Nashik . ---------------------------------------------------------------------***--------------------------------------------------------------------Abstract: This paper presents the design and fabrication of a 2.LETERATURE SURVEY double disc adjustable lapping machine intended to improve surface finishing quality and reduce manufacturing costs. Lapping, an abrasive machining process, is vital for achieving high surface accuracy and smoothness in precision components. The proposed machine addresses key limitations in traditional single-disc lapping systems by offering dual-side simultaneous lapping, thereby reducing processing time and labor dependency. The study includes machine design, material selection, construction, and performance evaluation, with a focus on cost-efficiency and practical industrial applications.

The development of surface finishing techniques has led to the advancement of specialized machines like the Adjustable Micro Lapping Machine, which provides high precision in achieving fine surface quality. Lapping is a surface finishing operation where a work piece is rubbed against a tool with an abrasive slurry between them, aiming for micro-level material removal and a high-quality finish. 1.INTRODUCTION

Research by engineering scholars shows that conventional lapping processes are time-consuming and often lack accuracy due to manual control. However, the new adjustable system allows precise control over the applied force and speed through mechanical and motor-driven systems, thereby improving repeatability and reducing human error.

In modern manufacturing, surface quality significantly affects the performance, accuracy, and appearance of machined components. Lapping is widely used for precision finishing, involving fine abrasives between a rotating lapping plate and the work piece. Traditional single-disc machines are limited by time-consuming repositioning needs for double-side finishing. This project introduces a double disc adjustable lapping machine designed to overcome these drawbacks by enhancing efficiency, reducing operator effort, and ensuring higher accuracy.

A study conducted by various researchers highlights the importance of using specific abrasives like alumina, silicon carbide, or diamond paste, depending on the hardness of the material. Moreover, it was observed that adjustable pressure mechanisms lead to uniform surface finishing, which is especially important in industries like aerospace, medical equipment, and precision tooling.

Recent innovations also focus on incorporating compact and cost-effective designs suitable for academic and small-scale industrial applications. The adjustable setup ensures adaptability across different workpieces, making the system more versatile compared to traditional fixed-type lapping machines. In conclusion, the adjustable micro lapping machine improves surface finish quality, enhances dimensional accuracy, and offers a more controlled and efficient finishing operation. The simplicity in construction, low power consumption, and flexibility make it a promising solution for fine surface processing in various engineering fields.
