking philanthropy, Margaret included the Indian River State College Foundation in her estate planning.

Through this planned gift, she significantly bolstered her endowment, bringing it to an impressive $300,000. This enduring fund now provides approximately $15,000 in scholarships annually— support that will continue to empower students year after year.

Margaret’s legacy is more than a testament to her generosity; it is a promise to future generations. Her thoughtful estate planning ensures that students at The River will always have access to the resources, opportunities, and encouragement they need to succeed.

Her story demonstrates the profound impact that planned giving can have—extending generosity far beyond a lifetime and creating a lasting current of opportunity for all who come after.

DESTINATION PROMISE

Fueled by your generosity, the Promise Program is reshaping the future of higher education across Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties. Supported by the Foundation, and private philanthropy of donors like you, Promise provides eligible high school graduates in our four-county district the opportunity to earn an associate degree tuition-free. The Promise Program ensures that cost is never a barrier to a college education—nor to a student’s potential.

This bold initiative reflects the Foundation’s enduring commitment to expanding access, advancing economic mobility, and strengthening our region’s workforce. With clear expectations— full-time enrollment, summer coursework, and academic performance—the program fosters persistence, accountability, and success. Promise has driven higher retention and completion rates, particularly among first-generation and under-resourced students.

INDIAN RIVER

Last year, Indian River State College faculty and staff came together in a powerful show of support through the Flying Higher employee giving campaign.

This initiative invited employees to invest in the future of Indian River State College by choosing from four meaningful areas of impact. Many gave to departmental needs, helping their own teams enhance resources, innovate, and better serve students.

Others supported the Promise Program, which continues to transform lives by providing tuition-free access to higher education for eligible students in the region.

SUCCESS STORY

TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH MEASURABLE IMPACT

Indian River State College’s commitment to student success and community impact has yielded remarkable results in the 2024-2025 academic year, demonstrating the transformative power of strategic investment in education and the critical role of Foundation support in achieving these outcomes.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND STUDENT LEARNING

Indian River State College’s dedication to educational quality is evident in its comprehensive assessment initiatives. This year, 323 courses underwent rigorous review as part of the College’s 5-year curriculum cycle, ensuring that academic standards remain current and relevant.

Two hundred and twenty-two individual artifacts from 12 diverse courses across disciplines, including chemistry, philosophy, and history, were submitted. With 117 artifacts reviewed by 16 faculty volunteers, this collaborative assessment approach exemplifies The River’s commitment to continuous improvement.

STUDENT SUPPORT AND RETENTION

Mental health services have supported 470 students, with an impressive 81% retention rate among participants, since its launch.

Student success rates tell a compelling story of educational impact. The redesigned SLS 1501 student success course reached 2,858 students, with those who completed all modules achieving a remarkable 76% success rate in fall courses, compared to just 43% for non-participants, making the implementation of this new course crucial to student success. Innovation in high-impact learning supports academic momentum and career readiness by connecting students to practical, experiential learning.

The River’s commitment to adopting high-impact learning practices, particularly active/experiential learning, was demonstrated through its outreach to 590 science students via Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs).

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND

The college’s outreach efforts demonstrated an unprecedented level of community connection, with 244 activities reaching more than 28,400 attendees—deepening awareness of academic programs, strengthening local partnerships, and reinforcing the college’s role as a trusted community anchor.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND TECHNOLOGY

Strategic investments in learning environments yielded measurable benefits.

The Student Help Desk, has supported 1,865 students with technology and academic resources. Major facility improvements, including $3 million in U.S. Department of Justice funding for the Public Safety Training Complex, enhanced training capabilities across multiple programs.

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN INITIATIVE

Since 1996, the Indian River State College Foundation has served as the lead agency for Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie Counties. To date, 1,414 scholarships have been awarded to lowincome, at-risk students throughout the four-county area.

Selecting students in the 9th grade enables Take Stock in Children to implement a multi-year model that provides early intervention to children who are often overlooked and underserved. This program model includes support services through a volunteer mentor, a college success coach, and college-readiness workshops, while mitigating financial barriers to higher education by providing college scholarships.

Upon enrollment in the Take Stock in Children program, students and their parents/guardians sign contracts agreeing that the student will remain drug- and crime-free, maintain good grades and behavior, and graduate from high school. Graduates of the Take Stock in Children program receive a Florida Prepaid Scholarship to help cover the cost of college tuition. Their Associate Degrees must be earned at Indian River State College.

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES:

9TH GRADE STUDENTS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS:

MENTORING SESSIONS:

To earn a Bachelor’s degree, they are more than welcome to earn it at Indian River State College or transfer to another Florida public college or university. By setting high expectations for their academic future, Take Stock in Children helps students prepare for success in postsecondary education.

THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR BY THE NUMBERS:

During the 2024-2025 academic year, 60 students earned college degrees across various levels of higher education, including 10 certificates, 36 associate degrees, 12 bachelor’s degrees, one master’s degree, and one PhD.

VETERANS CLAY SHOOT

The Indian River State College Foundation’s Annual Clay Shoot, held February 21, 2025, at the OK Corral Gun Club, brought together 136 participants and raised a record-breaking $153,000 in support of student veterans and military family services.

Initially planned for Veterans Day but rescheduled after Hurricane Milton, the event united community members and veterans across generations—from World War II hero Richard Rossi to Medal of Honor recipient SSG David Bellavia. Guests enjoyed a day of competition, raffles, and fellowship, with Gordon & Partners earning top team honors and Jim Anderson taking the individual high scorer award.

The funds raised will provide scholarships, career assistance, and essential support programs that transform the lives of Indian River State College’s student veterans and military families.

These services are critical to helping veterans transition successfully into civilian and academic life, offering not only financial relief but also mentorship and career-readiness opportunities.

The record-breaking success of this year’s Clay Shoot ensures the Foundation can expand its reach and deepen its impact on those who have served the nation.

With overwhelming community support, the Clay Shoot highlighted the enduring bond of brotherhood among veterans while showcasing the College’s unwavering commitment to service, education, and opportunity.

With the enthusiastic support of sponsors, participants, and community leaders, the 2025 tournament underscored the transformative power of education and the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to expanding opportunity for all.

Indian River State College plans to continue amplifying the impact of this event and mission everyyear.

THE PROMISE CUP GOLFTOURNAMENT

Indian River State College plans to continue amplifying the impact of this event and mission every year.

The Indian River State College Foundation’s 2025 Promise Cup Golf Tournament, held on May 16 at the PGA Golf Club at PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, raised an impressive

$85,000 to support the Indian River State College Promise Program.

The event brought together 120 golfers for a day of camaraderie, competition, and generosity in support of tuition-free associate degrees for local high school graduates.

The funds raised through the Promise Cup directly fuel the expansion of the Indian River State College Promise Program, which removes financial barriers for graduates across Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties.

““
“The Promise Cup represents more than just a day on the golf course,” said Annabel Robertson, Vice President of Institutional Advancement. “Every swing helps remove financial barriers to higher education for students across our four-county region.”

RIVER STUDENTS GIVE BACK

AFTER THE TORNADO STRIKE: SPANISH LAKE

In the wake of last year’s devastating tornadoes that tore through the Spanish Lakes community, students and employees from Indian River State College stepped up to support their neighbors in need.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

Indian River State College proudly welcomed over 3,000 students during its new student orientation (NSO) held on August 14th and 15th, 2025. Designed to ease the transition into college life, the two-day event kicked off at the Massey Campus before continuing at each student’s respective home campus.

Now in its third year, NSO has become a cornerstone initiative to enhance the student experience. This year’s sessions featured a wide range of engaging and informative activities, including an Alumni Panel, overviews of Academic and Student Services, Military and Veteran Services, Campus Safety and Security, Parent Sessions, a lively cookout and social, and, to conclude, “Motivational Magic”, which consisted of entertainment, as well as a series of speakers and educators.

Building on its long-standing commitment to delivering affordable, high-quality education to students throughout the Treasure Coast area, many graduates will complete their studies without incurring debt thanks to the College’s effective Promise Program.

More than 175 volunteers from Indian River State College participated in cleanup efforts, demonstrating the college’s deep commitment to service, leadership, and community resilience.

Armed with tools, gloves, and a spirit of compassion, Indian River State College volunteers worked tirelessly to clear debris, assist with minor repairs, and provide comfort to residents affected by the storm. Their efforts focused on restoring not just property, but hope—helping families salvage belongings, secure damaged homes, and begin the long road to recovery.

““The cleanup initiative was part of The River’s broader commitment to civic engagement and student leadership. By responding to real-world challenges with compassion and action, Indian River State College students continue to embody the values of service and solidarity that define the College’s dedication to education that extends beyond academics and into service-driven action.

“We are thrilled to welcome another outstanding class to Indian River State College,” said Dr. Timothy E. Moore. “This strong enrollment reflects our continued commitment to innovative, accessible education that transforms lives and strengthens our community. Through programs like Promise, we are ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent students from achieving their dreams and contributing to our community’s future.”
