EXCURSION DESTINATIONS

Niederhornbahn
Thanks to disabled-friendly facilities, people with limited mobility can easily reach the Niederhorn. The journey on the Niederhornbahn is barrier-free for passengers travelling from Beatenbucht to the Niederhorn mountain station (exception: Vorsass middle station). At the Beatenbucht valley station, there is a passenger lift that leads to the entrance of the funicular railway. At the Beatenberg station, the transport lift is operated by Niederhornbahn staff. The journey continues with another passenger lift to the entrance of the group cable car towards Niederhorn. The restaurant at the Berghaus Niederhorn is accessible at ground level and wheelchair-friendly.

BLS boat trips
Excursions by boat on Lakes Thun and Brienz are very suitable for mobility-impaired guests. Except for the smallest boat (MS Interlaken, Lake Brienz), all boats on both lakes are wheelchair-accessible and have a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Access to the outer decks and restaurants in 2nd class is at ground level. On the MS Berner Oberland and MS Stadt Thun (both on Lake Thun), 1st class is also accessible via a lift.

EXCURSION DESTINATIONS

Brienz Rothorn Railway
People in manual wheelchairs can be transported upon request. Powered or oversized wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on these trains. This also applies to motorised aids (such as Swisstrac), as these are very heavy. However, these aids can be parked free of charge at the valley station in Brienz. The person in the wheelchair is lifted into the carriage by hand (65 cm high), as the slope on the platform makes it impossible to set up a ramp. It is therefore advisable for the person to be accompanied by helpers who can lift them into the carriage and also assist them in an emergency situation (train cancellation/change of train en route). Once you arrive at Rothorn Kulm, you will need to negotiate the steeply ascending path (tarmac) to the restaurant (approx. 100 m). The restaurant is wheelchair accessible and has a wheelchair-accessible toilet. It is not possible to go on a ‘hike’ in a wheelchair, as all the paths around the Rothorn are red and white mountain hiking trails. However, wheelchair users can enjoy the view over Lake Brienz from the terrace. If you would like to book a wheelchair trip, the railway company needs the desired travel date, departure time from Brienz as well from Rothorn, the number of accompanying persons and your full address including telephone number (at least seven days before arrival).

Ballenberg Open-Air Museum of Switzerland
For wheelchair users or people with walking difficulties, we recommend using the West Entrance in Hofstetten. The west part of the open-air museum has fewer slopes and more wheelchair-accessible buildings. There is also a wheelchair-accessible tour called "Ballenberg à la carte", which leads through the open-air museum for about two kilometres and offers 12 different stations to discover. All the buildings on the tour are accessible by wheelchair, and various videos can also be accessed via QR code. A total of five wheelchair-accessible toilets are available within the museum grounds. Manual wheelchairs can be borrowed at the ticket office.
Grindelwald
– First
The First cable car is accessible (including the Bort and Schreckfeld intermediate stations). The First mountain station and restaurant are accessible as well. Access to the First Cliff Walk presented by Tissot is via a natural path with a maximum width of 1.20 metres. The First View is not accessible due to steps.

EXCURSION DESTINATIONS
Pfingstegg
Pfingsteggbahn is a traditional adventure attraction in Grindelwald, offering a variety of experiences such as the cable car, toboggan run, Fly-Line, and mountain restaurant. The goal is to make access to Pfingstegg easier and more comfortable for guests with reduced mobility or other impairments. Currently, some barriers remain: the path to the valley station is partly uneven, and access to the ticket office is still limited. On the positive side, access to the cabins is level, and the new cabins are fully wheelchair-accessible. At the upper station and towards the mountain restaurant, the paths are barrier-free, and an accessible toilet is available inside the station building. However, reaching the leisure activities such as the toboggan run or Fly-Line is currently only possible with assistance.
Parking: Parking spaces suitable for wheelchairs are available on the public parking.
Grindelwald – Männlichen
The terminal at Grindelwald was constructed in ac- cordance with the Disability Discrimination Act. Access is provided via wheelchair-accessible ramps and a lift. Ticket office, toilet facilities and cable car are located on the same level and have no thresholds. The 10-seater gondola offers level access at the base station, midway station and summit station.
The Männlichen – Kleine Scheidegg trail is not wheelchair accessible.
Isenfluh – Sulwald
The Isenfluh-Sulwald cable car transports people in wheelchairs (only manual wheelchairs) to Sulwald. At Sulwald, a two-kilometre long asphalt path invites you to take a walk. There is a small mountain restaurant at the mountain station. The valley station in Isenfluh can be reached by post bus (wheelchairs by prior arrangement at www.postauto.ch) from Lauterbrunnen or by private car.

EXCURSION DESTINATIONS

Niesenbahn
Thanks to the installation of ramps, barrier-free boarding and exiting from a carriage is possible at the valley and middle stations – with assistance from staff. At the mountain station, two lifts conveniently transport guests with reduced mobility from the carriage to the path leading to the mountain lodge. This path is paved and mostly flat, with the exception of one ramp. The path to the summit platform is also paved and wheelchair accessible. However, due to the incline, it is recommended to have a companion. This way, guests with limited mobility can fully enjoy the ride up the Niesen and the 360-degree panoramic view. The glass pavilion in the mountain restaurant and the restrooms are also wheelchair accessible. None of our rooms are barrier-free.
Parking situation: They have two wheelchair-accessible parking spaces. To access the valley station in Mülenen, you must use a railway underpass with a clearance height of 2.30 metres. Vehicles up to 2.50 metres wide and 3.20 metres high can pass through. If your vehicle is taller than this, there are two car parks at the BLS railway station in Mülenen. From there, wheelchair users must travel approximately 200 metres via the underpass at the station to reach the valley station.

Panoramic circular route on Lake Thun The bridge trail The panoramic bridge in Sigriswil is easily accessible by car and public transport. With a span of 340 meters, it is one of the longest walkable suspension bridges in the world. The pedestrian bridge is 1.20 meters wide and well-suited for wheelchair users. The perforated sidewall, which is 1.20 meters high, somewhat limits the spectacular panoramic view for lower-seated wheelchairs. Overall, the suspension bridge offers a wobbly and exciting experience for all visitors. Parking spaces directly at the Panorama Bridge. New: disabled-friendly toilet facilities on site. Sigriswil Tourism recommends crossing the panoramic bridge from Sigriswil. Access for wheelchair users is barrier-free and easy on this side. On the other side of the bridge, the path to the village of Aeschlen is steep and uneven and therefore not suitable for wheelchair users.

In addition, there are three hiking routes with different lengths, on which the Gimmialp can be discovered ideally with this wheelchair.
