The seeds of our future So we are now in 2020 and we can start thinking about the new season in the garden. It will be a while before the ground conditions allow us to get outside. But January is a great time to be thinking about seeds. Seeds are the first and most essential element of the food chain: without seeds, there is no agriculture and therefore there is no food. We can’t overlook their importance, and yet beyond admiring the glossy pictures on the packaging, how much do we really think about where our seeds have come from, what went into producing them, and even whether they have any chance of growing in our gardens? In the last 45 years, the industrialisation of our food production has led to the concentration of the seed industry so that just five global corporations now control 75 per cent of the world’s vegetable seed market. This has massive implications for a country like Ireland. Seed companies will only keep active those varieties of seed that are returning a profit. The loss of diversity of vegetable varieties is huge. Unfortunately for us, we have a very different climate to the majority of Europe, and many of the profit-making vegetable varieties grown in Holland, France and Spain, for instance, simply will

not grow in Irish conditions. As a small country with a small population, and very small horticultural industry, we do not have the power to protect our own established varieties that have stood the test of time in Irish conditions and we risk losing our vegetable heritage. Fortunately, there are organisations and small businesses in Ireland who are tackling this head on. Irish Seed Savers Association in Scarriff Co Clare have been working for the last 29 years to, in their own words, “conserve Ireland’s very special and threatened plant genetic resources. “Our work focuses on the preservation of heirloom and heritage food crop varieties that are suitable for Ireland’s unique growing conditions.” Many of these are available to buy online by logging on to www.irishseedsavers.ie or from their shop in Scarriff. Focus on: Millstreet Community School BT Young Scientists: MCS has been a hotbed of activity since resuming in 2020. The TY students hit the ground running, putting the finishing touches to their projects before heading to the RDS in Dublin to take part in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition. It turned out to be one of the most successful visits for the school, with five separate awards coming to MCS students. Their research has thrown light on several areas that could improve life for many people. The projects included ‘Could hemp be the key to a sustainable future?’, presented by Éabha Sheehan, Fia Hurley and Taragh Casey, with teacher Eileen Lyons. They won a Highly Commended Award for their project. ‘An investigation into the fat quality in chilled milk before pasteurisation and how long it stays suitable for human consumption’, was presented by Orlaith Twomey and Jenny Kelleher, with teacher Francie Lyons. Jenny and Orlaith also won a Highly Commended Award. ‘Awareness of testicular cancer in young boys and men’ was researched by Harry Lenihen, Darragh Casey and Donagh Murphy, and also with teacher Eileen Lyons. They were awarded 3rd place in the Senior Social and Behavioural Category. ‘Herbal Leys: milk production for the future’ was presented by Bevin Murphy, Omar Daly and Darren Kiely, with teacher Jennifer O’Donoghue. They won the Teagasc Special Award, as well as achieving second place in the section award, Biological and Ecological Sciences. ‘What are the barriers that hinder Ireland’s Greta Thunberg?’ by David O’Brien, Una Healy and Finn Radamm, with teacher Shane Guerin, proved a captivating project, generating interest and discussion in this vital area that depends on awareness to deliver change. Big thanks are due to Millstreet Community Council, who have been supporting the BT initiative in the school for more than ten years.

In this module, students uncover the causes of social problems that leave people vulnerable while also focusing on solutions. Their hard work raised over €300 and this will help SVP’s work with the homeless. This is part of the school’s commitment to Global Citizenship Education, a core part of education in MCS. Cullen Pipe Band is marching on The AGM of Cullen Pipe Band was held on December 13th at the band hall. Chairman Patrick Fleming welcomed all attendees and both he and Con Houlihan Pipe Major thanked the members, parents, committee and the community for their support. Another remarkable year for the band, having played at local events including Cullen Feis, leading home Cullen natives and All Ireland U20 winning footballers, the victorious Knocknagree GAA team, the US Ambassador’s visit to Boherbue and Millstreet St. Patrick’s Day parades. At the annual Sean Moylan Commemoration the band had the pleasure of playing with neighboring Kiskeam brass and reed band. The band were delighted to play for Rod Stewart in Páirc Ui Chaoimh during the summer. 2020 is off to a great start with

CHAMPIO Duhallow students triumph with environmental projects In 2019, youth activism for the environment made global news as students campaigned for policy makers to listen to the scientists on matters relating to climate change, biodiversity loss and sustainable food production. While young activists and advocates were taking a stand, young scientists throughout the country were advancing scientific knowledge on these matters.

aspects of the ecology of the elusive lamprey species of Duhallow. These little known species of fish are protected under the EU Habitats Directive and the Blackwater is designated for their conservation. The investigation conducted by the boys proved to be rather novel as Brook Lamprey and River Lamprey are not extensively studied in Ireland. The students assisted RaptorLIFE ecologists with an electrofishing survey of lamprey. They then conducted extensive environmental monitoring of river conditions in order to determine what the optimal conditions for the species were. The boys showed that elevation and sediment depth were the most

evident in the students of Duhallow. Three such projects were undertaken under the mentorship of the staff of IRD Duhallow and each brought home an award in their category! The projects undertaken by the students were in collaboration with the RaptorLIFE and Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments programmes, and focused on issues of interest to river management and biodiversity conservation in Duhallow.

The work conducted by Noah, Patrick and Nojus has important implications for how we manage our river systems for the conservation of biodiversity.

Hannah and Johannah undertook a detailed study of the added biodiversity benefits of riparian restoration. Working on farms in the catchments of the Allow, Dalua, Owentaraglin and Upper Blackwater the students investigated how riparian restoration works undertaken by IRD Duhallow to prevent erosion have also had added benefits for native biodiversity. As part of SAMOK and RaptorLIFE, livestock were excluded from rivers by erecting fencing and eroding banks were re-stabilised by planting locally sourced willows. Hannah and Johannah surveyed vegetation, pollinators such as butterflies and bumblebees, and other insect groups associated with willows that were planted between one and ten years ago.

They found that native plant communities recover over time once over grazing and erosion are prevented. They also showed that pollinator diversity and abundance was positively linked to native flora diversity, highlighting the importance of riparian restoration for the conservation of butterflies and bees. As part of their work, the girls produced a leaflet educating others about making recommendations on riparian management.

Duhallow is known to be a stronghold for the barn owl, one of our most iconic birds of prey. IRD Duhallow and Duhallow Birdwatch Group have installed and monitored the success of barn owl nest boxes throughout Duhallow for a number of years. Using these nest boxes as study locations, Fionn investigated how habitat conditions and diet influence barn owl breeding success. Under the mentorship of RaptorLIFE, Fionn visited nest box locations and surveyed surrounding hedgerows and small mammal populations. He correlated this information with data collected on the number of chicks fledged from each site. His surveys indicated that prey species such as wood mice and bank voles were more abundant at sites where the barn owls had

successfully bred. By analysing the remains of over 250 food pellets left behind by the chicks, he showed that barn owls preferentially feed non-native species such as greater white toothed shrew and bank vole to their young. Identifying the prey by their skeletal remains, Fionn showed for the first time that the greater white toothed shrew, has spread as far west as the Cork/Kerry border. This is important because the greater white-toothed shrew is a relatively recent introduction to Ireland and is spreading rapidly. Over the four days of the competition the judges were so impressed by Fionn’s ability to communicate his research to a wide audience that they also awarded him the Rev Dr Tom Burke Bursary for Science Communication.

Another very successful year for Dromtariffe GAA On Friday night last in front of a large crowd the 2020 AGM of Dromtariffe GAA took place. Chairman Sean Feely welcomed the delegates. He thanked all who helped run the club in any way during 2019, and the players. Finally, he asked delegates to pause and remember past members or family members who have died during the year. Noel O’Sullivan, Secretary, gave a run down of all cup, league and championship results during the year for both the footballers and hurlers. He complimented the players who adapted admirably to competing in the higher grade of
Division 5 of the county league and gaining promotion to Division 4 for 2020. He said the hurlers are showing great promise, winning their first Duhallow league and also retaining the U21 Hurling championship. Andrew Murphy, Club Treasurer. said the development of the second pitch took the main focus of the club expenditure and grant money, with phase one of the development nearing completion. Macra’s members triumph across the board

Above, Banteer Macra’s Capers team who have qualified for the All-Ireland final of the variety show competition on February 1st Congratulations to the Banteer Macra Capers team, their producer Heather Healy and their backstage staff for the great show they put on in Riverstick on Saturday, January 11th, in the All-Ireland semi final of the family oriented variety show competition. An absolutely fantastic night of entertainment was delivered by all who took part and the energy radiating from the Banteer team was astounding. Stiff competition was seen between all teams, but our crew pulled out all the stops and will now progress to the All-Ireland finals taking place on Saturday, February 1st at Eire Og hall, Ovens, Co Cork. The Avondhu regional round of Macra titles took part on Friday night last, in the Arches Bar, Mallow. Members from all over the region competed for the titles of Mr Personality, Miss Macra, Queen of The Land and Blue Jeans Country Queen. Contestants had to do an interview in front of the audience and also do an optional party piece. All contestants interviewed very well and came across so natural up in front of the audience. Banteer Community Childcare welcome a grant of €10,000 towards equipment improvements at the centre announced by IRD Duhallow this past week. The grant is from the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Small Capital Grants Scheme for Social Enterprises. The scheme, which is funded by the Dormant Accounts Fund, provides grants of between €2,000 and €15,000 for equipment, repairs or refurbishments which will enable local centres to improve their service delivery. The grant scheme is administered on the Department’s behalf by the network of Local Development Companies (LDCs) such as IRD Duhallow. Certified Irish Angus beef booster In December, we were one of the lucky groups to be selected for the next stage of the Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition. We are three transition year students, Anna O’Connor, Laura Archdeacon and Michelle O’Neill from Scoil Mhuire, Kanturk. We are going to the South Court Hotel in Limerick for an interview with a representative from the sponsors, Irish Angus Producer Group, Kepak and ABP. We will also be interviewed by an agricultural science teacher. The Certified Irish Angus Beef Competition aims to help students gather an understanding of how much care and attention is required to produce and market the highest quality of beef for consumers. Hall’s 60th birthday celebrated On Monday 4th January 1960 Ballydaly Hall was blessed and offically opened by the parish priest Canon Michael Costello. This was the culmination of almost a year of meetings, planning and fundraising by many in the locality. In the years since the Hall opened it has been a venue for whist drives, travelling shows, slide shows and Christmas parties. Meetings have been held by the GAA, Macra and Athletic Clubs, Comhaltas and the IFA. It was also the setting for the many and varied talks organised by Ballydaly ICA, and later the Ballydaly Resource Group. More recently it has played host to set dancing classes, computer courses, and CPR training. A constant for the last 42 years has been the 45 drive, held on Sheehans Bar and Central Bar; ticket sellers in Ballydaly: Guerin’s shop. Tickets €2 each or three for €5. Yearly ticket €90. Ballydaly Hall Sunday nights in the autumn and spring. Many improvements have been made to the Hall since it opened, the most recent of which were completed in August 2019. Freemount Macra tops again Congratulations to our Capers team who qualified for the National Final recently in Killarney. Our cast took to the stage in the Great Southern hotel. Five teams competed on the night with two qualifying for the final. Thanks to all those who showed their support! Our team are now through to the All-Ireland final on Saturday 1st February in Ovens. Congratulations to our Capers producer Miriam Angland on being awarded ‘Best Producer’ on the night and to Aoife O’Connor for being awarded ‘Best Female’. What we want from our Local Politicians for LEADER. The Irish Local Development Network to which IRD Duhallow is affiliated, has conducted independent research amongst all its members. The result is that we want specific changes to the next LEADER programme so that Rural Areas can be rejuvenated and made sustainable for people to live, work and enjoy recreation in.
On behalf of LEADER please ask your local politicians canvassing your vote for the following: Ͳ x
Simplifying and reducing bureaucracy – The promotion of Local Development Companies like IRD Duhallow to be reinstated as independent Local Action Groups (LAGs). Reducing the overly bureaucratic rules that make it so difficult for communities to make applications and draw down their funds.

Ensuring effective rollover to LEADER post 2020 – interim funding for continuity and core funding for the organisation.

Protecting the core LEADER principles – which have served rural Ireland well and are seen to be eroded currently.

Putting in place adequate programme supports – increased LEADER budgets: IRD Duhallow’s LEADER programme was cut by almost 70%. This needs to be reinstated not only for the communities, organisations and businesses that avail of the funding but all the local suppliers in our local towns and villages where the bulk of that budget was spent.

Expanded use of available EU CLLD funding – To assist more joined up thinking and planning at community level and to avoid communities having to apply to multiple organisations in order to adequately complete a project.

For Social Inclusion we ask that – the 50% budget cuts of 2010 be reversed so there is sufficient funds available in Duhallow to support the unemployed, lone parents, vulnerable young people, low income farm families, carers, older people, those with mental health issues and learning difficulties to reach their potential

Meeting at the church car park in Millstreet. This trail covers a variety of terrain with an option of including an ascent to the top to the cross. Some steep climbs.
All walkers have the option of going at their own pace as there will be someone leading the walk and another at the back with those who prefer a more leisurely pace. Hen harrier corridor on track
Rural Social Scheme (RSS) participants removing brush from a clearfell site to prepare the hen harrier corridor We are pleased to confirm that we are finalising works in the foraging corridor for the hen harrier. This corridor is over 3km long and spans the upper reaches of the Munster Blackwater river on the Cork-Kerry border.

It was created with the help of Coillte, which was responsible for the licencing process and extracting conifers within 50 metres of both banks of the river. From our side, IRD Duhallow’s RaptorLIFE project took care of removing brush after felling and replanting some of the clear felled land with native broadleaf tree species. The final block of forestry will be felled in early 2020 and the corridor will then be complete. Clearing conifers from the 3km stretch of the river allows us not only to create a corridor between fragmented areas of upland blanket bogs but also to create over 14 hectares of future foraging habitat for hen harrier and other species. This corridor brings a hope for many species that are currently suffering declines in numbers and are impacted by fragmented and shrinking habitat as well as the lack of ability to move between rich biodiversity areas.
