JAN TO MAY 2019 AT ÍONTAS ARTS AND COMMUNITY CENTRE Hello and welcome to a new season at Íontas Arts and Community Centre. Our forthcoming season has something for everyone with the very best in Theatre, Comedy, Music, Visual Arts, local productions, family events, community activities and workshops. Check out the following pages for more details. 2019 is looking increasingly like a landmark year for Íontas, Castleblayney and indeed the wider border and South Monaghan hinterland. Declan Gorman our Theatre Artist in Residence will introduce “Identity/Now” a community theatre project a little later in the spring as well as host a series of
activities exploring and engaging with the legacy of JJ Clarke. More details below. Castleblayney will also be the subject of ‘Free Market’ a large scale contemporary art event taking place in the town later during the Summer months following its successful staging in Venice in 2018 as Irelands entry for that years Biennale. As ever thank you for all your support throughout 2018 - another hugely successful year at Íontas and we look forward to having many of you back in 2019 for another year filled with diverse activities for all. The Arts and Events team at Íontas.
THEATRE ARTIST RESIDENCY As well as the “Identity/Now” project (above) which will be open to all who wish to participate, Declan Gorman's residency will see two free events during the Spring. “Wipe the tear, baby-dear, from your eye” will take place on March 29th, the day ear-marked for Britain's exit from the EU. Taking its title from an ironic WW1 departure song, Declan and friends will gather to reflect on this latest rearrangement of history and geography in Europe. Expect poetry, drama, song, reminiscence, political chit-chat but above all a hopeful spirit of solidarity and unity that transcends borders. All welcome. “JJ Clarke Project: Work-in-Progress” on 11th April, will introduce Castleblayney's own Dr Jack Clarke (1880 to 1961) who left behind a collection of photos now regarded as among the most
4
outstanding in Europe of what might be called casual documentary: vivid images he took as a student (c.1905) of everyday life in Dublin, Bundoran and Blayney. The evening will include an extract from Declan's new play inspired by JJ's photos; talks by experts on the Clarke collection; a presentation of imaginative work undertaken by Blayney schoolchildren in November 2018 in response to Dr. Jack's story – and an invitation to the community to take this creative exploration forward towards a major public event in the Autumn.

Set in October 1978 - Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat Farnon as he walks to town and back again. It is a beautifully observed piece, utterly simple and Murfi’s “astonishing acting” has been widely praised. CONVERGENCE
'Convergence is the coming together of certain unrelated phenomena into a particular setting, and as a result begin to form a common association with one another. Thus three recently graduated Monaghan artists working in different media - paint, mixed media and print - are all connected by their works' presence in the gallery, each with their own unique identity, yet part of a wider system, a greater story being told within the scope of both the gallery space and the artists' shared cultural identities.' Dates: Fri 4th January – Thurs 28th February
ROBERT KELLY
SPACES BETWEEN SPACES
“All art is ultimately about perception. I’m fascinated by the interconnectedness of things and through my work seek to explore spaces visible and invisible, physical and metaphysical. My work alludes to a type of visual poetry that emerges from a ‘Liminal’ space where experience, memory and imagination collide through the interaction of materials and processes of printmaking.” Robert Kelly is a visual artist who works in Printmaking, Painting, Photography and Installation. He is a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland, a member of Black Church Print Studio, Dublin and Creative Spark Print Studio, Dundalk. He has had numerous solo exhibitions and exhibited widely in curated group exhibitions both Nationally and Internationally. KATE BEAGAN
Seeing
Kate Beagan is a contemporary Irish artist with over twenty-five years of experience. Her paintings are rooted in the topography of her surrendering landscape, she captures the essence of those constantly shifting moods and the transient nature of light. The process of painting is as important as the subject matter, the layering of the paint and the way it is worked on the canvas using various tools compels and fascinates. Each canvas is a study of a commonplace within the country’s rural hinterlands. Dates: Fri 3rd May – Mon 1st July
KEVIN DWAN
TWENTY 7
AN EXHIBITION OF POETRY BY KEVIN DWAN Kevin is a well-known and respected spoken word artist in Dublin city. He has performed in many venues and festivals in Ireland over the last few years. His exhibition, "Twenty 7' brings together the choice pieces of his work into a single living thing. His vision, that the audience can walk through his book, and get a higher sense of the dual and deeper meaning of his work. For him the 7 represents the beginning and ending of cycles, the separation of the poles of conditioned reality. The number 7 is the seeker, the thinker, the searcher of Truth. The 7 doesn't take anything at face value, it is always trying to understand the underlying, hidden truths. The 7 knows that nothing is exactly as it seems and that reality is often hidden behind illusions. Dates: Wed 3rd July – Thurs 1st August
