eattle—On November, 5th three hundred immigrant Latinas from forty cities and nine counties gathered at Latinas Connected for Change! This first Western Washington conference in Spanish celebrated Latina’s strengths and accomplishments, reinforced community support systems, and fortified Latina organizing capacity. Hope and determination led to unprecedented successes: the city of Seattle sponsored us, the Seattle Center lent us their Exhibition Hall, and the Children’s Museum funded one hundred children

Our sisterhood gives me the courage I need to keep going.” Healing and liberation happened while recognizing their strengths, “I freed myself through the recognition of my achievements.” The women claimed their leadership potential and joined other Latinas to create a more visible movement, “I am here because we need to have more visible leadership in the Latino community. If we do so, our community will be stronger, more responsive, and willing to act upon the problems we face.” The need to connect with other everyday leaders and regain hope for a better future was fulfilled, “I reaffirmed my conviction to continue to support my Latino community. Today I discovered that I am not alone, many women share my dreams. Together we can do more. Change can actually happen.”

Las participantes se mostraron agradecidas por tener un espacio seguro para compartir sus experiencias, “Me gustó mucho que en esta conferencia estuvimos en un lugar a salvo para compartir y hablar nuestra verdad en español.” La conferencia fortaleció su sentido de pertenencia “Estar aquí me hace sentir que pertenezco. Las participantes se liberaron al reconocer sus logros, reclamaron su potencial como líderes y declararon que querían unirse a otras Latinas para crear un movimiento más notorio, “Estoy aquí porque tenemos que tener un lide razgo más visible en la comunidad Latina. Si lo hacemos, nuestra comunidad será más fuerte, más sensible y dispuesta a resolver los problemas que enfrentamos.” La necesidad de conectarse con otras líderes cotidianas y recuperar la esperanza de un futuro mejor se satisfizo, “Reafirmo mi convicción de continuar apoyando a mi comunidad.
