The 2013 Genoa International Boat Show Companies are looking forward to the 2013 International Boat show being held at Genoa from October 2nd-6th. Participants of the last Board of Directors meeting expressed approval for the realization of an event largely in line with both the demands manifested by boat owners and the changing conditions of the market. Particular satisfaction was expressed toward the new element characterizing the layout of the event, including a valorization of the exhibition areas at sea. Similar appreciation was manifested for the shortening of the fair from nine to five days. Both solutions contribute to a significant reduction in participation costs of exhibitors, both directly and indirectly, thereby responding to one of the principal demands raised in past years by nautical entrepreneurs.

Suzuki
After its release in Spring 2012, the yacht shaped its course for a summer cruise to Norway followed by a winter cruise in the Caribbean. It’s a classic style yacht that can face the roughest adventures in the seas of the world. It’s 37.33 meter long and 7.48 m wide, a draft of 5 m with the keel down , 3 m when the keel is up. The main mast is 48 m high and the sail area is 781 mq. It has three guest cabins , a master cabin and two cabins for the crew.
Outboard Range
Vripack
This range goes from 2.5 to 300 HP and it is easy to find the ideal motor for every need of the yachtsman. Until next July 31st, choosing Suzuki means taking advantage of the promotional campaign underway starting from the beginning of the year, which envisages the financing of a sum going from a minimum of 1,100 euros up to a maximum of 12,000 euros, for the purchase of each motor, at zero interest (Tan 0 and Taeg 0). Installments are at 18, 24 and 30 months, with payment beginning one month after purchase.
The high degree of innovation in the design as well as cooperation between Vripack and Braveheart Shipping might be unique but also essential to make sure the Javelin 22.22 is able to perform her duties at sea. Driven by two 1300 HP Caterpillar engines, it operates extremely well at high speed. Sailing under the strict laws of the Dutch flag and suitable for 12 passengers, Vripack engineers arranged a dedicated room for computers to process measurement data, four double cabins, a crew mess, a second steering position aft and an all glass cockpit with complete 360 degree visibility. The maximum speed is 25 knots.

Suzuki SR19 enters into planning between 3,000 and 3,500 rpm/m, reaching 3,850 rpm/m economical cruising speed, the ideal asset, with consumption lower than 7lt/h and a velocity of almost 15 knots. The maximum velocity is 28.5 knots. With the Suzuki Mako 58, slightly higher energy is needed to obtain the same speed, and with similar velocity, an small increase in consumption is observed. With the VTR Vshaped hull, the vessel offers many advantages such as a greater stability, but obviously this is set off with less power. The Suzuki SR19 vessel is more slender and also benefits from a motor in a more external position, which helps entering into the state of planning and maintaining the gears at sustained velocity.

Shark Fame
The Marian Trench:how many organisms?
The appetite of the great white shark (the terrifying protagonist of the film series Jaws) is much larger than what was believed until now by scientists, a conclusion reached by an Australia study, which also debunks the widespread belief that the biggest predator of the sea can survive for long periods on an empty stomach. Scientists of the Institute for Marine and Arctic Studies of the University of Tasmania attached GPS systems to twelve great white sharks on Neptune Island off the coast of southern Australia, to register with what speed they swam, and on this basis, calculate their metabolism and energy needs. “The only previous studies on this topic, conducted in the United States in the early 1980s, suggested that a white shark weighing a metric ton could survive on a 30 kilogram meal for about a month and a half. Nevertheless, our study indicated that a similar meal provides energy for a much shorter period, between 13 and 15 days – writes the manager of the Jayson Semmens studio, in the magazine Scientific Reports. Their metabolic rate is much more rapid than what was previously believed.” These findings regarding the energy needs of apex predators at risk of extinction are of critical importance in understanding their role in the ecosystem and the implications of a reduction in their numbers.
In one of the most inaccessible places on the planet: 11 kilometers deep with a pressure one thousand times greater than that on the surface, there is unexpected bacterial activity, ten times richer than that of the surrounding ocean floor which is less deep. This bacteria, which lives in extreme conditions, is fed by a flux of organic material which sinks as a result of frequent earthquakes in the area. This trench was discovered by an international mission who sent a sophisticated robot (four meters tall with a weight of 600 kg) to the floor of the Challenger Deep, the deepest point of the trench. This was followed by the immersion of the robot in the Japan Trench, at 9,000 meters deep, and plans are currently underway to send the robot to the Kermadec-Tonga Trench (at 10,800 meters deep), close to the island of Fiji.

A “giant”swimmer in danger The Mekong giant catfish, that can reach up to three meters in length and weigh up to three kilograms, giant “swimmer” and accustomed to traveling hundreds of kilometers to lay his eggs, is in danger. Laos actually decided to construct a hydroelectric dam in the Xayaburi valley on the Mekong river, to be
completed by 2019, and this will interrupt the normal transit which has always gone on, putting in serious danger the ability of the involved species to reproduce, particularly for the giant cat fish, which from Tonle Sap lake, in Cambodia, goes to lay his eggs close to Chiang Kong, in northern Thailand, passing the Xayaburi valley, in the Northern Laos.

Good News The countries that are signatories to the International Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) – the white tip reef shark, the hammerhead shark and the porbeagle – have approved certain regulations regarding the protection of these three species of sharks. This decision will serve to slow down and attempt to control the frantic overexploitation of sharks which is pushing them towards extinction. The shark product market is a luxury: shark fin soup is becoming increasingly expensive with the sale of fins at up to $135 per kilogram in Hong Kong. The insertion of these three species among those at risk serves to regulate international trade, reducing their risk of extinction.

yard has definitely won together with the team who has worked on this superyacht project, which fascinates and amazes not only for its length but also because it contains the concept of avant-garde for the marine industry. «When we were called in to participate in the design and exterior styling of Azzam we immediately realized that this project would be one of the most demanding of our careers. The brief was strict and challenging in terms of dimensions, performance and technology », said Mario Pedol, promoter and president of Nauta Yachts. « The Client’s brief was not calling for large volumes in relation to the overall length. This gave us the possibility to express our vision of balance between airiness and light on a larger scale. Our lines could stay neat and essential, one of the hallmarks of Nauta Yachts, without overflow, redundancy and massive volumes». The yacht is able to navigate at speeds in excess of 30 knots and to obtain these performances a rational, modern architecture composed by straight lines , balanced and

This 49 meter yacht built by the Viareggio shipyard Rossinavi is a triple-deck performance yacht with a light aluminium semi-planing hull and superstructure, powered by twin 3,460 horsepower MTU engines. The exterior and interior was designed by Enrico Gobbi’s Team for design. “To get clean exterior lines and elegant proportions, I designed long and sleek windows along the sides of the superstructure, resulting in a very streamlined look. In particular, the narrowness of the sun deck, with its big window, combined with the design of the superstructure windows, helps the yacht to appear longer than many in its class,” says the designer. The interiors - which can accommodate 12 people plus 11 crew members - are characterized by the use of natural materials that create a chiaroscuro effect, intensified by marble elements. Much attention has been given to the lighting to make the best use possible of the space available. On board there is a particularly rich entertainment system. Next to the by now nearly “standard” Kaleidescape system for ondemand TV, there is a complex wi-fi network that lets you hold a video conference even on the open seas.

58M Heesen Aggressive and innovative look for the latest giant from Heesen Yachts: nearly 60 meters long, fruit of a collaboration with Francesco Paszkowski who designed the exterior
The 58 M Heesen’s exterior lines take their cue from automobile design, combined with elements clearly inspired by the aeronautics industry. The curved and compact lines of the superstructure descend gracefully toward the sundeck, while the line of windows tapering towards the prow gives a real feeling of speed and movement. These 58 meters epitomize the new generation of Heesen boats: from the inclined area forward of the inclined windows of the wheelhouse to the curved edges of the horizontal lines.

Azuree 46 and Euphoria 54
Sirena Marine presents two new designs for sailing lovers who are looking for speed, but also security and comfort Azuree 46 Designed by Rob Humphreys, the Azuree 46 is a fast cruiser where sporty elements and accorgimenti da comoda crociera meet. The architect had this to say about the project: « We believe we have a boat with well-rounded capability. Azuree 46 will be fast and exhilarating downwind in a breeze, but at the same time powerful upwind in the same conditions, with her long waterline and easy lines giving
her the feel and power of a larger yacht ». The water long is long and the features are simple. Notwhithstanding the robust hull, the submerged parts generate a very low wet surface, thereby maximizing the resistance to haulage and taking full advantage of the “generous” design of the Azurree 46. La configurazione degli interni spaziosi prevede tre cabine e due bagni: quello dell’armatoriale a prua è dota-
to di box doccia separato. The configuration of the internal spaces envisages three cabins and two bathrooms: that of the owner’s cabin at the prow is equipped with a seperate shower.
Euphoria 54 This 54 foot technological sloop was designed by the shipyard with the goal of creating an evolution in the concept of a vessel dedicated to fast cruising. This yacht is the product of a collabora-
tion between Sirena Marine and the design office of the German Frers studio. Euphoria 54 is suitable for fast navigation and comfort with a relatively narrow maximum beam that is positioned towards the rear of the boat, and a bow line positioned perpendicularly
on the water. The design offers a good balance between speed, manageability, aesthetics and comfort, thanks to an internal layout which envisages three guest cabins and a seperate crew area. The deck layout is clean and free of cords and halyards.

thermally tempered with polycarbonate, it lends itself to these specific needs.
The gliding hull is realized with the technique of vacuum infusion of carbon fibers with epoxy resins, to be light and able to reach high cruising speeds with low displacement.

hat good are contests? They give excellence a chance to shine. Why participate? Many would answer, “to win, to get first place.” But the real value of a competition lies in participating, in being given the chance to measure yourself against others. Especially when we are dealing with international-level design projects coming from countries all over the world. Although the two young Italian designers who reached the finals with their project for Zero Gravity came with this attitude in mind, the first selection saw them among the top 18 finalists, and in the finals they placed second. The scrutiny was tough, according to Angela Petitto and Aldo Bruno, both in terms of the criteria the projects had to meet and because there thousands of contestants. But the result was extraordinary and extremely gratifying, when they received recognition both for their “deep commitment to research and for their passion for design.” “Participating in contests is not only a great way to get known, but also a great opportunity to exchange ideas. Not only: it gives you a chance to see how your capacities measure up because your ideas are constantly being challenged.” Yes, because otherwise when you develop a project you are limited by market demands or production capacities that can often hinder you from really letting your imagination come up with creative new ideas. And let’s keep in mind just where the Lotus Prize is held: China, where behind its daunting and apparent mass of con56

tradictions lies an equally massive wealth of potential. “Our experience in China,” say the designers, “especially in Changsha, in the Hunan Province, was particularly educational, intriguing and exciting. The organization was impeccable and the welcome extraordinary.” But the most exciting moment was when the project were officially presented, when Aldo and Angela met with the architect judges, and the final awards ceremony, held in the towering Wanda Vista Hotel.

Each individual detail on board seems to have been sculpted by the wind: the ladders leading inside were clearly inspired by the aerospace industry. The idea was to give the impression that the interiors were not fruit of a well thought out plan, but just sort of happened spontaneously. The furniture is minimalist, but refined, made of carbon fiber and RAL metallic-varnished epoxy resins set off by natural fiber cushions, given a lighter feel by the many windows that provide an optical division between the interiors and the exterior.
Aldo and Angela chose to “erase” the distinctions between indoors and out, so that all spaces were connected. The entire design of the deckhouse is sleek and streamlined, reminiscent of the kind of aerodynamics inherent to designs for the automotive industry. The carbon-fiber hull lines are simple, without even any breaks on its reverse-sheer prow (destroyer); even when berthed, she exudes a sense of speed and dynamicity with her forward reaching prow and inclined transom. The superstructure lines are crouched for pouncing, to enhance her aerodynamics and to exploit the horizontal spaces to their best advantage. The lights integrated into the structure disappear when they are off . Her interiors reflect a perfectly balanced, typical marine design, characterized first of all by a fluid layout. The curvature of the walls varies, undulating in waves sometimes interrupted by implosions that seem to be the result of natural deformations formed over time. There are three double berths, including the master cabin amidships. The twin crew cabin is located at the stern. The materials chosen were 3D Form panels, epoxy resins and polished steel and aluminum alloy trim that highlight the furniture, giving an overall feeling of a dynamic, sparkling sheen, softened by natural lighting and strategically placed spotlights.

The shipyard was founded in 1966 in Pietarsaari in Finland by Pekka Koskenkyla, whose goal was to produce high performance sailing boats of excellent quality. With Sparkman & Stephens he designed the first Swan, which had to be fiberglass: none, until then, had never built a boat more than ten meters long with this material, but in the following years it would have dominated the series production. The first model was the Swan 36 and it sealed the origin of one of the most prestigious shipyards in the world, synonymous with quality and reliability. Then Nautor's Swan developed larger models, all in line with the original philosophy and the Swan 65 is perhaps the most famous, after the victory of Sayula II in the first edition of the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973/74. In the '80s, the shipyard entered a new era with the appointment of the designer Germán Frers, who has since then been the responsible for the design of all Swan models, reinforcing the vital balance between speed racing and comfort.
there were boats as important as the Swan 90 Freya - the 2000th built by Nautor in Pietarsaari, Finland, and launched in 2012 - and the Swan 601 Stark Raving Mad - that had already arrived at the second place in the Rolex Swan Cup 2012. The fleet included the whole range of the Nautor's Swan shipyard, from the historic patterns of Sparkman & Stephens, as Hokusai (Fin), Lianda (Bel) and Swan Lake (USA), to the modern creations by Germán Frers. The competition began on 12th March, with warm Caribbean breezes and brilliant sunshine, marking the victory of Selene for the Class A and Swan 53 Music for the Class B. The route was established by the Committee and included a 25-mile navigation among the islands, starting and finishing in North Sound (Virgin Gorda). In the next day, without losing the attention despite the dance party at the yacht club, all boats were present under a wind of 10 knots. The route was the reverse of the previous one and, in the Maxi category, the first place of Selene was confirmed (which left Stark Raving Mad behind for the second time) and that of Music in Class B, followed by Arethusa. On both days the show offered by the "cruising" class is worth mentioning, with shorter routes (14 miles) without a spinnaker and a rating system called "top secret": in the first two days of competition the winner was the Swan 44 Hokusai. On the third day the two classes joined the starting line and the clash between Selene and Stark Raving Mad was even more compelling, since the first crossed the finish line with only 20 seconds of advantage. However, in the process of rating, Stark Raving Mad was in the lead, just one point

"The waters of the Caribbean are similar to those of La Maddalena in Sardinia. It is an absolutely spectacular location and the wind, changing, challenged us all the time, "says Tony Rey, tactician on the Swan 601 Stark Raving Mad.

During the race today, around the Seals islands, we were overtaken by a tortoise, but in the end we had the best. " The fourth and final day gave other emotions, thanks to a very variable wind, and in the end the winners were declared, recipients of the Rolex Swan Cup Trophy Caribbean: Stark Raving Mad for Class A and Arethusa for Class B. With a breeze of 7 knots, Stark Raving Mad faced the last race of 11 miles with grit and accumulated an insurmountable lead: the victory in the final test combined with the second place of his direct opponent, Selene, decreed the triumph of James Madden's crew. Similarly, the victory in the final race delivered the top of Class B to Arethusa, even if by only for one point. The Commodore of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Riccardo Bonadeo, was more than satisfied: "The inaugural edition of the event was a resounding success: beautiful yachts, excellent condition and exciting races. We could not have wished for anything more. After this week we are already excited to see the revenge during the Rolex Swan Cup in Porto Cervo in 2014". The event ended with the prize-giving ceremony at the YCCS Clubhouse on the Bay of North Sound: the winners Stark Raving Mad and Arethusa were handed the Caribbean Rolex Swan Cup trophy and Rolex watches.

Costa Smeralda Yacht club The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (founded in 1967 by Aga Khan, Andre Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti) organizes races for super yachts and world and European championships for different classes. In January 2012 it opened a new office in Virgin Gorda where it manages a marina for superyachts. The so-called "winter home" has a restaurant that can accommodate over 70 people and a bar with panoramic view. The Clubhouse is located in the North Sound Bay and overlooks the marina with a garden with lawn, ideal location for events and social ceremonies.

xtraordinary and original. These might
be the first two adjectives that come to mind to describe this book which is a cut above the various publications celebrating anniversaries and businesses. Riva, in fact, is a lot more than just catalogue, but neither is it merely a boatyard history, the glorification of a legend or a photo album. It is a book that, in a truly unique way, has tried to give everyone, or at least those who directly involved with Riva, their say. And so, alongside striking images (boats at sea, motionless on the water in stark profile to accentuate their lines, glimpses of interiors, personalities, and even a pair of newlyweds on board), the volume offers the testimony of restorers, collectors, designers, architects, photographers, managers and staff, carpenters, ship-owners (famous or anonymous) sharing an anecdote, a recollection or a reflection of their experiences with Riva boats. There are letters, stories and declarations to make you reflect, reminisce, or smile. Like that of an owner who thinks of the two engines of his Riva as twin sons: “The only ones who make me feel euphoric about living.” And, confirming the people-centered nature of the book, it is not laid out chronologically or divided into years or models the boats, but puts the authors of the anecdotes in alphabetical order, giving equal weight to everyone’s testimony, inventors and owners of these legendary boats alike.

In the preface by Ferruccio Rossi, CEO of Ferretti Group, we read, “Calling Riva boats ‘legendary’ is easy. What’s tougher is identifying the set of elements that nurtured the legend. The rest of the book provides us with 170 commentaries, testifying to how each of the authors, each like a small brick, contributed to the construction of this legendary castle, still in continuous evolution and expansion. Try to read them in sequence and you will see how easily they evoke Riva, both emotionally and visually.”
The story of Riva begins in 1842, on Lake Iseo, when a sudden storm creates what seems like irreparable damage, destroying fishing boats and leaving fishermen with no means of livelihood. A young shipwright, newly arrived in Sarnico from Laglio, Lake Como, performs a miracle: he retrieves most of the boats and earns the esteem and admiration of all. Pietro Riva opens his shipyard and begins to build boats like they had never seen before.

‘Can you photograph the soul of a company?’ the answer is yes ... and here is proof (see for yourself). “This was the challenge - which we believe we have met - that we set for ourselves. The idea was to celebrate the 170th anniversary of the boatyard by creating a very different kind of book from the many others that so many other companies have already produced. And indeed we did: we chose 170 images and put them together so that they were all linked to one another all chromatically. We collected 170 testimonies by the very people who comprised the very soul of the company, because the soul of a company is made up of those who dream up the products, of those who create them, work on them, sell them, and especially of those who use them and jealously guard them among their most prized possessions. Celebrities, princes, industrialists, managers, workers, distributors ... each gave their own little contribution to ensuring that the legend of Riva can now be handled, leafed through, admired.”

Once again "at home" Sanlorenzo’s administrator has come back to the sailing world after several years of absence, with clear ideas and precise plans to "speed up" the engine of a car that already works well, as shown by the numbers Thoughts and words collected by Franco Michienzi

has worked in the commercial field over 18 years; in 1996 he joined Ferretti and in 2002 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ferretti Yachts, Mochi Craft and Custom Line brands. Then, in 2006, he also became CEO of Ferretti SpA, the holding company of Ferretti Group, which he however left in 2007. Since 2008 he has provided specialist advice for the acquisition of companies worldwide. He is going to work with Massimo Perotti, of whom he says: "I've known him for nearly 18 years and we have always had a relationship of great mutual respect, even when we were competitors. This is why I enthusiastically welcomed this new challenge as partner and CEO, and I think that together we can achieve great results". He left the sailing sector in 2007, but in the meantime he has continued to observe its evolution... For about 14 months, from the end of 2008, I had a noncompete agreement to respect, so at first I was not interested in boating, but I used that time to work for different sectors, from luxury jewelry to industrial products. In the following years, I often had the opportunity to carefully observe a number of construction sites, working with several Italian and European investment funds. What is your idea about the weaknesses of this system? I believe that weaknesses have not changed significantly and that the problem of the boat trade is that of not often being able to combine the fact of being an industry with an almost obsessive craftsmanship. Do you believe that the cause could be the lack of intellectual capacity or the lack of high-level managerial figures to support top management?
Most of the time the problem arises from the fact that those who have founded a yard have done so with passion, but without an industrial background so that not all players are able to emerge and consolidate. I believe that among the major Italian operators there is definitely Sanlorenzo, because it comes out from a brain which in turn derives from one of the industrial sites par excellence, as Fiat in Turin was the “great mother of the Italian industrialization, for better or for worse. When Massimo Perotti got involved in Sanlorenzo, he counted on a background and a DNA where the concept of industrialization was very strong. For my part, I entered the boating sector with Norberto Ferretti in 1996, after having worked in two very difficult and highly competitive industries (diggers and construction of objects for large-scale distribu-

tion) where the concepts of industrialization and industrial accounting are very important. In the golden years of boating some managers have come and gone .Today, the landscape seems to have gone back at least fifteen years. Are we perhaps back to the starting point? No, I don’t think so. Indeed, we have returned to a chance of new growth, at the dawn of a favorable period: in times of crises the best ones emerge, who also have a great ability to adapt to new conditions and, at the end of the critical moment, will become stronger than before. Obviously a great attention to costs and the renewal of the range is essential, because in difficult times it’s the product that gives something more to the customer. Which are the match points with Massimo Perotti? I would say all. We've known each other for almost two decades. At first we were competitors, then he started the San-
lorenzo business and I shortly after left Ferretti. Two years later, at the end of the non-compete agreement, we met and agreed on the vision of the market and of business: this agreement was a key element to accept my role at Sanlorenzo. For the yard it is a leap forward and also a novelty: Mr. Perotti is a person accustomed to rolling up his sleeves and to doing everything by himself ... He is not a “centralizer”: he took the control of a yard, he made it grow up and tried to find some professionals who could help him. The decision to concentrate a series of acti-

What do you think about the internationalization of the boat industry? It is certainly a real challenge, which primarily concerns the distribution aspect , wheras for the productive one, it is good to be sure that the market where you decide to produce has a receptivity and for example I think that it isn’t the right time for China yet : it has a huge potential and we must pay great attention to be present when there will be the "take-off", but today I would not build a yard in China, unless it is needed for products to be distributed in Asia Pacific, outside the country. Are you thinking about a new range production? Absolutely yes, there will be very interesting and more attractive boats for the market: the new product is the one that keeps the level of pressure on sales so high and the commercial thermometer always hot. Will you aim at the same market segment? Yes, we will. Our customers love the elegance of the design, so from Sanlorenzo there will never be an "extreme" but a technologically advanced product with a classic design, also renewed but always including the typical style of the brand. Is having a long tradition important today? Of course, it is important especially in a confused market because the background of a yard is an asset that gives confidence to the customer. What strategies do you have in mind for the upcoming years? The level of relationship with the customer in Sanlorenzo has always been high, so we will take care of it and we will make

it grow even more, so as to consolidate and make the link between the owner and yard stronger. In addition, we will try to improve the existing distribution network and add some markets where Sanlorenzo has not yet entered. We deal with quite small numbers, so reaching a market that gives you three boats means increasing the sales of that year by a significant percentage. Will the innovative idea, that Massimo Perotti has had to own parallel societies, and not dealers to sell boats, continue to be considered valid? Actually there are three points: the first is to create and to consolidate the dealer network, already undertaken, the second is the one you referred to, that is, to have some subsidiaries in strategic places. Finally, for large boats the relationship with the broker is very important. Sanlorenzo had a good result both in the last year and in the previous ones and it is in a market where industries export almost 90% of its product. There are other outstanding companies like yours but, despite this fact, we still talk of the boating situation in very negative terms and I do not understand the reason. Massimo Perotti has a great ability to work with numbers and in fact there have been good results even in the marine darkest moments of the last 30 years of the boat trade A second important aspect, then, is that this crisis is very different depending on the geographical areas and there have been places with market segments still reachable and useful; to react it would be good to increase the activity in those markets. Also Italians should learn to complain less and think that not all the world is the same. The boating industry has yielded positive results - Ucina declares that at the end of the year the turnover increased by 3% - but our government is not helping the boa-

ting sector much. Why? Not only was nothing done to help the boating sector, but just the opposite and perhaps actions against this trend should be taken. The boating industry is creating employment, while we tend to think of the world of pleasure boating as populated by "mega-rich people" ... Who builds boats is not a millionaire, and perhaps the millionaire who buys them is not Italian, but Thai or American, so this industry must be helped because it is healthy, brings jobs and has very large satellite activities. How do you feel about being back in this sector? To me it seems never to have been out of it: I've been here for a few days but it feels like I’ve been here for 18 years. I‘ve had no great difficulties: it is a world where I know many people, with many of them, however, I have kept in contact in recent years, so it is as if I had never ceased to work in this area.
The history of Sanlorenzo The Sanlorenzo shipyards were founded in Viareggio in 1958. In 1999 the company moved to Ameglia (La Spezia), within a natural park (the site has the certification "UNI EN ISO 14001" which guarantees the utmost respect for the environment). In April 2005, Massimo Perotti bought the shipyards from Giovanni Jannetti that became Sanlorenzo Spa. Today, the site produces three lines of boats: fiberglass motoryacht with planing hull from 62 to 118 feet, shuttles in composite material with semi-displacement hull from 92 to 122 feet and metal super yacht (steel and aluminum) from 40 to 60 meters.

ivided into teams and whispering like schoolchildren working on a class project, the players were working
together excitedly when one of the called out, “Done!” proud to have led his team to victory. Then it was time for a role-play: a sailor, a captain and an inspector are the characters played by Benetti technicians acting out what often happens to a commander: being stopped by the authorities. These are just some of the activities that animated the 13th edition of AzimutBenetti Group’s Yachtmaster, which took place at the Palazzo Hotel in Leghorn, the city which is home to one of the three branches of the most important Group in the world of privately-owned luxury nautical products. The historical headquarters of the Benetti Group, celebrating 140 years of activity this year, are located here. It was this company, founded in 1873, to officially open the annual Yachtmaster. After a brief stop at the reception/museum, where display cases exhibit model ships of the last century, to fit the more than 100 visitors with safety helmets (“safety first!” is the motto affixed on various walls around the shipyard), we moved on to a 90-meter construction site where the company’s executive staff gave their opening speeches. The tour through the shipyard gave us the chance to observe every phase of the boatbuilding process, right down to the finished product. We could see the various phases of interior decoration as well by visiting a permanent exhibition area set up to let visitors get a good look at all the materials used at every step of construction. The Group, which owns all four brands of yachts, Azimut Yachts, Atlantis, Grande and Benetti, has set up a new Benetti sales and service department and launched the “client driven quality” project, aimed at creating effective lines

of communication and feedback between captains, boat owners and brokers. Great attention has been paid to the presentation of Yachtique, the branch of the business devoted to services. Benetti Group, therefore, is not only about the production of yachts and megayachts, but also provides financial services, brokerage and management and is present in four marinas (Viareggio, Leghorn, Varazze and Moscow). The meeting unfolded with three days of workshops, team-building and round tables devoted to discussing the issues of warranties, lifetime customer care and all the technical and legal issues inherent to running a megayacht, in the presence of top management , technicians and sales managers. Particularly discussed and analyzed was the 2006 Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), adopted by the General Conference of the international labor organization with the objective of creating a single, coherent document, comprehensive of most of the rules, recommendations and principles contained in various other conventions. Captains were urged to express their opinions on the Convention, to point out weak points, in an exchange of views, which clarified certain doubts and misgivings. Repatriation, health care, duration of working hours and rest periods, minimum wage and age of crew members were some of the subjects dealt with in the workshops. “What we really need is a simplification of legislation,” says Michael Wyer, the British commander of the Gladius, who also would like to see a reduction in controls by the authorities. The partners of the event (A / Sea Power System, Boero, CGT / Caterpillar, Dockwise, Fraser Yachts, ISS Global Marine Travel, Marina Casa de Campo, Naiad Dynamics, Open System, Team Italy, Lusben, Rina, Sosema / Shore Crew and Yachtique) were invited to submit their proposals and to show their latest products to the captains.

aving healthy environments and sanitized spaces on boat is very important and, indeed, is the basis of
true comfort. It is useless, in fact, having trendy furnishings, fabrics and quality materials if, for instance, each space is filled with unpleasant odors, or if the sweet water has a “weird taste! But from what may problems of this kind arise? Obviously, from the simple use of the boat and normal life on board: they can be outbursts of wastewater cases, of stagnation of fluid in the bilge, refrigerators full of fishes, etc. The solution for having a perfect sanitation can be ozone, a gas with a characteristic odor present in the upper atmosphere layers and formed instead at low altitude from oxygen molecules, in the presence of strong electric fields generated by sparks, electric discharges and lightning. Since its discovery, about 200 years ago, ozone has always been appreciated for being a strong oxidant, and therefore bactericidal, fungicidal, inactivating viruses, either acting in water or air. Unfortunately the use of this peculiarity has been limited until a few decades ago, being impossible to store it, for its instability, in cylinders: it must be produced at the place of use, since in a short period it tends to return oxygen. But the evolution of electronics has enabled the miniaturization of generators, favoring the possibility of producing ozone for many sectors: medical, agribusiness, industrial water treatment, elimination of odors, sanitation
Ozone does not have a stable molecule and the average duration of its life is about half an hour in natural conditions: this is the reason why it cannot be collected in tanks and leaves no residue after having completed its disinfectant action. ention Pearl, and it conjures an image of a company whose very name bespeaks sophistication: a company devot-
ed to creating yachts whose harmonious spaces and colors immediately induce a feeling of well being and relaxation. If we appreciated this design philosophy with Pearl models 50 and 60, this 75-foot model takes it to a new level, thanks also to the collaboration with Kelly Hoppen MBE and Bill Dixon. The Pearl 75 is not only the line’s largest model, it is also a “lavish floating apartment.” Whether you are in the large central saloon of the main deck or on the vast flybridge, or in the cabins below deck, you feel bathed in luxury. Large windows on the sides of both decks provide natural light throughout the entire day, but also provide unique view of the water. The use of light-colored wood combined with light colored upholstery make everything bright and pleasant, while the archi-

tecture on board facilitates the movement of both the crew and the guests, who can make their way easily through spacious and well organized passageways. The aft saloon is designed with attention to detail and features two large sandcolored sofas complemented by contrasting dark footstools, a square central table and a LCD TV built into the wall. An electric sliding glass door gives direct access to the teak-covered cockpit, where once again we feel the yacht’s dedication to conviviality: there is a large table surrounded by a Ushaped sofa and some chairs. From here you can reach all the outdoor areas. Taking the catwalks you get to the fore deck with its three-mat sunpad and the open dinette. Alternatively, you can go down the steps that separate the main deck from the stern deck, where, in addition to the bathing ladder and hydraulic gangway, there is a garage that can accommodate a jet ski. The tender can be positioned directly on the platform and lowered into the water, as can the jet ski, by means of the hydraulic lift platform. The steps from the cockpit to the fly are not overly steep and are illuminated by courtesy lights. If during the day the Pearl 75 is luminous with an explosion of natural light, at night the lights glow warm and soft and the atmosphere is cozy. Descending into the sleeping quarters, we find four guest cabins plus the crew cabins, all fitted with private heads and air conditioning. Spaces are ample, beginning with ceiling heights, never under two meters. The VIP cabin is forward,

Shipyard The construction of the first yacht to mark Pearl Yachts dates back to 1998 when the head of the firm was managing director Iain Smallridge. The first 45meter models were followed by 43 and 41 meter models; whereas now the range offers three models, the Pearl 50, 60 and the new 75, subject of our article. The active

collaboration with architect Bill Dixon and his studio has meant the arrival of a wave of innovation in the various models, epitomized in this latest model. Pearl’s wellknown collaboration with Bentley is still current, as evidenced at many of the most important boat shows in the UK.
Ambient colors are soft and inviting with light-colored wood matched with fabrics and finishes in equally delicate shades. Above, the master cabin in the middle of the hull. Above, the guest cabin with two twin beds.
The English shipyard chose Palma de Mallorca-Puerto Portals for the tests at sea. The weather forecast called for calm seas with only residual long waves, and sunny skies. Force 3 winds, easily bearable, were blowing in from the south. The Pearl 75 is fitted with twin MTU engines of 1,250 horsepower each, with a ZF series 4000 transmission with a millimeter-precision control joystick in the console. For the test we fill up with about 2,900 gallons of diesel fuel, 1,200 liters of water and eight people embark, including Iain Smallridge, managing director of Pearl, Pablo Hayes, Pearl dealer in Palma, and Phil Bourque from Seakeeper, maker of the control system and stabilization of the hull, two of which were installed on board. The test is carried out from the flybridge and I begin piloting the boat, keeping her at 600 rpm, with the flaps at zero. She gets up to 6.5 knots with fuel consumption at about 12 liters per hour. To begin planing, however, takes about 20 minutes. On the other hand, she is heavy enough, and at 1,500 rpm she gets up to 13.2 knots. Before getting up to 2,000 rpm, I activate the flaps, bringing them up to their 50% position and then press the throttle. At 2000 rpm, we reach a speed of 21 knots and consumption rises to a total of 320 liters per hour. She is so smooth and easy to pilot, that it’s easy to forget we

The Pearl 75 is built with quality materials, both at the level of resins that make up most of the hull and wood used in onboard construction, starting with the teak that covers the floor of the cockpit and fly (and the dining tables). She has a planing hull, and with the combination of the test engines and ZF pod drive transmission with joystick, a boat owner could envision travelling without a crew. This propulsion option makes for top speeds of over 30 knots, with a cruising speed of around 25 knots.

are behind the helm of a 23.3-meter boat. She handles so gently, the throttle and rudder respond promptly and the noise level is very low from up here on the fly. I accelerate to 2200 rpm and the GPS rises to 25 knots. I start tacking cautiously and tentatively, but feel totally confident when I feel how safely she responds. So I complete coming about in a total radius of 50 meters. At this point I face the bow into the oncoming waves, which are easily overcome and I regulate the flap to 70% and give her more throttle. Top speed is 2,450 rpm which corresponds to 29.5 knots, with consumption reaching 500 liters per hour. On returning to port I can appreciate the joystick linked to the engines which, combined with a bow propeller, allows a perfect berth even in the wind.

fter producing some traditional models, Ferretti has returned to building
sporty flyboats. The 690 was first shown at the autumn Boat Shows in Cannes and Genoa. Docked next to the Ferretti 720, for example, its design philosophy is clear: three feet shorter with a lower center of gravity and a sleek exterior. This model is also the result of collaboration between Studio Zuccon, Centro Stile Ferretti and Advance Yacht Technology. Immediately evident are the continuous windows lining the saloon all the way to the gunwale. More windows look out from the fore VIP cabin and the master’s cabin located amidships. The windows are best appreciated from on board where they afford an uninterrupted view from cockpit to windshield. The open-space layout hosts a cock-pit facing galley aft of the saloon. The internal areas as dinette, galley, bridge and living spaces are contiguous and adjacent. Below decks between the engines room and the master cabin are the sailors’ berths, dressing rooms and the head with separate shower stall. These last two rooms are found aft of the headboard of the master cabin’s bed. This not only provides some protection from the noise coming from the engines room but allows the entire beam width to be used as cabin space. The sleeping area includes 2 or 3 other cabins, depending on the chosen options. The one we had was equipped with four cabins in addition to the sailors’ quarters. The VIP cabin was located foremost, while the two other, one double and one twin, cabins were located starboard and portside. The bridge that extends

starboard holds all the controls for the various operating systems and two displays giving engine data. This extension reaches the access stairs under the sleeping area. The support for this part of the bridge is guaranteed by stainless steel feet which allow both to hold up one part of the console and to provide hand holds for going below decks.
The trial The Gulf of Genoa is touched by a very slight breeze and gentle waves diminishing from the previous days. The throttle feeds the gas gradually and steadily. As it is, of course, electronic, it has been regulated to avoid brusque accelerations. The power of the twin engines can be felt
Ferretti 690 is certainly not a small craft, but the dimensions of the bridge are surprising in any case: in width it reaches 207 centimeters.

With so many windows, it is a pleasure not only for the visual aspects, but also helps reduce the weight of the craft, further reduced by the designing the layout keeping the engine room as far as possible from the berths, limiting the need for lead or other heavy sound-proofing materials.

Technical comments about the hull While a bit lighter than a traditional Ferretti fly, she is definitely not a light boat. The baricenter is low, and the layout is quite sporty. The hull has been assembled traditionally, without using infusion techniques. The bulkhead divides the prow from the berths. The hull geometry is variable with a deadrise angle of 12° and spry rails.
as the hull rises up out of the water after only about 15 seconds and she begins to plane. Even her top speed is remarkable, considering she is a cruising flyboat. We reach almost 35 knots, but what’s really interesting is that at 27 knots, she consumes about 150 l/hr less compared to gas-hogging full-throttle speeds. The rudder handles softly and there also the return effect at high speeds. The steer by wire system Ferretti 690 uses can be appreciated, but it still takes a 300 meter diameter for her to come about 360°. Ferretti preferred to have a more traditional system rather than a Pod, with the advantage of having a larger propeller that works more slowly. The thrust is adequate, but the handling a Pod affords is another story altogether.
The Ferretti 690 uses the Steer by wire system which was developed in collaboration with ZF. The rudder surface is kept minimal to limit water friction, therefore lowering consumption, but, more importantly, they are independent of one another, making coming about much smoother.

e tend to think that that having a lot of room with lots
of square meters available, especially on a boat, makes for comfortable living, and more often than not, we are absolutely right. Conversely, we assume that a small boat necessarily means cramped quarters, but this is not always the case. On the contrary, the Magellano 43 is a small vessel, from the Italian-made family of trawlers produced by Azimut Yachts. Just looking at her exterior lines – muscular, compact, sleek, “soft” and outfitted with Azimut’s characteristic vertical prow – inspires an absolute sense of trust in this respect. A pair of couples or a family can truly appreciate how, at 15 meters shorter, this “compact” version of her older sisters, the Magellano 74 and 50, displays all the same qualities they do: no pitching or rocking, no rough slapping of waves while sailing, the
choice of planing or displacement sailing, consumption reduced down to the bare bones, great autonomy, while still maintaining the positive interior characteristics of functionality, airiness and coziness. We can affirm without a doubt that lovers of this kind of craft will be positively smitten with the Magellano 43. In particular, the two fly and hardtop versions make it even more adaptable to users’ needs. In the Flybridge version, on the upper bridge, starboard, is a second helm seat, a perfect location to control the boat from a birds-eye position or to allow family members and guests to keep the captain company. Right beside the helm seat is a large C-shaped sofa, combined with an up/down table, a mobile bar with an icemaker, sink, barbecue and counter-top. The HT configuration is particularly suited to yachtsmen who enjoy boating not only on the open seas but also on inland waters. Its low height clearance enables the boat to navigate smoothly under fixed bridges on major rivers and canals. It is equipped with a collapsible mast, allowing passage even under the lowest obstacles. With the mast lowered, the minimum height clearance from the surface of the water is only 3.5 m.

The hull, designed by Bill Dixon, lets you sail comfortable whether planing or in dislocation mode. The “roundness” of the keel, together with the wide, lateral strakes and a wide bow terminating in a vertical prow, significantly reduces pitch and wave impact. The hull also guarantees greater aero- and hydrodynamics at low and medium speeds compared to a planing skiff of comparative length in terms of floatability and weight. This translates into a significant reduction in fuel consumption, even at cruising speeds of 14-18 knots.

Livability on board is decidedly comfortable. The Magellano 43 was designed with long trips in mind and consequently sports a meticulously studied layout, optimizing the use of all available space. The living lounge invites conviviality, with the galley located aft of the indoor dinette (furnished with a c-shaped sofa to which additional seating can be provided by pivoting the pilot’s chair) and forward of the adjacent alfresco dinette in the cockpit. Below deck, despite the spatial limitations imposed by the layout of the bulkheads and thwarts, the master cabin and guest cabin are each outfitted with a bathroom with separate shower stall. The craft’s versatility is evident above deck, too, where another room can be used as additional sleeping quarters or for extra storage space. With this in mind, the company has created some extremely practical, specifically-designed, roomy, collapsible containers that can easily be stowed when not in use. A winning feature of this, as of all Magellano boats, is surely its dual mode hull, which allows you to go from normal displacement sailing to planing at any time, with its twin Cummins QSB 5.9, 305 or 355 hp engines getting up to maximum speeds of between 18 and 22 knots. Fuel consumption in displacement mode (9-10 knots) is considerably lower, with a resulting increase in autonomy, already quite high thanks to the tank’s 1680-liter capacity.

asy answer, even the children know it. With the same architecture and
more power you will get a faster engine, more agile, which consumes more and makes more noise. All "more." Well, it is not so. At least it's worth making some reflection with data in hand. We have collected the data, there have not been supplied us by manufacturers. When the engines are tested at the counter, they never make terms with a fundamental element: water. The friction, the thrust of the propeller, the boat's trim are all conditions that affect the performance significantly. We had the chance to test the new V8 petrol Volvo 380 hp.
It was fitted on a Frauscher Lido 686. A few hours later, on the same lake (Garda), on a sister boat, under identical conditions, we tested the 320 horsepower V8, produced by Volvo in 2012. The ideal situation trying to understand the differences. Has Volvo added only 60 horses to a previous model, or has it changed it, has it made improvements for a better performance? The "more" that we are all enjoy, are all present. The 380 is faster than the 320. At maximum speed, the difference is more than five knots. At cruising speed, the difference is even more pronounced because it is around seven knots. The thrust and therefore the acceleration increased too. To take all the knots, the time is absolutely the same: 27 seconds. To plane, however, the 380 hp took a second less than the 320,
The V8-380 has an exhaust system protected realized in aluminum, to reduce weight, and the flow of the exhaust gas has been optimized to obtain the highest possible levels in performance. The engine and the exhaust system are cooled in series with glycol.

levels of emissions.

three instead of four. So far so good, but there are also "more" that are not pleasant. A more powerful engine consumes more and it is more noisy. Regarding the decibels, the "more" is not true at low speeds and it is not true for the maximum speed. In these cases the noise of the two units is aligned. The 320 is slightly quieter in mid range cruising. But the most pleasant surprise is that of consumption. If you look absently at the table you would think that the 380 consumes more. In fact it is so, especially if the progression of speed is considered. At the same rpm / minute, the fuel consumed by the V8 380 is more than that of the V8 320. There is however a very important variable to consider. We observe, for example, the navigation system at a minimum planning. To gather this data precisely we give gas and let out firmly on the hull from the water. Then, with a slow and progressive reduction of speed, we check until when the boat keeps planning. It should not "sit down". It should continue to stay out of the hull. On Frauscher powered with 380 horsepower, this occurs at 1,900 rpm, 8.2 knots speed, 14 l / h

of consumption and 74 decibels of noise. For planning with the Frauscher which has 320 hp, however, 2,470 rpm, 15.1 knots, 26 l/h and 80 decibels are needed. It's obviuos, someone might object. With 60 hp more you can plan earlier using less power, so you consume less (and it goes even slower). It is true, then we try to compare the performance starting from similar speeds. At 27/28 knots, for example, the 380 hp consumes about 35 liters per hour, while the 320 hp drinks well 46. Why does this happen? Essentially from the fact that 380 is a new generation. Not simply were 60 hp added, but also a number of technological innovations. The weight, for example, is virtually the same. Indeed, the most powerful engine weights two kilograms less. What is most efficient is the variable valve timing, able to always provids the right delivery to the various gaits. The phaser hydraulic optimizes the lower levels of torque and the upper ones of power. So it could be said that it gives more thrust in acceleration for planning and saves consumption at maximum speed. The carburation can be more or less light and from this also consumption depends. The electronics has allowed to optimize also this aspect, as well as to reduce the exhaust emissions. The ECM 4G, this is the name of the electronic control unit, also allows complete diagnostics thanks to the direct connection to the engine harness. In addition, the Volvo stern drive fits perfectly with the architecture and with this power. And for those who may want to have the joystick on the bridge to make mooring operations extremely easy.
The boating industry is not scientific, it is empirical. You have to try, also to discover that some firm beliefs can be dispelled. Above, the first floor plank of Frauscher 686 Lido; in the round image, the engine room.

An open boat, the Voyager 23S is largely inspired by the biggest model of the Voyager family, the 26S, and does not replace any model in the catalogue, but on the contrary, expands it together with the 21S (another new model), offering an additional alternative for beginners, sportspeople, and anyone who decides to purchase a nautical craft, which is both easy to manage (even alone), and towable. It has high and protective walls that contain accessory pockets and a steel handrail. The console is located centrally and includes oak wood compartments, an electric marine toilet and a refrigerator; behind the leaning post, there is a sink with the option to combine a gas oven on the side. Below, the wood foot stool offers extra support when navigating standing up. Underneath, there is a 240 liter fuel tank. A comfortable aft sofa occupies three quarters of the deck beam, equipped with an embracing backrest located on top of the service locker, where the various tubes and devices are gathered. On the side of the sofa, an open passage makes it easier to move towards the stern, while two large vertical scuppers provide a means of emptying water that makes its way on board. The fore area stands out for its “diamond” design, which improves the onboard living area, reserving a modular sundeck for the guests of this area. The cushions are available in various colors and contain closed cell stuffing. The extreme fore part, as well as the locker for the anchor, contain a pleasant wood teak step ladder at the center of the handrail, usable also as a support base for getting on or off at the prow.
The Test The Voyager 23S model that we tested “wore the uniform” of the line commercialized by Suzuki Italia, having had the opportunity to test it out during the meeting that the Italian affiliate of the Japanese colossus organized on Lake Maggiore. On the stern mirror, there was a nice view of the new DF250Ap, an engine which is extremely generous and moderate in con-
sumption; it was equipped with a 14 diameter 18.5 pass propeller, which allowed us to reach 5,800 rpm with the trim at 76%. On board together with two other members of the Suzuki staff, 140 liters of fuel and the on board equipment, I started the engine which, as always, displayed a low noise level. At 700 rpm we reached 2.8 knots consuming 2 lt/h, at 2,000 rpm almost 8 knots with a consumption of 11 lt/h. The hull moved away from the water at about 2,600 rpm and 11 knots, and at this point the engine registered a noise level of about 78 dBA. From then on there was an escalation of values which changed with a certain rapidity and intensity, and at 3,000 rpm we slid on the water at 17.5 knots with consumption at around 22 lt/h and a noise level of 82 dBA. The three spray deflectors presented on both levels offered a good grip during turns and at the same time helped the hull to plane in 3.6”. This was a result due to both the motor and its power, but also the type of HIS hull which emphasized the speed. At 4,200 rpm and 28 knots, I set up a decisive move, which began and concluded perfectly, without flashes or, a reaction which I was expecting as I had already tried other models of the range. Raising the trim to 57% and then to 76%, I brought the engine to its maximum speed threshold that I was able to obtain, or rather 5,800 rpm, which corresponds to a speed of 41.5 knots, 83.8 lt/h consumption and a noise level of 90 dBA.
The sun deck at the prow (below) hides an area of self-bailing lockers which are connected to one another and accommodate, for example, the safety equipment. At the center, alternatively, the table can be placed. Below to the left, the console has various silk-screened levels and different types of varnished instruments, wrapped in a semiintegrated steel safety line. In the photo above, the teak step bottom positioned at the extreme forward part, also useful as a supportive base.

tested for you Capelli 18 Freedom range needs – and the cushions which serve to complete the first sundeck area at prow. The console is central and equipped with a smoke glassed windshield, made of lifeline inox and a silk screened panel for the engine instruments and check panel. The pilot’s seat is assembled upon a bridge house with a cushion and back rest which tilts forwards, in order to create space for an internal compartment. On the left of the sofa facing towards, there is a free passageway to move to the stern where the engine and two structural control panels are located, one of which includes the ladder. The ground surface is self-bailing and covered with Flexiteek. Something to review, at least in my opinion, is the decision to offer the outdoor lights as standard, but not the 360° service lights, sold optionally.
The walls are equipped with racks, and the width of their borders allows the installation of holders to be able to use the boat for fishing, while at the prow they host the steel handrail which extends until the maximum vertex.
The Test We are in Varazze, and the engine on the Freedom 18 is the 996 cc Yamaha 40 GETL, very generous and dedicated to motorizing hulls under a certain length, even if one hasn’t a nautical license. I am very interested in this combination and therefore, on board with two other people, I release the moorings and leave the dock. Quite stable in water even in displacement, the Freedom 18 is able to plane in 3.2” at 3,800 rpm and the speed allowed by the GPS is at about 9.8 knots. It was able to reach a speed of 25.2 knots with the trim brought to positive for 80% of the ride . At this velocity, I witness a good maneuverability of the boat, despite the fact that it is only 5.50 meters long. It does not waver and as long as there is a small wave at the prow it does not cause the boat to jump. This is also justified by the weight of the hull which is 860 kg unload . With this engine we can also save fuel. In fact, at max speed, only 23 liters/hour are burned, which are reduced to 19 at 5,500 rpm and 21.
At the prow, with the insertion of the half-moon table as a supplementary support base, it is possible to obtain a sunroof able to accommodate at least two people. Despite its five and a half meters, Freedom 18 is stable, even while turning, a maneuver which finds full satisfaction in the complete closure of circles without tailing.

40 Pro is the name of the new boat. She was discovered during the last
boat show in Genova and when she first came out, she weighed 112 kg and had a 40 HP outboard engine. She also has a big sister named Orion. The Orion 40 continues to have much success. The reason? She does not cost a lot, is efficient, and has low-level consumption. A four-cylinder, four-stroke engine with less than 1,000 cm3 of swept volume, reliable and with a maintenance reduced to the minimum. Many boats come with this engine, both those attributable to the Brunswick head office, and those realized by other shipyards. Orion is a stable companion, particularly because of her reasonably priced rafts. F40 Pro has the same DNA. Completely identical: cylinders, shaped, weight, architecture. The Bigfoot base is different. The reduction rate is decisively elevated, from 1.81:1 on the Orion to 2.33:1 on the F40 Pro. A higher reduction rate allows the assembling of propellers of greater diameter. The Mercury range is vast and even envisages four blade models. The result is a greater push, particularly for heavy vessels. Besides pushing large loads, she is supposed to guarantee a good speed and especially, low consumption. To verify if this is all the case, we tested her out on a chilly day at the end of winter, at Lake Iseo. It was attached to the

Hope spring from the north The Finnish nautical industry is showing an upturn for 2013: 52% of business in the sector expect an increase in revenue and 20% plan to increase the number of employees the Editors
Finnboat, the nautical trade association of Finland, has publicized the numbers for the industry’s performance in 2012: sales amounted to 477.6 million euro, a 14.9% decrease from the previous year, but the outlook for the current year is looking good. According to data, sales increased for vessels under 6 meter (+9%) and for boats over 10 meters (+33%), while they decreased in the 6-8 meter (-15%) and 8-10 meters (-36%) range. Imports dominate the market of sailing boats by a 93% margin and most of these are between 34 and 40 feet (10-12
meters). Exports were valued at 178.7 million (-2.9%). According to data collected from January to October 2012, Finnish boats were primarily imported by Norway, Sweden, Russia, Germany and the Netherlands. In all, 5,673 boats were exported to 38 countries. Imports in the same period were valued at 32 million euro (-15.8%) for a total of 2,027 boats (excluding mega-yachts), representing a 12.5% increase, mainly from the USA, Poland, France and Sweden. Outboard motors sales counted 26,746 units, with 60% of these, engines under 15 horsepower.
On this page, some pictures of the last edition of the Helsinki Boat Show. The event is geared to sailing, but there have been interesting new motorboats displayed as well.

Middle East sparks The 21st edition of the sector’s most important trade show in the Middle East has just concluded. With over 430 boats on display and 780 exhibitors, the show offered a lot of events, debuts, previews and conferences by Diana Merlino
This edition of the Dubai International Boat Show opened with a bang, with two yachts being sold within few hours of opening by Sea Boats, distributor for the American brand Malibu, and satisfaction with the contacts made even on the first day expressed by a host of other companies as well. Great expectations, therefore, that the show

Yachts worth 272 million dollars were shown and 31 new products were launched, including a 30meter boat produced by the German boat builders KaiserWerft, a 40-meter model by Sanlorenzo and a 47-meter one by Gulf Craft (the largest at the show). First-day visitors to the exhibition included Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum

and representatives of the governing institutions of the UAE. “We are honored to receive the support the Sheik has shown us both for this exhibition and for the entire nautical industry. Dubai is a major platform, both on a local and a global level, serving as a catalyst for investment and business opportunities,” declared Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO of the Dubai World Trade Center and head of the Dubai Department of Tourism. Among the novelties of the event was the “Made in UAE” pavilion, devoted to the promotion of locally-made products, and in particular regarding the small-to-medium range boats manufactured by boatyards like Al Hareb Marine, Julfar Craft and Ocean Boats. Important discussions were held between major international nautical industrialists during the economic summit, which dealt in particular with the development of the nautical market in the Middle East. As chairman Mohammed Hamdan Al Shamsi stated, «During any boating industry show there is a need to have the scientific element in addition to the business side and people need to be aware of critical issues including technology, safety, insurance, and marine licensing among others. Events like the Gulf Boating Conference facilitate constructive discussions, help forge new links and develop the industry in the right manner between government and non-government organisations, as the buoyant GCC boating industry continues its positive growth». The next edition is slated for March 4 – 8, 2014. Above, the 155' Gulf Craft, designed by Yankee Delta Studio. harbor
Neverland island
An innovative concept for a floating harbor anchored at sea which can accommodate vessels of up to 25 meters, withstanding waves and tides. Environmentally friendly and totally energy self-
sufficient
>
There are two types of ports available with the same diameter: for
small to medium size boats (up to 15 meters) for a total of 600 berths and for
medium-large boats (up to 25 meters) for a total of
150 berths.

by Silvia Montagna Imagine a harbor that, although near the shore, is not land-bound. This project, designed by the architect Luigi Cammarota, illustrates a totally freefloating structure that reinvents the notion of a port which, no longer confined to the borderline where the land meets the sea, can be out on the open sea and can withstand the force of the waves and ride the tides. Being totally aquatic means a port can be created even where the geography of the coastline does not permit one to be built or to support a traditional, pre-existing one. It is a true floating island only linked with land by its need to be anchored to the seabed, which is why it cannot be located too far from the coast. The entire structure is a huge ring, with curved outer walls protecting the water it encloses from the waves. Inside the ring are docks offering shelter to the boats and services to
the passengers. The artificial harbor is accessed by an opening in the ring, whose structural continuity is ensured by a part which remains submerged, but deeply enough to allow access even to boats with deep drafts. The position of this entrance can be shifted to keep it consistently downwind and in a sheltered position with respect to the wave motion, since the port can be rotated 360 ° around its axis, which coincides with the geometric center of anchor. The core of the structure consists of a central island accessible by a large “pier.” Both the island and the “pier” are designed to have several floors. In a dominant position on the summit of the island, covered by a glass dome, there is the port’s “control tower.” The floors below all encircle a central open space which, out at sea, becomes a pool or a natural aquarium. Around this body of water, below sea level, four stories of hotel rooms look out at an underwater view of the sea. The outdoor part of the first bridge of the pier houses a dock about one meter above sea level from which mooring docks extend radially. The indoor area on the same level houses facilities for crew members (toilets and some shops) and for boats (mechanics), as well as pumps for refueling. The second and third bridge instead host various leisure facilities and restaurants for the crews and hotel guests, as well as work and monitoring areas and crew accommodations, etc. The first level, submersed in the water, serves as a port “hold”, containing several technical areas for machinery, technological systems, and tanks for drinking water, fuel and liquid waste.

Jetties and moorings
The fixed and cantilever jetties inside the harbor are distributed radially around the central island and all along the inner circumference of the ring, except in the opening for the entryway.
> The advantages of an offshore port 1. Environmental values are maintained by not damaging the coasts.
2. New berths can created, both where it is not otherwise feasible to build a port or where an existing structure is already filled to capacity. 3. It is autonomous from an energy standpoint, exploiting wind, solar and wave energy and tidal currents. 4. Thanks to its leeway drift and its mooring system, it can slowly rotate, always keeping its entryway protected from the waves, so that boats can exit and enter safely. The same anchoring system allows the structure to remain unaffected by the fluctuations of the tides.
The energy of the floating harbor is provided by renewable energy sources: • a turbine is driven (synchronously with the rising and falling of the harbor with the tide) by the traction exerted by the anchoring cables on the anchor itself; • photovoltaic panels covering an area that can reach up to 24,000 square meters is located on the top of the ring structure and the central island; • two wind turbines are located on top of the skegs; • two underwater propeller blades, located at the entrance to the port on the connecting structure between the underwater skegs, connected to turbines that use the kinetic energy of marine currents and convert it into electricity.
The offshore harbor is intended for an area already well . The project also includes a shuttle to shore service.
