Greg Mason, PGA | Iowa PGA | Executive Director We trust that each of you got a chance to continue playing more golf in 2021 or hopefully invited someone to play some golf. If not, you still have time to do BOTH. Fall Golf is my favorite time of the year to golf. Not as many people are playing, the Golf Course Superintendents have, for the most part, completed their aerification of the greens and you usually do not have to fight any weather issues like large rainstorms. And you get to be outside, see the Fall colors and play some golf. The game of a lifetime. Feeding off of Chad and Randy’s themes on ‘Thank a Superintendent Day’, there are necessary practices to keep the turf we are all privileged to play healthy. Thank you to all the Golf Course Superintendents. Especially the ones I got to serve with…Steve Tyler (Iowa Golf HOF), Steve Fagerlind, Ken “Laser Beam” Ellenson, Chris Coen, Dean “Stay Green” Fagerlind, Tom Klein, the late Charlie “Pribbs” Pribble, John Kofoot, Doug Snook (Iowa Golf HOF) and my last one Dave Beik. These Superintendents and their staffs work diligently to give us some of the best conditions to play golf. PLUS they get to see all of the best sunrises, and in some cases the best sunsets, that anyone could see. Next time you are playing your home course or any course, be sure to wave to the staff, maybe even go wild, stop them and say “Thank You” to the grounds crew for all of their hard work. After all, golf is a perfect place to escape the world and play a GAME! If you are interested in the golf industry, you have many avenues to get involved. You can be a Golf Course Superintendent, Club Manager, Salesperson, PGA Professional or there are other avenues to be involved. Please give us a call and we can help direct you to the right place. PGA Jr. League is a fun, social and inclusive opportunity for boys and girls, ages 13 and under, to learn and enjoy the game of golf from PGA and LPGA Professionals. Like many other recreational youth sports, participants wear numbered jerseys and play on teams with friends.

In 2022 we will be celebrating our 41st Annual Iowa PGA Junior Golf Academy is traditionally a 5-day, 4-night premier golf camp scheduled to be held TBA at Pheasant Ridge GC and the University of Northern Iowa. John Bermel, Head PGA Professional at Pheasant Ridge GC and Head Coach of the Men and Women’s golf teams at UNI. The Iowa PGA Junior Golf Academy also utilizes the men and women PGA Professionals of the Iowa Section as instructors for the students. Participants who advance through Local, Sub-Regional and Regional qualifying in each age/gender category earn a place in the National Finals, which is conducted at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before the Masters Tournament and is broadcast live by Golf Channel.

Thanks to the Golf Course Staff!

On September 14th, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America promoted national “Thank a Superintendent” day. It was very cool to see many people take to social media to thank the guys and gals that, by design, many times go unnoticed. And what a better time than right at the end of the long, hot summer to take a moment to thank those that put in so many hours caring for the playing surface we all enjoy. Years ago, we had an event scheduled at Lake Panorama in mid to late August. Dan Wollner was still the Superintendent at LPN and he was a bit disappointed in the condition of the turf that week. He called it the typical “August Decline”. I thought it was a clever term. It encompassed exactly what all superintendents in Iowa experience in late summer, especially when considering how difficult it is to maintain turf in the typical conditions. Now, I also remember Lake Panorama being much better in our eyes than what Dan probably saw (it really was quite good), but I’ve learned it is rare to meet a superintendent who settles for anything less than perfection. To take the term a bit further, “August Decline” could apply to a lot of things surrounding golf in Iowa. The turf, for sure, as poa annua checks out, cart traffic has led to compaction causing issues, or a multitude of other issues. But,

grounds crews and golf shops all over the state are also losing many of their workers to school in August, which means fewer manhours to stay on top of everything. You could also throw in the general decline of morale in the late summer. Once you get to August, most of us have been at this seemingly nonstop work schedule for six solid months, so it’s not a surprise if the energy is waning a bit.

On behalf of all of the golfers who play your wonderful tracks, thank you for getting the job done even when you may have been a bit less anxious to get to the course that day. Thank you for figuring out a way to keep things in line, ready to go, and attending to your golfer’s needs. Thanks to the superintendents for keeping the greens rolling smooth, the fairways mowed and lush, and all of the other things that go with maintaining the grounds on the property. Many people probably have no idea how hard it is in late summer here in Iowa, but as golfers, we should all be extremely appreciative of the staff at our favorite courses.

But then, as we move through the month and get into September, typically the temperatures start to pull back a bit and give us some cooler nights - maybe even a timely rain or two. Then all of a sudden, the daylight gets a little bit shorter (which means shorter days for pros and superintendents), the grass starts to perk up again, and we’ve settled into a new routine with less staff. And with college football starting to kick off and school back in session, that means less traffic on your golf course, which does help with the quality of the turf. . Thank a Super! Back in September, on the 14th to be exact, we celebrated “Thank a Superintendent Day” as an industry. Numerous emails and social media posts were found throughout the internet and it was a great sight to see. It got me thinking though, is that it….one day of thanks. Now, of course, I’m biased as a former Superintendent, and I think they deserve more. Most of them don’t do it for the thanks, the awards, the recognition. They do it because they love it. They do it for the game….they do it for you. They certainly deserve more than one day of thanks for that. Here are some ideas for you that I got from the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association (GCSAA): • • • • •

Superintendents are usually at the course before sunrise, so help them get their day started right with coffee and donuts or any other breakfast items. Surprise them and show them how thankful you are. If you aren’t an early riser, try lunchtime or at the end of the day. Pizza or a BBQ for the crew will certainly send a message of thanks and appreciation for all their hard work. Are you a social media buff? Then get those tweets, insta’s, snaps, and whatever else is out there rolling and thank them publicly to the masses. Sometimes it can be as simple as a thank you card left on the desk or sent in the mail. Hand-written notes will never go out of style, they mean more today than they did in the past. If you are really inclined, put a gift card in there for them or the crew. The easiest way to thank them. Give them a wave, tell them in person, and respect what they are trying to do for you on the course.

This, by no means, was written to make anyone feel guilty. Simply some suggestions from someone who’s been there, done that, and had numerous members stop me or give me gifts throughout the year. It went a long way for me and it will for them, making them have a better day preparing the surface of our favorite game. It doesn’t have to cost money and it takes no time to do it, so join me in thanking all those unsung heroes of golf course maintenance.

John Valliere President of the Eastern Iowa Tourism Dyersville, Iowa - The Eastern Iowa Tourism Associates (EITA) had their annual meeting on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at the Field of Dreams Field in Dyersville, Iowa. This was Iowa PGA Member John Valliere’s first meeting as the President of the EITA Board. President Valliere will lead the Board over the coming months as they push for more state funding with all Tourism in the state. The EITA is a collection of Convention and Visitors Bureau marketing tourism and business development in the Eastern part of the State of Iowa. Following the success of the first ever Major League Baseball (MLB) game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees the meeting and tour was hosted by the Field of Dreams. The entire property is a very special place and the history that was told by the great people that love that field was a treat to listen to. COME JOIN IN THE FUN IN 2022 Participants compete in all three skills (Drive, Chip and Putt) and hit three shots per skill for a total of nine shots. Points are accumulated per shot at each skill. The overall champion in each division is determined by the participant with the most points accumulated between all three skills.

Boys and Girls will compete in separate divisions in 4 age categories: 7-9 years old, 10-11 years old, 12-13 years old and 14-15 years old.

Cedar Falls, Iowa – Ryan McClintock of Short Hills Country Club and Tracy Vest of Blue Top Ridge Golf Course won the Iowa PGA Pro-Select, Monday, July 12 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course. McClintock and Vest turned in a 17-under-par round of 30-30-31=91 to capture the win. Teams for Iowa PGA Pro-Select were comprised of two Iowa Section PGA Professionals competing in a 27 Holes, 9 Holes scramble, 9 holes best ball and 9 holes alternate shot. Tied for second with rounds of 16-under-par 92 were the teams of Darin Fisher of The Preserve on Rathbun Lake and Chris Black of Hickory Grove Golf Course and Jim Henry of Ek Golf and Zach Steffen of Waveland Golf Club. The Iowa PGA would like to thank PGA Director of Golf John Bermel and the entire Pheasant Ridge Golf Course staff for hosting this event.

Finkbine Golf Course | Iowa City, Iowa | July 19, 2021 Iowa City, Iowa – Winners crowned in the Iowa PGA Pro-Junior played on July 19, 2021, at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, IA. Teams for Iowa PGA Pro-Junior were comprised of one Professional and three Juniors amateurs competing in an 18-Hole, Individual Low Pro and Team 2 Best balls of 4 gross.

Senior Boys Division Team Winners Iowa PGA Professional Mike Hall of St. Andrews Golf Course and his team of Gannon Hall, Reid Hall and Carter Vanderzee won the Senior Boys Team Division (ages 14-17) with a team total of 11-under-par 133. Sean McCarty of Brown Deer Golf Club and his team of Jack McCarty, Zach McCarty and J.J. Grimm finished second in the Senior Boys Team Division with a 6-under-par 138. Bryan Luedtke of Bunker Links Golf Course and his team of Jason Runbom, Carson Hopping and Ben Templeton finished behind them in third place with a 4-under-par 140.

Senior Girls Division Team Winners The Senior Girls Division (ages 14-17) was won by Jeff Schmid of Brown Deer Golf Club and his team of Lily Schmid, Morgan Rupp and Brooklyn Lee. The first-place finishers carded 4-over-par 148. Brian Johnson of Elmcrest Country Club and his team of Ava Kline, Addison Berg and Jane Petersen finished in second in the Senior Girls Division with a 5-over-par 149. Brian Wernimont of Brown Deer Golf Club and his team Bella Pettersen, Mariana Lehnertz and Ashley Nadeau finished behind them in third place with a 12-over-par 156.

Junior Girls Division Team Winners The Junior Girls Division (ages 13 & Under) was won by JR Millar of Lake Bracken Country Club and his team Taylor Herchenroder, Ella Herchenroder and Grace Herchenroder. The first-place finishers carded 20-over-par 164.

Schmid Wins Iowa Senior PGA Professional Championship Geneva Golf & Country Club | Muscatine, Iowa | July 22- 23, 2021

Jeff Schmid of Brown Deer Golf Club won the Iowa Senior PGA Professional Championship on Friday, July 23, 2021 at Geneva Golf & Country Club will lead four Section PGA Professionals to compete on October 21-24, in the 33rd Senior PGA Professional Championship. Schmid turned in a total score of 5-under-par, 70-67=137 to capture the win. Schmid turned in a winning total of 5-under-par 137 to capture the Iowa Senior PGA Professional Championship. Schmid carded an eagle on hole 4; birdies on holes 2, 6, 7, 9 and 10 including bogeys on holes 11, 12 and 16. Chad Proehl of Sugar Creek Municipal Golf Course finished 6 strokes back at 1-over. Schmid and Proehl are joined by Judd Gibb of Hanson’s Custom Golf, Chris Black of Hickory Grove Golf Course and John Shawver of Fore Seasons Golf Practice. Alternates for the National Championship are Bryan Luedtke of Bunker Links Golf Course, Jeff Smith of Harvest Point Golf Course, John Bermel of Pheasant Ridge Golf Course and Todd Fowler of Golf Galaxy – Davenport. The Super Senior Division was won by Smith with rounds of 79-69=148 for a total of 6-over-par. Smith carded birdies on holes 4, 11 and 17 including a bogey on hole 5. Runner-up was Life Member Gale Gilbert with rounds of 74-79=153. Short Hills Country Club | East Moline, Illinois | July 26, 2021 East Moline, Illinois – Brian Lorenz of Spirit Hollow Golf Course and Todd Fowler of Golf Galaxy- Davenport won the Junior-Senior Draw Monday, July 26 at Short Hills Country Club. Lorenz and Fowler turned in a 12-under-par round of 32-28=60 to capture the win. Teams for Junior-Senior Draw were comprised of two Iowa Section PGA Professionals competing in a one best ball of 2 gross. Riverside, Iowa – Ryan Cole of Glen Allen, Virginia is the 88th Iowa Open Champion presented by Riverside Casino and Golf Resort on Sunday, August 1 at Blue Top Ridge at Riverside. Cole’s 3-day total was 65-69-63=197, -19. Cole’s final round included an eagle on hole 4; birdies on holes 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 12, 14, 17 and 18 including bogeys on holes 6 and 16 as he fired a 9-under-par round of 63. Runner-up Matthew Meneghetti of Schererville, Indiana turned in a 3-day total of 72-60-67=199, -17. Kade Brown of Marshalltown, Iowa was in third place with rounds of 66-65-69=200, -16.

Coralville, Iowa – The East Team won East-West Team Event on Monday, August 2, 2021 at Brown Deer Golf Club. Teams for East-West Team Event were compromised of 10 best balls gross, on each hole. The East Team was led by Mike Armes as they shot 78-under-par score of 561 to defeat the West Team. The Section was divided into team members from the East and team members from the West. In addition to the team event, the Iowa PGA East-West Team Event featured individual competitions for the Open, Senior and Super Senior Divisions. Chris Black of Hickory Grove Golf Course, Chad Proehl of Sugar Creek Golf Course, Matt Jennings of Edmundson Golf Course and Jeff Schmid of Brown Deer Golf Club all tied for first place in the Open Division. Black, Proehl, Jennings and Schmid all carded 4-under-par scores of 67. Black, Proehl and Schmid all tied for first place in the Senior Division. Jim Henry of Ek Golf and life member Gale Gilbert both tied for first place in the Super Senior Division. Henry and Gilbert both carded 4-over-par 75. Pleasant Valley, Iowa – Sean McCarty of Brown Deer Golf Club won the Iowa PGA Professional Championship on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at Davenport Country Club. He will lead four (4) Iowa PGA Section Professionals to compete in the 55th PGA Professional Championship, April 17-20, 2022, at OMNI Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas. McCarty turned in a winning total of 68-67-71=206, 7-under-par to capture the Iowa PGA Professional Championship title. This is McCarty’s second Iowa PGA Professional Championship title having also won in 2012. Chad Proehl of Sugar Creek Municipal Golf Course was runner-up, finishing at 71-68-68=207, 6-under-par. Proehl captured the Senior Division Title as well with rounds of 71-68-68=207 to sit 6-under-par. Chris Black of Hickory Grove Golf Course carded 75-65-70=210 with 3-under-par to finish runner up to Proehl. The Super Senior Division was won by Jeff Smith of Harvest Point Golf Course with rounds of 79-72-72=223 for a total of 10-over-par. Jim Henry of EK Golf carded 77-79-76=232 with a 19-over-par to finish runner up. McCarty is joined by Proehl, Black and Jay Giannetto of Elmwood Country Club. Iowa PGA Season Long Match Play Champion Sean McCarty, PGA Head Professional at Brown Deer Golf Club

Iowa – Sean McCarty of the Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville, Iowa won the season long Iowa PGA Match Play by defeating Zach Steffen of Waveland Golf Club in the final match, 1up. The season long Match Play was a single elimination Championship. Players were seeded upon last year’s Player of the Year points list. The Championship was broken into an East and West Brackets with the winner from each region facing off in the final match. Here is McCarty’s path through the Match Play Brackets. McCarty earned a first-round bye in the East Bracket of the 2021 Match Play due to his Player of the Year Points in 2020 as the #2 seed in the East Bracket. He faced JR Millar of Lake Bracken Country Club in the second round defeating him in a conceded match. He then went on to knock off Chris Black of Hickory Grove Golf Course, 4 & 3 in round 3. In the fourth round of the East Bracket, McCarty took on Bryan Luedtke of Bunker Links Golf Course and defeated him, 3 & 2 in the match. He then faced Ben Montgomery of Airport National Golf Complex in the fifth round of matches and defeated him in 20 holes. The final Championship match had McCarty defeating Zach Steffen of Waveland Golf Club, 1 up to win the 2021 season long Iowa PGA Match Play Championship. This was McCarty’s eighth Match Play Championship Title.

West Des Moines, IA – The Iowa PGA hosted the NB Golf Cars/M & M Golf Cars Iowa PGA Foundation Pro-Am presented by the Iowa Golf Association at Glen Oaks Country Club in Des Moines on Monday, August 23. PGA Assistant Golf Professional Ben Montgomery led his Airport National Golf Complex team consisting of Steve Hageman, Cory Kamoss and Ron Kotaska to the Team Title with a Stableford score of 28 points. The second-place team was PGA Head Professional Curt Schnell of Okoboji View Golf Course as he led Mike Lamb, Jim Hauer and Ron Coe with a score of 18 points. Teams for Iowa PGA Foundation Pro-Am were comprised of one Professional and three amateurs competing in an 18Hole Individual Low Pro and Team Event Quota System. In addition to the team event, the Iowa PGA Iowa PGA Foundation featured individual competitions for the Open, Senior and Super Senior Divisions. Sean McCarty of Brown Deer Golf Club claimed first place in the Open Division with a 7-under-par round of 64. IGA Cup Team

Marshalltown, Iowa – The 54th Iowa Cup Matches was held at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown, Iowa on September 23-24, 2021. This annual competition is comprised of a Ryder Cup style format where the top Iowa PGA Section Professionals play against the top Iowa Golf Association Amateurs. The first two rounds of team competition include Four-Ball and Foursome matches. The final round which was held on September 24 consisted of Singles Matches. This year for the 54th Iowa Cup Matches the two Honorary Captains were picked (picture to the right) with Mark Egly, PGA for the Iowa PGA Section Professionals Cup Team and Bill Dickens (former Executive Director) for the Iowa Golf Association Cup Team. We want to thank these two as it’s such a honor to be hand selected to be the Honorary Captains for the Iowa Cup Matches. Thursday the Iowa PGA Section PGA Professionals led the morning in the Four-Ball matches and continued their lead in the foursome matches later in the afternoon. The Iowa PGA Section Professionals led round one of competiton 14 points for the Iowa PGA Section Professionals and the Iowa Golf Association Amateuers 6 points total after Thursday completion of play. John Bermel of Pheasant Ridge Golf Course had a hole-in-one on #12 to start the Thursday afternoon foursome session. He used a pitching wedge from 125 yards and this marked his 15th career hole-in-one. Friday of play consisted of single matches between the one Iowa PGA Section Professionals and one Iowa Golf Association Amateurs. The Iowa Golf Association was able to win ten single matches verses the Iowa PGA Section Professionals. The Iowa PGA Section’s Professionals performance on Thursday helped them retain the 54th Iowa Cup. The Iowa PGA would like to thank Executive Director Chad Pitts and his entire Iowa Golf Association staff for administraed this great event. We would also like to thank PGA Head Professional Jay Giannetto and his entire Elmwood Country Club staff for hosting this 2-day event of the Iowa Cup Matches.

Elmwood Country Club | Marshalltown, Iowa | September 27, 2021

Marshalltown, Iowa – Jay Giannetto of Elmwood Country Club and his team of Rob Christensen, Pete Kelly and Pat Ryan won the Pro-Senior Monday, September 27 at Elmwood Country Club. Team Giannetto turned in 31 quota points to capture the win. Teams for Pro-Senior were comprised of one Professional and three Senior Amateurs competing in a modified Stableford Scoring system. The second-place team was Larry Castagnoli, PGA Life Member and his team of Tom Sandie, Tim Taylor and Lee Eft who turned in 21 quota points. In addition to the team event, the Iowa PGA Pro-Senior featured individual competitions for the Open, Senior and Super Senior Divisions. Matt Jennings of Edmundson Golf Course took home first place in the Open Division with a 4-under-par round of 66. Jennings carded birdies on holes 5, 6, 11, 13 and 18 including a bogey on hole 1. Giannetto, Ben Montgomery of Airport National Golf Complex and Darin Fisher of The Preserve on Rathbun Lake all turned in 3-under-par rounds of 67 to tie for second place. John Dinnebier of Briarwood Golf Club took home first place in the Senior Division with 3-under-par round of 67. Dinnebier recorded birdies on holes 3, 5, 7 and 14 including a bogey on hole 1. Castagnoli was runner up in the Senior Division. Castagnoli took home first place in the Super Senior Division with 2-under-par round of 68. Castagnoli recorded birdies on holes 3, 7, 13 and 18 including bogeys on holes 8 and 16. Jeff Smith of Harvest Point Golf Course turned in 1-under-par round of 69 to come in second place in the Super Senior Division. The Iowa PGA would like to thank PGA Head Professional Jay Giannetto and the entire Elmwood Country Club staff for hosting this event.

Pella. Iowa – The Junior Tour Team Event & Stroke Play was an Eagle point event on the 2021 Iowa PGA Junior and Pee Wee Tour held at Bos Landen Golf Club. Today’s Junior Tour Team Event & Stroke Play event included an 18-hole Individual Stroke Play per division & an optional 18-hole 1 Best Ball of 2 Gross Team Event. The winners of the boys 16-18 were the team of Preston Bily of Indianola, Iowa and Nicholas Campbell of Norwalk, Iowa with a 2-over-par round of 74. Bily and Campbell carded birdies on holes 1, 2 and 5 including bogeys on holes 3, 8, 10, 15 and 17. Runner up team of Lance Nielsen of Norwalk, Iowa and Nathan Lesley of Cumming, Iowa turned in a round of 7-over-par 79. Winners of the team boys 14-15 were the team of Roman Roth of Wayland, Iowa and Cael Schofield of Albia, Iowa with a 1-over-par round of 73. Roth and Schofield carded birdies on holes 1, 2, and 5 including bogeys 4, 14, 15 and 18. Runner up team Schofield and Evan Smith of Knoxville, Iowa turned in a round of 5-over-par 77. Lexington, Kentucky – The 2021 Boys Junior PGA Championship had two Iowa Boys get that invite to compete on July 12-15 in Lexington, Kentucky. Jax Stelzer of Peosta, Iowa and Nathan Tillman of Bettendorf, Iowa competed in the 2021 Boys Junior PGA Championship.

Jax Stelzer

In Tillman’s first round he carded birdies on holes 11 and 18; bogeys on holes 4, 9 and 10 including a double bogey on hole 14. Tillman’s second round he carded a birdie on hole 12; bogeys on holes 1, 3, 7, 8, 13, 15, 16, 17 and 18. His two-day total was 74-79=153, +11. In Stelzers’s first round carded a birdie on hole 16; bogeys on holes 2, 6 and 13 including a double bogeys on holes 5 and 8. Stelzer’s second round he carded birdies on holes 10 and 14; bogeys on holes 7 and 12 including a double bogey on hole 11. His two-day total was 77-74=151, +9.

Tillman and Stelzer both didn’t make the final rounds of play as the cut was 146, +4.

PGA Jr. League Regionals Results

PGA Jr. League Regionals Sioux Center, Iowa – The Iowa PGA Section had two teams advance to the PGA Jr. League Regionals held at The Ridge Golf Club in Sioux Center, Iowa on Sunday, September 5, 2021. The teams of Ames/Marshalltown for the 13U age division and the Veenker 17U all came in second place in each of their age divisions. The captain for both teams was Greg Dingel, PGA Head Golf Professional at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.

Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program

How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work? Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment.The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!

Charlie Burkart Scholarship The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and head professional at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students with their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will continue contributing to the game of golf.
