and I want to congratulate each of the 19 participants for their achievement in being shortlisted in their category. We had an unprecedented 274 nominations, which was the largest number of entries ever received for our business awards and we look forward to seeing who will take on from the list of illustrious previous overall winners including last year’s winner, Irish Roll Forming, and be awarded the Best Duhallow Business of 2023. I want to most sincerely thank all the sponsors who came back on board again this year: AIB, Bank of Ireland, Duhallow Skillnet, Kanturk Mart, Kanturk Printers, McCarthy Insurance Group and SE Systems. Without their support nights like this would just not be possible. Since its inception, supporting local businesses and employment has been a key priority for IRD Duhallow and we offer a suite of soft, and capital supports for local
employers through LEADER, SICAP and our Local employment Service. We also undertake considerable work in the talent agenda, training, and upskilling those who have been distanced from the labour market through our many programmes for carers, those with disabilities, our Job Centre, Community Employment and Tús. We also provide a wide range of Skills training for the region’s current workforce through Skillnet support for the staff of the region’s businesses. We are delighted to have Alan Shortt, who hails from Duhallow, as our Master of Ceremonies for this year’s event, and we are looking forward to a great night’s entertainment. This year we welcomed a new category – Best Food Related Business and this was an extremely popular new addition, evidence of how important food businesses are to rural areas such as Duhallow. I think it’s fair to say that the publicity that each participant receives is one of the real prizes and I want to thank our team of Caleb, Tadhg, and Brendon who work on Discover Duhallow under the guidance of Louise Bourke and Eileen Linehan, for putting together this wonderful supplement. We are increasing the print run to ensure demand is me once again. I must also acknowledge the trojan work of our local photographer Sheila Fitzgerald for all the images within. Laura Curtin of Platinum Solutions and Shane Lynes of Lyne Media have done a fantastic job of keeping the business awards on the top of everyone’s social media feed and I’m looking forward to seeing their videos, featuring each of the shortlisted finalists which will be
broadcast on the night. This year’s IRD Duhallow Business Awards Ceremony is once again a sold-out event. The team at Duhallow Community Food Services and IRD Duhallow under the steady hands of Monica Gilmore, Linda O’Connor and Marie Fleming have pulled out all the stops to create a super banquet menu with as much local produce as possible. So, if you have not already booked and secured your ticket for the 23rd of November, you can keep up with the announcements of winners by tuning in online to our social media channels as there will be regular updates provided. The event itself presents a great opportunity to build further business connections, identify opportunities and synergies and increase business sales. Today, most of us have a Credit Union account, but the movement didn’t arrive in Ireland until 1958. In 1963, Seamus O’Mahoney, Michael Lucey, Donal Hanrahan,
and Tommy Cross formed a plan. RTE had run shows about credit unions setting up in towns and communities, and they had what was described as “an enthusiastic chat.” The first official meeting of Kanturk Credit Union was held at the Edel Quinn Hall on the 16th October 1963. The standard was set early. Today they offer more services than ever before; car, personal, and home loans, as well as loans for making homes greener. Their annual art competition is a huge hit every year, but their work with the community is not limited to this. They celebrated their 60th anniversary this year with a wonderful party, and are more than happy to celebrate the history of Kanturk. Regularly they share historical photos from the area, and their social media presence has given yet another point of contact for their community endeavours. and improvements made to their services. The team of ten has a the community’s best interests at heart, and this is compounded with a voluntary board. “Empowering our community. Our gym is more than just a place for exercise. It’s a hub for inspiration, growth and unity. After endless fundraising, obtaining grants, securing equipment, construction and more, the Kiskeam Community Gym opened its doors. The ground floor opened first with a host of weights and cardio equipment, followed by the
The upstairs studio hosts a regular schedule of classes, including spinning refurbished upstairs opening in 2022 to host spinning and circuit classes. There was a lack of fitness and gym options in the community - many found there were few affordable options and this would bridge the gap by providing accessible and affordable facilities for all age groups. While the primary customers are Kiskeam residents, there are members from all over Duhallow. There are no restrictions teenager to senior, beginner to advanced. What matters is serving community need. The Gym relies on volunteers for operating and maintaining the
facility, and they continually seek feedback from members. They aim to make the gym even more accessible, including to those who have disabilities. This is very possible with grants and fundraising, and their hope for educational programmes and social events will tie in with this. Waterpower had to move to Kanturk to access Broadband and IRD helped Waterpower to move office from Banteer to Kanturk. IRD also organized a fantastic mentor to help .” Electrician Dan Twomey built his first hydro electric station in 1985 to provide heating, electricity, and hot water to his home in Banteer. From there, he caught a liking for the process! He started designing and building hydro stations all over the island, and has since constructed 45 stations from Kerry to Belfast. In 2002 he founded Waterpower Engineering and in 2003, he secured a license from the commission of regulation of utilities (CRU) to trade excess energy. WaterPower harness the power of wind, sun, biomass, and of course, water. With this, they supply homes and businesses with electricity. Weddings are stressful. And Auntie Katie’s knows just how to make them easier. Auntie Katie - Katie Lawlor worked in childcare for a number of years, and had done some childcare at weddings. She realised the need for this kind of specific childcare, and Auntie Katie’s was the answer. Auntie Katie’s was established in 2021 and her unique service has taken the country by storm. They’re based in Kanturk, but in their 2 years, they have covered 17 counties.
The team of 5 keep kids entertained and enriched during wedding days, and they are in demand, often covering 7 weddings a week! Their most popular plan is the 24 hour care and entertainment package, and their offerings go up to 48 hours! They also cater for bridal parties and wedding guests’ children. During these shifts, they keep kids comfortable and relaxed. They keep an eye to feeding, naps, nappies, and everything in between. And with Auntie Katie, there’s no such thing as boredom! Each member comes equipped with a magical suitcase full of toys,
headphones, colour books, fidget toys, books, and more! They focus on the well-being of the children. Weddings can be such a long, busy, and overwhelming day for little ones. Having a dedicated adult makes the day easier, and puts the minds of kids and parents at ease. Expansion is a goal. They have worked one wedding abroad - in lovely Portugal - and they hope to start with the UK in their future expansions.

Patrick Barry has 3 passions; cars, technology and business. His background in software engineering, and his interest in cars led to CustomsDeclaration. ie. With a small and focused team of 5, they are a 100% digital and paperless company who work from home and avail of spaces such as the Banteer Digital Hub. CustomsDeclaration.ie offers personalised online customs agent service for vehicle import. Such a process can be confusing and overwhelming, but the team is certified in customs compliance and trade facilitation. Trade facilitation is defined as “how procedures and controls concerning the movement of good cross national borders can be improved to reduce associated cost burdens and maximise
efficiency while safe guarding legitimate regulatory objectives”. Definitely something worth leaving to the pros! Brexit introduced a whole host of challenges; delays , increased cost, and trade barriers. But with their custom built software, they’ve developed a way for first time importers to clear a vehicle in under an hour. This software combined with the customs expertise links in directly with customs systems and the process is streamlined for the first time. The hope is there to create more local employment and offer more services, all compounded with the belief in bringing money to the local economy while serving international markets. Even small businesses in rural places can operate on a global scale. They specialise in declarations for everything from motor
cycles to HGVs, and even some non vehicle imports. While the majority of vehicles come from the UK or Japan, other countries are not an issue. They’ve been rated #1 customs agent by TrustPilot, and in just 18 months, their service has been used by 3,000 customers. Patrick and his team aim to keep things easy and simple to work through, along with providing excellent customer service.

“Always give people more than they expect”. That is Brendan Fleming’s philosophy, and it works perfectly with The Animal Shack. The Animal Shack was established in Rathmore 2022 by Brendan and his wife Marie. Best known for The Animal Roadshow, the pair opened up the pet supply store after Covid. They saw the large catchment for such a store, and kept it very much in their own style. With a rustic, homely feel, they describe it as a “shopping experience”. They focused on recycled materials and reclaimed wood, and while it is in

The workshop areas hold pet classes and seasonal camps, as well as a decorated party spot. These parties include interactions with animals from their Roadshow. products, they aim to source local and eco friendly. They hold stock that’s grain free and vegan, as well as local handmade items and more well known and expected items. As an eager team, the work never stalls for long - they are already planning to build an online shop! They also hope to expand their workspace to install an outdoor spot with the hopes of doing planting and nature schools, as well as pet care and other educational workshops. All of this will be complimented by what they’ve titled “a home school nature hub”. Their experience can be felt through every interaction, and they and their employee offer individual advice and care tips. They have customers from Cork and Kerry visiting, and their visitors have all kinds of creatures - from dogs and cats to reptiles and fish. The milking world grew boring, and this led him to look up the most expensive beef in the world. Wagyu was not available in Ireland at the time - the breed is a Japanese one famous for it’s marbled appearance.

The face of Finnow, Conor Sheahan He invested in embryos and now his Wagyu steak and burgers sell all over Ireland. He has altered their traditional care; instead of grain, the animals are grass fed for 4 years, and then swapped to a custom locally milled, high protein and energy based feed. However, he did keep the tradition of massaging the animal - this part of their care is vital to their comfort and happiness. It’s all a local affair; his farm is outside Millstreet, the animals are processed at an abattoir in Cork, and they are packed and stored locally, and the business is just the Sheahan family. Currently, they’re converting to organic, with the aim to be fully organic by 2024. As a member of the Irish Organic
Association, they are passionate about high standards of animal welfare and value sustainability and chemical free farming practices. They hope to plant a native Irish forestry and continue efforts for bogland preservation. Finnow Farm have dedicated almost 15 years to perfecting their product, ensuring quality breeding, quality genetics, and a quality Irish product for the global market.

Petra Kriva opened Yumm Café in September of 2019, and her name choice is accurate! Having worked as a chef and pastry chef for 6 years, she had always dreamed of opening her very own cafe. She adapted with
Ferny Murphy, Wandee Carroll, owner Petra Kriva, Asia Healy, Barbara Piotrowska, Aurelija Satiene Covid, and switched the business to takeaway, and these days, the comfy, cosy cafe has 11 staff and a fantastic menu. Seasonal treats, cakes for all kinds of occasions, speciality cookies, pancakes and waffles, and a French toast with Dottie and Dora’s goat cheese there’s something for everyone! Everything is made in house, and Yumm are always looking to expand their products and maybe one day, to sell online. Young and old flock from all over to enjoy Yumm’s tasty treats.
In 2022, the cafe won Best Use of Digital marketing at the IRD Duhallow Business Awards, and since then they’ve gone from strength to strength. Their cakes have only gotten more impressive since then too! Already they’re offering their Late Late Toy Show Treat box, and their multi layered, personalised cakes are a sight to behold!
