ACCLAIMED VIOLINIST PROFESSOR AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC
ESTHER YOO CLASS OF 2012 ISB Alumna Esther Yoo, Class of 2012, is one of today’s leading violinists, praised for her depth of expression and dazzling technique. She performs with major orchestras around the world and records with Deutsche Grammophon, including her latest album Love Symposium with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Alongside her international performing career, Esther is also Professor of Violin at the Royal College of Music in London, UK.
How would you summarise your overall experience at ISB in a few sentences? My journey at ISB began in first grade, when my Korean family moved from the United States to Belgium for my father’s work. I was one of only a handful of students in my graduating class who attended ISB continuously from the ECC through High School. My twelve years at ISB are filled with fond memories of my school days, inspiring teachers, and meaningful friendships. Being part of ISB’s inclusive international community profoundly shaped my personal growth and played an essential role in preparing me for the global career I have today. I am deeply grateful for the support of my musical journey, not only from the school itself but from the wider ISB community. The warm spirit of togetherness and the global perspective fostered at ISB enriched my understanding of the world and continue to influence how I connect and communicate with audiences across the globe. Can you share a memorable experience or moment during your time at ISB? There are countless memorable experiences from my many years at ISB, but what stands out most is the extraordinary love and support I received from the ISB community for my musical pursuits. I vividly remember performing a concert in Brussels in sixth grade and being deeply moved when my entire class came to support me. Whenever I performed anywhere in Belgium, there were always familiar faces from ISB in the audience, cheering me on. When I competed in international competitions, my teachers shared live videos of my performances with my classmates, who followed my progress and sent messages of encouragement as I advanced through each stage. Receiving such genuine support from my community gave me immense strength and taught me the lasting importance of uplifting and celebrating the successes of friends and peers.
What advice would you give to our current or prospective students considering ISB? ISB is a unique international community that provides exceptional opportunities to become a global-minded person. It is a safe place where one can gain greater appreciation of diverse cultures and also a place where one’s individual interests and talents are supported. Through the school’s curriculum and the many extra-curricular activities available, there are so many ways to explore and nurture great talents in literature, music, science, sports, and beyond. Looking back now, the school environment is the best place to discover yourself, try new things and safely make mistakes! Take advantage of everything the school, campus and community has to offer. Everything you learn and experience now will carry you through the rest of your life.
