SEPTEMBER TO DECEMBER AT ÍONTAS ARTS AND COMMUNITY CENTRE Hello and welcome to a new season at Íontas Arts and Community Centre. As ever our programme is jam packed with treats catering for all tastes and we look forward to meeting friends old and new as the season progresses. It also marks 10 years of programming and services at Íontas, which is a wonderful achievement for a community organisation founded on principles of accessibility for all, commitment to personal development and access to the arts. With this in mind we would like to invite you all to Iontas for Culture Night on 18th Sept for a special showcase of local talent. Indeed our programme this season features a lot of locally produced performing arts which is a tribute to the talent available at our own doorstep. Here’s to the next ten years of the Arts at Íontas! For the forthcoming season we are delighted to reintroduce film screenings at Íontas, with Oscar winning Still Alice in September. This thought provoking drama about Alzheimer’s features an Oscar winning turn from Julianne Moore. Our theatre offering this season is particularly strong, with John B Keane’s The Matchmaker, Decadent Theatre’s acclaimed Vernon God Little, and Seamus O’Rourke’s Victors Dung amongst the highlights. Brilliant comedian, mimic and Monaghan native (but of course) Oliver Callan returns to the Íontas Stage in October with his sharply observed satir-

ical comedy. We are also really excited to welcome international hit Menopause the Musical and legendary Dubliner John Sheahan’s latest project ‘The New Triangle’ which features Damien Dempsey and Declan O’Rourke. Fresh from her acclaimed performance in the National Concert Hall we are proud to welcome Karen Underwood and her tribute to legendary singer Nina Simone ‘The Nina in Me’. As ever we feature some of the very best visual artists with our ongoing Foyer Gallery exhibitions. Our exhibition in September will shine a light on some professional artists living locally in Monaghan with a specially organised exhibition entitled ‘To Fly and Find’. It’s worth noting that most of the artworks exhibited are available for sale. Thanks as ever to all the volunteers at Íontas Theatre, whose continuous support and dedication to the venue proves invaluable to both staff and customers. We would also like to thank Monaghan County Council and its Arts Office for their ongoing support. Most of all however, thank you, our valued audience members and patrons for your continued support of our programme and activities.

But Alice’s faculties deteriorate faster than anticipated, leaving both her and her family to deal with the real possibility that soon, she will no longer be able to recognize them. Deftly written and directed, superbly acted and deeply moving, Still Alice is an unforgettable tale of a woman dealing with life’s ultimate adversity and her own human frailty. The Misfits
Dir: John Huston | USA | 1961 | 130 mins | Cert: PG | Language: English Starring: Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift Sophisticated, but emotionally crippled Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe, giving what many believe to be her strongest performance) has come to Nevada to gain a quick and easy divorce. Aging, broken cowboy Gay Langland (Clark Gable), she finally finds herself with a worthy partner. Meanwhile, Gay and his fellow horsemen Guido and Perce (Eli Wallach and Montgomery Clift) scheme to capture a herd of wild horses. Though megawatt star power and a brilliant script by Arthur Miller failed to turn The Misfits into box office success, time and critical reputation treated it very kindly. Far From The Madding Crowd
Dir: Thomas Vinterberg | 2015 | USA, UK | 119 mins | Cert: PG- 13 Language: English | Starring: Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen Thomas Vinterberg’s (Festen, The Hunt) eagerly anticipated adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s revered novel emerges features a magnificent performance from Carey Mulligan as fiercely independent Bathsheba Everdene, a Dorset based landowner who attracts three very different suitors. This timeless story of Bathsheba's choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance. The great cast (which includes Michael Sheen) are aided by an affecting script from veteran screenwriter David Nicholls, eye-catching costumes and the beautifully brutal Dorset locations. The play follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn from all parts of the country. Decadent Theatre Company Present
Voted in the top 3 shows of the last twenty five years by the Young Vic audience in London. Vernon Little lives in a flea –bitten Texan town, “the barbeque sauce capital of the state”, where his best friend has just massacred sixteen of his classmates. The town wants vengeance and turns its sights on the innocent Vernon who is arrested from the start of the story. As the saying goes – “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” – Vernon hits the road and flees to Mexico pursued by a media circus of outlandish proportions. Vernon God Little is a riotous, irreverent adventure with a fasttalking fifteen year old who cruelly ends up on a version of death row driven by the rules of reality TV. THEATRE EVENTS AUSTENS WOMEN DYAD PRODUCTIONS PRESENT
Thirteen of Jane Austen’s heroines come to life in this bold revisiting of some of literature’s most celebrated works. Using only Austen’s words, Rebecca Vaughan becomes Emma Woodhouse, Lizzy Bennet, Mrs Norris, Miss Bates and nine other beautifully observed women in critical moments from the major novels (including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma) and lesser known or unfinished works. Directed by Olivier Award winner, Guy Masterson (Morecambe). Austen lovers and the uninitiated alike will revel in this brilliant and illuminating evocation of Austen’s Women. BIG GUERILLA PRODUCTIONS PRESENT Victor’s Dung is set in a farm yard, complete with its very own dung heap, outdoor toilet and rather poor broadband reception. It is the comic tale of Victor Maguire, a crude, vulgar, abrupt, un-PC Cavan farmer who gets a surprise one Friday morning. We are then taken on whirlwind journey through Victor’s somewhat sad and unconven¬tional life, meeting up with many a strange bucko along the way… Hold on to your hats… and your sweets (there may be Cavan people in the audience)… this could get messy. This performance will be followed by a discussion after the show. The heartfelt story of an ordinary man with an extraordinary decision to make. Bassam is a powerful drama based on the true story of Bassam Aramin, co-founder of the Israeli-Palestinian peace movement Combatants for Peace. Written by Sligo based Israeli director, Idan Meir, and performed by Donegal based Palestinian actor, Fadl Mustapha, this performance gives an authentic perspective on the ongoing conflict in the Middle-East. THE NEW TRIANGLE PAT EGAN PRESENTS
Featuring John Sheahan (Dubliners), Damien Dempsey & Declan O’Rourke In 2013, during a speech about his life and work, John Sheahan remarked that "after 50 years I have decided it’s time to put a lid on the 'The Dubliners', but I think you'll all agree that with Damien and Declan, the future is in good hands." Little did they know, that the three would embark on a journey as a group in their own right. They bring together the living pedigree and last surviving original member of Ireland's greatest folk group, with two of Ireland's finest contemporary voices. THE SANDS FAMILY
Having emerged during the heyday of the 1970’s Irish Folk Revival The Sands Family are a reminder of a time of huge marquees and smoke filled bars. Where audiences and musicians went head to head matching stamina with passion for the music. That they have survived into the 21st century is a tribute to their craft and wit. The High Kings are currently on an 18 month World Tour in support of their ‘FOUR FRIENDS LIVE’ CD/DVD package which was released in November 2014. Northern Ireland’s No.1 for swing, The PM Big Band returns to ĺontas Theatre, bringing with them a classic mix of vocals and instrumentals from 'The Great American Songbook', including selections from Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra and other legends from this ageless and popular musical genre. Originally from county Offaly Ciarán Rosney now resides in Latton, Co. Monaghan. In 2012 Ciarán gave up his music teaching job to pursue his country music career and in that short space of time has gained a reputation for quality country music with a growing fan base both nationally and internationally. He performs regularly around Ireland and his recordings have earned him numerous awards. His main musical influences are Vince Gill, Merle Haggard, Ray Lynam and Rodney Crowell. Ciarán's debut album 'Country at Heart' includes his hit singles 'Willie's Shoes' and 'When It's Gone'. DECLAN NERNEY
Declan Nerney is an Irish singer of the Country and Irish genre. Born in the town of Drumlish in County Longford he started at the age of 16 in local band the "The Hi-Lows". His big break came with his autobiographical song "The Marquee in Drumlish". He has a huge following and charts on a regular basis not only in Ireland but in Scotland and England and his recordings are sought worldwide. LEGENDS OF AMERICAN COUNTRY
The Legends of American Country Show is Irelands No.1 Country Music Tribute night featuring the music of 8 of the biggest names on the American scene including Garth Brooks, Randy Travis, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, Buck Owens and Johnny Cash. The show will include 4 well known vocalists in Evan O Donnell, Joe Moore, Rod and Tracey McAuley who between them have a wealth of experience and glittering careers than span over 30 years. Each singer will perform a string of Hits from the featured artist complete with authentic costume change and in the company of a live 6 piece band that will include some of Ireland’s top musicians. Mimic Oliver Callan is the star of Callan’s Kicks, a comedy satire series on RTÉ radio and television. The Monaghan comedian was also the creator of Nob Nation, the award-winning sketch series that came to prominence on The Gerry Ryan Show and Tubridy on RTE 2FM. RTE’s Callan’s Kicks features hundreds of characters from Taoiseach Enda to President Michael Twee Higgins and from Imelda May to Marty Morrissey. Other targets include RTE stars from Joe Duffy to Ryle Nugent and Marian Finucane as well as Joan Burton, Daithi O’Se and Presidents Obama, Clinton and Bush. (A Comic Journey inside the Teenage Mind) Ger Carey is back with his hilarious stand-up comedy show for transition year students. By secretly observing his subjects in their natural habitat, such as leaning on lampposts, in chippers, outside chippers, in shopping centres and sitting on any kind of steps, Ger has uncovered the weird and frightening world of the teenager! Well that’s what happens in our snowy spectacular show where you are guaranteed a white Christmas, no matter what the weather or the time of year! Snow Play is a showdown between Winter and Spring over who gets to stay and who has to go away. Help Mr Green against Mr White in this highly interactive smash-hit London production. You get to make a giant snowman, cover a whole house in snow and have a super snowball fight! This night of singing and dancing will be provided by members of Fusion, Our Lady's Secondary School Choir and The Muckno Singers, and will definitely warm hearts on this December evening as we prepare for Christmas. This Christmas, Íontas Theatre teams up with Born2Perform stage school to bring you CINDERELLA! OH YES IT IS!!! Take two nasty, bullying ugly sisters, a quirky fairy godmother, the love of a handsome prince and a single glass slipper and you have the recipe for a great night of PANTO! Cinderella tells the story of a young girl and her dreams of finding her one true love in spite of her nasty ugly stepsisters who hide her away from the world. Putting their own unique twist on this timeless fairy-tale, Born2Perform stage school is the most renowned in the North-East. Run by Gavin Quigley, Born2Perform has been in operation for over 10 years, with over 300 kids from 5 schools in Carrickmacross, Castleblayney, Monaghan Town, Ardee and Kingscourt. LOCAL ARTS EVENTS CULTURE NIGHT @ ÍONTAS
Culture Night is an annual event where arts and cultural organizations throughout Ireland open their doors until late and host hundreds of free events for everyone to enjoy and behold! This year at Íontas we are delighted to welcome ANA GOG for a rare hometown gig in advance of the release of their second album in 2016. They have gone from strength to strength since their last appearance in Íontas with the release of acclaimed debut album ‘Making Trails’, appearances at key Irish festivals (Kilkenny Arts, Electric Picnic etc), sold out shows in Dublin and international tours in Europe and India just some of their achievements in the last few years. Ana Gog features composer/ songwriter Michael Gallen and drummer Colm Keenan of this parish! Culture Night will feature additional performances throughout the evening, a specially curated exhibition of Monaghan based artists as well as work produced by a local community group. CASTLEBLAYNEY FAIR DAY
Castleblayney Fair Day host an event in Íontas Theatre featuring music, a rare film screening of Castleblayney in the rare aul times along with a talk about local history. The third annual ‘Fair Day’ will be held on September 26th 2015. What started off as a one off recreation of a traditional Fair Day, has now become one of the highlights in the town’s calendar. These Fair Days were held in this small provincial market town up until the 1940’s. Get into the spirit by dressing up in period clothing and be part of a day not to be missed. LOCAL ARTS EVENTS BAD BLOOD / STAY CARL STAY CASTLEBLAYNEY PLAYERS PRESENT
'Bad Blood' By Alan Donnelly and Directed by Pauline Clarke This is a humorous play written by local playwright Alan Donnelly where the past comes back to haunt even the undead. What started as a terrifying night during the troubles takes an unforeseen twist where past prejudices have an uncanny knack of catching up with you, even after death. Blood is spilled but in an unexpected way in this post troubles play set in modern times. 'Stay Carl Stay' by Peter Tolan and Directed by Jim O’Neill Trapped in a stale relationship with her live-in boyfriend, Caroline seeks the help of a psychiatrist and is advised to get a dog. Pandemonium ensues when Carl (the dog) arrives and soon learns to dance and talk. Carl quickly wins Caroline's heart, but such rapture is hard to maintain and the relationship which started so brightly is, alas, doomed to fail. Running a health club & spa should be a relaxing enterprise for any aspiring entrepreneur. Not for Eddie Manchip though! Up to his neck in debt, everything is falling apart and the 'mob' are on his case! His only hope of redemption comes in the svelte form of filthy rich Nancy McSmith who sees a future in naked yoga and is visiting the club for a 'dirty weekend' with Eddie’s Brother Brian. But then her angry husband turns up! Followed closely by Brian's suspicious wife Joan! Followed by the Gardai! Chaos ensues as Eddie strives to keep order among the mayhem. But a resolution to all his problems comes from a very unlikely source. Farney Players once again prove that laughter is the best medicine. The Lough Shore Group are a group of artists who come together weekly to paint at the Washingbay centre, off the western shores of Lough Neagh. Their work reflects a diverse range of interests from portraiture, still life, modernist composition as well as taking inspiration from their local environment. Works in wax, paint and textile These three Monaghan based artists explore themes of landscape, location, identity and history with materiality and intent. Through their sensitive use of evocative materials they collectively follow internal directives, to explore these themes in a way that is intuitive yet measured, expressive and often full of colour. With each individual working to their own directive this is a show of emerging and established talent that both looks introspectively and reflectively at place, process and community, past and present with an imbued sense of personal awareness. ‘Soul Yearnings’ is a joint exhibition of works by artists Maureen Considine and Kathryn Kelly. Working with the medium of photography, the camera here acts as if to give a representative voice to the soul searching and internal longings of both artists during periods of personal significance and transition with the process being a catharsis. UNDERCURRENTS Barbara Craig
Barbara’s work melds visual energy and emotive words to portray events, relationships, possessions that often combine security with an undercurrent of uncertainty. The body of work is eclectic; abstract snatches of happy recollections - bright and childlike, contrasting atmospheric expressive landscape studies which battle between the beauty seen (the paintings evolve from ‘plein aire’ work) and darker memories. “My work is centered on emotional memories… I bring these thoughts to the studio and a reaction to the captured moment tumbles out onto the page in strong and lively brushstrokes and confident mark making. I want my logical brain to disengage and the act of painting to take over … spontaneity and enthusiasm must be evident in the finished piece to engage, inspire and uplift the viewer in its colour and vitality.” Date: Monday 7th December – Thursday 21st January 2016
