IRD Duhallow welcomed guests and speakers to the ‘Business Breakfast Event’ which took place on Tuesday morning the 29th of March at the James O’Keeffe Institute. The speakers on this morning included Claire O’Leary – Munster Fire and Safety, Jenny Rose Clarke – Toons Bridge

Dairy, and Michéal Sheridan – Irish Community Air Ambulance. Enterprise panelists spoke about their businesses. IRD Duhallow were also delighted to be joined by Cork County Mayor, Cllr Gillian Coughlan. This was her first visit to both the James O’Keeffe Institute and Newmarket town.

Inside, you will find an eight page pullout giving details in order to help those who need it. Easter is nearly upon us as of this publication so we have an Easter blessing from Fr. Toby Bluth. We have a feature on the recent Bealtaine Festival launch (the reason for such an early date is provided), and a colouring competion in our Kids Page. Plus much more! Community News KISKEAM G.A.A. CLUB HISTORY As it is hoped to publish the history of our Club in the coming months, the Club is appealing to anyone that would have photos (old and new), newspaper cuttings, or any relevant information to make them available to us. The month of April only, will be set aside for collection of this material. Extensive research has already been carried out, but to avoid disappointment afterwards when it’s too late, if anyone has any information/photos, now is the time to have them included. The book will cover the history of our Club from its formation in 1945 up to 2020. All material handed in will be returned in the same condition as it was received, once it is processed. TUREENCAHILL COMMUNITY GROUP was formed in 2014, and because of the joint efforts of the local community and the voluntary committee we have operated a successful centre by running a variety of classes, social events and providing a digital hub within our community. We are asking you to help us plan ahead for the coming years in our centre. You are best placed to tell us what we need to do in order to sustain and develop our community centre, therefore we will issue a survey in the coming weeks to the community & stakeholders. This will be posted on our social media platforms. Once the survey is completed, we will then collate the feedback. We really look forward to hearing what people have to say with regards planning the next stages of our development here in Tureencahill Community Centre.

Banteer Community Sportsfield Launch Draw 2022

The annual fundraising draw for 2022 was launched recently with €10,000 in prizes for 2022 and all users are asked to support same. Prizes of €1500, €500, and 5 by €100 will be raffled every 3 months with the cost of tickets at €25 per quarter or €100 per annum. This draw is an integral part of the funding to cover the maintenance and development cost each year for the facility. The second phase of the major €1.85M project to build a regulation sized astroturf pitch for all sports plus a new community building with new changing rooms, toilets, disabled facilities, spectator stand area, museum, digital hub, and café facility is near completion at the famous Banteer Sportsfield. With IRD Duhallow as the lead applicant a major grant of €1.2M was approved in Feb 2019 towards the development project from the Government’s Rural Regeneration and Development fund, Project Ireland 2040 under the Department of Community and Rural Development. A Sports capital grant was also approved along with Leader grants for the inclusion of a renewable energy system, car park, and digital hub in the new building. However, the local community are raising over €400,000 of matching funds to complete the full project. This fundraising work is well under way since 2018 and on target with sponsorship from local companies and individuals and the annual €100 ticket draws. The 2022 first draw takes place in May this year. A bank loan is in place in the meantime. The new spectator stand is now opened. The first phase of the astroturf pitch project started construction in mid-June 2019 with Kelly Brothers Ballydesmond as the main contractors and McSherry Electrical Mallow as the lighting

sub-contractors and the new pitch is finished and operational now. The demand for the astro pitch facility is such that the facility is in use 7 days a week with for example 11 games in total played there recently over Sat /Sun including camogie, soccer, hurling, ladies’ football, and the Duhallow U21 football championship. The Cork Senior camogie team also use it as their training location under the guidance of Coach Davy Fitzgerald and Manager Matthew Twomey. These past few weeks has seen the venue also host 3 Munster Schools finals. The new building will also include a museum /exhibition area for Banteer sports memorabilia and will attract people to the area interested in viewing old newspaper articles, photos and videos outlining the historic achievements of 100 years of the famous Banteer Sports and preserving it for future generations. Already a 100-year record of the famous Banteer Sports and the National and International sportsmen that competed and went on to Olympic Games, has been recorded by Jerry Sheehan, founder of Avonmore Electrical and also co-founder of IRD Duhallow, and was a former Secretary of Banteer Sports. The inclusion of a digital hub at the facility will also add another much-needed service to the area allowing people to work from home remotely. The hard working Banteer Community Sportsfield group officers/members and the support received from the local community, all local user clubs, neighbours, businesses, Schools, TDs, Councillors, all fundraisers/ ticket sellers, Maura Walsh Manager IRD and the staff of IRD Duhallow has made this major project for Banteer possible in these difficult

times. This project will provide a facility for all the Duhallow, Cork County, Kerry and Limerick areas, providing facilities for many future generations and giving all families a better quality of life. This development will also complement the existing community facilities - costing over €6M - which have been developed in the Banteer area including the park area, loop-walk around the Pond Field, Children’s Playground, Glen Theatre, Multipurpose Community Centre with indoor Astro-turf/Gym. The existing developments and the new project together with the hugely successful Banteer Community Childcare Centre, that supports so many families, and employs almost 40 people shows a community resilience that ensures sustainable local development for the Banteer region. The funding from Rural Regeneration Project Ireland 2040, Leader and Sports capital funding and the major local fundraising, has made this project possible, and all monies are being spent in the local region, supporting local jobs, at a time when local businesses need all our support. The group also welcome a recent Sports capital funding of €80,000 towards extension of the existing walks at the facility.

Community News Banteer Lyre and Districts Community Council have made representation to Cork County Council engineer Andreana Sheehan to resolve the frequent flooding of the road which occurs near the railway entrance, it appears the drain gulley at the exit of the train station is blocked. As locals know each time we now get heavy rain, this road floods and presents significant safety concerns to road users. Also resurfacing of the road from the village square to the railway crossing has been requested as this is badly needed due to the very poor road condition and drainage is also needed on the west side beyond the railway entrance gate as water always lodges in this area of the road.

Pole Pals We are a Transition year mini company from Boherbue Comprehensive School called Pole Pals. We have designed a pole carrying device that carries pigtail poles when strip grazing. They are available in Boherbue Co-Op, Kerry Agri Store Newmarket, North Cork Co-Op Newmarket and Farm Relief Services in Kanturk. Prep For Med

Pictured here is Leah Hennessy, one of our TY students, who participated in UCC’s “Prep for Med” virtual event. The event is aimed towards students who are interested in the world of medicine. There were many wonderful highlights during the event, including talks from CUH surgeons in a variety of specialities and a fascinating interview with Assistant State Pathologist Dr. Margot Bolster.

Online Chess Competition

Pictured here are three members of our successful Chess Club team who recently competed in a national online chess competition. In the novice section Nataniel Tadrzynski (2nd year) came in an impressive 7th out of a field of 125 competitors. In the challenger section, Paul O’Sullivan (5th year) and Oisín Park (2nd year) came in 21st and 27th respectively out of a field of 150 players. The SMKnights school team came in sixth place overall. The prize money for the entire Chess tournament has been donated to the Irish Red Cross to aid the people of Ukraine.

IRD Duhallow Hosts Business Breakfast Event By MONICA GILMORE

The sun shone brightly as IRD Duhallow CEO Maura Walsh welcomed guests and speakers to the Business Breakfast Event which took place on Tuesday morning the 29th of March at the James O’Keeffe Institute. Maura had the pleasure of welcoming the first guest speaker back to IRD as Cork Chamber President Paula Cogan began her career as tourism officer with IRD Duhallow. Paula spoke about the importance of talent development and the supports on offer from Skillnet in this regard. She talked about networking, taking time each week to meet fellow business people to collaborate and also of the work being done by Cork Chamber. Paula then joined the panel of speakers which included Claire O’Leary – Munster Fire and Safety, Jenny Rose Clarke – Toons Bridge Dairy and Michéal Sheridan – Irish Community Air Ambulance. Enterprise working group chairman Padraic O’Connell assisted by cochair Geraldine O’Leary opened the panel discussion where

the panelists spoke about their businesses, the challenges they have faced and everybody got some great tips on how to move forward and innovate in business. Michéal told attendees about the fantastic work that the community air ambulance is doing, the services and challenges of fundraising. He spoke about the importance of networking and the benefits of meeting fellow business people at events such as the business breakfast. We had the pleasure of welcoming Cork County Mayor Cllr Gillian Coughlan for her first visit to IRD Duhallow and Newmarket

and facilitating a tour of the James O’Keeffe Institute for her. Everybody enjoyed the delicious breakfast provided by manager Linda O’Connor and the team in Duhallow Community Food Services. IRD Duhallow Dawn Mass The celebration of new beginnings

By STEPHANIE MOYNIHAN For the launch of the Duhallow Bealtaine Festival, IRD Duhallow, alongside the Duhallow SAOI network, were delighted to celebrate the annual Dawn Mass at the Source of the Blackwater on the 23rd of March 2022. Blessed with wonderfully mild and sunny

weather, a very special and wonderful morning was enjoyed by all. Mass was celebrated by Father Tarrant of Ballydesmond was accompanied by a delightful musical performance by Anne Marie Lehane and her son Luke. The location of the Source of Blackwater symbolises the start of new life and deep appreciation

and love for nature, which Father Tarrant so fittingly emphasised during the celebration of mass. Afterwards, delicious treats were served by Duhallow Community Food Services. This Dawn Mass had to be held at this earlier time, rather than its usual date in May, due to the breeding of protected species and licenses.

Blessed Fr. Maurice McKenraghty Father Maurice McKenraghty was born in Kilmallock. He became a priest and worked for many years there. He later became chaplain to Gerald, the 14th Earl of Desmond and when the latter rebelled, Maurice accompanied his army. In 1583 he was captured by Lord Roche at a site just a few metres from the Source of the Blackwater on foot of information of Murtagh Sweeney, an officer who had deserted Desmond. He was sent to Clonmel Jail where he remained for over a year. Whilst there, a prominent Clonmel citizen Victor White bribed a jailor to release Fr. McKenraghty on Easter Saturday to say mass for the people of Clonmel. The Jailor however, betrayed White and told the governor of the service

being conducted in White’s house. Father Enright had heard confessions of the faithful and was preparing for Mass when the soldiers raided the house. He escaped by hiding under straw in the countryard, but the chalice and sacred vestments were found. White was arrested and threatened

with death if he didn’t tell where the priest was hiding. He refused to betray Fr. McKenraghty, but when the latter heard of White’s danger, he gave himself up and was immediately imprisoned. He was offered his freedom if he renounced his Faith, but, he refused, and was condemned to death as a traitor to the Queen. The site of Fr. McKenraghty’s grave remained secret for almost 100 years in fear that it would be descreated by English soldiers. In 1647, when the Catholic party returned to power, Father McKenraghty’s body was exhumed and reburied with great ceremony and religious honours in the Franciscan Abbey at Askeaton. Fr. McKenraghty was beatified in 1992.

Easter is that time of year that we all look forward to so much. As well as the longer days and the expected better weather, it’s a time that fills us with hope and optimism. It’s a time for being happy and full of Easter joy. Apart from the Easter eggs, there are lots of things that help to keep us happy. This particular year, 2022, is a time of special rejoicing. It’s the first time in three years that we can be back in our churches again to celebrate this most important feast. Sure, we still need to be careful and cautious but, thanks to vaccines and self-responsibility and the care that we got from medical professionals and others, our

gatherings together, while not quite the normal of before, are definitely heading in that direction. The Christian faith is always expressed in community. It is when we gather together that we tell the great story of salvation. We hear and we listen to God’s nurturing and care for his people. We listen to the great story of the Exodus, we rejoice in the hope of the Prophets and we tell ourselves again the Easter story of Jesus’s death and especially his Resurrection. We had look forward to being back again sharing our faith with one another and be happy in our hope. We felt that when the Covid crisis had passed the world would be a better place a place where we could live our lives in fulfilment and peace. We could not have imagined the horrors of war that were waiting in the wings to play out before us. Emerging from one crisis, we found ourselves

confronting another. The sadness of death and displacement were unfolding before our eyes. It seemed like Good Friday had come again for the whole world and especially for those in Ukraine, millions of whom were asked to walk through the valley of darkness. We share with Pope Francs in condemning the “senseless massacre” in the besieged Ukraine. The Christian message is one of peace and will always be so. This Easter it seems we need to pray all the more earnestly that peace may descend upon our world so that we can all live in harmony together. My wish for you this Easter is for peace in your own hearts and in the hearts of all people. Never was it more urgent to pray for this peace. Despite all the darkness in our troubled world I wish that you and all of yours will have a Happy Easter. -Fr Toby.

Duhallow Ukrainian Response ABOUT

IRD Duhallow has been tasked by the Department of Rural and Community Development to co-ordinate activities focused on supporting new arrivals from Ukraine into Duhallow. As the local development company for the region, we are very willingly supporting those already here and preparing for those arriving in the coming weeks ahead. Staff have been deployed to help coordinate this. We are already working closely with other agencies on the ground to help make this transition possible for all Ukrainians coming here. In time of this unprecedented humanitarian crisis, we recognise the importance of keeping bureaucracy to a minimum and helping the Ukrainian community to access supports and services as quickly and easily as possible. We are currently working closely with local schools, child cares, GP practices to establish their capacity for new students and patients. Community groups are already actively engaged and eager to support where they can. In the last week alone, new families have been welcomed into primary and secondary schools in Duhallow with such schools showing great empathy and willingness to help them settle in as quickly as possible. We must also acknowledge that with more families coming into the area, this will also help to support those schools who may have been in jeopardy of closing due to low numbers. We are working closely with Breda O’Keeffe and her team in St Vincent de Paul Kanturk to coordinate what items we will need donated in the region. Conscious that many people have already donated so much to collections taken over to the Ukraine, we can guarantee that this time all items will be going straight to Ukrainians in Duhallow. Accommodation of course in rural areas especially will be key, and again we are calling on local employers to help source accommodation locally to make filling these vacancies possible. Duhallow communities have always shown great passion and commitment to helping those less fortunate and now more than ever, we know communities will welcome Ukrainians into Duhallow. We will act as an information point for host families and provide information on rights and entitlements to Ukrainians. We will identify supports such as childcare, housing, schools, GP registration, English language classes etc. The process of integrating new arrivals into their host communities has already commenced, and we hope to see a variety of community events and activities over the coming months organised to help this happen.

Farmland Ponds

Ecologist at IRD Duhallow One of the best things you can do for nature is to create a pond. A wide range of species will utilise the ponds in some way or another including ducks, frogs, dragonflies, damselflies and bats. Through our two EIP projects here at IRD Duhallow (the Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot catchments Project and the Owentaraglin River Project), we classify farmland ponds as either ‘biodiversity ponds’ or ‘silt settlement ponds’. Biodiversity ponds provide a habitat for wildlife to live, breed and forage. These were once a common feature on farms in Ireland, where they were sometimes used as a water storage facility for cattle. These can be constructed by digging a hole, no deeper than 1.5m, in a field with a continuous supply of water. Water may be already present if the field is wet or can be diverted from a farm drain. A pond liner will not be

required as long as the soil is claybased. While any pond will likely yield benefits for wildlife, ideally the pond should have a range of depths to allow a diversity of aquatic plants to grow. It is best practice to allow the pond to vegetate by itself. Although it will look like a hole in the ground at first, within a year an abundance of plant species will begin to colonise the pond. Settlement ponds are usually installed in existing drains or water is diverted from existing drains or farm roadways into the settlement ponds, with the aim of reducing the amount of sediment entering rivers and streams. smother Freshwater Pearl Mussel or salmon eggs and can have pollutants attached that threaten water quality. A two or three chamber sediment pond is dug with an overflow channel after each chamber. Silt that enters the first chamber is deposited and clean or cleaner water overflows into the second. By the time water reaches the river, much of the sediment will have been deposited in the settlement pond. Of course, the first pond chamber will fill up over time and will have to be cleaned out every one to two years depending on the size of the pond and other environmental factors. The sediment cleaned out from the pond will be rich in phosphorous and can be carefully spread on the land, taking care not to leave the sediment in a heap. Before installing your farmland pond, always check to see if the proposed location is within a Special Area of Conservation. If this is the case, consent will be required from a relevant public authority before works commence.

“Keep smiling, mind-set is everything, it could be worse, think positive to be positive, keep your chin up” - these are all things we tell ourselves when we feel we need a pick-up. They may also be things people tell us when they want to reassure us, or provide support and a listening ear. Sometimes being positive can cover up reality, can lead us to believe that we can solve any problems that we might have by a simple change of mind-set, leading us to feel deflated when things don’t change. This is because, at times, the problem is exactly that; it’s a problem and it won’t be solved by thinking about positive things. The concept of toxic positivity is an interesting one - the idea of

dismissing negative emotions or distress and replacing them with false positives. When we become uncomfortable with difficult emotions, ignoring them won’t make them go away. Some signs that you are using positivity to cover emotions might include: • Dismissing feelings that are not comfortable for you. • Feeling guilt when you do feel uncomfortable emotions. • Only focusing on the positive aspects of situations. • Hiding or disguising how you really feel.

So how can you change to a more healthy way of thinking and viewing things? You can start to embrace all feeling - positive or negative - because when we suppress emotions, they usually rebound and last much longer. Total optimism can often do more harm than good. Embrace and face all possibilities. Just because you looked at negative outcomes does not mean they will come true. Pain and discomfort are part of everyday life. It is okay to feel down, to feel anxious, or to feel upset. We can feel these things, but we don’t have to stay feeling them. Happiness is not compulsory; you are allowed to feel other things.

We don’t tend to chew properly so the food isn’t broken down before it reaches the stomach which can cause digestive stress. Some tips to slow down your eating - Sit at the table for every meal you eat. Focus on the task at hand. Eating on the go leads to eating more calories generally - Take 20-40 chews per bite to ensure your food is fully broken down - Put your knife and fork down between bites

Studying the Dark Stuff

The universe is a strange and wonderful place, primarily empty space with a smattering of galaxies scattered about. Each galaxy has hundreds of billions of stars and the universe itself is so vast that it has hundreds of billions, if not trillions of galaxies. The enormity and scale is impossible to get our heads around. It takes rare geniuses like Einstein, Newton and Hawking, who have the uncanny ability to visualise, scrutinise and probe the depths and workings of the universe. Even the nearest star to us is 4 light years away, which in layman’s terms is a staggering 40 trillion kilometers, that is 40 with 12 zeros after it. The Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched in 1977 to study the solar

system travels at 62,000 km/h. At this speed, It would take 73,000 years to get to the nearest star and a cool 640 million years to get to the centre of our galaxy! It gets even stranger, the universe is expanding, it’s getting bigger and bigger. Conversely last week it was smaller, and even smaller still two weeks ago. Follow this logic through and we arrive at the Big Bang. A point in space and time when the universe burst into existence and filled the nothingness with matter and time. Since that point 13.8 billion years ago the universe has been rapidly expanding and continues to do so, driven apart by a mysterious force called dark energy. Our Sun and solar system including Earth sparked into life 4.5 billion years ago, formed from clouds of gas and dust from

previously burnt out stars. You and I, and the world around us is made from chemical elements forged in the nuclear furnace of these stars when they were alive, and from the heavier elements made when they blew themselves to bits billions of years ago. And that is just the stuff we can see. The universe of normal matter and energy that we can observe, accounts for a mere 5 % of the total universe. Dark matter - stuff we can’t see directly or don’t know what it is exactly, makes up 25% of the universe, with the aforementioned mysterious dark energy making up the remaining 70 %. In 1927, the biologist J.B.S. Haldane summed it up quite nicely. “My own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose”.

The Healing Power of Confession By TOM DENNEHY

Confession is one of the greatest sacraments the Church has given us and it is a shame that in todays world, we fail to avail of it. We have lost our sense of sin in a world where we can explain our sins away and let our sinful pride deceive us. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” 1. John 1;8. On Holy Thursday night, Jesus spoke these words at the Last Supper when he said, “This is My blood of the New and Eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins”. He made the ultimate sacrifice on the following day, Good Friday, by his death on the cross when he conquered sin and death and rose from the dead on Easter Sunday morning. On that very day, when He appeared to The Apostles and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit! Those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; those whose sins you retain, they are retained.” John 20;23. He could not give us this gift of confession until he had carried out what he had been sent to do by His Father to make atonement for our sins. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” John 3;16. Confession is one of the seven sacraments of our Catholic faith. Our sins will be forgiven provided we are truly sorry. But the real significance is that it is one of the great channels through which sanctifying grace is poured in to our souls. This grace is so important to help us lead a good life and set us on the road to eternal life.

In Confession, there is no judgement and no condemnation. We have the wonderful opportunity to be washed clean of all our sins and all our worries and anxieties. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be washed as white as snow” Isaiah 1;18. We live in very uncertain times and we do not know when we will be called to go before the judgement throne of God. We will be judged on the ten commandments, and we will be shown all the sins we have committed and their consequences. We have the opportunity during Easter to avail of Confession during a special night arranged in all the parishes for Easter Confession. Sadly, this did not take place in the last three years due to Covid 19. Take some time out to reflect on your life and examine your conscience by referring to the ten commandments. They have not gone away. They are cast in stone. Jesus did not change any of them. In fact, he added two more, love God and love your neighbour as yourself. You can google “examination of conscience” or you can refer to Catechism of the Catholic Church 2052 to 2557. Confession is a healing

sacrament, and all healing begins in the soul. When we are healed in the soul, we are then healed in mind and body. After you have confessed your sins, mention any hurt you find hard to forgive, any illness: physical, emotional, or spiritual you wish the Lord to heal for you. The Gospel message is to repent and believe the good news. Put this in to action this Lent by having a good confession and be washed clean just like the day you were baptised. Unburden yourself and remove any obstacle that is blocking the flow of sanctifying grace in to your soul. Jesus is the wonder counsellor. “Come to me all who are heavily burdened and I will give you rest “ Matthew 11;28 God our Father is there waiting to embrace us and pour out his love and mercy upon us.

Diverse and Delicious Recipes from Cultures Around the Globe By NOLLAIG MURPHY

Have you ever wondered what Development Officer the food you eat every day originated? Our daily meals provide us with sustenance but in reality, what we eat on a daily basis is more than mere nourishment. Many foods we regularly consume are closely intertwined with culture, identity, and traditions from all around the world. They have often been passed through the generations and were a way of preserving culture when people moved to different countries or even continents. Italian pizzas and pastas are arguably be some of the most famous foods in the world however there are an array of other foods from different cultures which are easily made, affordable and very enjoyable. In this week’s Discover Duhallow, we are looking at two new recipes; one of Asian origin and one from South America. This article is supported by the Communities Integration Fund

Guacamole Ingredients: • ¼ avocado, diced • 1 spring onion, finely chopped • ½ tbsp of fresh coriander, chopped, or 1 tsp dried coriander • 6 cherry tomatoes, quartered • 1 pinch of cumin seeds • 1 pinch of crushed chilli • ½ clove of garlic, peeled and crushed • ½ lime, juiced • 3 rye crispbreads Method 1. Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix gently 2. Spread on the crispbread and enjoy.

A Delicious Thai Butternut Squash Curry Ingredients: • 10 ml of vegetable oil • 1 tbsp of Thai red curry paste • 2-cm piece of fresh ginger, finely chopped or grated • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped or crushed • 3 medium-sized onions, peeled and finely chopped • 1 red pepper, de-seeded and finely chopped • 1 butternut squash, peeled, de-seeded and diced • 500 ml of water • 400 g tin of low-fat coconut milk • 400 g tin of chickpeas, drained • 1 bunch of fresh coriander, chopped • 1 lime, juiced • Serve with wholegrain basmati rice Method 1. Heat the oil in a large non-stick pan 2. When hot, add the curry paste, garlic, ginger, onions and red pepper and cook for 10 minutes until the vegetables are soft 3. Add butternut squash and water, bring to the boil before turning down the heat to low and simmering for 20 minutes 4. After the curry has simmered for 20 minutes, add the coconut milk and chickpeas and cook for a further 5–10 minutes 5. Add the lime juice and coriander just before serving with rice
