The Iowa PGA hosts three Junior and Pee Wee events for the Fall Series. One of the fall tournaments is an ACE point event on the Iowa PGA Junior Tour, and two are MAJOR point events. 2021 marks the fourth year of the Iowa PGA Fall Series. Most Fall Series events are open to non-members and members. Members will receive a discount on their entry fees for the Fall events.

Contract Through 2022 The Iowa PGA is proud to announce a new three-year contract with Blue Top Ridge and Riverside Casino and Golf Resort to host the Iowa Open through 2022. Blue Top Ridge has played host to the Iowa Open since 2017. Blue Top Ridge was designed by renowned architect of championship golf courses, Rees Jones. Blue Top Ridge combines everything that is expected of a championship golf course in the Midwest. Playing over 7,500 yards, Blue Top Ridge is rated by the USGA as the most difficult golf course in the state of Iowa. The scenic course lends itself to spectators with ample space for them to move around the golf course freely while combining great golf with great views.
The 54-Hole Championship, is open to Professionals and Amateurs alike with a full field of 144 players and will be played on July 30-August 1, 2021. There will be both an open and senior divisions with the winner of the open division taking home $25,000 (based on full-field of 144 players). The field is made up of players from all over Iowa as well as 10-15 different states. We wish to thank owners Dan and Bobby Kehl along with Director of Golf Bryan Haas for their dedication in hosting the Iowa Open through 2022.
Started in 1927, the Iowa Open has been a Midwest golf championship with a long list of winners and participants that have shaped the game both in Iowa and around the country. Most famously, Zach Johnson is a 2-time winner of the event. Players like Labron Harris, Ken Schall, Curt Schnell, JD Turner, Mike McCoy, Mike Bender, Mark Egly and Sean McCarty are all past winners as well. Administered by the Iowa PGA Section, the championship continues this long history of quality golf in the state of Iowa.

Jim Hasley
Jim “Papa” Hasley The Iowa Golf Hall of Famer Jim “Papa” Hasley passed away on Monday, May 31, 2021. Hasley started doing baseball at a young age but found another sport that he fell in love with. He was a light in the room when you walk into and he would always make you feel special. Hasley spent most of his golf career as Head Golf Professional at Emeis Golf Course in Davenport, Iowa. He left Emeis back in 2001, instead took over Red Hawk Golf adn Learning Center for the city and helped establish the First Tee of the Quad-Cities chapter there. Career Highlights • Iowa Section PGA Professional of the Year: 1985 and 2001 • Head Professional of Emeis Golf Course for over 30 years • Iowa Golf Association Professional of the Year: 1985 • Program Director for the First Tee of the Quad Cities since 2001 • “The Hasley Cup Matches” are named in his honor for the influence he has had in the Quad City area • Iowa Section PGA Junior Golf Leader of the Year: 2003 Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hasley Family and friends.

KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship Southern Hills | May 27-30, 2021 Tulsa, Oklahoma – The Iowa PGA had two Iowa PGA Professional’s that competed in the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship on May 27-30, 2021 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at Southern Hills. Chad Proehl of Sugar Creek Municipal Golf Course and Jeff Schmid of Brown Deer Golf Club. Day one of the event had to suspend due to bad weather and Schmid had seven holes left of play during round one. They will be finishing up play for round one this morning. Proehl’s first round he carded birdies on holes 3 and 16; bogeys on holes 2, 14 and 18; an eagle on hole 5 including a double bogey on hole 7. Proehl’s second round he carded a birdie on hole 13; bogeys on holes 1, 5, 8, 16, 17 and 18 with a double bogey on hole 14. Proehl’s two-day total round of 73-78=151, +11.

Schmid’s first round he carded bogeys on holes 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12. Schmdi’s second round he carded a birdie on hole 3; bogeys on holes 1, 4, 10 and 14 with double bogeys on holes 16 and 18. Schmid’s twoday total round of 76-78=154, +14. Both Proehl and Schmid missed the final round cut.

Moving in the Right Direction With the 2021 golf season well underway, it seems as though golf has kept moving in the right direction. Coming off the heels of last year’s unexpected boom due to the coronavirus pandemic, courses are as busy as ever and people seem to be excited to get out and play. We are seeing it in our entry numbers as we have had waitlists in our Iowa Mid-Amateur, IGA Match Play, IGA Women’s Match Play, and Iowa Amateur. Having a waitlist at the Iowa Mid-Amateur and Women’s Match Play is a first for us.
I think the opportunity the game of golf had last year when it was, in some respects, “the only game in town” drove so many golfers to come out of hibernation that it sparked an interest in getting back into competitive golf. That is great for the IGA, but also great for golf courses around the state.

Gibb Competes in US Senior Open Prior Lake, Minnesota - Judd Gibb of Hanson’s Custom Golf competed Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at The Wilds Golf Club in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Gibb won after a three-hole playoff against Jerry Smith and Tim Herron to capture his way into the 2021 USGA Senior Open. Chad Proehl of Sugar Creek Municipal Golf Course, Jeff Schmid of Brown Deer Golf Club, Tracy Vest of Blue Top Ridge, Ben Montgomery of Airport National Golf Complex, Darin Fisher of The Preserve on Rathbun Lake, Judd Gibb of Hanson’s Custom Golf.
Darin Fisher Fisher’s first round he carded birdies on holes 1 and 7 including bogeys on holes 3, 4, 9 and 15 which placed him tied for 88th place. Fisher’s one-day total 37-37=74, +2 on the Wanamaker Course. His second round he carded birdies on holes 2, 6 and 14; a bogey on hole 12 and a double bogey on hole 3 which placed him tied for 36th place going into the third round. Fisher’s two-day total 74-70=144, +1. His third round he carded birdies on holes 6, 12, 14 and 16; bogeys on holes 5, 7, 9, 10, 13 and 18 including a double bogey on hole 3 which placed him tied for 54th place going into the final round. The Drive, Chip & Putt Championship is a national program for juniors 15 and under. Juniors compete in three golf skills - driving, chipping and putting. Juniors first compete at a local qualifier throughout Iowa and Western Illinois, then the top 2 from each local site will advance to one of two Sub-Regionals. The top two Sub-Regional qualifiers in each age division advance to the Regional Final. The overall winner in each age division from the Regional will advance to the Championship at Augusta National! New for 2021, the Iowa PGA will be hosting 25 Local Qualifiers. 2 of the 25 qualifiers will be private qualifiers and are open to only members at the courses hosting. These qualifiers will be run by the courses PGA Professional and their staff. Sites and dates for all qualifiers can be found on other side.

John Deere Classic - Celebrate Its 50th
JOHN DEERE CLASSIC TO CELEBRATE ITS 50TH... Barry Cronin Cronin Communications, Inc. 847-867-3032 (mobile) bcronin@cronincommunications.com A year after it was sidelined by the pandemic, the John Deere Classic will be back in a big way this month and marking the 50th tournament since its inception in 1971. The excitement is palpable all around the Quad Cities, according to tournament officials. “There’s a real energy in town as we approach this year’s event,” said John Deere Classic tournament director Clair Peterson. “There was real sadness last year, not having the tournament, but in light of the health issues at the time, it was the right decision…The only alternative was to have the event with no fans, and no one felt like that matched up with what people here in town wanted to have happen.” Especially when they would have essentially been throwing a 50th birthday party with no one being able to come to the party. Fans will be back this year and tickets are on sale via johndeereclassic.com for the tournament scheduled for July 7-11 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. This year, fond memories will be celebrated. Steve Stricker’s three-peat in 2009, ’10 and ’11. The loyalty and leadership of Cedar Rapids’ own Zach Johnson, the 2012 champion and winner of both the Masters and British Open. The 26 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Summer Issue
excitement of a 19-year-old Jordan Spieth’s maiden PGA Tour victory in 2013 and another in 2015. And the 2017 victory by Bryson DeChambeau a few years before he became the PGA Tour’s Incredible Bulk. All have been etched into golf’s collective consciousness thanks to the Quad Cities-based tournament the title sponsorship of which Deere assumed in 1998. Of course, the present tense will matter most to this year’s 156 contestants, most notably 2019 champion Dylan Frittelli, who has held his crown longer than anyone in John Deere Classic (JDC) history. The 31-year-old South African who played his college golf alongside Spieth at Texas is looking forward finally to have the opportunity to defend his title, especially now that fans are back. He said he loves the community feel of the tournament, which he first learned about as a youngster growing up in Johannesburg. “I didn’t even know what a John Deere tractor was,” Frittelli said. “I guess at the time in the early or late ‘90s we didn’t have too many of those. But now I know exactly what it is, having watched the tournament through my teens and getting to the States, obviously, and hearing country songs and hearing people mention it. The brand itself is obviously huge.”
John Deere Classic - Celebrate Its 50th As he did in 2019, Frittelli plans to stay with a local family rather than a hotel like the vast majority of players. Those personal accommodations only served to intensify the already strong community feel, according to Frittelli. This year, unlike 2019, he might even go out to dinner. “I was actually scared to go out for, like, lunch or dinner in the town because I felt like I was probably going to get hounded by local people,” he said of his 2019 experience. “I just felt, like, if I went out, I was going to be mobbed by some kind of paparazzi or something. I know that’s a little bit crazy to think of but…especially when I started doing well, I figured people were going to recognize me…Hopefully this year I can get out and see more of the town and try to experience the community a bit more.” Frittelli will be joined by other past champions, including Johnson and Stricker, who is skipping the U.S. Senior Open to be in the JDC field. Sean O’Hair (2005), John Senden (2006), Jonathan Byrd (2007), Brian Harman (2014), Ryan Moore (2016) and Michael Kim (2018) will all be on hand. So will Russell Henley, who recently topped the leaderboard at the U.S. Open for the first three rounds at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego before finishing T-13. Other U.S. Open contestants in the field are Kevin Streelman of Wheaton, Illinois (T-13), former Iowa State golfer and Indiana native Chris Baker (T-26, his best finish of the season), 2017 runner up and native Hoosier Patrick Rodgers (T-31), Chez Reavie (T-40) and Troy Merritt, a native of Osage, Iowa, who finished T-65 at the Open. Some of the tournament’s international flavor will be provided by Korea’s Sungjae Im, who finished T-35 at the Open, Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain (T-50), Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas (T-57) and Argentinian Fabian Gomez (T-70). “We can’t wait to see our fans again,” said Peterson, noting that last year’s JDC helped raise $12.2 million for charity even though it didn’t happen. The tournament has raised $133 million over its history, 99 percent of it since Deere took over the sponsorship. This year’s Wednesday pro-am will feature a new and different element. Normally, the defending champion plays in a group headed by the CEO of John Deere. Not this year. Instead CEO John May won’t be playing, he’ll be caddying for one of Deere’s essential workers who won a contest in which she explained why she wanted to play in the pro-am. “It’s a wonderful gesture, for sure, and it speaks to the character of John Deere,” Peterson said. “Hardworking, down-toearth, let’s get it done [attitude].” Players, staff, volunteers and service providers will be getting it done once again, as the John Deere Classic returns to the Quad Cities sports calendar. ### Pictured to Right: Dylan Frittelli

The 6th Annual Junior Cup Matches ended in a exciting win for the Iowa PGA. The Junior Cup Matches were held at the Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa where the Iowa PGA dominated the Gateway PGA 26.5 to 5.5. The Iowa PGA was excited at capturing their first ever Junior Cup Matches. Congratulations to the Iowa PGA! The Junior Cup Matches are a Ryder Cup Style event, which features members of the Iowa PGA Junior Tour facing off against members of the Gateway PGA Junior Tour. The tournament started with Fourball matches and Iowa held a 6 to 2 lead. Next was the Foursome Match where Iowa held a 6 to 2 lead going in Sunday’s round. The Iowa PGA had 14 wins in the Single Matches on the final day of the Junior Cup Matches which they held a 14.5 to 1.5 lead.

Teams Sutton/Larson & Fisher/Gibb Tie for 1st Place in the Pro-Pro Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Elmcrest Country Club played host to the 2021 Iowa PGA Spring Meeting and Pro-Pro event. The morning included updates from the PGA of America, Iowa PGA Section Officers and Board. There was also Drive, Chip & Putt training led by the Iowa PGA Staff followed by a competition in the Drive, Chip & Putt skills. The players also competed in a Pro-Pro event here on Monday April 12 at Elmcrest Country Club. Thank you to our Presenting Sponsors Harris Golf Cars and Under Armour. Teams for the Pro-Pro were comprised of two Iowa PGA Professionals competing in an 18-hole Team Event, one of best ball of two format. Davis Sutton and Todd Larson both of Cedar Rapids Country Club, Darin Fisher of The Preserve on Rathbun Lake and Judd Gibb of Hanson’s Custom Golf tied for first place. Sutton and Larson carded birdies on holes 2, 3, 6, 8, 10 and 15 and no bogeys in their round of 64 (6-under-par). Vest turned in 7-under par 135 to capture the win. The Iowa PGA would thank Tyler Schaaf with Mizuno. We would also like to thank PGA Head Professional Mark Krizic and the entire Fyre Lake Golf Club staff, as well as PGA Head Professional Erin Strieck, Assistant Golf Professional Mike Armes, PGA and the entire staff at Pinnacle Country Club for hosting this event. The winner of the Mizuno 36-Hole Classic automatically qualifies for the John Deere Classic Open Qualifier. Vest had previously earned this exemption due to his third place at the 2020 Iowa PGA Professional Championship. McCarty will join Schmid and Vest at the John Deere Classic Open Qualifier on July 5 at the Pinnacle Country Club.

Junior Academy Stroke Play Event June 15, 2021 | Pheasant Ridge Golf Course Cedar Falls, Iowa – Judd Gibb of Hanson’s Custom Golf won the Individual Junior Academy Stroke Play event on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course. Gibb turned in 6-under-par round of 66 to capture the win. Gibb carded birdies on holes 1, 9, 14, 15, 17 and 18 with an eagle on hole 8 including double bogeys on holes 3 and 5. Tracy Vest of Blue Top Ridge and Darin Fisher of The Preserve at Rathbun Lake finished in a tie for 2nd place shooting rounds of 3-under-par rounds of 69. There was also a team event where Professionals were paired with three Junior Academy participants for a fun team event. The Junior Golfers played a three-person best shot (scramble) and the Professionals played their own ball. The team score was the better score of the two scores (1-best ball). Gibb and his team of Madilyn Duhrkopf, Bradley Kofoed and Owen Smerage won the Junior Academy Stroke Play Team event by shooting a 10-under par round of 62. Vest of Blue Top Ridge and his team of Jackson Bidwell, Reid Hany and Joel Peterson tied the team of Jacob Bermel of Pheasant Ridge Golf Course and Noah Black, John Haus and Robbie Wengert with both teams shooting 9-under par rounds of 63. Vest’s team won the scorecard playoff by birdieing the 18th hole. The Iowa PGA would like to thank PGA Director of Golf John Bermel and the entire Pheasant Ridge Golf Course for hosting this event.

Junior Academy Senior Stroke Play Event June 16, 2021 | Pheasant Ridge Golf Course Cedar Falls, Iowa – John Bermel of Pheasant Ridge Golf Course won the Individual Junior Academy Senior Stroke Play event on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course. Bermel turned in a 5-under-par round of 67 to capture the win. Bermel carded birdies on holes 1, 2, 4, 12, 14, 15 and 18 including bogeys on holes 3 and 6. Runner up Judd Gibb of Hanson’s Custom Golf shot a round of 3-under-par of 69. Terry Anderson of Elks Country Club claimed first place in the Super Senior Division with a 4-over-par round of 76. Anderson carded bogeys on holes 1, 7, 9 and 15. Runner up Smith carded 5-over par round of 77. There was also a team event where Professionals were paired with three Junior Academy participants for a fun team event. The Junior Golfers played a three-person shambles and the Professionals played their own ball. The team score was two best balls of four. Jeff Smith of Harvest Point Golf Course and his team of David Abbott, Nate McGarry and Gabe Kramer won the Junior Academy Senior Stroke Play Team event by shooting a 7-under par round of 137. Bermel and his team of Reid Hany, Izzy Staudt and Shaylin Munson were runner up shooting 6-under par rounds of 138. 41st Annual Junior Golf Academy June 13-17, 2021 | Phesant Ridge Golf Course
Cedar Falls, Iowa – The 41st Annual Iowa PGA Junior Golf Academy is traditionally a 5-day, 4-night premier golf camp scheduled to be held Sunday, June 13 through Thursday, June 17 at Pheasant Ridge GC and the University of Northern Iowa. The Iowa PGA plans to host this year’s camp at UNI and Pheasant Ridge GC with overnight component. Modifcations will be made based on any restrictions in place. John Bermel, Head PGA Professional at Pheasant Ridge GC and Head Coach of the Men and Women’s golf teams at UNI, has been the lead instructor for the academy for over 25 years. The Iowa PGA Junior Golf Academy also utilizes the men and women PGA Professionals of the Iowa Section as instructors for the students. Drive Chip & Putt The first of twenty-three local Drive, Chip and Putt qualifiers was held today at the Blue Top Ridge in Riverside, Iowa on Sunday, May 16. The finalists from these qualifiers will advance to the Sub-Regional Qualifier at either Bluetop Ridge in Riverside, Iowa or Glen Oaks CC in Des Moines, Iowa. These Sub-Regionals will be administered by Iowa PGA Staff.

High School Golf National Invitational Pinehurst Resorrt | Pinehurst, North Carolina | June 28-30, 2021 Pinehurst, North Carolina – The High School Golf National Invitational had two Iowa Boys get that invite to compete on June 28-30, 2021 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Dillon Burr from Marion, Iowa has played in our Iowa PGA Junior Tour and Lucas Gunderson of Harris-Lake Park both competed in the High School Golf National Invitational. In Burr’s first round he carded a birdie on hole 2 and has bogey’s on holes 5, 6, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 18. Burr’s second round he carded bogeys on holes 2, 3 and 15 including a double bogey on hole 6. Burr’s final round he carded birdies on holes 11 and 17; bogeys on holes 1, 3 and 12 including a double bogey on hole 18. Overall, he finished 48th place with three-day total rounds of 78+77+76=231, +15.

Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work? Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment.The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
Charlie Burkart Scholarship The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and head professional at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students with their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will continue contributing to the game of golf.

Injured Veterans Supporting programs and services that help our injured veterans. In 2007, the Iowa PGA formed a partnership with Riverside Casino and Golf Resort and Iowa City VA Health Care System to form the GIVE Foundation. This Foundation is a not-for-profit organization to provide a structured golf program for injured veterans.

Swings with Kids This program helps kids excel by introducing them to life skills that the game of golf provides. Teaching life skills including character, honesty, integrty, respect, perseverance, and cooperation. Tri-Golf Set-$700 Plastic golf equipment specifically designed for children in K-5th Grade. Golf Xtreme Set-$1,250 Real golf equipment specifically designed for children in grades 6th-8th to be exposed to more advanced golf techniques.
