Conditions of Sale & A Guide to Buyers
The highest bidder shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute as to the bidding in respect of any lot, that lot may be offered again at the discretion of the auctioneer whose decision shall be absolute and final.
The auctioneer has the right -
(i) to refuse any bid;
(ii) to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion;
(iii) to place a reserve on any lot;
(iv) to place a bid or bids on behalf of the seller;
(v) to withdraw any lot from sale;
(vi) to require a successful bidder to pay forthwith the whole or any part of the purchase price.
The auctioneer acts as the agent of the seller and neither he nor the seller shall be responsible for any defects or faults in any lot or for any errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot and no compensation shall be paid in respect of same.
From the time of lot being sold, such lot will be the responsibility of the buyer. Successful bidders are required to pay for purchases immediately on completion of sale unless otherwise arranged.
All intending buyers are required to register for a bidding number prior to auction commencing. Subscribers can use their permanent bidding number. We reserve the right to ask for identification if you are a first time client of International Art Centre.
Each lot shall be paid for and removed at the buyers expense by no later than 4pm Friday 29 May 2015 unless otherwise arranged failing which the auctioneer and/or the seller shall have the right to forfeit any deposit paid by the buyer and to resell the lot either by public or private sale and any deficiency on costs of resale shall be borne by the defaulting buyer.
No lot may be collected or paid for whilst auction is in progress.
SUBJECT BIDS
When the auctioneer declares a lot ‘subject’ this means the bid is below the set reserve and is subject to vendor accepting, rejecting or negotiating the bid. International Art Centre will endeavour to make contact with the vendor immediately after sale or the following day. If the bid is accepted, the highest bidder is obligated to make purchase.

Estimates are provided for each entry and act as a guide only. They are prepared well in advance of sale and are subject to revision at any time. Estimates are based on hammer price and do not include our buyers premium.

The Barry Pilcher Collection spans fifteen years of diverse acquisition. Painting, sculpture and photographic art works by emerging, midcareer and established contemporary New Zealand artists come direct to the auction rooms from the taxation adviser’s Manawatu home.
The Pilcher Collection commenced with the purchase of a work from Paul Dibble’s Calici Smile series following Pilcher’s viewing of Dibble’s major Survey Exhibition at the Manawatu Art Gallery, 2001. Over the next decade and a half, Pilcher actively viewed, researched and acquired the art that piqued his interest. In the process an impressive and note-worthy collection has been created. International Art Centre’s Important, Early & Rare sales continue to attract some of New Zealand’s most important artworks. The July 2015 sale is no exception. From the Auckland Commerce Club Collection, after over thirty years on longterm loan to Auckland War Memorial Museum, International Art Centre is privileged to offer two of Australasia’s most memorable ANZAC images. The largest and best known watercolour of six versions painted by Horace Moore Jones of Simpson and His Donkey, will be sold with the original photograph. This photograph, taken by Dunedin born, Sergeant James G. Jackson, NZMC on 12 May 1915, is of stretcher-bearer Dick Henderson of Waihi with his help-mate, Murphy the donkey. The Red Cross insignia is pinned to Murphy’s muzzle-band. It is this photograph which inspired Horace Moore-Jones to paint one of the most poignant images of the Gallipoli campaign. Regarded as a national treasure and icon of Gallipoli this is a truly extraordinary offering. Kelcy Taratoa has been hailed as one of New Zealand’s most exciting young artists, bringing a new presence to New Zealand art. His work explores popular culture, personal identity and what it means to grow up as a Maori in the city. He is of Ngaiterangi and Ngati Raukawa descent. Through his work he acknowledges his disassociation from any positive sense of identification with his Maori ancestry, growing up in a detribalised typically urban New Zealand
setting. The landscapes in which his self-portraits dwell are suburban and capture the debilitating sense of soullessness that may be experienced in many New Zealand cities and towns. In Still Life with a Persimmon, Puriri Flowers and a Skull Glass two puriri flowers, found in the luxuriant bush outside the studio, nestle on top of a plump persimmon. The pictorial space in this work is extremely shallow and it’s not apparent what the fruit is resting on. We can intuit a horizontal surface only because we know the kowhai seeds must be resting on something. This strategy of taking the world away from the images by photographing them against dark backgrounds creates a climate of uncertainty and encourages us to see the objects in a new context. It’s something Pardington does often in her photographs.

I want my photographs to ask questions and to be rich with narrative possibilities. At the same time I try to evoke atmospheres that oscillate between
"... although the cinematic quality of her photographs might evoke the dark sensuality of Bill Henson or the surreal narratives of David Lynch, the place to begin with Roberta Thornley's work is in the 'everyday' world. There is no narrative linking her works. Rather, they are discrete images about the simplest and yet most evocative of ideas. Contained within each work is a sense of the efflorescence of life and the wet, dark, decaying extreme that is part of its cycle of disintegration and renewal. Her work has an underlying element of unease, as if each image marks a crucial connection between beauty, desire, and the 'bible-black' of melancholy."

I have a long association with this painting. I started painting Silent Echoes in the late 1970s, completing it several decades later in 2000. In 2001 the work was part of a series accepted for the the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition when thirty paintings from non-British artists were shown. It features the room in which I painted when living in Newtown,
Wellington. The same room was the setting for my 1970s paintings Maybe Tomorrow and Urban Sprawl. In this work we open the door on a forgotten scene. A fallen vase of entangled wild roses in search of water, a glass fruit bowl bearing desiccated orange skins and a plate of broken stemmed wine glasses.

Manutai is the name of my marae in Nuhaka situated between Wairoa and Gisborne. Manu translated is bird, and Tai is the sea. When I initially started researching my whakapapa (genealogy) of Ngati Rakaipaaka of Nuhaka, I found Manutai was not only a reference to sea birds, but also referred to the birds beneath the sea. I have utilised the Mangopare (hammerhead) Kowhaiwhai pattern to express the narratives associated with my marae. The compositions are arranged to reflect the ideas and concepts of whakapapa. This work is part of a series of works that investigate contemporary articulations of Queer identity in a postmodern world. The works are an exploration of Queer stereotypes, gay motifs and my own critical responses to theses modes of representation within New Zealand and the Pacific. There are three William paintings in the Wallace Arts Trust Collection. MC
Mark Curtis was born in Windsor, England. He is well known for his large-scale glitter carpet installations, he maintains a painting practice and is an experienced printmaker (relief and etching). Curtis graduated from RMIT University, Melbourne in 2003 with a Masters Degree in Fine Arts and currently lectures at Mediarts, Waikato Institute of Technology, New Zealand. As part of his Masters, Curtis was ordained as a Minister of the Universal Life Church, Modesto, California. His works are in major collections nationally and internationally, including: The Wallace Trust Collection and the Waikato Museum Collection.

Irene Ferguson gained a Diploma of Fine Arts with Honours from Otago School of Fine Art, Dunedin in 1993 and a Master of Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Art in 2005. In 2002 she was awarded the William Hodges Fellowship residency by the Southland Art Foundation. In 2003 she was awarded a Creative Communities Grant by the Wellington City Council and in 2008 Ferguson was the Artist in Residence at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, Wellington. From 2005 - 2006 she lived and worked in New York City. In 2010 she travelled to Italy to complete training in portraiture at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy.
In 2006 Ferguson was as finalist in the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery, London latter winning the 2008 Adam Portrait Award.
