often speak of “growing pains”—a good problem to have. The College is becoming more visible, attracting new partners and finding fresh ways to collaborate globally. Simultaneously, we continue to operate with minimal staff and resources. Our capacity has not expanded as quickly as our opportunities.

To meet this moment, ICD Global is focusing on building sustainability alongside growth. We are evaluating our programs to ensure they remain relevant and impactful, strengthening those that best serve our members and mission, and setting aside those that don’t. We are also working to diversify income through a global capital campaign, expanding membership value, increasing engagement and brand visibility, streamlining operations and empowering inclusive leadership.

At our core, the ICD is a global network of oral health leaders and changemakers— individuals whose commitment to service and philanthropy earned them Fellowship. This network is not only our greatest asset—it’s our value proposition.

To fully harness and communicate this value, we must better measure and share the collective impact of our individual Fellows worldwide. Through vital ICD programs, such as our humanitarian grant opportunities, dental student scholarships and Global Oral Health Leadership Institute, we are engaging cross-sector stakeholders to embolden our objectives and grassroots network. The College has strong potential to make connections and bridge gaps within oral health, and collaboration with aligned stakeholders, internally and externally, is vital to the advancement of our efforts. We are proud to highlight one example of internal collaboration between ICD Global and the USA Section Foundation, resulting in $10,000 of aid distribution towards disaster relief efforts in Jamaica.

The future is promising. With careful planning and investment in our infrastructure, we can position the College to sustain its global impact for years to come.

Iwould like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest congratulations and best wishes to each of you. This past year culminated in a truly historic moment for our USA Section with a record-setting induction at our Convocation, welcoming 432 new Fellows into the International College of Dentists. We are deeply honored to have these outstanding colleagues join our organization, and we are equally grateful for our continuing Fellows whose commitment, leadership, and service define the very heart of ICD. Together, you represent the highest ideals of our profession, and it is a privilege to serve such a distinguished group.

One of the greatest honors of Fellowship is that it is meant to be shared. I encourage you to reach out to Fellows in your local area or within your state—renew acquaintances, make new connections, and strengthen our Fellowship at the grassroots level. New Fellows are especially encouraged to connect with their sponsor, while nominators might take a moment to check in with those they have sponsored. Additionally, your Deputy Regent is an excellent resource and point of connection, helping to link Fellows locally while strengthening our collective engagement.

AS OTHERS SEE US

Not long after I entered the world of dental journalism, my publisher asked me to interview a book author. After reading the book twice, I scheduled the interview and met the author, bringing with me a list of ten questions. What followed during the next hour or so was a harrowing tale of childhood poverty, dental neglect, brutal procedures, and professional misconduct. Despite being thirty years into practice, her comments stunned me. I found it hard to sleep for the next few days.

The Covered Smile1, written by Sonja Lauren and published in the mid-2000s, is her account of her childhood in West Virginia, the loss of her entire dentition by thirteen, and her journey to a career as a motivational speaker and advocate for abused children and their dysfunctional families. You’d be forgiven for assuming her book to be a polemic attacking our esteemed profession. But readers will find a measured, if undeserved, portion of forgiveness with an ending that will surprise.

Despite having to repeat the seventh grade, and nearly quitting high school, Ms. Lauren persevered by taking writing classes in college and, at the urging of a friend, wrote a book about her journey. I recently connected with her to ask, among other things, what had transpired since we talked over a decade ago. With great excitement, she related how she had been invited to a number of dental schools to speak, and how her book is required reading for third-year students at some. We both agreed that today’s prospective dental students apply with backgrounds in information technology or engineering, and not with degrees in liberal arts that were the standard of yesteryear.

I asked what changes she’d like to see in the requirements for entering the profession, i.e., that of prospective students, and what changes are needed in licensure. She said first and foremost, students need training in empathy and the humanities if they are to interact with patients in a caring manner. Also, basic management skills need to be taught to dental students. Her experience in medical office management taught her that doctors suffer greatly from their ineptitude in running a practice. And finally, students and dentists sometimes need a “refresher course” on why they entered the profession in the first place. While speaking

with her, I sensed an opportunity for Fellows in furthering the mission of the USA Section.

In Richard II, Shakespeare tells us, “For they breathe truth, that breathe their words in pain.” In my interview years ago, I asked if, in her eyes, the dental profession had redeemed itself. There was a long pause, followed by a therapeutic reckoning with a professional discipline that sometimes loses its way. Ms. Lauren could have been any patient in our chair at a Mission of Mercy, FQHC, or safety net clinic. But she chose to tell us her story, that of a dental patient who suffered greatly and used that suffering to benefit others. In her words her choice was to “lie down and die or make something useful of the pain.” Chapter 13 of her book is titled “Forgiveness”; the Appendix is titled “How to Save a Child.” Regardless of where you find yourself in your career journey, I challenge you to read all 114 pages of The Covered Smile. It may give you a new perspective on why you entered the profession.

Meet our New Regents

Serving 2026-2029

James K. Feldman, DDS

Washington, DC

New Regent, District 4

Dr. James Feldman is a third generation, full-time practicing general dentist in Washington, DC. After earning a BA in Biology from the University of Rochester, he went on to receive his DDS from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and then completed a one-year GPR at the Wilmington Medical Center.

Dr. Feldman rose up the officer ranks of the DC Dental Society, DC Academy of General Dentistry and the Maimonides Dental Society to ultimately lead each as its president. He chaired the 2002 Nation’s Capital Dental Meeting and served on the ADA Council on Annual Sessions and AGD Scientific Meeting Council and became CE chairman for the Capital Dental Science Study Club.

Dr. Feldman was invited to Fellowship in the ICD in 2004, the ACD in 2006, the Academy of Dentistry International in 2001, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy in 2025. During this journey, he became more involved with the ICD, ultimately becoming the Deputy Regent of DC. He had great plans to strengthen the collegiality of his local region, but COVID hit a year later putting a stop to in-person meetings. Two years later he was elected to become the District 4 ICD Vice Regent, and now serves as the District 4 ICD Regent.

Dr. Feldman and his wife, Ellen, have two children. Their daughter is a change management consultant for PwC and their son has continued the family tradition to become a fourth-generation general dentist. In his spare time, Dr. Feldman likes to golf, exercise, listen to music, travel and take cruises with his family.

Jill Colleen Jenkins, BA, DDS

Shawnee, Kansas

New Regent, District 12

After two months of service by Dr. Douglas Auld of McAlester, Oklahoma, Dr. Jill Jenkins assumed the role as District 12 Regent of the ICD USA Section. Jill Jenkins is the owner and president of Jenkins Dentistry for Kids, founded in 2020, a pediatric dental practice with three locations in the Kansas City area. She attended dental school at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry and completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Dr. Jenkins has served organized dentistry in many roles throughout her career, most notably as president of the Fifth District Dental Society of Kansas and president of the State of Kansas Dental Association. She is currently chair of the KDA Membership Committee, a member of the ADA Council on Membership, and chair of the delegation for the State of Kansas to the ADA. Dr. Jenkins is also a founding member of Kansas City Women Dentists.

Dr. Jenkins is a board-certified pediatric dentist, a diplomate for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and is a Fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, ACD and ICD. She served as the District 12 Vice Regent before assuming the role of District 12 Regent in February of 2026. She received the prestigious Women Who Mean Business/Women of Influence Award from the Kansas City Business Journal in 2017, where she continues to actively participate.

Dr. Jenkins has been married to Brad for over 26 years and they have three children. In her free time, she enjoys spending time at her ranch soaking up the beauty of the Flint Hills.

Stephenie Lea Hedstrom Kaufmann, DDS Woodland Park, Colorado

New Regent, District 14

Dr. Stephenie Hedstrom Kaufmann completed her BS in Medical Science at the University of Colorado, where she also earned her DDS in 1997. She continued her postgraduate education at the Naval Dental Center in Okinawa, Japan, completing her advanced education in general dentistry in 1998. She served for five years in the Fleet Marine Force of the U.S. Navy and was honored with several Navy Achievement Medals and service commendations, but recognizes professional growth, personal development, and sense of community as her most meaningful rewards.

After service in the Navy, Dr. Hedstrom Kaufmann joined a private pediatric practice where she cared for underserved, Medicaidsupported children in southern Texas. She eventually returned to Colorado, establishing her private family practice. Over the past two decades, she has served in various leadership roles with the Colorado Dental Association, including trustee, delegate, and member of multiple committees. She also served as alternate delegate and delegate to the ADA.

After being inducted as Fellow in the ICD, she accepted the role of Deputy Regent in Colorado. She is inspired by the work supporting dental students and the ongoing demonstrations of humanitarian efforts by our Fellows, so when given the opportunity to become Vice Regent, and now Regent, she accepted. Most recently she became a site chair for the 2026 COMOM and was recently elected to their board of directors.

Dr. Hedstrom Kaufmann maintains a very full personal family and faith-focused life alongside her professional work.

2025 MASTER FELLOWS

Master Fellowship is a significant honor award conferred by the College to no more than four deserving USA Section Fellows each year. A Master Fellow has rendered conspicuous and outstanding service to the College, and must have maintained active Fellowship for at least 15 consecutive years. They must have served on either the USA Section Board of Regents, Foundation Board, and/or on the International Council for a cumulative total of ten years, but may not be a current Board or Council member.

Gerald R. Karr, DDS, MS

Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Karr is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and received his DDS from the University of Tennessee in 1974. Upon completion of his post-graduate orthodontic residency at UT in 1976, Dr. Karr served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany until 1979.

Upon returning to civilian life, Jerry and his wife, Sandra settled in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he opened his practice. After 45 years, he retired and sold his practice to his partner of over 20 years. He and Sandra have had the privilege to endow scholarships for both predental and dental students. Dr. Karr was also honored to be recognized as the Outstanding UT Dental Alumnus for 2024.

Dr. Karr is a member of many dental associations and organizations and has held office in most of them. He is a founding member and first president of the Eighth District Dental Society of the TDA and recipient of the TDA Fellowship Award and the Tennessee Academy of General Dentistry Humanitarian Award. Jerry and Sandra have served on multiple dental mission trips to countries including Honduras, Brazil, Southeast China and Ghana, West Africa. For many years he served on the Board of the Good Samaritan Clinic in Clarksville, Tennessee.

An ICD Fellow for over 30 years, he began serving as the District 6 Vice Regent in 2010 and moved through the chairs to serve as USA Section President in 2021. While chair of the Membership Committee, he contributed to the ICD USA Section Membership Manual and the Strategic Plan for Membership Recruitment and Retention. As a member of the ICD USA Foundation, his committee developed their current Fund-Raising Policy Manual. Jerry and Sandra currently sponsor the ICD USA Section Student Leadership Awards, which recognizes graduating dental students who demonstrate Leadership in various activities.

Dr. Karr and Sandra have been married 57 years, have three children and seven grandchildren, and enjoy Bible study, travel, motorcycling, sailing, and off-road adventures.

James C. Setterberg, DDS

Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Dr. James (Jim) C. Setterberg received his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1981, his GPR in Minneapolis at the VA Medical Center, and taught restorative dentistry at the University of Minnesota Dental School. He has maintained a solo dental practice in Glenwood Springs for nearly 40 years.

Dr. Setterberg is a Past President of the ICD USA Section and served as the Colorado Deputy Regent from 2006-2013, 14th District Regent from 2014-2017, and on the Section One Executive Committee from 2018-2021. He is currently an International Counselor representing Section One to the Global College.

Dr. Setterberg is a past president of the Colorado Dental Association, an honorary alumnus to the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and past president of the Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club.

Dr. Setterberg has served the ADA as a speaker for the Council on Dental Benefit Programs and on the Council on Dental Education. He served as an ADA 14th district delegate for over 25 years and chaired reference committees at the ADA annual session.

He and his wife, Sherrie (RDH), were co-site chairs for the Colorado Mission of Mercy in Glenwood Springs, the only COMOM to be held in Western Colorado that has treated 1,500 patients and provided nearly $1.5M of donated care. He and his wife continue to provide volunteer care since retiring from private practice.

Dr. Setterberg was a member of the National Ski Patrol for 18 years, serving as patrol director and an instructor in avalanche and mountaineering, and outdoor emergency care. In his spare time, Jim enjoys hunting, fishing, sailing and golf.

2025 Honorary Fellows

Lanette Ann Becker has spent her life turning compassion into action. After more than two decades with the Wisconsin Dental Association, where she helped launch the state’s first MOM in 2009, she found her calling: bringing free, high-quality dental care to people in need.

Lani has coordinated or volunteered at over 70 MOM events in 22 states, often serving as a trusted mentor for new programs. She developed the first national patient care tracking database, helping clinics across the country deliver care more efficiently. Her leadership and vision have reached far beyond Wisconsin by introducing the MOM model to dentists from over 100 countries at the ADA’s Annual Session.

Michael A. Graham is currently the Executive Director of the American College of Dentists. Prior to serving in this position with the ACD, he was the ADA senior vice president for government and public affairs. Throughout his 30-year career in organized dentistry, he has demonstrated a passion for the dental profession, a dedication to motivating volunteer leaders and members, and a commitment to achieving substantial gains for the profession in the federal and state legislative arenas.

Mr. Graham has won multiple industry awards including CEO Update’s 2019 Association Lobbyist of the Year Award,

Carolyn S. Hood, MS, LPC, is a licensed professional counselor, dedicated humanitarian, and tireless advocate for underserved communities both locally and internationally. She holds an MS in counseling psychology from The University of Southern Mississippi and a BS in education from Georgia State University.

For over two decades, Ms. Hood has served as a clinical therapist in private practice and through nonprofit ministries, offering individual, couples, and family therapy on a sliding-scale basis. Her professional work reflects her deep commitment to healing, compassion and accessibility of care.

Shauna Vollmer King is president and founder of International Medical Relief (IMR), a Colorado-based nonprofit organization with 60,000 volunteers dedicated to providing dental and medical care to underserved communities around the world. After Hurricane Dorian, Mrs. King organized a dental relief effort in the Bahamas partnering with Henry Schein Cares, ADA Foundation, Remote Area Medical, Harvard of Dental Medicine, Christian Dental Association and Bahama Dental Association. Her legacy is measured not only in the tens of thousands of patients helped, but in the countless volunteers she’s inspired to keep showing up, year after year, to change lives and restore smiles.

He obtained his master’s degree in policy sciences from UMBC after obtaining his BA in American history from the Catholic University of America.

Mr. Graham served in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves for 21 years, retiring at the rank of Commander. His last deployment was in Sadr City, Iraq, as the Chief of Staff for the Law and Order Task Force.

Ms. Hood has led and organized medical, dental, and surgical mission teams to Honduras and Nicaragua for more than 23 years. She has mentored young people pursuing healthcare careers, coordinated the acquisition and delivery of medical supplies, arranged patient food distribution, and provided direct hands-on assistance to dental professionals.

Ms. Hood has served on the boards of the Baptist Medical and Dental Mission International, Extra Table, You Matter, United Way of Southeast MS, Edwards Street Fellowship, and the ACS. She is a recipient of the Pine Belt Area Spirit in Action Award and a lifetime member of the Junior Auxiliary.

Mrs. King graduated as a fellow in the Global Health Leaders program at Harvard Medical School. She holds a Master of Public Administration from American University School of Public Affairs, as well as a master’s degree from George Washington University School of Health Services Management and Washington Policy Institute.

Mrs. King has served on the boards of HELP International, Disaster Area Response Network, Colorado Flight for Life, Global Village Academy, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Foundation Leadership Alumni, Global Development and Relief, and Bitcards USA.

2025 DISTINGUISHED HUMANITARIAN

John C. Osborn, DDS

Dr. John Osborn grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, where his father practiced dentistry for 50 years. Upon graduating from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and Meharry Medical College of Dentistry in 1988, he began his practice in Maynardville, Tennessee. He has been an adjunct faculty member at Lincoln Memorial College of Dental Medicine from 2021 to present.

Dr. Osborn has been a volunteer dentist for Remote Area Medical (RAM) since 1992 and currently serves as the Director of Dental Services. His practice serves a small rural community that treats a large population of Medicaid children. Additionally, he provides dental care outside the office, treating nursing home patients at their bedside one day a week, and attending house calls for homebound patients.

RAM volunteers erect first-come, first-served pop-up clinics to offer free dental, vision and medical screenings and treatments throughout the country. Patients often spend the night in nearby parking areas to ensure their spot. In 2024 alone, across 24 U.S. states, $14,847,417 worth of critical services were provided by 16,313 volunteers serving 36,194 uninsured, underinsured, and underserved individuals. Among other health benefits, 11,903 tooth extractions and 3,873 fillings were provided last year for grateful individuals. Beyond clinical work, his dedication to the program includes flying RAM aircraft since 2004 for transport and rescue missions.

Dr. John Osborn has served as president of the Second District Dental Association and president of the Tennessee Dental Association. He is a Fellow in the Academy of Dentistry International, ICD, ACD and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

He and his wife, Laurel, enjoy their farm in Union County and have three sons. Son Andrew Osborn, DDS, joined his father in practice in 2018, and son Thomas Osborn joined the practice in 2021 as an administrative associate. In his spare time, Dr. Osborn enjoys flying and motorcycling.

2025 OUTSTANDING DENTAL LEADER

Patricia L. Blanton, DDS, MS, PhD

Patricia L. Blanton, DDS, MS, PhD Savannah, Georgia

Dr. Patricia L. Blanton has led a distinguished career in dentistry dating back to her first faculty appointment in 1967. She received her MS and PhD in anatomy from Baylor University in Waco, her DDS from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, and her certificate in periodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry/ Dallas VA Hospital. She is the first female president of the Texas Dental Association and recently served as vice president of the ADA and president of the ACD. Dr. Blanton is currently professor emeritus in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Bush Combat Development Texas A&M University System, and has recently served as the interim dean, James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina. She has a private practice in periodontics and implantology.

Dr. Blanton has received countless recognitions in her field, not limited to the Hardin Simmons Distinguished Alumnus Award, Baylor College of Dentistry Distinguished Alumnus Award and Dallas County Dental Society Lifetime Achievement Award. The Patricia L. Blanton Library at Baylor College of Dentistry was named in her honor. She has received a Gold Medal from the Texas Dental Association and Pierre Fauchard. She received the ADA Distinguished Service Award for her endless contributions to the dental profession.

Dr. Blanton has established a reputation as a disciplined educator, researcher, administrator, clinicianscholar and community advocate. She is a recognized expert in the fields of surgical anatomy, local anesthesia and pain management. She published over 150 scholarly publications and received a variety of research grants. Her approach to local anesthetic technique stresses the interrelationships between surgical anatomy and technique discipline in the acquisition of profound anesthesia.

For over 40 years, Pat has lectured extensively, providing more than 1,000 hours of CE. She is unique among lecturers today with her educational background and experience in anatomy as well as clinical dentistry.

2025 Distinguished Deputy Regent Jason E. Portnof, DMD, MD

Dr. Jason E. Portnof, who currently serves as Vice Regent for ICD USA District 17, has a private practice in Boca Raton, Florida. His specialties include the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on correction of dentofacial deformities, orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, oral and maxillofacial pathology and complex dental implantology. He is the section chief of the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Mary’s Medical Center and Palm Beach Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Portnof graduated with honors from the Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale. He also earned an MD from Weill Cornell Medical College in NYC where he trained in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He received fellowship training in pediatric maxillofacial surgery/craniomaxillofacial surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Portnof serves as vice president of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and is a board examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is past president of the Florida Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association and the Florida Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is the current president of the Palm Beach County Dental Association and the second vice president of the Atlantic Coast District Dental Association.

am pleased to welcome all the New Fellows and their loved ones to the ICD family. Today’s ceremony is about you, your wonderful honorable careers in dentistry, your outstanding service and performance. Congratulations for being found to be worthy of the great honor of ICD Fellowship!

I am going to depart from that reality a bit and tell you about my own life-altering journey. A little over two years ago, after a lifetime of excellent health I was diagnosed with cancer. I learned of my diagnosis by reading my pathology report on a laptop on a Sunday morning while in bed with my wife Lisa. It had all the words you don’t want to hear: Stage 4. Metastatic to 13 separate bony sites including 4 vertebrae. Adenocarcinoma of the prostate. Number 2 cause of cancer deaths in males in the United States. Worst of all, incurable. I looked at Lisa and said, “Oh my God, I’m bleeping dead!”

I couldn’t believe it. I had longevity in my family. My mother is still alive at 99 years old. The future had been full of plans and possibilities, but it now had become a foggy, uncertain horizon. And in the midst of that uncertainty, I learned things about myself, life, and the important things in the world that I hadn’t imagined before.

Stage 4 cancer doesn't just affect the body — it tests the very core of who we are. It forces us to confront our vulnerabilities, our limitations, and the fragility of our existence. But here's the beautiful paradox: in those moments of fear, I found strength I never knew I had. In those moments of doubt and worry, I discovered a capacity for love, compassion, and gratitude that seemed to overflow.

I learned that time, the one thing we often take for granted, is not a guarantee. We wake up each day assuming tomorrow will come, but cancer teaches us that today is all we truly have. It teaches us to cherish the present, to find meaning in the smallest moments, and to let go of the things that don't serve us.

After months of treatment in a clinical trial at the Moffitt Cancer Center — first androgen deprivation therapy and then the many infusions: first chemotherapy, then finally immunotherapy — resilience is what kept me going. It is the quiet determination that says, “I am not defined by my diagnosis. I am defined by my spirit.”

Cancer also teaches us the importance of connection. When faced with something as immense and overwhelming as this, it becomes clear that we are not alone. The love of a wonderful spouse, of friends, family, even strangers, is a lifeline. We realize that human connection is what truly sustains us — not success, not material wealth, but the people who surround us, who care for us, and who offer their hearts in times of need.

In the face of adversity, we come to see that the bonds we share are what give us the will to fight and the courage to keep moving forward. The ICD has proven to be a very

important source of those connections as I have gone through my treatments. The connection to like-minded dental colleagues around the world has given me comfort as I travel along my road. Their support has been humbling and inspirational.

Over the course of my 25 years of service to the ICD, I have had the chance to visit 13 of the 16 Sections personally, and I have met virtually many times with the others. Yes, there are many differences between us, but there are more commonalities, especially in the dental world. It is increasingly important to be a global citizen, especially in the face of those who would put themselves and their own countries ahead of all others. You do not raise yourself up by putting others down. You are raised up by helping others to come stand beside you. Today I invite you to become an international person. Be aware of and understand the existence of the many cultures around the globe, the great and sometimes ancient civilizations and religions, the incredibly diverse array of traditions. By all means, have pride in your own cultural heritage, but respect the cultural background of others. Understand that everything that we do has an effect upon everything else.

Global citizenship is the idea that your identity transcends geography or political borders, and that your responsibilities or rights are derived from membership in a broader class: "humanity". This does not mean that you must denounce or waive your own nationality or your regional identities, but that those identities are secondary to your place in the global community.

God’s gift to his people is in the great variety of those people. Those who would have you believe otherwise live in complete certainty that there is only one true way to live and interact. I will tell you right now that certainty is the great enemy of unity. Certainty is the deadly enemy of tolerance. And the world needs tolerance now more than ever.

And lastly, cancer has taught me the power of perspective. Before my diagnosis, I had many plans, many things I wanted to do, and many dreams. But the truth is, sometimes life has a way of shifting those dreams in ways we never expect. And I’ve come to see that there is beauty even in this unexpected detour. The things that once seemed so urgent, so important,

now seem trivial. What matters is living authentically, with purpose, with love, and with joy in the moments we have. From my perspective, I decided to put my energy into helping the International College of Dentists to thrive and to grow toward reaching its enormous potential to level the playing field of oral health inequities worldwide. In that mindset, I applied for and was accepted into the first class of the ICD Global Oral Health Leadership Institute. There I learned the great power of bringing dedicated professionals from around the world together in an atmosphere of trust, shared purpose, and collective courage. In an intense week of workshops and exercises, we grew as a group and left feeling that real change in improving global oral health is possible, and that we are not alone in making it happen. The ICD was able to inspire leaders from diverse constituencies to craft and draft the necessary policy changes, funding reforms, and create the global movement that will put oral health where it belongs: right in the heart of health systems, integrated with the whole patient.

To those of you who may be facing a similar diagnosis to mine, I want you to know this: You are not defined by your illness. You are more than your body. You are more than your diagnosis. You are a story still being written, full of chapters of strength, hope, and growth. You have the power to find meaning even in the darkest of days. And above all, you have the power to inspire. So far, my clinical trial has done what it intended to do: stabilize an aggressive form of cancer, starve it, and give my body some weapons to fight it. Cancer won’t take me without a fight.

To everyone else — even if you're not yet facing your own battles but might be walking alongside a loved one who is — remember this: cherish every single day. Support causes that you believe in. Love deeply, forgive quickly, and never take anything for granted. Life is fragile, but it is also resilient. We are all capable of more than we realize, and sometimes it’s through our greatest trials that we discover just how strong we truly are. I am sincerely grateful, thankful for my life, and truly blessed to have had the chance to live it.

DISTRICT ONE FELLOW, DR. LESLIE GRANT, RECEIVES NATIONAL DENTAL ASSOCIATION’S HIGHEST HONOR

Leslie E. Grant, DDS, FICD (L) is presented the NDA's Legacy Award by NDA president, Cheryle Baptiste, DDS, FICD. The award inscription reads, “Your influence as an educator, advocate, and trailblazer has enriched our profession, empowered future generations, and strengthened the legacy of the National Dental Association. With deepest gratitude, we recognize your enduring contributions and transformative impact on the communities we serve.”

The National Dental Association awarded their highest honor, the Legacy Award, to Dr. Leslie Grant, in June 2025. The Legacy Award recognizes individuals whose lifelong commitment and extraordinary contributions have left a lasting impact on the dental profession, oral health equity, and the NDA community. Dr. Leslie Grant is a former chief dental officer for the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners and is currently an examiner for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessment. She is a past president of the National Dental Association and a former board chair of the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention, now the Association for Dental Safety. Dr. Grant exhibits a passion for the dental profession, community outreach, and engagement in organized dentistry.

Paul P. Taylor Award

District 9 Fellow, Dr. Margherita Fontana of Michigan, is the recipient of the Paul P. Taylor Award. This award is given to the lead author of the most prestigious journal article in pediatric dentistry from the previous year, as determined by the AAPD Editorial Board and the AAPD Awards Committee.

Manuel M. Album Award

District One Fellow, Dr. Martha Forero of Massachusetts, is the 2025 recipient of the Manuel M. Album Award. This award is presented annually to the individual or organization that’s made the greatest contribution to the oral health of children with special needs.

Jerome B. Miller “For the Kids” Award

District One Fellow, Dr. Brianna Muñoz of Connecticut, is the 2025 recipient of the Jerome B. Miller “For the Kids” Award by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. This award is presented annually to an up-andcoming clinician, researcher or academician in pediatric dentistry for their outstanding efforts directed to children’s oral health and welfare.

Early Career Dentist “Under 10” Award

District 15 Fellow, Dr. Nina Ray of Texas, was the first recipient of the Early Career Dentist “Under 10” Award by the AAPD in 2025. This award honors exceptional young professionals who demonstrate excellence in pediatric dentistry through clinical practice, research, leadership, academia, advocacy, or service.

Additionally, AAPD announced District 16 Fellow, Dr. Jessica Yuna Lee, as their next chief executive officer, effective June 1, 2026. Dr. Lee currently serves as the William M. Demeritt Distinguished Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and senior associate dean for faculty affairs and leadership development at the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry. She served as the AAPD president from 2020-2021.

Stephen Radack III, DMD, FICD, (Erie, PA), received the Distinguished Dental Editor Award at the AADEJ’s 2025 Annual Meeting and Conference in San Diego. The award recognizes editors who have brought exceptional credit to their society, dental journalism, the dental profession, the ADA, and organized dentistry in general through the production of high-quality publications and superior leadership and example.

ICD FELLOWS DONATE THEIR TIME AND TALENTS TO MOM-N-PA IN 2025

The annual MOM-n-PA dental mission was held at the Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, PA, on June 6 and 7, 2025.

Volunteers performed 6,098 procedures, treating a total of 809 patients. Over 750 volunteers participated in the dental mission, including 21 ICD USA Section Fellows. District 3 FICD volunteers included Drs. Bernadette A. Logan (Regent), Ronald K. Heier (Deputy Regent), Seth A. Walbridge (Deputy Regent), Gary S. Davis (general chair), and Bruce R. Terry (facility chair). Sixteen other Section Fellows also volunteered.

The MOM-n-PA project serves the local underserved community. It aims to relieve patients’ pain and suffering due to dental disease and educate patients on preventive dental measures through personalized dental education and distribution of home care products. Additionally, MOM-n-PA compiles data on the population’s dental needs. The registration survey revealed over 20% of patients reported they were in pain. The project also educates policy makers through social media, press conferences with invited guests, and tours of the dental mission. Patients reported on the exit survey that they were treated with respect and dignity.

DISTRICT 15 FELLOWS ARE CO-RECIPIENTS OF THE 2025 TEXAS DENTIST OF THE YEAR

District 15 Fellows and longtime friends, Drs. Partha Mukherji and Victor Rodriguez, were honored as co-recipients of the 2025 Texas Dentist of the Year during the Texas Academy Awards on September 12, 2025, by the Texas Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Partha Mukherji is a clinical assistant professor in comprehensive dentistry at Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas. Dr. Rodriguez is an adjunct professor at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry. Each was honored for service to his community and the dental profession, commitment to continuing education, leadership and professional excellence.

TUFTS UNIVERSITY 2025 ALUMNI DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD GOES TO DISTRICT ONE FELLOW, DR. ABE ABDULWAHEED

Dr. Abdullaibrahim (Abe) Abdulwaheed is a District One Fellow from Massachusetts and recipient of Tufts University’s Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. Abdulwaheed is the 159th president of the Massachusetts Dental Society and serves as the vice chair of the MDS Political Action Committee and People’s Committee. A dedicated advocate for dental policy reform, Dr. Abdulwaheed authored H. 4842, “An Act Relative to Dental Hygienist Reciprocal Licensure,” now law, which created a pathway for foreign-trained dentists to obtain a Massachusetts dental hygiene license.

FELLOW JACQUELINE MILLER HONORED AS MISSOURI DENTAL ASSOCIATION DENTIST OF THE YEAR

Jacqueline Miller, DDS, MS, MPH, FICD, a retired orthodontist and former dental director for the state of Missouri, was named the Missouri Dental Association Dentist of the Year at the MDA annual awards banquet on June 21, 2025.

The Dentist of the Year Award recognizes a member dentist who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Association, to the profession of dentistry, and/or to the community in the past year.

Among many other efforts related to workforce development, Dr. Miller is celebrated for being a significant part of a key group that created the curriculum and training processes for the Oral Preventive Assistant pilot program, a type of expanded function dental auxiliary to help provide increased access to dental care, while serving as the Missouri dental director.

FELLOW WILLIAM T. KANE RECEIVES 2025 ADA HUMANITARIAN AWARD

William T. Kane, DDS, MBA, FICD, (Dexter, MO), is the recipient of the 2025 ADA Humanitarian Award for his impactful leadership and volunteer service through Smiles of Hope Dental Clinic, which provides vital, accessible oral health care to the underserved in his rural community and beyond.

The Humanitarian Award honors an ADA member each year who has distinguished themselves by outstanding, unselfish leadership predominantly in the field of dentistry, through the expenditure of extraordinary time and professional skills to improve the oral health of underserved populations.

Since the inception of Smiles of Hope in 2010, Dr. Kane and his fellow volunteer dental professionals have treated over 11,000 patients and provided over nine million dollars in dental care to underserved populations. Many of the clinic’s patients are veterans, and some patients travel over 1,000 miles due to their inability to find affordable treatment locally. The clinic also serves the recovery house and inmate populations.

2025 AFRICAN CHILDREN'S MISSION DENTAL CLINIC

With the construction and equipping of the African Children’s Mission dental clinic in Uganda completed in 2024, volunteers served the region during a ten-day mission trip from July 3-13, 2025, led by District 5 Regent, Dr. Bruce E. Cunningham.

During the 2025 mission trip, approximately 270 people received dental care from a team of 14 volunteers (pictured below), with the majority of procedures being extractions. The region has extreme access-to-care issues because nearly everyone is a subsistence farmer with no discretionary income or transportation. Education efforts focused on avoiding refined sugar by maintaining a traditional diet and daily personal oral hygiene.

With a sustainability approach in mind, local people were trained to provide urgent oral treatments to render care throughout the year. Because of the magnitude of unmet needs, it is not possible to make a fair assessment of impact; however, it is a certainty that oral disease morbidity has been reduced.

A Dental Mission to a War Zone in Ukraine

Our 90 dental, short-term missions have taken us to fascinating places over the last three decades, yet never to an active war zone, until recently. In 2005, we spent a joyful time near the Black Sea in Ukraine serving orphaned children. Since then, Ukraine has drastically changed due to the escalated aggression that began in 2022 when Russia began a full-scale invasion with drone missile strikes.

Our invitation to serve came from Greg, a 32-year American missionary in Ukraine. He related how visiting alone would encourage and support disheartened communities, while our dental services would bring an invaluable impact. So, we packed our four-bag portable dental clinic and met Greg in Warsaw, Poland, as airlines do not fly into Ukrainian airspace

during the war. Before the three-day drive to the eastern warfront, and despite the biting October wind, we took an extra day to experience the beauty, culture, and history of Warsaw, a well-rebuilt city since its terrible destruction in WWII due to Nazi and Russian invasions.

Ukraine, although about the size of Texas, has three million more residents than that state. Due to the four-year war, it is considered one of the least prosperous countries in Europe. Ukraine has vast, fertile fields that produce huge grain exports and the largest production of sunflower seed oil anywhere. Irrigation is rarely required, and even the valuable soil is shipped globally from the farms, which are primarily individually owned. It has been calculated that Ukraine alone could feed the entire world.

Greg drove us east to Kyiv, the capital. In several places, the well-maintained, four-lane freeways had reinforced, widened concrete suitable for use as airstrips. Nightly curfews were enforced from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. In Kyiv, huge apartment buildings seemed blocks long and over ten stories high. We heard frequent air-raid sirens. The city relies on the anti-missile systems that shoot down Russian drones, which sounded like fireworks. Our cell phones would alert with loud emergency warnings that occurred so often we turned off notifications.

We left Kyiv for eastern Ukraine and drove by ploughed fields of black dirt, dry corn husks, sunflower stalks, and trees in blazing, fall colors. The drive seemed remarkably tranquil as we snapped pictures in small villages of the shimmering church domes as Greg slowed from his usual 120 km/hour. About 85% of Ukrainians are generally Christian, members of Eastern Orthodox beliefs. Greg stated, “Ukrainians are religious, sensitive, and think wrong should be judged. They seek consensus, are pragmatic, and know when things aren’t right. War seems to heighten evil, and the sins of inhumanity become horribly real.”

Our first dental clinic was located at a church near Kharkiv, population 1.2 million. Communication and navigation were blocked to make it difficult for the Russians to guide rockets and drones into the area. Often, many cities had blackouts, which included turning off vehicle headlights.

As a vocational pastor – one who holds a secular job for support while pastoring a church – Vladimir had the huge, hardened hands of a metal worker. His caring heart was evident; he and Greg often provided humanitarian aid through projects in the surrounding areas, even out to the battle fronts. This included counselling for grief, stress, and addiction assistance to soldiers and families.

Understanding that Vladimir had a toothache yet would not consent to treatment

until all his needy congregants were seen (which would not have happened over the next two days), Bob insisted on setting up the dental clinic in the living room that first night to take out Vladimir’s painful, third molar that required surgical sectioning. His three grandsons showed up with multiple cavities and the need for serious brushing and flossing advice. Vladimir’s wife and a refugee neighbor were also treated, establishing Bob’s reputation for painless and skilled dentistry.

For the next two days we worked primarily on Vladimir’s church members, mostly older people, with a majority appearing to be widows. Most retirees received government pensions of about $40 a month, which is not sufficient to cover living expenses. Bob adjusted a partial on one lady who had not worn the appliance in several years due to its ill fit. Meanwhile, he also fixed a broken front tooth, restoring her smile. She broke down in tears as she hugged each of us, affirming our saying that we “work for hugs!”

Our second assignment was in Izyum, a town previously occupied by Russian troops about 12 miles from the current front. The Russian soldiers had taken over the home of Pastor Vatali and his wife, Tanya, sending them scrambling for a place to stay.

Izyum has a population of 28,000, yet only 4,000 people are employed. There are many decimated or damaged buildings, including school buildings, so classes are held online.

The reconstructed home where we held the dental clinic had withstood a Russian strike. The view from the living room window showed the backyard that was off-limits due to its minefield. Our clinic had three bedrooms for the team and sporadic, hot shower water. The kitchen served as the waiting room and featured a modern refrigerator that held excessive amounts of food delivered each mealtime by church ladies.

We were a great team, each member with a purpose. Bob focused on dentistry while Diane assisted and sterilized. Our interpreter, Victoria, nurtured the patients lovingly, and Greg expertly planned the relationships and trip details. Even though the sounds of war could be heard often, we will always remember the prayers shared with the friendly, thankful, suffering, and resilient Ukrainians whom we met.

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the ICD USA Section Foundation!

The ICD USA Section established the ICD USA Section Foundation on January 22, 1986. “Foundation History –1986-2010,” by Dr. Richard Shaffer, describes the founding of the ICD USA Section Foundation:

The ICD USA Section Foundation was chartered on January 22, 1986, as a nonprofit corporation (501(c)(3). The Foundation thus opened an important avenue for ICD Fellows to make such tax deductible gifts, donations, bequests and other such contributions for scientific and charitable causes selected and supported by the ICD USA Section. The Foundation significantly adds to the already great stature and work of the ICD.

THE PURPOSE OF THE FOUNDATION—

The constitution of the Foundation states that the purpose shall be exclusively educational, scientific and charitable and shall among other things include the following purposes: (1) to encourage and assist worthy projects in the scientific dental research: (2) to encourage and assist graduated dentists in continuing education and the improvement of their knowledge: (3) to encourage and assist in a charitable way the efforts to provide dentistry to those in need of such help.

2025 Disaster Relief Grant Supports Hurricane Victims in Jamaica

The ICD USA Section Foundation awarded a $5,000 Disaster Relief Grant and over 1,000 toothbrush/toothpaste kits to IMR, offering critical support, dental care supplies, hope and healing to communities in crisis after Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on October 28, 2025.

IN COMBINED SUPPORT FROM THE ICD USA SECTION FOUNDATION AND ICD GLOBAL VISIONARY FUND

n the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which struck Jamaica on October 28, 2025, International Medical Relief deployed its first Disaster Area Response Teams to provide emergency medical care, essential supplies, and critical support to communities in crisis. IMR is an organization with deep ties to the ICD through its Founder and President, Shauna Vollmer King, a 2025 Honorary Fellow of the ICD USA Section. IMR specializes in frontline medical and dental care. Volunteers worked alongside local authorities, healthcare providers, and international partners to assess medical needs, deliver emergency care, and distribute hygiene and trauma supplies, focusing on the hardest-hit regions along Jamaica’s southern and western coasts.

“We are honored to support our partners in Jamaica and stand alongside organizations like the Red Cross, CARE, Americares, and others working tirelessly to bring relief," said Fellow Shauna Vollmer King.

A Collaborative Response

ICD Global Visionary Fund Matches ICD USA Section Foundation Disaster Relief Grant

The initiative began when the ICD USA Section Foundation awarded an initial $5,000 grant and over 1,000 toothbrush and toothpaste kits (pictured left) to support IMR’s immediate response in Jamaica. The ICD Global Visionary Fund – Henry Schein Cares Grant Program recognized the magnitude of the crisis and the opportunity to double the impact of this humanitarian effort. Consequently, the GVF matched the ICD USA Section Foundation’s contribution with an additional $5,000 grant for a total of $10,000 in disaster relief. By combining resources, the ICD USA Section Foundation and the GVF helped aid reach the most vulnerable communities in Jamaica, as they began the long process of rebuilding.

Dentistry For All Community Preventive Program in Comitancillo, Guatemala

A REPORT BY DENTISTRY FOR ALL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND ICD FELLOW, Shane A. Fisher, DDS

Dentistry For All has had a long-standing relationship with the people of Comitancillo, Guatemala, a community of over 60,000 people. Since 1995, we began attending to this community with emergency dental care. Through our 30-year relationship, we have expanded those services to more routine operative care and most importantly preventive dental education and services to the children in the local school systems. Twice a year, Dentistry For All sends dozens of outstanding volunteers to the underserved area to provide dental care. In cooperation with University of San Carlos of Guatemala, we also have a graduating dental student providing care and preventive services to the community almost year round. We have had a community educator in the village working with school children and teaching oral hygiene skills and conducting fluoride programs since 2010. Thank you to the International College of Dentists USA Section Foundation for supporting our work in Guatemala and providing a grant to fund our school-based preventive program for 2025.

University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry Students at the Somos Amigos Medical Dental Mission

In 1997, Frank Brightwell, a high school teacher, assembled one physician, one dentist, and six high school students in response to a request for healthcare from an isolated farming community in the Dominican Republic without electricity or running water. From this simple petition, Somos Amigos was founded and evolved to serve a region that includes 36 rural and isolated mountain communities, providing quality and reliable healthcare, delivered at no cost to patients. Somos Amigos serves farmers, ranchers, tradespeople, and domestic workers from a collection of small buildings they have built over the years.

For many, Somos Amigos has been their only source of medical and dental care. In addition to treating those with acute conditions and providing wellness checks for children, Somos Amigos cares for hundreds of patients with chronic diseases, through periodic consultations and life-sustaining medications. The insulin outreach program now sustains 28 individuals with chronic diabetes. Women’s health initiatives have responded to the unique healthcare needs of the female patients. The clinic maintains a robust laboratory and well-stocked pharmacy. The clinic’s dental services include educational and preventive outreach,

restorative dentistry, endodontics, oral surgery, and an on-site prosthetics lab. Presently, Somos Amigos serves approximately 900 individuals annually, in 2,300 distinct patient visits. The clinic operates on an interval model, whereby care is delivered in a single facility by a team of volunteer physicians, dentists, hygienists, nurses, interpreters and others who work alongside paid Dominican professionals quarterly for a week at a time. On each trip, the team consists of an average 15-20 volunteers and 10-12 paid temporary and permanent staff. While Somos Amigos has demonstrated 29 years of success in healing

and compassionate care, there are many in its catchment area that they do not have the capacity to serve. Using conservative estimates based on surveys in the constituent communities, there are an additional 3,0004,000 people that would benefit from the care that Somos Amigos provides and is not available elsewhere. The current model of interval care does not allow Somos Amigos to expand access to accommodate this need, and the current clinic building does not meet Ministry of Health requirements for a full-time clinic. There is a capital campaign to raise the funds necessary to expand care to more people and meet the facility requirements for a full-time clinic. Currently there is an organizational succession plan in place, and the local citizens are intimately involved in the leadership and management of the clinic. Somos Amigos has provided critical, life-sustaining medical and dental care to a limited population of subsistence farmers in the mountains of the Dominican Republic for nearly 30 years, yet there are

thousands more in our catchment area who remain unserved. The solution is to reconstruct the clinic for full-time operations. This project will require a total of $6.5 million, which includes $2 million for construction and $4.5 million for additional long-term operating costs.

Iwant to sincerely thank you for your generous support that made my recent mission trip to the Dominican Republic possible. As a dental student, having the chance to care for people who almost never have access to dental treatment was truly eye opening. While there, I performed extractions, restorations, and delivered dentures to patients who often traveled for days from remote villages to reach the Somos Amigos clinic. Many of them hadn’t seen a dentist in years, or ever. Being able to relieve their pain, even in small ways, was both humbling and rewarding. This trip left a lasting impact on me — not only as a future dentist but also as a person. It reminded me how meaningful my education is and how important it is to use these skills to serve others. One of the most unforgettable moments was giving dentures

to patients who had been unable to chew or speak comfortably for years. Seeing their faces light up with a smile and receiving hugs of gratitude is something I will carry with me forever.

Your support gave me the opportunity to live this experience, and I am deeply grateful. Because of your generosity, I was able to help a community in need and grow in my understanding of what it means to serve with compassion. Your kindness extends so far—it truly touches the lives of every patient we are fortunate to care for.

Dental Student Scholarship Program

The International College of Dentists USA Section Foundation supports dental students through the Dental Student Scholarship Program. The program reflects a deep concern about the high cost of dental education and its negative impact on the career choices of graduating dentists—supporting individual students while raising awareness of the serious and growing burden of dental school debt.

Washington University Dental Alumni Association (WUDAA) established a dental student scholarship program years ago after the Washington University Dental School, St. Louis, closed during the 1990s. Because both ICD and WUDAA have established programs in support of dental students and high-quality dental education, they have agreed to collaborate in the continuation and future growth of the existing Foundation Dental Student Scholarship Program.

Nominations and letters of endorsement on behalf of student applicants may be submitted by ICD Fellows, Washington University dental alumni or dental school faculty members. Candidates shall demonstrate financial need and be pre-doctoral students in good standing at a USA dental school approved by ADA/CODA. International students are eligible. Submit applications by April 30 each year to the ICD USA Section Foundation office.

Established in 2012, the Dr. John B. Lathrop Memorial Fund honors Dr. Lathrop’s leadership and dedication to the ICD in leadership roles, including President of the USA Section, nine years as a member of the International Council, and as President of the ICD USA Section Foundation. Donors who contribute $1,000 receive a framed set of six dental-themed stamps from his collection and a Sapphire* Level Lapel Pin.

Dr. Richard G. Shaffer Memorial Fund

Established in 2012, the Dr. Richard G. Shaffer Memorial Fund honors Dr. Shaffer’s distinguished career and contributions to the ICD as Secretary-General/Registrar for 10 years and Convocation Committee Chair for 25 years. Donors who contribute $500 receive a Shaffer Memorial Coin, a special pouch crafted from retired Convocation robes and Foundation Lapel Pin.

Dr. Vangel R. Zissi Memorial Fund

Established in 2024 to honor Master Fellow Dr. Vangel R. Zissi, this fund celebrates his life and legacy. Dr. Zissi began serving ICD as District One Massachusetts Deputy Regent in 1985, and was elected through the chairs, becoming the 2005 ICD USA Section President. He continued his service through 2012 as USA Section Deputy Registrar and the ICD Global Deputy Secretary-General.

Dr. Herbert K. Yee Memorial Fund

Established in 2024 to honor Master Fellow Dr. Herbert Y. Yee, this fund celebrates his life and legacy and will be used to help support ICD charitable projects. Passionate about the College, he served in 1972 as California Deputy Regent and eventually became the ICD USA Section President in 1985. He served as a USA Section Foundation Trustee from 1989-1990 and Vice President from 1991-2000. Dr. Yee represented the USA Section on the International Council from 1988 until he served as ICD Global President in 1996. In 2019 he was honored with ICD’s esteemed Ottofy-Okumura Award.

Dr. H. Clifton Simmons III Memorial Fund

The Dr. H. Clifton Simmons III Memorial Fund, established in 2019, honors his legacy. Dr. Simmons was a beloved leader of the ICD USA Section and served as its Editor. The Fund supports the projects he championed, reflecting his commitment to service and humanitarian work.

Dr. Bettie R. McKaig Memorial Fund

Established in 2020 to honor Dr. Bettie R. McKaig, this fund celebrates her dedication to the ICD, and is used to promote the projects that she championed in the ICD USA Section: International Student Experience, Leadership Development, international relationships and student support. Dr. McKaig began as the North Carolina Deputy Regent. She then became the 16th District Regent and continued serving through the chairs of ICD Global, serving as President in 2019.

Dr. Richard M. Smith Memorial Fund

The Richard M. Smith Memorial Fund was established by District 15 Texas Fellows and colleagues throughout the USA Section to remember and honor the legacy of Richard Madsen Smith, DDS. Funds raised will be used by the Foundation to further its mission of supporting research, education, and oral health projects, both domestic and international.

was deeply saddened by the passing of my colleague and dear friend, with whom I served for ten years on the Council and Executive Committee of the International College of Dentists. Even after the shock of his devastating diagnosis, Dick remained committed to making each day meaningful and livable. I have no doubt that he succeeded, and that his family would agree.

Shortly after he became President, I interviewed Dick. That conversation captured who he truly was: thoughtful, grounded, quietly confident, and deeply committed to service. It reflected the values that guided both his leadership and his life.

Dick led by listening. In meetings, he often stood back, allowing others to speak fully, even passionately or contentiously, before weighing in. When he did speak, he had a rare ability to synthesize opposing views, identify what truly mattered, and offer a path forward that moved the group toward resolution. His leadership was never performative; it was effective, and his judgment was trusted.

He was exceptionally intelligent, with an encyclopedic breadth of knowledge he never felt compelled to display. You discovered it only in casual conversation, where it surfaced naturally and without pretense.

Beyond leadership, Dick was deeply human: warm, loyal, and genuinely funny, with an impeccable sense of timing. He knew when to lighten the moment and when to say exactly what needed to be said.

From time to time, Dick would confide in me beginning with a half-smile and the words, articulated in his Texas accent, “Dov, this is dead man’s talk.” I honored his confidence then, and I honor it now. Those conversations reflected his integrity, seriousness of purpose, and deep sense of responsibility.

When encouraged to run for President, his first instinct was to tell me that he needed to speak with Jimmie, his partner, anchor, and equal. His devotion to her was evident to all who knew him. My heart goes out to her, and I extend my deepest condolences.

One of Dick’s enduring passions was aviation, particularly the more than twodecade project of building his own plane. It was a meticulous and disciplined effort, marked by patience and respect for complexity. Progress was slow at times; life intervened, regulations changed, but Dick adapted and persevered, always prioritizing safety. In the end, he was remarkably close to completion.

There is symbolism in that. Dick believed in doing things properly, especially when they took time.

I imagine him now at peace, reunited with his Creator, and finally taking flight, the work finished, the journey complete.

He will be immeasurably missed. His presence made our College stronger, our conversations wiser, and our friendships richer. It was a privilege to know him, to be trusted by him, and to serve with him.
