The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Wuhan Lanesync Supply Chain Management Co. Ltd., in order to cross-promote both organisations’ activities and the advancement of responsible aquaculture. Full news available here... The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC), a confederation of trade associations in Sri Lanka recently partnered with AB Partners AS as part of the Sri Lanka-Norway Business Matchmaking Program (BMMP). Last week, the partnership held a workshop focusing on the future developments of the country’s aquaculture sector. Full news available here... What’s the best way to protect your shrimp farm from criminals? Panic buttons. At least, that’s what shrimp producers in the coastal province of El Oro, Ecuador will soon be using. Proposed by the unions of the province, the panic button will act as a warning tool. In order to use it, those in the shrimp sector must fill out a registration database that allows access to immediate police in the event that a criminal act is committed. Full news available here...
06/01/14: Increasing fish production in Angola; walking shark discovered; farming salmon on land The Angolian provincial government recently announced plans to create more aquaculture specialists, in a bid to increase the country’s fish production.
“Training specialists in aquaculture will make fishermen’s work of catching fish easier, as well as creating tanks to increase production,” Nsuka Kupessa Ndongala, head of the fishing sector department told Angolan news agency Angop. Full news available here.

However, the Namgis closed containment facility on Vancouver Island, Canada is the first salmon farm in North America to grow Atlantic salmon on a commercial scale in a completely land-based aquaculture system. 07/01/14: Seaweed expansion in the philippines; starfish in pig feed; veg diets for farmed fish?
The local government n the Philippines has announced plans to expand seaweed production areas in the country. As well as marketing raw seaweed for food, it will also be used in the production of seaweeds chips, noodles, and pickles, which are highly marketed to different outlets in the province. Aarhus University of Denmark, together with the Danish Shellfish Centre, is looking into a new project that aims to establish whether starfish and mussels could be used as alternative sources of protein for laying hens and young pigs. As part of the project, mussels and starfish fished from the Danish fjords are mixed in with the feed of six pigs being kept at Aarhus University’s research centre. Full news available here. With an ever-increasing demand for sustainable farmed seafood, the food supply for farmed fish is beginning to run thin. In light of this, Fisheries and Oceans Canada - a government department - is researching the plausibility of alternative ingredients. “Canola, soybean, poultry meals, corn-gluten meal – these are [all] common ingredients used in agriculture feeds,” Ian Forster, aquatic animal nutrition scientist at Fisheries and Oceans Canada told CBC News. 07/01/14: Event: Safety and quality of livestock feed seminar Animal feed plays an important role in the food supply chain and in the safety and quality of food products. Feed safety and quality is therefore very important to the agriculture, aquaculture, feed and food sectors.
With demands and expectations on feed supply and livestock production ever increasing, the sourcing and use of feed materials of appropriate safety and quality will become more challenging. It is important therefore to understand the issues in relation to the production of feeds and their use in livestock production. What will the seminar involve? 09/01/14: Aquafeed mill in Saudi Arabia; Israel’s prawn project; Aquaculture activity programme
On 5 January, Saudi Fisheries company signed a contract to construct an aquafeed mill in Saudi Arabia. With an investment of SAR 16.7 million (US$4.5million), the aquafeed mill should be complete within the next eight months at the company’s main shrimp and fish processing plant located in the Asir province of Saudi Arabia. Professor Amir Sagi of Ben Gurion University, Israel has developed a new fresh-water prawn farming project based on a bio-technology method developed in the country. According to Sagi, the new method harnesses the potential to triple the production of fresh water prawns in India by allowing farmers to harvest an all-male prawn population, which will grow three times larger than females over a six-month period. 10/01/14: Fish farming operation in Malta; fish oil from plant seeds; compensation for Canadian aquaculture firm Aquaculture equipment specialist Fusion Marine recently announced it has successfully completed a major fish farm pen order for a bass and bream farming operation in Malta.
The contract – worth over 300,000 euros – for leading Maltese fish farming company Pisciculture Marine De Malte Ltd saw the successful installation of 19 Oceanflex and five Aquaflex pens at its farm site. Full news available here. Scientists have genetically engineered plant seeds to contain Omega-3 fatty acids normally found in oily fish, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported recently. As part of the research project, seeds from false flax (Camelina sativa) plants were modified using genes from microalgae - the primary organisms that produce these fatty acids. Back in April 2012, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency ordered aquaculture firm Cooke Aquaculture to slaughter hundreds of thousands of virus-infected salmon farmed at its Shelburne County processing plant, Nova Scotia, Canada. Back then, the company said the agency would compensate it for the loss of the fish, in the same way farmers are compensated when sick cattle and other land animals must be killed. The compensation figure - CAD$13million, or roughly $13 per fish - was released this week according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), which filed a freedom of information request with the agency. Known as the ‘Aquaria’, the centre is a technologically-advanced learning facility that offers the means to conduct research in outdoor and indoor laboratories. Back in March 2013, a worldwide appeal to find a female mate for the critically-endangered fish species Mangarahara cichli was launched. Aquarists at London Zoo, UK recently announced the success of the appeal after a small population of the species was found in remote Madagascar.

The Rio 2016 organising committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games recently announced a comprehensive agreement to promote Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified seafood at the 2016 Rio Games. This landmark announcement means that all of the seafood served to the athletes, officials, press and at the onsite restaurants will be certified as sustainably wild caught (MSC) and responsibly farmed (ASC). With over 14 million meals served over 27 days, the Olympic and Paralympic Games’ catering represents a huge challenge for every host city and is described as the largest peacetime catering operation in the world. Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) between Rio 2016 and the ASC and Rio 2016 and the MSC were signed recently. These MOUs reflect the Rio 2016 Organising Committee’s commitment to organise and stage the Games in such a way as to minimise adverse effects on and maximise benefits to the environment, promote sustainable development, and raise public awareness and action regarding environmental protection. “Rio 2016 aims to use the transformational power of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to enhance, promote and celebrate the fantastic variety of Brazilian seafood,” said Leila Luiz, head of food and beverage for Rio 2016. Julie Duffus, sustainability manager for the Rio 2016 organising committee, said: “We are looking forward to working in partnership with MSC and ASC to support the respected work that they have done, and continue to do, with the fisheries and fish farms of Brazil. This will ensure that our catering not only improves the local food industry but improves it to a standard that will leave a lasting, positive legacy post Games for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.” The Marine Stewardship Council, the world’s leading certification and ecolabel programme for wild caught seafood, has made a strong, longterm commitment to Latin America. Rupert Howes, chief executive of the Marine Stewardship Council, expressed the MSC’s gratitude and excitement about the agreement with Rio 2016.

“The MSC is honoured to be working with the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This partnership provides a great opportunity to promote and reward sustainable fisheries in Brazil. We will be working closely over the coming years with the State of Rio to encourage local fisheries into the third party assessment process and hope that fish and seafood caught from these and other fisheries that have met MSC’s standard for environmentally responsible and sustainable fishing will be available for the 14 million meals that will be served during the Games.” The announcement also underscores the strength of the ASC in helping the aquaculture sector become environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. Chris Ninnes, chief executive of the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, said: “I look forward to seeing many small scale farms across the state of Rio recognised for their good management. The collective action of the farms that enter the ASC programme will undoubtedly have a positive effect for the future of aquaculture in the region as it moves towards environmental sustainability – this is an important legacy and I hope other states follow the example of Rio.” Laurent Viguié, Brazil manager for ASC and MSC, said: “The Rio 2016 Olympic Organising Committee recognises a common vision with the MSC and ASC to conserve, protect, enhance and support natural resources, including biological diversity worldwide, and to support efforts to source and supply responsibly farmed and sustainable wild caught seafood for the 2016 Games. The majority of which will be from locally sourced small scale farms and artisanal fisheries.” The MOUs call for joint projects to be developed that will encourage participation in the certification programs, recognize sustainable seafood achievements by the 2016 Games, and collaborate on projects to educate and encourage change by consumers. The MOUs remain in effect until 1 June 2017.
14/01/14: University fights back against fatal shrimp disease; electric ships to cut fish farm emissions; GAA collaborates with Aussie seafood importers The University of Arizona, USA recently reported that Professor Don Lightner, along with assistant staff scientist Linda Nunan have created a rapid diagnostic test capable of detecting the bacterium which causes Early Mortality Disease (EMS) in shrimp.
This method will enable specific detection of affected shrimp, currently only identifiable through the use of histology, which is both time consuming and expensive. Through the University’s technology commercialisation office Tech Launch Arizona, a licensing agreement has been drawn up with GeneReach Biotechnology Corp. to commercialise the solution and make it available worldwide. Yesterday, YonHap News Agency reported the news that South Korea plans to introduce its first electric ships in order to help reduce the energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions of small fishing farms. According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the government plans to provide 1.2 billion won (US$1.13 million) to introduce up to 40 ships. Full news available here. In a move aimed at advancing responsible aquaculture in Australia, the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Seafood Importers Association of Australia (SIAA). First reported in Asia in 2009, Shrimp Early Mortality Syndrome has caused major production problems in the cultivation of shrimp in countries such as China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. In light of the this, the Asian Aquaculture Network (AAN) is pleased to announce a platform established to address the problem of EMS. The EMS Forum: Managing the Shrimp Epidemic is an assembly with a focus on how to best manage the issues facing shrimp farmers in the Asian territories. The Forum is scheduled to take place from 28 - 29 March 2014 at the Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand.

15/01/14: Mass farming of a rare fish; aquaculture research at Canadian university; champagne and trout? 44-year-old fishery researcher Ryotaro Ishida recently succeeded in mass-farming “shishamo,” a rare saltwater fish that is only found in the waters around Hokkaido, Japan.

The Ocean Sciences Centre, a department of Memorial University, Canada recently announced it is soon to receive CAD$110,000 in federal money in order to enhance its capacity to respond to the needs of the provincial aquaculture industry. According to a news release, the centre will engage in Atlantic salmon aquaculture and climate change research. Full news available here. Traditionally made from cured sturgeon eggs, Caviar is one of the world’s most expensive food products. Brazilian researchers however, have developed a caviar product made from trout eggs which they believe could become an economically lucrative alternative for domestic trout producers. 16/01/14: Aquaculture innovation platform launched in Egypt; new technique to detect toxic algae; NOAA reports on finfish aquaculture A new innovation platform aimed at planning the future growth of the highly successful Egyptian aquaculture sector has been launched, reported the global research partnership WorldFish on Sunday.

A group of European scientists have developed a range of new genetic techniques for the detection of toxic algal species. Experts of Vigo Oceanographic Centre of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), Spain, the University of Oslo, Norway, the Centre for Marine Research Breiðafjörður, Iceland and the Marine Biological Association, UK participated in the project. Following a study, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has released a new report that reveals certain fish specifies that can be farmed with minimal or no harm to the coastal ocean environment. During the study, scientists from NOAA’s National Ocean Service evaluated the environmental effects of finfish aquaculture, including water quality, benthic habitats and marine life across various farming practices. 17/01/14: Organic EU aquaculture; fish death mystery in US marina; two aquaculture projects proposed in Brazil
Norweigan research institute Nofima recently announced a new aquaculture project aimed at identifying areas for change in order to increase the production of organic fish in Europe. “Based on official numbers, below one percent of fish farmed globally today is organically produced”, says Prof. Ingrid Olesen, project leader at Nofima. “There are a lot of challenges, such as harmonizing the standards in such a way that it satisfies the views and principles of both producers and consumers”. Full news available here. A recent spate of deaths in Sparks Marina, Nevada, USA - a stocked fishery that has flourished since its creation 15 years ago - has state wildlife officials baffled. An estimated 100,000 trout, bass and catfish have died over the past month. Commenting on the mysterious happenings, Chris Healy, spokesman for the Nevada Department of Wildlife suggested a dramatic drop in dissolved oxygen levels could be the cause. Full news available here. Brazil’s National Economic Development Bank (BNDES) is to fund two aquaculture projects in the central-west region of the country. Allocating a total 34.4 million (USD 14.5 million), the first project will see the launch of two fish fattening centres and an industrial unit developed by Geneseas Aquaculture Ltd. The second project belongs to Delicious Fish Agroindústria e Comércio de Pescados Ltda., which will receive BRL 18.5 million (USD 7.8 million) funds to expand its facilities for aquaculture production. Roger Gilbert, publisher of the aquaculture magazine International Aquafeed, has been appointed President of the newly formed Association of International Seafood Professionals. He joins Roy Palmer who has been tasked with running the newly formed association and is its new Executive Director. “The aims and objectives of the AISP are based on individual participation with the view that by drawing together inputs from all sectors of the industry, and that includes those working in the capture industry as well as in fish farming, our industry can better organise itself and determine its future role,” says Mr Gilbert.

I am particularly keen to see seafood recognised as a major source of protein in our diets and for the benefits in health that it delivers. “For 22 years I worked as Secretary General of the International Feed Industry Federation through its developmental years, and I feel well qualified to assist in the establishment of this organisation during this critical inception period. “Fish has a rightful place in food security policies and must be actively supported and encouraged by governments everywhere. “China has shown us how freshwater fisheries, for example, can make a significant contribution to the supply of proteins in human diets and how fish farming can add to a country’s economic viability through the employment of thousands of people.” Even Europe is now waking up to the opportunity freshwater fisheries offer in terms of addressing its protein imbalance - Europe is less than 26 percent self-sufficient in protein production - and employment opportunities, he adds. Mr Gilbert says AISP will not compete with existing organisations serving various sectors within both the aquaculture and fisheries sectors, but give voice to individuals and assist in raising standards and the recognition of those standards throughout the industry. Executive Director Roy Palmer says from Australia, that the world is changing and the seafood industry needs to change with it. “The incredible rise and opportunity of aquaculture added to the continued improvement in fisheries worldwide are essential elements as the population increases and food security increases its importance,” he adds.
20/01/14: Salmon plant expansion in Tasmania; new jobs boost Scottish aquaculture industry; Finnish fish feed invention
Australian owned salmon company Huon Aquaculture recently announced plans to start a $10 million expansion of its salmon processing plant at Parramatta Creek in Northern Tasmania. A move which will see more production of value added seafood products. Spaeking to the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC), Frances Bender, director of Huon Aquaculture said the extension is a result of the relocation of its processing plant in South Australia. Full news available here. In a major economy boost, Scottish aquaculture equipment supplier Fusion Marine has created four new full-time positions. Three jobs have been created in administration and sales, whilst a new factory operative has also been recruited, taking total employment in the company to 16 full-time personnel. Benemilk Ltd, a joint venture of Raisio and Intellectual Ventures (IV), Finland recently announced it has filed a US patent application for a fish feed invention and is starting the commercialisation of the invention in the USA. Developed by the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute , the patent application centres around the way in which fish oil is used in feed. Fish oil has traditionally been used in fish feed, but this new invention utilises rapeseed oil - a more economical alternative. 21/01/14: New approach to marine resources needed tells FAO; fish farmers advised to keep financial records; new aqua feed market report
José Graziano da Silva director general of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recently commented on the issue of global food security, with a focus on how the planet’s marine resources need to be managed. “We cannot keep using marine and aquatic resources as if they were endless. And we cannot keep using our oceans as a waste pool,” Graziano da Silva remarked at the Blue Economy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab emirates earlier this week. Full news available here. Davidson Madira, a financial consultant and managing director of Natural Enterprise Development Ltd., recently commented on the need for fish famers and other aquaculture sector players to keep proper records and continuously research in order to access loans to finance their businesses. The European Aquaculture Society (EAS) recently announced the support of Marine Harvest and Kiliç Deniz as new Premium Sponsors. 22/01/14: GM salmon in court; aquaculture farming acquisition; high school aquaculture program
A collection of Canadian environmental groups in has called upon a court to decide if the federal government violated its own law by permitting the manufacture of genetically modified salmon in the country. The groups say the approval is illegal because it failed to assess whether genetically modified salmon could become invasive, potentially putting ecosystems and species such as wild salmon at risk, reports online newspaper The Vancouver Observer. Norweigan manufacturing firm AKVA Group has entered into an agreement with Egersund Group (also of Norway), to acquire 100 percent of the shares in the aquaculture farming services company YesMaritime for a price of NOK17.5 million, reuters reported today. Merrill High School, Wisconsin, USA is piloting a program to raise fish in a bid increase knowledge of the opportunities available in aquaculture. The project - known as “Perch in the Classroom”- was established with the help of Genoa National Fish Hatchery (GNFH). 23/01/14: Great lake state next aquaculture leader?; China and Japan address fishing operations; Alaska’s largest salmon harvest
The Michigan Aquaculture Association (MAA) held its annual meeting in Tustin, California, USA today. The meeting focused on the development of Michigan’s aquaculture sector, with discussions to assert the state as a contender in national seafood production. Full news available here. A second meeting of a Taiwan-Japan fishery commission was held yesterday in Tokyo to address issues related to the regulation of fishing operations in the overlapping waters in the East China Sea, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. Currently, fishermen from both countries are allowed to operate freely in the waters. Full news available here. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) recently reported the largest salmon harvest in history, with more than 272 million fish caught. The 219 million pink salmon comprised more than 80% of 2013’s total harvest, surpassing the pre-season forecasts for all five salmon species combined. Full news available here.

23/01/14: Accessing latest feed products is key to Canada’s aquaculture growth
While other countries have seen their aquaculture industries grow significantly, Canada has not. The growth of Canada’s aquaculture industry has flatlined for the past decade. A complex and outdated regulatory system is viewed as the significant reason for this stagnation. Regulatory restraints facing the industry include the inability to access feed ingredients now commonplace in most jurisdictions. Canada’s farmed seafood sector needs access to the most up-to-date technology in feed and fish health products in order to improve the growth, feed utilisation and disease management in fish which is necessary to be competitive in the world market, and to meet the demands of Canadians for seafood. Canada’s $2.1 billion aquaculture industry employs 15,000 people. Seven companies, operating nine aquaculture feed mills, currently produce aquaculture feed in Canada. Mills in British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia annually produce an estimated total of 150,000 to 200,000 tonnes of aqua feed per year. 24/01/14: Algae operation talks in Australia; fish freeze in Norway; UK aquafeed producer opens research station
For the last three years, Aurora Algae has been running a pilot research and development plant in Karratha, Western Australia, converting algae into biofuel, omega-three for the health food industry and protein for animal feed. The company originally indicated plans to build a full-scale commercial operation at nearby Mainland, which was flagged to open this year, reported the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) recently. Full news available here. A school of herring that strayed too close to the shore in Lovund, Norway froze to death last weekend, reports the Huffington Post. Aril Slotte, a pelagic fish expert at Norway’s Institute of Marine Research, suggested the herring had been herded into the shallows by cormorants, a natural predator, and were unable to flee to deeper water. Norwegian feed supplier EWOS has developed sophisticated health feeds that support farmed salmon through recovery from inflammatory diseases like pancreas disease (PD), heart skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) and cardio-myopathy syndrome (CMS). Since 2006, EWOS has undertaken an intensive research programme to assess the effects of dietary modulation upon farmed salmon that have been challenged by these viruses. Full news available here. 23

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently presented research that gives the precise levels of dissolved oxygen needed to keep pondraised catfish alive and growing. WorldFish in partnership with the Improving Employment and Incomes through Development of Egypt’s Aquaculture Sector (IEIDEAS) delivered training in ‘Best Management Practices’ to more than 1400 fish farmers in 2013. 29/01/14: Norway’s fish filleting project; first aquaculture company listed on NY stock exchange; aquaculture and fisheries website launched
Innovation cooperation Nordic Innovation - in partnership with Marel, Faroe Origin and Norway Seafoods - recently announced news of a new fish filleting machine, a result of a collaborative development project. It is hoped the new white fish filleting machine will provide the Norwegian seafood industry with a much-needed boost. Unlike farmed salmon, white fish varies greatly in size and weight and so filleting is a difficult task. Full news available here. Marine Harvest - the world’s leading seafood company - is the first aquaculture company to be listed at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The company rang the opening bell at the NYSE today, marking the beginning of a new era for the salmon farming industry. “This is a big day for Marine Harvest and the salmon farming industry,” said Alf-Helge Aarskog, CEO of Marine Harvest. 30/01/14: NY high school raises fish; Mexico initiates shark ban; ISA outbreak in Chile
A high school in New York, USA has come up with a novel idea to raise enough fish to feed thousands. The manmade river in the basement of Food and Finance High School the location of Cornell University scientist Philson Warner’s aquaculture lab - is home to over 10,000 tilapia, swimming against the current just as they would in the wild. The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food in (Sagarpa), Mexico recently announced plans to permanently ban the capture of Great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in a bid to protect the animals’ reproduction in national waters. The measure - which applies to federal waters of both Mexican coasts came into force on Tuesday. Full news available here. Sernapesca, Chile’s national fisheries and aquaculture authority, has confirmed an outbreak of infectious salmon anemia (ISA) at a salmon farm belonging to seafood firm Invermar in the country’s Chiloe region. Invermar has confrimed the outbreak, specifying the ISA virus has been positive within two cages with 108,078 Atlantic salmon. Full news available here.

31/01/14: Bob Geldof announced to present at aqua conference; Bermuda’s first aquaculture license; intersex tuna found in the Mediterranean Irish singer-singwriter and political activist Bob Geldof has been announced as the main speaker at this year’s AquaVision conference.
AquaVision is an established, world-class aquaculture conference that attracts a diverse range of stakeholders from across the aquaculture industry to Stavanger, Norway every two years. This year’s show takes place from 16-18 June. “Sir Bob Geldof is one of the world’s highest ranked and most authoritative corporate speakers and I am therefore delighted he will be one of our main speakers at AquaVision 2014. Sandys Secondary Middle School in Bermuda has been issued the island’s first Aquaculture or ‘aquafarming’ license, reported Trevor Moniz, Bermuda’s minister of health and environment yesterday. “Today I am very proud. as Minister responsible for the environment, to announce an event which we hope will mark a turning point in the diversification of Bermuda’s economy with the birth of commercial aquaculture. It is therefore with much pleasure that I am able to issue Bermuda’s first aquaculture license.” Full news available here. Scientists at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) have found intersex little tunny specimens (Euthynnus alletteratus) - commonly referred to as ‘little tuna’ - for the first time in the Mediterranean, reports FIS. The condition is thought to be the result of hormonal disorders possibly caused by environmental pollutants. Full news available here.
