From earliest times artists have been fascinated by the vital element of water. The water-bearer appears in the art of classical Greece and Rome signifying industry, abundance and beauty. Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci spent a life time drawing water in motion. The Impressionists, radically capturing the effects of light, gifted the world with paintings such as Renoir’s Boating Party and Monet’s Waterlillies.
New Zealander’s have a great affinity with the ocean, rivers, lakes and beaches of their dual island nation. Surrounded by water, with the tenth longest coastline in the world, Aotearoa overflows with artistic subject matter. Aqua is a group exhibition featuring over eighty paintings by leading artists, both local and international, distilling the beauty and drama of water.
