Welcome Welcome back to the festival celebrating global stories and Cardiff charm. And so, just like that, the 20th edition of the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival is here. Iris returns to Cardiff from 12 to 18 October, with Iris Online continuing across the UK until 31 October. Twenty editions feel like a moment worth celebrating – but Iris has never been very good at standing still. This year we return to Cineworld Cardiff, where it all started with Chapter in 2007, bringing Iris into the heart of the city and giving more people the chance to discover the festival on the big screen. Just around the corner, our first pop-up at St David’s Dewi Sant offers a mini cinema, exhibitions, community activity and a place to meet Team Iris before the festival even begins. It’s a new front door for Iris, and everybody is welcome. The programme also looks forward. We’re introducing the Iris Prize Student Award, celebrating emerging filmmakers from across the UK and Ireland. Also look out for our University of South Wales produced Heritage Lottery-supported documentary as part of the Bafta Cymru special event to celebrate our 20th anniversary on Saturday 17 October. There are more LGBTQ+ stories on mainstream platforms than when Iris began in 2007, and that is something to celebrate. But Iris remains important because there are still authentic, surprising and sometimes difficult stories the mainstream can overlook. At Iris, you can watch stories with an audience – and meet the filmmakers who made them. I appreciate the world can feel like a dark place. Our programme cannot ignore that reality. But, in the spirit of defiance, confidence and celebration, I invite you to join us for stories that are also uplifting, funny, moving and full of life. Meet talented directors, actors and writers, discover something unexpected, party hard and experience Cardiff charm. This catalogue is the perfect start to your Iris journey. BSL interpretation is also provided during the award announcements. We’re able to offer audio description for people with sight loss for some of our feature film programmes as well as a programme of short film. And some presentations will be Relaxed screenings, where the auditorium won’t be dark, sound levels will be lower and you’ll have freedom to move around. Welcome from our Chair Once again Team Iris more than inspires. This year Iris turns 20 and that’s a significant milestone, and we would like to invite you to celebrate it with us. This will be the biggest, boldest Iris to date, if you only get to one film festival this year, then this is the one! Last year’s festival was an absolute triumph, and I’d like to thank Berwyn and the whole Iris team for delivering a festival with heart, creativity and reliance. Whether it’s navigating logistical challenges – like the sad closure of Iris’ main cinema – or supporting one another through personal trials, Team Iris never falters. Their commitment to LGBTQ+ storytelling is unwavering – and today is more vital than ever. We live in a time when LGBTQ+ communities in many parts of the world face growing hostility and erasure. Against this backdrop, Iris stands as a beacon: a place where queer voices are not only heard but celebrated. The work of Iris is not just about films—it’s about visibility, solidarity, and joy. This past year, Iris has continued to push boundaries. Our Pink Portraits series continues to go from strength to strength, this year celebrating the diverse talent at BBC Cymru Wales, to launching fresh outreach initiatives in north Wales, to bringing Iris on the Move to even more communities across the UK and beyond—every step has been a reminder of the power of film to connect and transform. Our opening night needed two venues this year! We start at St David’s Dewi Sant for the unveiling of the 2026 Pink Portraits with BBC Cymru Wales (see page 58 onwards) before we walk over to Cineworld where it all started many moons ago. Some of us still call Cineworld home and for many there will be memories of past festivals and to help you unlock those memories expect some “Adleisiau”. Llinos Lee from Heno on S4C returns to help create new memories as she guides us through a fabulous programme of shorts and an opportunity to meet the creative talents involve. The party continues in the top floor bar at Cineworld.

Weekend (2011)

Weekend Revisited: In Conversation with Andrew Haigh Join director Andrew Haigh for a retrospective conversation on his breakthrough film Weekend, part of the Iris Prize selection in 2011 and still regarded as one of the most influential and tender depictions of queer love on screen. Haigh reflects on making the film fifteen years on, its lasting impact on LGBTQ+ cinema, and how it shaped the path of his career, from 45 Years and Looking to All of Us Strangers. Andrew Haigh is an award-winning British writer-director whose critically acclaimed 2023 film All of Us Strangers received six BAFTA nominations, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Haigh. After his breakout debut with Weekend (2011), Haigh went on to produce the groundbreaking HBO series Looking, directing ten of its episodes. He also directed the award-winning 2021 limited series The North Water for BBC and AMC. Haigh's upcoming psychological drama A Long Winter is set to debut at the New York Film Festival.

Labrador - Autopsy of Silence Dir: Rodrigue Jean | Canada | 120 mins As a cargo ship sails through a storm off the coast of Basse-Côte-Nord, a cook is found murdered on board. From the perspective of Alupa Tulugak, an Inuk mechanic and friend of the victim, this story reconstructs the events as a thriller.

In 1989, Rodrigue Jean directed his first short film, La Déroute, followed by the documentary La Voix des rivières and the short film La Mémoire de l’eau. Two popular and critically acclaimed dramatic feature films came soon after: Full Blast in 1999 and Yellowknife in 2001. Next came the documentaries Living on the Edge in 2006 and Men for Sale in 2007. Lost Song, his third feature film, won the Best Canadian Feature Film Award at TIFF in 2008. He then spent several years directing documentaries with the film collective Groupe Épopée. In 2014, Love in the Time of Civil War also premiered at TIFF. In 2020, he directed The Acrobat, his fifth feature film. In 2022, he co-directed 2012/Through the Heart, marking the tenth anniversary of the major 2012 student strike in Quebec. 12 12

Little Tragedies

In 2011, Daniel Nolasco left his small hometown of Catalão for Rio de Janeiro to study. He was the first of his queer friends to go. Ten years later, none of them live there anymore — some have died, and the rest have moved away.

Daniel Nolasco born in Catalão, Brazil, the director studied film and audiovisual media at the Universidade Federal Fluminense and history at the Universidade Federal de Goiás. After making several short films, he directed his first feature-length documentary Paulistas which premiered at DOK Leipzig. Dry Wind (2020), his first fiction feature film, made its debut at the Panorama Section at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival and later screened at Iris. His feature Only Good Things also screened at Iris in 2025. 16 16

Gabriel Ordóñez is a Mexican-Venezuelan filmmaker exploring queer autofiction. He directed the short films Pangea and Trips, Friends, Night and Destiny, and the feature Un novio para el domingo (2026). A 2025 Sony LATAM PITCH emerging writer and FICIMAD Best Supporting Actor winner, he is currently developing his second film.

Adios Amor

Indra studied filmmaking and scriptwriting at the National School of Cinematographic Arts of UNAM. Her short films have been acclaimed at various international film festivals, with Pinky Promise standing out as it won the award for Best Short Film at FICM 2020 and was presented at the Cannes Critics' Week. She is a recipient of the Young Creators grant from FONCA in the category of Screenwriting. She works as a screenwriter and/or director for television series for Amazon and Netflix. Her debut feature film Adiós, Amor, winner of the 14th UNAM-FOPROCINE First Feature Film Contest, is about to embark on its festival circuit. 24 24

Paloma Schneideman is a New Zealand filmmaker, screenwriter and musician based in Auckland. Also known as electronic/hip hop artist PollyHill, she first gained recognition directing music videos before moving further into narrative filmmaking with shorts including Mine, Memory Foam and Gate Crash. Her debut feature Big Girls Don’t Cry was developed through Jane Campion’s A Wave in the Ocean mentorship programme and reflects Schneideman’s interest in queer adolescence, shame, desire and the messy uncertainty of growing up.

Whisperings of the Moon

Lai Yuqing, she/they, originally from Fujian, was born in Tianjin, China. She studied abroad in New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto. Working as a director, actor, and musician, she participated in the production of multiple short and feature films. Her directorial feature debut, Whisperings of the Moon, had the world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival 2025. This lesbian love story explores themes of love and separation. Her work has also been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival, BFI Flare, Tokyo Talents Shortlist and as a Sundance Ignite finalist, among others. Lai Yuqing died at the end of 2025.

Film and TV director and screenwriter, Margherita Ferri studied at UCLA and Centro Sperimentale, National School of Cinema, Rome. In 2017/18 she took part in the Biennale College Cinema program. Her first feature film, Zen - in the ice rift has been produced by the Biennale di Venezia and Articolture. It premiered at 75° Mostra del Cinema di Venezia in 2018 then screened at many international film festivals winning a special mention for best debut at Frameline Film Festival. She was nominated as Best Emerging Director at Nastri D'argento 2019. Then, she directed two episodes of the Netflix Original Series ZERO (2021) and two episodes of the Amazon Prime Video original series Bang Bang Baby (2022). As a screenwriter, she wrote the thriller-horror feature film The Nest, directed by Roberto De Feo, produced by Colorado Film and distributed by Vision and Universal. The films in Best of Iris reflect the breadth of contemporary LGBTQ+ storytelling: bold new voices, memorable characters and experiences that cross borders while remaining deeply personal. Rhys Marc Jones is a Welsh-Irish filmmaker who received his MFA in writing and directing from NYU Tisch School of the Arts as a threetime BAFTA Scholarship recipient. His debut feature film Black Church Bay (BBC Film, Screen Scotland, Film Cymru Wales, Vertigo Releasing) received support from the iFeatures scheme and the Festival de Cannes Cinéfondation Résidence. His screenplay for Black Church Bay won the Black Family Feature Prize, the highest accolade bestowed by the faculty at NYU Film Department - and his three student shorts played festivals worldwide, receiving various awards and recognitions including three BAFTA Cymru nominations and a BIFA longlist. His short Father of the Bride was selected in competition at SXSW 2020 before streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the US and being broadcast on the BBC in the UK. Rhys received BFI Flare x BAFTA Crew Mentorship from Wash Westmoreland, a scheme that rewards and supports filmmakers advancing LGBTQ+ representation - and in 2021, he was selected for Berlinale Talents and the Torino ScriptLab. 51 51

Co-Op Audience Award & Online The Co-op Audience Award puts the decision in your hands of the people who watch the films. Every short film screening in competition at Iris is eligible, and audiences can vote whether they join us in Cardiff or watch online. After watching a film, audience members will be invited to rate it between 1 and 5 online. Votes from both the in-person and online audiences will be combined, giving everyone the same opportunity to support their favourite. It is a chance to champion the story that moved, surprised or stayed with you long after the credits rolled. Each vote helps celebrate the filmmakers whose work has made the strongest connection with audiences. Once voting has closed, the scores will be counted and the short film with the strongest audience response will receive the Co-op Audience Award. Iris @ St Davids Dewi Sant The Iris pop-up at St David’s Dewi Sant is a welcoming, public-facing space created to bring the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival into the everyday life of Cardiff city centre. Open in the run-up to our 20th festival, it gives shoppers, residents and visitors an easy way to discover Iris—whether they already know the festival or are encountering it for the first time. The space serves several purposes. Our popup cinema screens short films from the Iris archive, community projects and work made with Iris, offering a flavour of the stories and filmmaking celebrated by the festival. It is also an information point where visitors can meet members of the Iris team, ask questions, explore the October programme and get practical help with tickets, access and taking part. As an exhibition space, the pop-up showcases visual art and photography connected with Iris, including Pink Portraits Revisited and a specially created world map marking the filmmakers and guests travelling to Cardiff. Together, the films and exhibitions celebrate two decades of global LGBTQ+ storytelling and Cardiff’s place at the heart of Iris. Community engagement is central to the project. The space will host talks, workshops, meet-the-team sessions, partner events and other activities developed with Cardiff’s LGBTQ+ communities, cultural organisations, local businesses and sports groups. By providing a free and informal place to meet, watch, talk and learn, the popup aims to make Iris more visible, accessible and welcoming, and to help new audiences feel confident about joining the festival. We are extremely grateful to Landsec and to the management team at St David’s Dewi Sant for their generous support in providing the space and helping us make this ambitious project possible.
