ABOUT THE ARTIST
Monaghan County Council and Ireland 2016, we commissioned composer Michael Gallen (see below) to produce a new work commemorating 1916. The outcome of this is a choral suite entitled ‘What You Forget’. Find out more on pages 13 and 20. We are also thrilled to welcome one of Irelands leading traditional musicians Lorcán MacMathúna and his ensemble who will perform their song cycle Visionaries and their Words specially written to commemorate 1916. Finally I would like to thank all our volunteers whose support and dedication to Iontas Arts proves invaluable to both staff and customers. We would also like to thank Monaghan County Council and its Arts Office for their ongoing support. Most of all however, thank you, our valued audience members and patrons for your continued support of our programme and activities. Darren, Ailbhe and all the team at Íontas.
Michael Gallen is an award winning Irish composer, performer and documentary maker. Having studied with Jose Manuel Lopez Lopez in Paris, he has become a regularly commissioned composer for choral, ensemble and orchestral work at home and abroad. He composes regularly for stage, and a new opera, “A Month in the Lock” will premiere in 2017. Recent notable work includes TARDIGRADE, a music/dance-theatre collaboration and winner at the 2014 Dublin Fringe Festival, and What You Forget, a landmark choral/installation work commissioned by Monaghan County Council for the 1916 Centenary commemoration celebrations. Michael is the lead singer and songwriter with Dublin-based band Ana Gog. He has been involved as both composer and maker on several awardwinning documentary projects and is currently Artist-in-Residence in the Trinity Long Room Hub for 2016.

Damien Magee
RETROGRADE Since graduating from art school in Belfast in 1998, Damien has been developing a multidisciplinary practice that traverses painting, drawing, photography, collage, sculpture and installation. His projects have tended to be long-term, serial and developmental, with meaning emerging as an organic part of creative process. The pieces exhibited at Iontas are examples of work that employ visual strategies that were explored repetitively and accumulatively over an extended period. Compelled by a desire to find hidden meaning in the everyday, issues of space, place, time, isolation, fragility and loss recur. All of which allude to the complex relationship between environment, memory and identity. Date: Friday 30th September – Thursday 11th November
SOUND INSTALLATION A Sound Art Installation by Michael Gallen
