Message From The President I recently celebrated my 20th year with the Intrepid Museum – twelve of those as the institution’s president. I am so proud of what we as a team have accomplished in our ongoing evolution as a Museum, and I am beyond excited for the future. I am particularly gratified, in spite of the physical limitations of our central artifact, the World War II-era aircraft carrier Intrepid, by the strides we’ve made and the accolades we received for our access and inclusion efforts and achievements. Guided by core values of integrity, innovation and inclusivity, the Museum’s exhibits and programs are designed to provide a meaningful visitor experience for all. Each year, we reach more than 55,000 school children, the majority of whom are underserved, teaching STEM and history education programming. We have become a leader in access. It is one of our guiding principles, and looking through the lens of access and inclusion, in everything we do, is one of the Museum’s most important initiatives. As a practical matter, it means figuring out how to make the inaccessible, accessible. It means always working to break down barriers so everyone can visit, feel welcomed and be inspired. It means uncovering and telling inclusive stories that have seldom or never been told before. And it means delivering content to our audiences wherever they are – on-site, in schools or virtually around the world. In 2022, we commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Intrepid Museum as a leading cultural institution in New York. We opened On the Mend: Restoring Intrepid’s Sick Bay, setting the stage for the Museum’s large-scale effort to restore and interpret the ship’s medical clinic. An NEH-supported project, Full Muster: Inclusive Histories on Historic Naval Ships, is enabling us to explore and tell underrepresented stories of service, including those aboard Intrepid. The project also critically elevated and broadened the content of our collections to incorporate diverse and formerly untold stories into our permanent exhibit. Additionally, 3D scanning of the entire ship is complete, a first for an institution of our kind. This will ultimately enable us to story tell using the latest technologies to provide access to amazing spaces and places within the Museum that visitors will never be able to visit physically. We have several exciting new endeavors on the horizon that intersect the historic with the modern and futuristic. Over the next several years we will restore the 7,000 square foot space sick bay for visitors. By using augmented and virtual reality, we will be able to offer our audiences immersive experiences, whether onsite at the Museum or digitally across the globe, so they can no only see what life was like aboard ship, but live it for themselves. And soon, places we can never open to the public – the engine room, the boiler room - will be virtually accessible for all to experience. In the pages that follow you will learn more about our undertakings and accomplishments over the past two years, as well as the dedicated individuals who are the heartbeat of this extraordinary place. 2022 Marks Museum’s 40th Anniversary The Intrepid Museum holds a special place in New York City’s cultural landscape. Founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the storied WWII aircraft carrier Intrepid—a National Historic Landmark and the centerpiece of the collection—the Museum educates and entertains visitors of all ages from all around the world. Its dynamic exhibitions exemplify the intersection of history and innovation to reveal the stories of the people who made history, and the technology that made possible some of the most extraordinary and historic accomplishments of the 20th century.

The Museum was founded as a nonprofit educational institution by New York real estate icon and philanthropist Zachary Fisher and his wife Elizabeth. The Fishers strongly believed in our nation’s responsibility to honor the men and women who served in the armed forces and their families, while educating children and the general public about history and innovation. 2 | 40 YEARS OF HISTORY & INNOVATION

2010s Audiences were able to also join in the celebration by sharing their photo memories of the Intrepid Museum using #INTREPID40. A photo gallery was incorporated into the Museum’s website and social channels, and displayed throughout the complex.

Throughout 2022, the Museum celebrated its remarkable 40-year history with a retrospective photo exhibit, a preview of future restoration of historic spaces on Intrepid, content across its digital platforms, and special in-person and virtual public and educational programming. On the Mend: Restoring Intrepid’s Sick Bay opens

Working on board an aircraft carrier was physically demanding and sometimes dangerous. Day after day, a steady stream of sick and injured crew members visited Intrepid’s medical clinic, called sick bay. The temporary exhibition On the Mend: Restoring Intrepid’s Sick Bay, which opened to the public in March, examines the history of medical care on the ship while also illuminating the Museum’s current efforts to open the ship’s sick bay to visitors. The exhibition shares oral histories, and develops 3D scans of the space to make it more accessible to all visitors. It represented the first phase of a longterm, large-scale project to restore, interpret and open Intrepid’s sick bay.

On the Mend brings key stories of sick bay to our visitors and illustrates the plans that we have to refurbish the actual space on the aircraft carrier, a site of incredible living history telling important stories.

Museum Embarks on Groundbreaking 3D Scanning Project Much of the aircraft carrier Intrepid will never physically be accessible to the public for a variety of reasons and obstacles.

To make it more available to visitors, the Intrepid Museum has set out to create access to these spaces and the entire ship through a collaboration with FARO, the global leader in 3D measurement, imaging and realization solutions.

Over the past several years, more than 90 percent of the ship has been scanned. While future uses of the images are still being contemplated, the possibilities are endless including making almost the entire ship and the environment in which its crew members worked and lived virtually accessible. The project is partially funded through a competitive federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under its special initiative, Museums Empowered. This 18-month project, Organizing the Past/Presenting the Future, allows the Museum to fully optimize the use of 3D scans of approximately 500,000 square feet of Intrepid’s open and closed spaces. 6 | 40 YEARS OF HISTORY & INNOVATION

Full Muster Project Helps Museum Tell Diverse Stories of Service The Intrepid Museum was awarded a competitive federal grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) under its agency-wide, American Rescue Plan to support Full Muster: Inclusive Histories on Historic Naval Ships.

Full Muster is resulting in three products to supports its objectives: 1) a shared inventory of relevant collections from participating museums, 2) new education resource sets and 3) new interpretive content on the Intrepid Museum’s free accessible mobile guide, which offers engaging content and facilitates navigation around the Museum. These resources and content are being shared with the broader ship museum community, expanding the capacity of museums across the U.S. to explore the contributions and complexities surrounding military service. Online Database Expands Accessibility to Artifacts and Archives Striving to make history more accessible, the Museum’s website now provides access to a portion of its 20,000 artifacts and archives, with new items continually being added.

Inside the Intrepid, Growler, Enterprise and Concorde collections, visitors will find cruise books, photos, letters archival images, patches, crew member personal items, including those that are rarely exhibited and never seen by the public. The database houses the Museum’s Oral History Project, where firsthand stories from those who served on board these historic vessels and aircraft are recorded and preserved.

Skyray Comes Home A Douglas F4D Skyray, that flew from Intrepid during the Cold War, returned home to the carrier in July 2021.

The Skyray, named for the unique shape of its wing (which resembles a manta ray), went into operation with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in 1956. It was designed to be a high-altitude fleet protection interceptor, fast enough to catch and neutralize an approaching enemy bomber flying at 500 knots. Skyrays set many speed and time-to-climb records in their day as they were able to reach supersonic speeds. It took 11 months for the Museum’s restoration team to preserve the historic aircraft, which was transported to the Museum in a multi-step journey over land and sea. Skyray’s acquisition was made possible by the estate of Margaret F. “Peggy” Donovan, a longtime Museum volunteer and supporter.

Kids Week a Success Virtually and In-Person

Due to Covid restrictions in February 2021, Kids Week went virtual. Families and children of all ages and interests tuned in for dozens of fun online activities based around three themes - Space & Science, Music & Arts, and Safari & Nature. All events were livestreamed on twitch.tv and available on the Museum’s Facebook and Twitter channels. In February 2022, onsite activities were back, full STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts & math) ahead. Kids participated in fun-filled activities highlighted by three days of hands-on programming from NASA, including full-scale models of the Mars Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter.

The Intrepid Museum’s Salute to Freedom gala recognizes extraordinary leadership and honors the brave men and women who serve in defense of our nation. Support from the gala makes possible educational experiences for more than 50,000 students each year, dynamic STEM content, free programs for veterans and military families, exhibitions that present stories of bravery and innovation, and the preservation of the historic artifacts and collections in the Museum’s care. The gala is held annually the Thursday before Memorial Day. Due to Covid, the 2021 event was held November 10, preceding Veterans Day. Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Grammy award-winning musical artist and humanitarian Jon Bon Jovi received the 2021 Intrepid Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as Chairman of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation. iHeartMedia, Inc. and its CEO Bob Pittman received the 2021 Intrepid Salute Award. Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, presented the inaugural Intrepid Valor Award to five service members, veterans and military families living with the invisible wounds of war. General Dynamics was honored with the Intrepid Salute Award at the 2022 Salute to Freedom gala. Robert Smith, Executive Vice President of Marine Systems accepted the award on the company’s behalf. Academy Award-winning actor, director, producer and philanthropist Denzel Washington received the 2022 Intrepid Lifetime Achievement Award.

Amy Bauernschmidt, commanding officer of USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), was presented with the Intrepid Unstoppable Woman Leadership Award in recognition of her extraordinary achievements and dedication to shaping future innovators.

Museum Serves as Hub for Return of In-Person Fleet Week

Fleet Week, run steadily since 1984 and one of the city’s cherished traditions honoring the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps, was held virtually the previous two years due to the pandemic. But the Museum was the centerpiece for the in-person return, with some 3,000 sailors flooding into the city and thousands of other visitors learning what a life of service is like. Visitors explored a variety of hands-on activities and interactive displays from the U.S. Marines, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force, USO, American Legion, American Red Cross, and LEGOLAND, and also met former Intrepid crew members.

Admiral Daryl Caudle, commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command, summed up the significance of the ceremony’s location:

Other attractions included USS Bataan, an amphibious assault ship and the largest visiting ship, docked at Pier 88. Also docking nearby was the HMS Protector, a Royal Navy ship visiting from the UK. Highlights of the weeklong activities included the Museum’s annual Salute to Freedom gala, and its annual Memorial Day ceremony. The ceremony featured remarks by New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and several military leaders followed by the laying of four ceremonial wreaths in honor of the fallen, and a flyover by Navy fighter jets in the Missing Man formation.

Scores of military veterans, including Intrepid former crew members, attended the Museum’s annual Veterans Day ceremony in 2022, paying tribute to our nation’s war heroes, past and present. Remarks were offered by Rear Admiral Christopher Gray, USN, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic; James Hendon, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Veterans’ Services; and Intrepid Museum Co-Chairmen Ken Fisher and Bruce Mosler.

The Museum welcomed families of Pearl Harbor survivors to remember that day of infamy that led to the United States’ entry in World War II.

As Dec. 7, 2021 marked the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Museum honored the 2,403 civilians and service members who lost their lives with a ceremony and annual wreath-laying in the Hudson River. It also marked the first year no living survivors attended the ceremony. Michael Galella gave an emotional speech about his father, who survived the attack that fateful day. Unfortunately, Armando “Chick” Gallela, one of the last Pearl Harbor veterans who regularly attended the ceremonies, died at age 100.
