Gold for North Cork Creameries Farmer owned co-operative wins Best Overall Duhallow Business Award
The IRD Duhallow Business Awards took place on Thursday, 23rd November at the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket, Co. Cork. There were six category winners and one overall winner, with North Cork Creameries being awarded the Business of the Year. The annual affair has become a staple in Duhallow’s social scene, drawing in a sizeable crowd of over two hundred. The attendees, a
mix of esteemed business figures, community representatives, and notable figures made it clear that this was the event to be seen at. Motivational Speaker, Comedian and MC Alan Shortt hosted the awards, which celebrate the abundance of remarkable business achievements in the area and offer valuable networking opportunities for local companies. ■ Cont’d on page 13

IRD Duhallow welcomed a massive crowd to the marquee. Alan Shortt proved an excellent master of ceremonies, he got the crowd amped up for a wonderful time. A very unique game of heads or tails was played, a delicious meal from DCFS was had, and finally, the winners were announced. Everyone involved played a blinder. Duhallow Choral Society Light Up Oireachtas
Duhallow Choral Society are proud to announce that we have been chosen to perform at the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Houses of the Oireachtas on the 7th of December 2023. We have been invited by the office of the Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl with the kind support of Deputy Michael Moynihan. There will be approximately 70 members of the choir in attendance on the day and this will be one of the significant events of our year. Duhallow Choral Society are also thrilled to share the exciting news that we will be appearing in an upcoming episode of Nationwide. We had the pleasure of being interviewed recently by Zainab Boladale from RTE. This episode
will be streamed in the near future, we are hoping to share the date with you prior to the screening so you can tune in to catch the show. 2024 is promising to be an exciting year ahead starting with St. Patricks Day mass in Kanturk, a concert with a string orchestra on Easter Week, a concert with a Brazilian celloist player to support Kanturk hospital on May 7th, and we’ve received a special invitation by the diocese of Cloyne to perform at Knock Basilica on May 12th. We start back on the 09th of January 2024, and we very much welcome new members to train for our new season of music in Spring 2024. We are particularly looking for male voices.

Banteer Wins Pride of Place
In its 21st consecutive year, the Pride of Place Competition acknowledges the work being done every day by communities all over Ireland. At the Awards in Armagh, Banteer Community Groups won the All Island Pride of Place award for the Community Wellbeing (Holistic) section. Judging took place on Tuesday 1st of August with the community showcasing the various community projects developed with a video presentation, tour and Q&A sessions. County Mayor Frank O Flynn and Councillors Bernard Moynihan, Ian Doyle and John Paul O Shea attended the event as well as Maura Walsh IRD Manager to support the local community. The award is the culmination of years of hard work by local voluntary groups, working closely with various partners including IRD Duhallow, Cork County Council, local TDs and public representatives, various Government Departments, local businesses and the local community. Boherbue Comprehensive School students are gearing up for another spectacular traditional music event. Serving as the master of ceremonies for the evening will be the acclaimed singer/songwriter Anne-Marie O’Riordan, who hails from Rathcoole. Buttevant native, award-winning, multi-instrumentalist Alan Finn has been working with the students since September and has produced a top-level concert. Alan is unique in his vast contribution to the traditional music industry as a combined musician, teacher, adjudicator and mentor. He is highly proficient on button accordion, fiddle and viola to name but a few. Our students have flourished under his expert tuition and he has enhanced their repertoire greatly over the past three months. Boherbue Comprehensive School’s students have established a noteworthy presence in the
traditional music arena over the past 6 years. This includes Timmy Keane showcasing the mouth organ, and Donnacha Lehane, Luke Lehane, Kevin McAuliffe, and Darragh Moynihan in their final school concert before leaving cert. And we can’t forget the world championship dancers among the group. Their impressive resume includes collaborations alongside local Sliabh Luachra musicians. Numerous students have secured Fleadh Ceoil and Scór medals, both individually and as part of groups, demonstrating their dedication to the tradition. The audience will be privileged to enjoy four specially commissioned compositions in celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary. These pieces have been crafted by Muireann O’Connor (Flute and uilleann pipes), Ciara Murphy (fiddle), Timmy Keane (banjo), and Anne-Marie O’Keeffe (piano). The school choir, conducted by teacher Marie Holey, is set to

A Day Focused on Heart Health and Stroke Prevention in Our Community

Rural Community Health Worker, IRD Duhallow On 20 November 2023, our community came together to participate in the Rural Community Health Project’s “Happy Heart, Healthy Lives” event; the half-day talk focused on two critical topics heart health and stroke prevention, which are essential for everyone. It was an excellent opportunity for the community to come together and learn about crucial aspects of healthy living. The event featured several health experts. Pádraig Denn, a Cardiology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) from the HSE Integrated Care Chronic Disease Hub, based at the Mallow Primary Healthcare Centre, brought his extensive expertise in cardiology to the forefront. His presentation shed light on the latest advancements in cardiology, emphasizing the importance of regular check-ups and innovative treatment methods for heart diseases, particularly in rural settings. Dr Mary J. Foley, a Programme and Clinical Advisor with the Cork Stroke Society, enlightened attendees on stroke support, a critical aspect often overlooked in rural healthcare discussions.

She provided valuable insights on stroke prevention, including lifestyle changes and early warning signs, drawing from her extensive experience with the Cork Stroke Society. Avril Hallihan, a Senior Physiotherapist specializing in Cardiology Integrated Care with the HSE, Cork North Hub, captivated the audience with her discussion on the importance of daily activity for maintaining heart health. Avril’s particularly wellreceived session highlighted the benefits of incorporating regular physical activity into their daily routines and its crucial role in preventing cardiac issues. Tim Burke, a Community Sports Development Officer with Cork Sports Partnership, spoke engagingly about staying active and involved in community sports for overall heart health. He showcased various local sports initiatives that encourage an active lifestyle, engaging the audience with his talk on the role
of community sports in promoting heart health. The talks ranged from in-depth discussions on maintaining heart health to practical exercises beneficial for the heart. There was much positive feedback with one attendee highly praising the event, stating, “Thank you for a truly informative morning, particularly Avril on exercise and its importance.” A highlight of the event was the Irish Heart Foundation’s Mobile Unit, where people could get their blood pressure checked on the spot, allowing immediate application of the learnings from the event. This event was an overall success, sparking a conversation within the community about the importance of heart health. Attendees left with a newfound awareness and enthusiasm to incorporate what they learned into their daily lives. The success of the Rural Community Health Project sets the stage for future initiatives and health education in our community. We’re looking forward to more events and programmes that will keep building on our strong established foundation.

Taking Care of Yourself During Times of Trouble By ALICE O’BRIEN
Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket We are living in a lot of contradiction at the moment. Our everyday life is full of the normal routine, mixed with a sprinkle for excitement of up-coming festive cheer and a few funny moments with the people we love. On the other hand, we turn on the news or read the paper and we are flooded with horrifying images from Gaza and Palestine. Images of suffering, of beautiful innocent lost children, of homes destroyed and displaced people. It is very normal for us to be affected by all of this- to experience headline anxiety and then guilt if we choose to turn it off.
There are some things you can do to lessen the sense of doom that is part of this on-going crisis: • It might seem obvious but try to limit the amount of time spent on social media. With various technologies, it is very easy for very emotive images to be sent across the world in a matter of seconds. Where we had to imagine these horrific things years ago; nothing is left to the imagination now. So, take care. Watch news from reputable sources and limit your daily intake. • It is not selfish to prioritise your own wellbeing. If you find it triggering to talk about these atrocities then cut the conversations, change the subject. You do not have to feel

guilty for looking after your own self-care. Movement is a great tool against anxiety. If you are feeling stressed or worried get out for a walk, even a ten minute walk can change your emotional state. Getting out in nature is even better- so head to the Island Wood. Try mindful breathing. Take a long slow breath. Stop and ground yourself. We are safe here in our side of the world, even though it is hard to think of such huge suffering elsewhere.
So, remember, as events unfold in the world, we have a duty to look after ourselves and look after what happens within our own homes- we are even allowed to enjoy life.
Understanding And Navigating Seasonal Affective Disorder

Rural Community Health Worker, IRD Duhallow As the leaves start to turn and the days grow shorter, a significant number of people begin to feel the onset of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked closely to the change in seasons. Often kicking in during the fall and stretching through the cold grip of winter, SAD typically recedes with the arrival of spring and the warmth of summer. Dubbed informally as “winter blues,” this condition goes far beyond mere seasonal funk, affecting mood, sapping energy, and hampering everyday functioning. The precise causes of SAD remain a subject of research but include a mix of factors. These range from imbalances in serotonin, a neurotransmitter that influences mood, to the overproduction of melatonin impacting sleep and mood. Reduced sunlight during winter months can disrupt internal biological clocks or circadian

rhythms, adversely affecting sleep patterns and overall mood. Additionally, a vitamin D deficiency, stemming from reduced sunlight exposure, might worsen existing mood disorders. Those grappling with SAD often face symptoms strikingly like major depression, marked by a persistent low mood, an aversion to activities once found enjoyable, and shifts in appetite or weight. Sleep is often disrupted; some feel agitated or unusually lethargic, and there’s a noticeable drop in energy levels. This troubling mix includes feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, concentration difficulties, and disturbingly, frequent thoughts of death or suicide. The manifestation of SAD can vary depending on the time of year. In its winter-pattern, it’s common to experience oversleeping, overeating, weight gain, and a desire to withdraw socially or “hibernate.” Conversely, summerpattern SAD typically involves sleep troubles like insomnia, a poor appetite leading to weight loss, restlessness, agitation, anxiety, and

even episodes of violent behaviour. Given the complexities and variations in SAD symptoms and responses to treatment, a personalised approach, discussed with your GP, remains the most prudent path for those seeking relief from the oppressive shadows of this seasonal affliction. Advent - A Time of Joyful Anticipation

The Advent season is a four week period before Christmas that celebrates with anticipation the coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. It is a time when we can reflect on how we can prepare our hearts and homes for Christ’s birth. It is a time for our communities and families to remember, through prayer, reflections, music, and good deeds what the true meaning of the birth of Jesus is all about. The Advent season invites us to step away from what can be a frenzied time of shopping and parties and instead focus on how we should commemorate the birth of Jesus, one of the holiest times in our Catholic faith. The Advent Wreath The evergreen wreath and candles are full of symbolism associated with the Christmas season. The wreath itself, which is made of various evergreens, signifies continuous life. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolises the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the eternal life we find in Christ. The individual evergreens that make up the wreath have their own meaning that can be adopted to our faith. The laurel signifies victory over persecution and suffering. The pine, holly and yew signify immortality and cedar signifies strength and healing. The pine cones that decorate the wreath symbolize life and resurrection. The wreath, as a whole, is meant to remind us of both the immortality of our souls and God’s promise of everlasting life to us through Christ.

It called the “Candle of the Shepherds” and is pink because rose is a liturgical colour for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus. The fourth, the final purple candle, is lit on the fourth week to mark the final week of prayer and penance as we wait for the birth of our Saviour. This “Candle of the Angels”, symbolizes Peace. It reminds us of the message of the angels; “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.” The last candle, white, is placed in the middle and is lit on Christmas Eve. This candle is called the “Christ Candle” and represents the Life of Christ. The colour white is for purity because Christ is our sinless, pure Saviour.
Our Holy Mass readings during Advent have three distinct themes. 1. The second coming of Jesus when He will come again into our world and establish His kingdom on earth, a kingdom of joy, peace and love. 2. Preparation for our death and our meeting with Jesus. It reminds us to be ready when that day comes as we do not know the day or the hour. 3. Our preparation to welcome Jesus into our world and into our hearts -- born as a little baby in a stable at Bethlehem.

With the rise of online shopping, cybercrime and customer fraud have become the most prevalent type of fraud in Ireland. Irish people have lost over €1.1m online shopping fraud in 2020. Scams can range from phishing attempts to counterfeit websites designed to steal personal information. Be aware of possible scams to help you to protect yourself. Think before you click, don’t rush any transactions without checking things properly first. Stay safe online using a few of these tips. When shopping or making a payment online at any time, make sure that: • The web address begins with ‘https’, displays an encryption certificate (a padlock or unbroken key symbol) and uses

a verified payment processing provider. You don’t do your shopping on public Wi-Fi networks or hotspots where your details are vulnerable. The website is a legitimate representation of the brand, and not a mirror or lookalike site; brand names are misspelled, and prices that are too low for the mispresented site. Your computer/tablet/ smartphone has the latest antivirus.
For many customers, a fear when shopping online is to have their card details stolen. Disposable cards provide users with a temporary, randomly generated card number, CVV, and expiration date to be used for a single transaction. Once the transaction is completed, the virtual card is automatically deleted, reducing the risk of unauthorised transactions, and safeguarding personal and financial information.
Be careful with links in emails and texts; links can lead to fake websites where you may be asked to share personal banking details, including activation codes. Never share banking details, including full online banking PIN, or other personal information.
If you think you have been victim of a scam: • Stop all contact with the scammer straight away • Do not send any more payments • If you paid by credit or debit card, tell your bank or card provider immediately • Report the incident to your local Garda station, as it is a criminal matter • Gather any records you have about the scam (such as emails or other communications) • Protect your devices by resetting your passwords and update your anti-virus software • Report the incident to consumer protection agencies.

You’re over the first hurdle and you’ve made it to the interview phase, now what? I’ve seen many excellent candidates sell themselves short at the final hurdle just because they didn’t put the extra effort into their interview outfit. Here’s a few simple to tips to help you get over the line. The week before your interview pick out what you are going to wear. Check that it still fits. Make sure there are no stains. Dry clean or wash the items and make sure that they are pressed or ironed. Polish shoes. Men get a bad rap when it comes to fashion but the average gentleman’s sartorial knowledge
has improved a lot over the years, but some cardinal sins still exist. Buying expensive suits is not a remedy for something that fits poorly. If something is too big ask yourself if you can go a size smaller or look at getting it tailored. Equally, if you are of a stockier build explore looser fitting options instead of slim fitting shirts and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the results. If the sleeves are overlong take them to a tailor. The night before your interview lay out your suit. If you’ve bought a new shirt remove it from the packet and take out all of the pins (it will save you three minutes in the morning when you are rushing). Iron it. Layout shirts & ties and match them. A favourite solution I’ve come across for clients who are colour blind is to have a number system
