Celebrating the launch of Discover Duhallow Welcome to a new not-for-profit community magazine launched in the area of Duhallow on the 6th of September 2019. Discover Duhallow will initially be published fortnightly and will be distributed widely throughout Duhallow in local shops and community centres. It will include local news, features about community projects and campaigns, comment and opinion on what’s happening in the region, interviews with local people, and previews of local events.

Gardening tips by Rachel Budd, Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Community Garden Yesterday I felt the first early morning bite of Autumn, although I hope to get much more out of the garden, and the tomatoes can go on ripening until well into the winter as long as moulds and mildews don’t take the plants down, it is definitely time to be gathering in the harvest and storing fruit and vegetables for winter. It has been a fantastic year for onions and garlic, both of which can be dried in the sunshine, or polytunnel and hung up in a dry frost free place to last right through the winter. Early potatoes should have been harvested and eaten fresh from the ground by now, a real treat of the summer. Maincrop potatoes are ready for harvest once their foliage has died back. It is usually best to lift them before the ground gets too wet and muddy, and before the slugs demolish the crop. Potatoes can be stored in dry paper or hessian sacks, in a cool, dark frost free place. Check them regularly for signs of rot, and they should last well through winter. Another crop that just keeps on giving is the runner bean. Although it can have a bad press due to the stringy nature of old varieties, there is no crop that gives more yield per space on the ground. Pick your beans every few days, when they are small and tender and they will keep producing more until the first frost. Blanch and freeze excess beans, and all year you will have your own home grown frozen green beans. What could be better than that? Kale is another fantastic crop for the garden, and even easier to manage, as it is harvested by taking a few leaves at a time, from each plant. Kale can stand in the ground all through winter, to be harvested when required, and is packed full of nutrients to give us the very best defences against winter colds and flus. Autumn is a very important time for bees and other insects. Warm autumn days will see frantic buzzing around flowering plants, and bees try to build stores for winter. We are completely dependent on pollinating insects for 70% of our food so it is vitally important that we support these little creatures, whose numbers are plummeting due to habitat destruction, the use of herbicides and pesticides and difficult climate conditions.
Late flowering plants such as Rudbeckia, asters, heathers and sedums are loved by bees in the early autumn, but don’t overlook the importance of wild plants. Bees and other insects depend on a wide range of plants, many of which we would overlook. At this time of the year, we would be looking towards tidying up our gardens for winter, but wild areas should be left wherever possible, to support insects over the winter.

Bweeng, Kilshannig, Laharn & Lombardstown Kilshannig GAA are having one of their most successful years in recent times with the capture of both the Division 1 & 2 Football League Titles, U21A North Cork Championship and County, Munster & All Ireland Scor Champions so far this year. The year is not done yet and Kilshannig have plenty to play for with the JAFC Final versus Kilworth fixed for Saturday 6th September in Kildorrery @ 6 pm. Before that our JB2 Footballers are in the North Cork Championship Final against near neighbours Clyda Rovers which is fixed for Tuesday 3rd September in Glantane @ 8pm. Also our hurlers have qualified for the North Cork Division 1 Final against Clyda Rovers and the U21 Footballers are in the county 1/4 final verses Douglas, both games are yet to be fixed. The club has had great representation at inter county level this year with Killian Hanlon lining out at midfield for the Cork Seniors throughout the year. At U20 level we had Eanna O'Hanlon on the All Ireland winning team that recently defeated Dublin and we had Kieran Twomey, Bill Curtin and Colm O'Shea on the extended panel that day. At U17 level we had Ciaran O'Sullivan on the extended panel for the recent All Ireland success in Croke park verses Galway. Well done and congratulations to all involved with Cork during the year, ye did the club and county proud.
Father Paddy Buckley The Kilshannig Scor team were recent guests in Croke Park to play on All Ireland Sunday ahead of the Kerry v Dublin final. This was a great achievement and great to see the clubs name up in lights at an All Ireland final. Well done to all involved on this fantastic achievement as this the product of years of hard work by the this group and their mentors. The club would like to send its congratulations to Conor Lane from Lyre / Banteer on his recent appointment as referee for the Kerry / Dublin replay on Saturday

The Club is teaming up with Kidskorner Preschool in Bweeng to raise funds for Barnardos. We will host a kids non-competitive fun run on Saturday, September 21st at 12 noon. In Barnardos we are seeing the need for this support now more than ever as more and more children from our Early Years services are living in Hotels or in overcrowded accommodation without the space they need to live, play and grow. There are thousands more living in poverty and neglect - this is why your support of the Big Toddle is so incredibly important.

Donoughmore & Firmount History buffs: The Donoughmore Historical Society’s September lecture by Pat Punch is A Bird’s Eye View of Donoughmore and Co Cork, at Firmount National School on Tuesday September 10th at 8pm. A dementia café is held on the first Wednesday of the month every month in the Daily Grind in Kanturk. The Cullen Pipe Band took part in the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasglow in August which saw 195 pipe bands bring over 8000 pipers and drummers from around the world together for one weekend where the skills and ability of all is tested. Congratulations also to Connor Sinclair who won the MSR at the prestigious Masters Solo contest in Glasglow which was part of the Piping Live festival.

Focus on Newmarket.....
Newmarket is a finalist in the 2019 Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town Awards. This is the first time that a Town/Village from Duhallow has reached this final stage. They will be facing stiff competiton in the less than 2000 inhabitants category from Adare, Broadford, Villierstown, and the Copper Coast. The Judges will be coming to visit Newmarket for a 3 hour period on the morning of the 9th of September.
The towns people of Newmarket have been hugely supportive of this project and a trojan amount of work has been completed in a very short period of time. The Comittee responsible for planning this project have met 9 times for a duration of 2 hours each time, two public meetings were held in the James O’ Keeffe Institute to ensure the people of Newmarket had every opportunity to participate in the process. Some of Newmarkets’ residents in association with a professional gardener identified some new potential planting areas. Other residents were instrumental in identification of town windows where local enterprises can display their wares. An adhesive sticker has also been designed so local businesses can proudly display their involvement in these Enterprise Town Awards. A few evenings were also used to undertake a town wide clean up, the response was astounding with over 40 residents on some nights coming out

Newmarket as a Commercial Services, Manufacturing & Training Hub - Newmarket has a Myriad of business covering all types of industries.Information from the 2016 census shows that Newmarket Town has a population of 976 people, of which only 576 of these are of a working age (between the ages of 18-65). Seisiun and other events are a big hit Bruach Na Carraige Rockchapel had an extremely busy and successful summer programme this year. It started in July with the annual Seisiun that drew big crowds each Tuesday night, with some of Sliabh Luachra and Ireland's oldest music and traditional dances performed by leading musicians and dancers. A two-week summer camp for children from six to 15 years saw 45 children learn tunes, dances and songs. A two-week workshop on traditional step dancing with Sarah and Maurice O Keeffe prepared young dancers for future performances of traditional dances. A three-day workshop was held on the oldest traditional music, hosted by authorities Ann and Nickie McAuliffe. Charity hurling and giant coffee morning brewing Parents Of St Mark’s juvenile club are hosting their annual charity hurling morning on September 7. It is being held in conjunction with Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Hospice. Last year’s event raised €2,510 for what is the main annual national fundraiser for hospice care nationwide. The sky’s the limit for air ambulance A ceremony has taken place in Rathcoole to mark the inauguration of the country's first charity-led air ambulance service. The service, which was led by the Irish Community Rapid Response charity, has already been tasked more than 50 times since it went operational a month ago. From Rathcoole it can put the population in a 26,000-square kilometre area within a 20-minute reach of medical care. Even the most remote locations will be within the helicopter's reach, provided it can land there.

The Curious Case of the Jawless Living Fossils Beneath the surface of the River Blackwater and its tributaries swim fish that have no scales, no bones and no jaws. This curious group of species, known as lamprey, are not very well known to the Irish people, yet they have existed in Irish freshwaters for millions of years; well before man ever colonised the landscape. Over the month of September, IRD Duhallow RaptorLIFE will conduct the first comprehensive lamprey survey of the Owentaraglin and Upper Blackwater catchments. This will provide us critical information on their distribution and the conservation status of their populations within the catchment.

The earliest known occurrences of lamprey in the fossil record go back over 40million years. Early lamprey fossils are remarkably similar to those lamprey species living today. This leads scientists to believe that existing lamprey species have not evolved very much in all that time. The fact that these fish lack scales, bones and jaws indicates that they are very primitive on the evolutionary ladder. They are amongst the least developed vertebrates (animals with backbones), and represent the earliest stages of vertebrate evolution. Shaped like an eel, their skeletons are made of cartilage instead of bone. Instead of a jaw, their mouths are sucking discs. Essentially they are living fossils, giving us an accurate glimpse of underwater life millions of years ago. In Ireland there are three native species of lamprey; brook lamprey, river lamprey and sea lamprey. Lamprey spawn in rivers and streams, with high water quality and clean gravel beds. Upon hatching, lamprey larvae, known as ammocoetes move to silted nursery grounds where they filter food from the water. Here they grow and develop until they metamorphose into adults. River lamprey and sea lamprey migrate to sea as adults where they feed on the blood of other fish. In contrast, brook lamprey do not leave the freshwater environment and do not feed as adults. The River Blackwater and its tributaries have been designated as a Special Area of Conservation for all three species. The species rely on high water quality and clean gravel to reproduce. Barriers to their migration such as dams and weirs can also be detrimental. IRD Duhallow RaptorLIFE is working on improving lamprey spawning habitat in the SAC by reducing erosion of riverbanks and reducing nutrient input from agriculture. This is achieved through fencing of riverbanks, removal of invasive species, exclusion of livestock and restoration of riparian vegetation. IRD Duhallow is proud to play a role in the conservation of these curious living fossil, creatures.

Sports Millstreet Equestrian Georgia Bartlett (GBR) won the Horse Sport Ireland CCI 3 L after jumping a great clear round in the Green Glens Arena. A Two-time Junior European Eventing medalist, she is based in Newbury, Berkshire. The clear round over the James Tarrant designed showjumping track saw Georgia rise from 5th to the top of the podium. Overnight leader Harry Meade (GBR) rolled two poles to finish 3rd. One fence down on his 2nd place horse was enough for him to maintain that position. Michael McNally finished best of the Irish challengers in 4th overall. The action moved on to the Noel C. Duggan Engineering CCI4 L and there was a real international flavour to the final leaderboard with 5 nations represented in the top 6; Australia, Japan, Ireland, the USA and Great Britain. Lawton Chloe ridden by Christopher Burton (AUS) won the section after jumping an immaculate clear round. Meanwhile over at Drishane Castle the final section of cross country for the Eventing Ireland CCI 3*S. Kevin McNab (AUS) won riding Fernhill Tabasco. A fast clear round saw him finish ahead of Millie Dumas (GBR) Daniel Brown was the top Irish rider in 3rd. As the last of over 300 horseboxes exited the Green Glens Arena on Sunday evening, Event Director Thomas Duggan was grateful to all those that pulled together to make the event happen. He said: “The Event Rider Masters brought a new dimension to eventing in Millstreet and engaged viewers and supporters of the sport around the world. “We are extremely grateful to all the owners, riders, grooms, officials, volunteers and supporters that played their part during the five days of the competition. “We are already looking forward to the next competition in 2020 when hopefully we will enjoy more favourable weather conditions.”
