August’s Important & Rare Art auction saw a spectacularly positive response from buyer’s both here and offshore. In the most exciting art auction to be held in recent times, determined bidding achieving record prices was met with enthusiastic rounds of applause from the floor with standing room only.

By embracing the endless benefits of technology through our online bidding platform and App, hundreds of collectors watched and participated remotely. International exposure of art works from our New Zealand premises is attracting worldwide interest from both vendors and buyers. The sale realised the highest total for an art auction in New Zealand to date and included the most expensive painting sold at auction this year. Spirited phone, online and from-the-floor bidding saw Charles Frederick Goldie’s Memories fetch $548,568 and a fine Goldie drawing go for $132,000, a new record for a work on paper by Goldie.

Two works by Banksy achieved unprecedented results, $144,000 for Soup Can, effectively doubling the previous world record of $60,000, set at International Art Centre’s Collectable Art auction in June. Banksy’s Jack and Jill (Police Kids) reached $93,697. $132,000 was achieved for Colin McCahon’s work on paper View from the Top of Cliff Muriwai

An auction record of $55,255 was achieved for a work by the late Tim Wilson and $132,000 was achieved for Michael Smither’s Lovers’ and Dolphins. A major work by John Walsh, Pare to My Place, 2017 fetched $60,062 - also a record auction price. That work will be exhibited at Auckland Art Gallery in December.

The value and enjoyment derived from a well-chosen work of art was clearly acknowledged by buyers and the market in general with sales of over $2.5million.

Fatu Feu’u Fa’afofoga, RKS Art, Auckland 19 May - 5 June, 1992

This work comprises a grid of 20 square alternating bold frangipani flowers and X-like formations. The composition is partly informed by the Samoan tradition of siapo – a practice based on geometrical precision and repetition. It has a sense of expressionistic unruliness through loose brushwork and drips of paint. The palette functions in a similar way: foundational colours are restrained and earth-like, indicative of traditional tapa practice, and overlaid with neon yellows and greens. This encapsulates the juxtapose nature of Fatu Feu’u’s work in which he bridges traditional Samoan art and New Zealand modernism.

The frangipani flower, though not native to Samoa, is closely associated with the country. In this painting it functions as an instant visual symbol, and a metaphor for Feu’u’s unification of two visual cultures. As with all of his work, Samoan patterns, devices and techniques are not re-imagined through the filter of European-inspired Expressionism, but are left in their native form, wholly intact.

By 1993, when Feu’u completed this painting, he was gaining recognition for his contribution to New Zealand painting. For decades, he had been working in a relatively insular art world in which Pacific art was under-represented and over-appropriated. In spite of this, he had gained a degree of institutional recognition, partly helped by his association with Fomison, Clairmont and Maddox (the stylistic similarities between these four painters are obvious). He was represented by RKS Galleries in Auckland along with Hanly, McCahon and Hotere.

Equation of Authority can be seen as a rightful assertion of Feu’u’s position in New Zealand’s modern art narrative. Nearly three decades later, the title reminds us of the need to go further in recognising and promoting Pacific art in New Zealand. It speaks to a levelling of cultural and artistic duality, in which we are compelled to view cultural memory and consciousness through a bicultural lens.

In one of the first ever screenprints released by Banksy, the artist portrays law enforcement in a bold and striking way in Have a Nice Day. Twenty seven military or riot police are depicted in a single, intimidating line. In the centre of the group is a grey and black tank, underneath which the words Have A Nice Day are written.

The police are kitted out in black riot gear, marching in unison against an unseen threat or in fact towards the viewer. The faces of the police, which in reality would

be covered with protective visors, are covered with bright yellow acid-house style smiley faces; a motif we see fairly regularly in Banksy prints, particularly when it comes to portraying figures that use fear as a means of control.

Whether or not Banksy intended Have a Nice Day to intimidate or amuse, the artwork certainly speaks both to the idea that the police force are not all they seem, perhaps even hiding behind their smiles.

Ilya Bolotowsky was a leading early 20th-century Russian-American abstract painter based in New York City. His work constituted a search for philosophical order through visual expression. It embraced cubism and geometric abstraction. He was influenced by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

Bolotowsky adopted Mondrian’s use of horizontal and vertical geometric pattern and a palette restricted to primary colours and neutrals.

Having turned to geometric abstractions in 1936 Bolotowsky co-founded American Abstract Artists, a cooperative formed to promote the works of abstract painters.

Works from the Frans Baetens and Magda Van Gils Collection

International Art Centre is delighted to offer works from the Private Collection of Muka Studio founders Frans Baetens and Magda Van Gils. These two passionate art teachers collaborated with leading New Zealand artists in the production of handmade prints, initially using the two small stone lithography presses they had brought with them from Belgium in 1983. Some of he artists they worked with included Gretchen Albrecht, Don Binney, Tony Fomison, Nigel Brown, Fatu Feu’u, Dick Frizzell, Ralph Hotere, Pat Hanly, Allen Maddox, Para Matchett, Robyn Kahukiwa, Michel Tuffery and Selwyn Muru.

The Muka Studio Gallery soon had over 100 well known artists exhibiting and working in lithography with them. In 1988 a huge antique Voirin Press, identical to the presses Picasso and Miro used was added to the studio’s assets. Prints for international artists included Ed Ruscha, Michael Kvium,

Panamarenko, Martin Assig, Fred Cress, Kazuo Katase, Luk Tuymans, Ann Veronica Janssens and many others.

In November 1987 at Muka studio, Frans and Magda organised an exhibition of original artworks exclusively for youth. What had been intended as a single show met with great popular success and became an important annual event which lasted for some 35 years and travelled nationwide. Through the efforts of Frans and Magda many young New Zealanders were give the invaluable opportunity to view and acquire especially selected works of art.

All transactions were contactless and we reduced our carbon footprint along the way. Conditions of Sale and A Guide to Buyers

The highest bidder shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute as to the bidding in respect of any lot, that lot may be offered again at the discretion of the auctioneer whose decision shall be absolute and final.

The auctioneer has the right -

(i) to refuse any bid;

(ii) to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion;

(iii) to place a reserve on any lot;

(iv) to place a bid or bids on behalf of the seller;

(v) to withdraw any lot from sale;

(vi) to require a successful bidder to pay forthwith the whole or any part of the purchase price.

The auctioneer acts as the agent of the seller and neither he nor the seller shall be responsible for any defects or faults in any lot or for any errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot and no compensation shall be paid in respect of same.

From the time of lot being sold, such lot will be the responsibility of the buyer.

Successful bidders are required to pay for purchases immediately on completion of sale unless otherwise arranged.

All intending buyers are required to register for a bidding number prior to auction commencing. Subscribers can use their permanent bidding number. We reserve the right to ask for identification if you are a first time client of International Art Centre.

Each lot shall be paid for and removed at the buyers expense by no later than 5:00pm Friday 2 October 2020 unless otherwise arranged failing which the auctioneer and/or the seller shall have the right to forfeit any deposit paid by the buyer and to resell the lot either by public or private sale and any deficiency on costs of resale shall be borne by the defaulting buyer.

No lot may be collected whilst auction is in progress. Payment can also not be made until completion of auction.

SUBJECT BIDS

When the auctioneer declares a lot ‘subject’ this means the bid is below the set reserve and is subject to vendor accepting, rejecting or negotiating the bid. International Art Centre will endeavour to make contact with the vendor immediately after sale or the following day. If the bid is accepted, the highest bidder is obligated to make purchase.

ESTIMATES

Estimates are provided for each entry and act as a guide only. They are prepared well in advance of sale and are subject to revision at any time. Estimates are based on hammer price and do not include buyers premium.
