EDITOR’S COMMENT

All Bed Confusion Almost half of shoppers don’t know which bed brand they’ve just bought, as inflation diverges between sectors It seems that many consumers shopping for a mattress or bed are highly confused by the whole process. How else do you explain that 40% of them couldn’t tell you which brand they’ve just bought? And you can’t really blame them. Retail and online bed displays are still largely a sea of white rectangles interspersed with small POS that is obviously failing to get over the message of why Model A is so much better than Model B. It’s not that bed brands have cut advertising spend: since 2000, spending has risen from about £22m to more than £100m last year, a real increase of about a quarter. The problem is that where potential customers see (usually very similar) ads has become so fragmented, and there are more brands. Gone are the days of 10million Sunday evening viewers seeing hippo and duck mascots when watching Heartbeat in 2000. And if you stop spending online, consumers rapidly forget they’d ever heard of a brand. This is where investment in staff training – be it for shop floor or call centre – can really make the difference, as seen among the Bed Industry Awards winners. August showed the difference between the furniture and flooring sectors when it comes to inflation and the likely impact of the US/Iran war. Household furniture saw annual retail price rises of 1%, up from 0.6% in July, after several months of deflation. All of this with historically high shipping costs. In contrast, smooth flooring rises more than doubled to 6.6%, while carpet and rug increases slowed but were still almost 5%, as oil prices remain about £100 a barrel. Furniture has seen several months of deflation (the outdoor sector saw 10.8%), while flooring has seen a solid 12 months of inflation for the sector. Great for boosting the top line, but not helping attract shoppers. As I write this, Headlam is in its fourth week of administration, and many staff are none the wiser what their immediate future holds, let alone Christmas mortgage or rent payments. For them restructuring is taking too long.

Likewise lifts profit forecast after sales leap Likewise has significantly lifted its profit forecast after Q3 sales jumped. The distributor says it now expects to see underlying pre-tax profits of at least £5m for 2026, up from last year’s £3.1m. The increased forecast came after Q3 sales jumped by 29.1%, and are now 20.7% higher for the year to date. The group has significant logistics and cutting capacity coming on stream in the months ahead as it looks to move towards its £300m target. Sales in the first half rose by 15.4% to £89.9m; gross margin rose by 0.8PP to 32.1%; underlying EBITDA rose by 15.9% to £5.1m, and underlying pre-tax profit by 79.5% to £1.32m. ‘The group has performed strongly throughout the first half, then accelerated into the summer and early autumn. As a result, we expect to deliver results for the full year materially ahead of expectations,’ says Tony Brewer, Likewise ceo. The interim dividend was increased by a fifth.

Mattress milestone Dreams has topped the 1.3million mark in recycling mattresses. The chain’s take-back scheme has seen its recycling partner Circom process 1,306,414 mattresses since it began in 2015: more than 42,000tonnes of material. Laid end-to-end, the mattresses would have stretched about 1,533 miles: more than two and a half times the distance from John O’Groats to Land’s End. ‘Reaching 1.3 million mattresses recycled

demonstrates what can be achieved when responsible and compliant recycling is built into the customer journey,’ says Richard Allsopp, Circom director. ‘Every mattress contains materials with value beyond their first use, and we're continually exploring new opportunities to recover and repurpose those resources.’ According to Dreams’ 2026 Sleep Survey, 38% of UK adults take their old mattress to the tip.

DFS takes market share to 40% DFS Group has seen order intake drop by 2.5% over the past quarter, which the DFS and Sofology owner says is ‘in line with our expectations notwithstanding extreme weather affecting footfall and upholstery consumer demand in July and August.’ The group also says that it has now increased its market share of the UK upholstery market to 40%. ‘The performance delivered in FY26 demonstrates the fundamental strength, agility and resilience of the DFS Group. By maintaining disciplined cost management, improving gross margins to 58% and empowering our colleagues through data and technology, we delivered robust earnings growth and significantly strengthened our balance sheet,’ says Tim Stacey, DFS Group ceo. ‘Looking ahead into FY27, market uncertainty continues to influence consumer confidence and footfall, and we remain appropriately cautious regarding the broader macroeconomic environment. However, our scale, culture and technology investments – fuelled by our new purpose and values – provide a clear advantage. ‘We remain confident in our ability to outperform the market and deliver moderate profit growth in FY27, where we are comfortable with current analyst PBT forecasts [of £48m]. Looking further ahead, we remain fully focused on achieving our medium-term £1.4bn revenue and 8% PBT margin targets and creating sustained, long-term value for all our stakeholders.’ Sales in the year again topped £1bn, rising 2.6% to £1.057bn, with pre-tax profits £10m higher at £43.7m.

Feel the Care, says United United Carpets and Beds has launched its latest major advertising campaign, focusing on the company’s commitment to putting its customers first. ‘Care You Can Feel’ is the most ambitious campaign yet for the UK’s largest franchised flooring and bed chain, combining its biggest television production with a multi-channel nationwide campaign. ‘Buying a new carpet, flooring or bed

isn’t something you do every day. So it deserves to feel a little different,’ says Phil Grayson, United procurement director. ‘More care, more confidence, more than just a transaction. That’s the thinking behind “Care You Can Feel”. A celebration of the advice and support customers receive throughout their journey.’ The campaign will be broadcast across ITV and Channel 4, as well as YouTube, social media and digital channels.

‘Credible path’ for Headlam ‘There remains market demand for the business,’ and the proposed restructuring ‘provides a credible path to stabilising the business,’ according to one of Headlam’s administrators. ‘The feedback we've received from customers and suppliers in recent days reinforces that there remains market demand for the business,’ Will Wright, Interpath UK ceo and joint Headlam administrator said on his appointment on 8 September. ‘Our focus is on implementing a restructuring that will give Headlam the best chance possible of recovery. Subject to the ongoing support of the group’s key stakeholders, including customers and suppliers, we believe the proposed plan provides a credible path to stabilising the business.’ Interpath has closed 28 of the 76 trade counters – which retailers complained the group was using to sell to builders and consumers – with the loss of 154 jobs. It says it will trade the remaining counters and 17 distribution centres. The group is holding redundancy interviews with staff, although details have not been confirmed. Staff made redundant by Interpath will receive limited monies from the UK Government.

Show moves Flanders Flooring Days is to rebrand as European Flooring Days, switch to a biennial schedule and trim its days to three. It will continue with the format of showrooms and the Kortrijk Xpo exhibition centre, from 21-23 March 2028. The show will alternate with German exhibition BAU, and run from Tuesday to Thursday. INDX National Flooring Show has been retimed as a summer event it seeks to find a sustainable identity. Its future had been in doubt after May’s edition came just weeks after the debut The Flooring Show South and drew disappointing visitor numbers, despite finally introducing Sunday as its first day. Organiser AIS has now moved the show to a mid-week format: 9-10 June (Wednesday and Thursday).

people

Ian James, European Floorlaying Championship winner, NICF council member for two decades and Fitter of the Year head judge, died on 12 September surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. He was 59. He was an exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable floor fitter, with Master Fitter status in carpet, domestic sheet vinyl, LVT and resilient sheet vinyl. His ability as a fitter was recognised throughout his career. He was a finalist in the original Carpet Fitter of the Year competition and was twice named Midlands Floorcovering Fitter of the Year. One of his greatest competitive achievements came in 2005, when he was part of the UK Team that won the European Floorlaying Championship. James became a member of NICF in September 1996 and went on to make a significant contribution to the organisation, serving in a number of important roles throughout his membership. He was elected to its council in September 2006 and remained a council member until his death. He served as vice-president from 2010-2012, before becoming

president and serving two terms in office. He was instrumental in the return of the Fitter of the Year competition in 2016, following a gap of 15 years. He was also a FITA council member and an instructor for FITA for many years. He shared his considerable knowledge in other areas of the industry too, working as an independent flooring inspector and as an NVQ assessor. His practical knowledge, technical ability and commitment to high standards made him highly respected by his fellow professionals. He was someone who believed strongly in doing things properly and in supporting the development of the flooring industry, and particularly the domestic sector. Despite his illness, James attended the Fitter of the Year semi-finals in June. He loved the competition and was delighted to be well enough to attend. He had a very busy few days, judging, chatting to so many friends and colleagues, and there were some giggles along the way as he demonstrated his wicked sense of humour.

Coonan secures top spot at Heal’s Sarah Coonan, former Liberty retail md, has succeeded Hamish Mansbridge as ceo of Heal’s. Mansbridge told guests at the chain’s Dinner with the Designers event last month that a combination of personal events had led him to decide now was the ‘right time to step away. It has been a real honour [but] it’s the time to hand over the metaphorical reins.’ Coonan said it was a ‘privilege’ to become just the 16th person to run Heal’s. During his 11 years in charge, Mansbridge oversaw a return to profitability for

the 215-year-old company – including a shake-up of its non-London branches and the multi-million pound refurbishment of its flagship Tottenham Court Road, London store – and modernised the brand while retaining its focus on design and new designers. Coonan joined Liberty as an assistant buyer in 2010, where a series of promotions saw her become beauty buyer, then head of buying for beauty, home and Little Liberty, strengthening Liberty’s reputation as an incubator for independent and niche beauty brands; and

ultimately buying director. In 2022 she became md of retail, where she delivered a 20% uplift in sales and doubled profits, along with refurbishment projects and modernisation of the £200m business. In January she left, saying she was seeking ceo roles. ‘After 15 incredible years at Liberty, I’ve decided to step down as md. I have no words for how much this place has given me and the amazing people it’s brought to my life. I joined as an assistant buyer in 2010 and leave as md which still blows my mind! What a wild ride it’s been,’ she said.

Honesty every time Consumers have a right to see independent reports, so giving one-sided responses could prove costly

At the conclusion of every customer visit, I go through a few points to try and manage expectations. I usually advise that the report will take about two weeks and that it will be sent only to the person or company who has commissioned it. I aim to identify what’s gone wrong, but not to decide what should, or even might, happen next. I don’t act as an arbitrator, and different parties to a contract may have different legal rights that can only be determined by a court if the parties are not able to agree a way forward. Most consumers still ask me if I’m going to send them a copy. Unless they are the ones who have commissioned the report, the answer has to be ‘no’. My reports are independent, so who is paying makes no difference to my findings, but the payer has the right to read the report and choose how and when it is circulated, including the right to disregard the report and pretend it doesn’t exist, and I have known this to happen on two occasions over the last decade. Both times, the result was that the payees tried to find a different consultant who would agree with them for the right price. The cases did not end well from their point of view. Yesterday I received a call from a consumer whose kitchen I inspected about a month ago. The consumer had hosted me, so was well aware of my visit but knew nothing about my opinion as I don’t share this during an inspection. They had then received a letter from the retailer – by snail mail rather than a more immediate method – to say the issue was clearly down to the condition of their home so the retailer was rejecting the complaint and was not prepared to enter into further correspondence.

16

Interiors Monthly October 2026

I knew, but could not say to the consumer, that this was a completely unreasonable response to my report. The issues I had identified would have been obvious at the time of fitting and the installer should have done what was necessary to ensure they were rectified so they would not affect the products. In this case there may have been some additional works, but these could have been discussed and agreed before the work proceeded, but the installer ploughed on and did a less than satisfactory job. I asked the consumer whether they had been sent a copy of my report. The retailer had withheld it. I pointed the consumer to the Citizens Advice website, where full details are given of consumers’ rights under current data protection regulations. If necessary, a consumer can insist on copies of all documents relating to their ‘file’, including the independent report they knew had been done. Today I received a call back. When the consumer had contacted the retailer using the information obtained from the Citizens Advice website, the retailer’s attitude changed immediately. The consumer had been sent a copy of my report by email, and the retailer had taken another look at the complaint and was ready to discuss how everything could be sorted. The retailer’s response was critical to how things went forward. A refusal could have resulted in a complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Office, in addition to possible legal action. The costs would have mounted, and ICO issues are covered under criminal law, which is very different to civil law, dealing with breaches of contract between a retailer and consumer. The

My advice to consumers is to persist until they obtain a full copy of my report

costs of any civil remedy could have been made to look small against fines for a breach of data laws. Whilst I do not send copies of my reports to any third parties without authorisation, I do assure consumers my reports are sent as pdf documents so changes are difficult without the right software and are tracked in the metadata of the file. A consumer can therefore be sure it has not been edited when they receive a copy. If they are sent selected quotes, rather than the full report, I cannot tell them the missing information, but I can advise them to persist until they see the full version so they have the whole story. SUSTAINABILITY

Breaking the link GRTS could provide greater financial stability but would see further price rises The latest textiles environmental standard could end carpet companies’ pricing link to oil prices and provide greater financial stability but would see further price rises. While consumers and manufacturers already have a multitude of standards and schemes to ensure products meet their green and ethical concerns – such as GOTS (of which Riviera Home is the only UK holder), GUT, Green Label Plus and OEKO-Tex – Global Responsible Textiles Standard (GRTS) brings in new levels of clarity and demands. GRTS certification can apply to natural, recycled and regenerated fibres, with products containing at least 90% recognised responsible fibres. Full traceability is required, with an identitypreserved chain of custody and all fibre inputs registered in the Global Fibre Registry. Independent audits by approved third-party certification bodies are needed annually. The standard saw its first consultation in July 2025, with feedback submitted to the organisation behind it, Global Standards, this April. In order to be a recognised responsible fibre, they must be non-GMO; free of highly hazardous pesticides: farming practices must restrict dangerous chemicals; follow animal welfare rules: for animal fibres such as wool, practices like mulesing are banned; and have

18

Interiors Monthly October 2026

identity-preserved traceability: materials must be kept physically separate from conventional materials through the supply chain. According to the GRTS eligible fibres list, a product can achieve certification if at least 90% of its composition is made from approved programmes, such as: recycled content – fibres certified under the Global Recycled Standard or SCS Recycled Content Standard; responsible cotton – material verified by the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) or REEL Cotton; responsible animal fibres: wool or mohair verified by Textile Exchange’s Responsible Wool Standard or the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA); and sustainable forestry – fibres such as viscose or lyocell that meet Forest Stewardship Council or PEFC criteria. Virgin oil-based synthetic materials such as polypropylene or polyester cannot be classified as a responsible fibre, but can be used in GRTS certified products if they make up 10% or less of a product’s total weight. Traditional 80/20 blend carpets would need to replace at least half of the polypropylene (by total product weight) with a responsible fibre, such as recycled nylon or recycled polyester (PET), often sourced from plastic bottles. Making such a switch would also allow ranges to be certified with

the newest standard, even though they would fall short of Global Recycled Standard (GRS) as just a fifth of the product is from recycled materials: virgin wool does not count towards GRS. Under GRTS certification, fluorochemical or perfluorinated coatings often used for stain resistance are not allowed. Instead of PFAS, companies would have to rely on the inherent stain-resistant, hydrophobic nature of polyester, or use strictly approved, non-fluorinated, polymerbased green alternatives. Chlorinated and brominated (halogenated) flameretardant chemicals are also off the agenda, due to their tendency to bioaccumulate and release toxic gases. Solution-dyed Econyl nylon and polyester will meet the chemical criteria as regards stain resistance while GUT certification restricts hazardous emissions and volatile organic chemicals, with manufacturers using inert mineral fillers in backings. Companies producing wool-rich carpets have long highlighted aspects such as moth and stain resistance thanks to topical treatments. These chemical treatments would have to be audited, if they are not already, to be GRTS certified. Manufacturers would also have to switch from virgin petrochemicalsourced fibres to recycled

SUSTAINABILITY polyester or recycled polypropylene: as is happening in Europe. Rug companies are nearer GRTS certification than the carpet sector, with many products using recycled materials as shoppers demand machine washability and eco-conscious price points. However, they would have to ensure overseas supply chains were fully certified to track the chain of custody from the recycling plant to the UK distribution centre. Achieving GRTS certification would likely bring financial stability for producers: they would no longer be tied to the price of oil. The sharp rises in oil prices seen in the spring as a result of the ongoing US–Iran war saw many manufacturers halt the introduction of new ranges because of the cost of sampling and fears that the collections would soon have to be sold at a higher price than their

20

Interiors Monthly October 2026

specification merited. Price lists were also being near-constantly updated as polymer chip prices jumped. Sourcing recycled polyester or recycled nylon decouples the raw material supply chain from immediate crude oil fluctuations.

However, such a move to GRTS certification will see higher costs. Recycled nylon 6.6 suitable for carpets is 20%–30% more expensive than virgin nylon, despite continuing high oil prices, and recycled polyester (rPET) derived from plastic bottles commands a 10%–15% premium over virgin polyester. This would see trade prices rise by 3%–5%. Adding a recycling premium would push a standard twist carpet into luxury price brackets. For makers targeting the value synthetic carpet sector, who have already been hit by the higher oil price, GRTS certification is likely to see trade prices rise by about 10%. Manufacturers contemplating GRTS certification are likely to be those at the very top end – effectively introducing an additional Better than Best pricing tier with an ultra-luxury, hypersustainable statement product. Even then, such introductions are unlikely to appear until 2027, by which time lower oil prices could make such a switch even more of a premium introduction across all price points, given the differing cost of virgin and recycled fibres. Calls for such a switch are also likely to meet with claims that consumer demand is insufficient and that manufacturers are unprepared for the new standard – despite signs that support for greener products remains strong among bed buyers, according to the NBF’s latest consumer research, and the fact that sales of organic certified textiles grew by more than 10% in 2025 according to the Soil Association. Durability rules How a floor performs is key to Luxury Flooring’s approach Durability doesn’t sound as exciting as design, but for households actually buying flooring, it’s often the deciding factor. Nearly half of Luxury Flooring’s customers have a dog or a cat and almost as many are raising children in the home. Families with children make up the largest single household segment (47%) among recent customers of the £36.2m (£27m) turnover Lanca group. Couples without children are the next biggest segment at 33%. Add in the fact that roughly half of customers have a dog or a cat, and it becomes clear that the LVT, laminate, engineered and solid wood etailer is selling to a market of busy households where a floor needs to hold up to daily traffic, muddy paws, dropped toys and the occasional spill.

That context reframes what ‘the right floor’ means to most shoppers, says Declan Christie, Luxury Living director. ‘It’s not just an aesthetic choice. It’s a practical one, made by people who know exactly what their home will

28

put that floor through. ‘When customers were asked to name their top three factors in choosing flooring, durability came in at 55%, closely behind design at 68% and price at 67%. That’s a meaningfully high

number for a factor that’s often treated as secondary to how a floor looks in a catalogue photo. ‘It also shows up in how people talk about their purchase. Customers explicitly cite durability/longevity of the product as a reason they choose Luxury Flooring. Plus, it’s one of the more commonly mentioned decision drivers alongside price and appearance. For a household with kids and pets, durability isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a requirement. ‘This practical mindset lines up neatly with what people are buying. Engineered wood and LVT are by far the two most purchased flooring types as they’re both known for holding up better to moisture, scratches and heavy footfall. Customers aren’t just choosing what looks best in the sample box either. They’re choosing what they trust to survive in a family kitchen or a hallway with a dog running through it all day.’ The most common space Luxury Flooring’s customers order flooring for is the living room at 34%. Kitchens follow at 15% and bedrooms at 10%. A

customers aren’t decorating an empty showhome. They’re fitting a home that already has muddy boots, toy cars and a dog by the door. Durability isn’t competing with design for attention: instead, for most buyers, it’s the price of entry before design gets to make its case at all,’ says Christie. Visit: luxuryflooring.co.uk

‘With so many customers raising kids, living with pets or both, a few things follow naturally when it comes to how retailers need to talk about their products,’ says Christie. ‘Lead with durability claims as confidently as design claims. With 55% of buyers naming durability a top three factor, it isn’t a footnote to the aesthetic pitch. It deserves equal billing in product copy, especially for rooms like kitchens, living rooms and hallways. ‘Speak directly to pet owners and parents. Half the customer base has a dog or cat and nearly half are raising children. Product pages and marketing that explicitly address scratch resistance, moisture tolerance and cleaning ease aren’t a niche add-on – they address the issues most customers face. ‘Let samples do double duty. Because texture and quality checks are already the second most important reason people order samples, framing that same sample as a chance to judge real-world resilience could reinforce a decision customers are already primed for.’

Pavilion Panels in Cocoa Après Oak

Interiors Monthly October 2026

Karndean Designflooring has added to its Van Gogh collection with a new format and three extra designs. Pavilion Panels – Karndean’s most ambitious parquet-style innovation – is its answer to the ever-growing appetite for parquet-style flooring without the complexity of traditional installation. Each 24in x 24in panel can be laid in either a diamond or diagonal cross configuration, meaning two completely different looks are achievable from a single format, with no specialist cutting or complex layout required. The diamond configuration brings a sense of grandeur to homes: the kind of floor that anchors a high-ceilinged hallway or stretches across an open-plan kitchen-diner, creating a natural focal point without overwhelming the space. The diagonal cross reads as more graphic and contemporary, lending geometric structure to rooms that want rhythm over drama. Both configurations work equally well in period homes and modern interiors. Pavillion Panels is available in the new Après Oak’s three colourways – Honey Après Oak, Cocoa Après Oak and Sable

Après Oak, and can be framed with matching Van Gogh planks or small planks. Pavillion Panels has a 3mm gluedown construction, micro bevel detailing and a 0.55mm wear layer, at a price point consistent with the rest of the Van Gogh range. Après Oak was inspired by charactergrade Bavarian oak from southern Germany and reflects the drama of Alpine conditions: the seasonal extremes and the slow growth that shapes timber at elevation. Its three shades span honeyed gold and caramel through to rich tobacco. It also boasts a new embossed finish, with the prominent oak grain changing as it catches the light, giving each plank depth and variation. Après Oak is available in 48in x 7in planks and 18in x 4.5in herringbone along with Pavilion Panels. Indy Urban Elm takes its inspiration from the urban forests of Indianapolis, a city where elm trees line the streets and the forest trails stretch out beyond. Karndean’s designers drew on the spirit of the Detroit and Indiana timber trade to create a floor with rural roots, and the result is a design that feels entirely rustic and natural. Indy Urban Elm has a distinctive, varied grain, and natural imperfections – including knots and twists – are celebrated rather than concealed. It is available in 48in x 7in planks and 18in x 4.5in herringbone formats. Already one of the most popular designs in the Van Gogh range, Natural

Cocoa Après Oak in 48in x 7in planks

Prime Oak has two new colourways for 2026: a lighter toned Linen Prime Oak and rich Truffle Prime Oak. Both are available in plank and herringbone formats and have been developed in direct response to customer demand and retail sales data showing continued growth in warm, natural wood tones. ‘Retailers are faced with more choice than ever, and we want to bring a more refined choice that truly meets the needs of customers. This collection has been curated to offer clarity and confidence in-store without being overwhelming. ‘We also want to make introducing

our new designs as easy as possible for our retail partners, supported by our Xplore and Xplore+ POS displays. It’s about helping retailers present the collection in a way that feels intuitive and engaging for customers, ultimately making it seamless to shop for flooring,’ says Richard Allen, Karndean Designflooring VP of retail sales. ‘We’re particularly proud of our new nature-led designs and the stories they tell. Pavilion Panels represents our most ambitious parquet-style innovation. It enables retailers to offer a large-scale parquet look within a single panel.’ Visit: karndean.com

Pattern as play

Curio Navy in pattern A

Curio is a patterned tile that puts personality in your hands Karndean Designflooring’s Curio reimagines what patterned floors can look and feel like. Launching alongside and also part of the Knight Tile range is Empire Marble, a striking version of the popular chequerboard marble look. Curio is built around a single idea: pattern should feel like play, not pressure. Each 9in x 9in tile carries a tessellated geometric design that, by its nature, creates pattern through repetition. Rather than requiring different tiles, complex layouts or a designer’s eye, by simply rotating Curio tiles or experimenting with orientation, an almost infinite range of personalised outcomes can be achieved. It is what design-forward homeowners

are calling pattern rotation: the ability to engineer a completely personal floor from a single tile, with nothing more than a change of direction. The effect is somewhere between a puzzle and a design studio. It is approachable, immediate and deeply engaging for style-conscious homeowners who want their spaces to feel genuinely individual. Available in four colourways – Sage, Navy, Graphite and Terracotta – and four patterns, Curio has been designed to work across living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and halls. Unlike patterned encaustic tiles or parquet flooring, Curio doesn’t require specialist installation, complicated cutting or design expertise to achieve a result that looks considered

A chequerboard floor is an enduring classic

and creative. The compact format is particularly suited to smaller spaces, adding feature and interest without overwhelming a room. The design gives a modern, shareable quality: bold enough to anchor a colourdrenching scheme, graphic enough to hold its own in a maximalist interior, and versatile enough to work with natural tones where the floor does the talking. Empire Marble is a 12in x 12in blackand-white marble-look tile that delivers one of interior design’s most enduring classics: the chequerboard floor. Every box contains an equal number of black and white tiles, removing the guesswork from calculating quantities and making a balanced layout straightforward to achieve without specialist knowledge. Like all Karndean floors, both designs are 100% waterproof, scratch and scuffresistant, and warmer and quieter underfoot than real ceramic tiles. They are available in gluedown format and are backed by Karndean’s lifetime residential warranty. Visit: karndean.com

Taking the temperature Picking the correct product where temperatures have potential to fluctuate ‘Extreme temperatures or temperature fluctuations can cause floorcoverings to expand and contract significantly. This is frequently the case in heavily glazed areas such as conservatories that are subject to solar gain during the day and then rapidly cool at night. Over time, this can lead to unsightly tenting and gapping at the edges of floorcoverings, particularly between adjacent vinyl tiles or planks. Once fully cured, temperaturetolerant adhesives hold floorcoverings firmly in place, restricting these movements and ensuring that flooring installations maintain their aesthetic appearance for years to come,’ says Andy Mees, F Ball technical service officer. The availability of temperaturetolerant adhesives raises questions about exactly where they need to be used, with some confusion about why a temperature-tolerant adhesive is required to install LVTs in conservatories but not over underfloor heating. F Ball’s technical service department answers calls from installers who believe it is necessary to use a temperature-tolerant adhesive to install floorcoverings where underfloor heating is present when, in fact, it is not always required. ‘This is because temperature fluctuations as a result of underfloor heating systems are much more gradual and less extreme than changes in temperature resulting from solar gain, which can result in swings of 60degC. To meet British Standards guidelines for resilient and textile floorcoverings, underfloor heating systems should not exceed 27degC at the bond line. Temperature-tolerant adhesives are

Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS is a water-based, pressure-sensitive adhesive

All F Ball adhesives can be used over underfloor heating

therefore only always necessary where there are heavily glazed areas, including conservatories and areas with floor-toceiling windows, such as extensions fitted with bi-fold doors. F Ball’s full range of adhesives can be used over all kinds of underfloor heating,’ says Mees. ‘Where a temperature-tolerant adhesive is required, there are a number of options. Wet-lay temperature-tolerant adhesives are available for installing LVT in areas that will be exposed to high temperatures and are available with a range of additional properties. Styccobond F48 PLUS, for example, is a fibre-reinforced, high temperature grade adhesive for installing a range of vinyl floorcoverings. The fibres in Styccobond F48 PLUS allow it to offer high initial grab to hold floorcoverings securely in place during installation. It is also fast drying, and as a one-part solution there’s no mixing required before application.’ When installing LVT, the benefits of pressure-sensitive adhesives, which form an instant grab upon contact, are useful and are ideal for installing floors featuring intricate patterns and bespoke designs that need precise alignment. They also offer a long open time, reducing the risk of late placement. ‘Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS is a waterbased vinyl adhesive with the familiar characteristics of a pressure-sensitive adhesive, which develops the extremely

high bond strength and dimensional stability required to hold vinyl floorcoverings firmly in place in areas exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations, from 60degC to -20degC. Whilst providing high initial tack, the adhesive allows the flooring to be to lifted and repositioned in the initial stages of drying. ‘Styccobond F49 has also been approved for installing vertical flooring accessories, such as PVC skirting, capping and coving, meaning it offers an alternative to traditional contact adhesives. However, unlike contact adhesives, the hybrid adhesive only needs to be applied to one surface. Styccobond F49 is also water resistant, allowing it to be used to install floorcoverings in damp and humid environments, such as kitchens and bathrooms.’ The suitability of an adhesive for use with a particular floorcovering should always be checked. F Ball’s Recommended Adhesives Guide lists adhesives recommended for use with more than 6,000 floorcoverings from over 200 manufacturers. A continually updated version can be found on F Ball’s website and as a free app. F Ball’s technical service department is on hand weekdays from 8.30am–5pm, to answer questions about F Ball products and their use. Interiors Monthly October 2026

Gallery has strengthened its UK distribution and delivery capabilities with the addition of a delivery hub in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, increasing capacity across its transport network ahead of the peak trading season. The hub will strengthen delivery coverage across London and areas north of the Thames, while giving the company greater flexibility to manage growing delivery volumes. The investment will see Gallery’s dedicated home delivery fleet increase to 17 vans during peak trading, operating from four delivery hubs across the UK. This network forms part of Gallery’s wider transport infrastructure, which also includes articulated lorries, 18-tonne vehicles and dedicated technical support vans, supported by its extensive UK warehousing and distribution facilities. ‘Potters Bar is another important step in the continued development of our distribution network. Its location gives us greater flexibility and improved access across a key delivery area, while adding valuable capacity ahead of one of our busiest trading periods,’ says Ciaran Aldous, Gallery operations director. ‘By continuing to invest in our own locations, vehicles and teams, we can maintain greater control over the delivery experience, while building the capacity needed to support our customers as we grow.’ Visit: gallerydirect.co.uk

Natural desire

Dalesman by Abingdon Flooring

Abingdon Flooring offered distinctive choices while looking ahead with Pure Abingdon Flooring’s delustered Dalesman and Cottage Weave explored the desire for natural flooring trends in two distinct ways at The Flooring Show. Dalesman takes a bolder loop approach, bringing depth, character and a more substantial feel underfoot. Its tactile appearance and colour palette have been developed to tap into the desire for relaxed, characterful interiors, while offering everyday practicality. Cottage Weave offers a more

refined interpretation of texture. Taking inspiration from the timeless appeal of natural flooring, it combines a beautifully defined appearance with an understated palette designed to work effortlessly across both contemporary and traditional interiors. The company also looked ahead with a trio of Pure products, set for release around the turn of the year. The polypropylene Pure Opulence and Pure Elegance offer a choice of twist level in

the yarn depending on the level of velvetiness required, while Pure Velvet is a polyester option designed to target the premium wool sector. Celestial is a soft-feel, 1/10th gauge polyester twist. Standout

Bjelin showcased Woodura and POS Bjelin, the Swedish brand behind Woodura hardened wood flooring, had a standout time at The Flooring Show. The stand gave visitors the chance to see Woodura Herringbone 3.0 up close, a collection that brings the strength and water resistance of Woodura technology to one of the most enduringly popular floor patterns on the market. Available in Classic and Modern formats and eight colourways, it clicks together in minutes thanks to the 5G Dry locking system, requiring no glue or nails. Woodura technology allows Bjelin to produce durable, water-resistant, real wood flooring using a fraction of the timber required by traditional methods. The Woodura Plank Collection won the Editor’s Choice Product of the Year (Flooring) award as part of this year’s Interiors Monthly Awards. Also making its debut was the Woodura furniture collection, which applies the same patented technology to dining and coffee tables in two designs, extending the strength and durability of hardened wood beyond the floor. POS was also a key focus, with Bjelin showcasing the display and merchandising materials it offers independent retailers stocking Woodura products. Designed to bring the range to life in showrooms, the package gives customers a tactile way to understand what sets hardened wood flooring apart. The response from visitors was strong, with a UK rollout starting to come to fruition. ‘Bjelin and our Woodura collection is becoming more recognised within the UK, and shows such as The Flooring Show and TFFS only support our market penetration,’ says Simon Darbyshire, Bjelin UK md. ‘Harrogate was a great testament to how the industry is responding to a new technology and the next generation of wood flooring.’ This year marks a decade since Darko Pervan, the Swedish-Croatian inventor behind the world’s first

Opulenza range. Designed for stick-down installation across 2.5mm and 3.0mm profiles, Ferrano offers dependable performance throughout. Charnwood brings refined rusticity to modern and traditional homes, combining warmth, organic detail and long-lasting strength. Highlighted by rich grain patterns, subtle natural knots and a softly brushed texture, the engineered wood range is designed to deliver an authentic timber feel with superior resistance to seasonal expansion. Built with a 10mm thickness and a 3mm real oak wear layer bonded to a multi-ply core, Charnwood features UV-lacquered

and oiled finishes, plus a tongue-andgroove system for efficient floating or fully bonded installation. Tactile and rooted in natural simplicity, Elwood highlights the organic warmth of raw timber tones. Each board undergoes light wire-brushing to draw out the grain’s depth, then is sealed with a protective UV lacquer for a natural, softtouch sheen. Engineered with a robust 14mm construction and a 3mm oak wear layer, Elwood provides decades of refinishable wear. Clockwise: PowerFORCE, Reflections in brushed black and Lumiere

With the force Visitors had plenty of novelty to see, including PowerFORCE Floorwise showed its range of flooring installation products and accessories, including the new PowerFORCE recycled PU underlay. With Manchester-based Floorwise distributor Hathaway Flooring exhibiting at The Flooring Show, retailers and installers making the annual trip to Harrogate had the chance to see the latest introductions from Floorwise. The most recent is PowerFORCE, an underlay designed for demanding residential and commercial carpet installations. Made from recycled PU and available in 6mm and 8mm thicknesses, PowerFORCE is Floorwise’s first underlay to use its Mega+ density: its highest yet. Designed for the ultimate double-stick performance, PowerFORCE is lighter and easier to cut than equivalent rubber crumb underlays, making it easier for installers to use without compromising longevity or performance. Floorwise also showcased its premium Lumiere memory foam underlay. With comfort that customers can feel from the first touch, Lumiere is made using a hand-sorted blend of pre-consumer recycled PU foam and memory foam to give the best of both materials. Floorwise used the exhibition as an opportunity to highlight products including its Pro-Screed range for subfloor preparation; its Max Reflections profiles in the latest brushed black and brushed space grey finishes; Diamond Gripper, and new F596 The Perfect Fix polymer cartridge adhesive. ‘It’s always great to come back to The Flooring Show and speak to the people who use our products every day. New ways

Furlong’s new fitted chevron flooring and (right) the new POS

Furlong re-invested in its POS and laying chevrons For Furlong, The Flooring Show was the opportunity to debut a new way of fitting chevron flooring, as well as

a new way of displaying carpets. By having the chevrons as a compete plank, rather than individual pieces,

fitting is much faster and there is no obvious join on the 14mm plank. Elsewhere in its smooths offer, the European-produced Neptune and Taunus laminates offer waterproof options; Fusion and Urban have new colours, while Emerald has new herringbone styles with European oak designs. Natural Textures combines four polypropylene ranges that are displayed on one POS unit with 40 samples. The display method is patented. The polyester Artisan Living uses the same unit, with Enchantment twist available in three weights; the Saxony Tranquillity has 12 shades, and Shoreline is a 2,000g version, while Celestial is a loop pile carpet. Still capturing hearts Themed displays, a paper gift and animal prints were on show For Hugh Mackay, The Flooring Show was the first anniversary of the budding romance with Victoria that captured Harrogate hearts. In an unexpected move, the couple gave a paper gift rather than receive one, in the shape of the second edition of lifestyle consumer brochure Home by Victoria & Hugh, which was released at the exhibition. The centrepiece of the celebrations was the new Axminster POS stand, which carries all of the Hugh Mackay range. Displayed at the event with a jungle theme, the stand has been created to allow stockists to take a themed approach – such as Nordic or Nautical – to displays, rather than the traditional styling by collection. Wilton Legacy, available in a 4m width, is the company’s latest collection of checks and animal prints. Visit: hughmackay.co.uk Left: Wilton Legacy

Fresh start

Roland Welles: ‘I have developed a passion for flooring’

ITC has new ownership and ‘its signature back’ Some ITC stockists will have known the name Roland Welles before The Flooring Show, but for those who didn’t meet him in Harrogate, he’s the man determined to kick-start the company. Welles had twice been recruited to lead the company, including when a previous md left, so when ITC’s owner indicated he might be interested in selling, Welles secured a like-minded

backer and together they bought the company. ‘Now that ownership is resolved, the company can invest in new product development. We have the support of suppliers and I have confidence in the existing team, both people and suppliers,’ he says. While securing the investment, Welles spent six months developing what will

be the company’s first polyester sisal range. It will have three designs with six shades and be exclusive to ITC. ‘Service is key, and our retailers and suppliers are partners. While I have a background in business management, I have developed a passion for flooring. The company now has a clear direction and ITC has its signature back.’ Visit: itcnaturalluxuryflooring.com

32 exhibitors gathered in Long Eaton and environs for Autumn Long Point, drawing visitors from across the industry. ‘We were delighted with Autumn Long Point. One of the most encouraging things for us is seeing the audience continue to broaden, with the event now attracting visitors from across the wider interiors and furniture industry, rather than predominantly furniture retailers,’ says David Gascoigne, Long Eaton Guild of Furniture Manufacturers chairman. ‘The new reception on the first evening was a real success. It was very well attended and created a great opportunity for exhibitors and visitors to come together in a more informal setting, catch up with existing contacts and make new connections. ‘Long Point has always been about bringing the industry together in Long Eaton, and it was fantastic to see that happening across the three days.’ Visit: longeatonguild.co.uk

Clarity matters From DPR to EPR, the acronyms are multiplying, and so is the need for certainty ‘The UK furniture industry entered 2026 on firmer footing. Spending on furniture rose 3.2% to £20.15bn, according to ONS data analysed in FIRA’s latest Statistics Digest. A recovery rather than a boom, but an encouraging one,’ says Chris Hayward, Furniture Industry Research Association general manager. ‘Change is nothing new to this industry. FIRA has worked alongside retailers, manufacturers and suppliers for almost eight decades. Our purpose has stayed constant: clarity. Through guidance, research and testing, we help the industry know more, and give members certainty when decisions matter. ‘That job is getting bigger. Not least because of the growing number of acronyms. The latest is DPR. Or DPP, depending on which side of the Channel you’re standing. Brussels calls it the Digital Product Passport; Whitehall says Digital Product Records. Both describe a digital record of a product’s origin, materials, repairability and recyclability, designed to support a more circular economy, but two names for one idea creates confusion before anyone understands what it might ask of them. ‘In the EU, furniture passport rules are expected from 2028 and, under the Windsor Framework, will apply in

88

Interiors Monthly October 2026

Northern Ireland. Traceability is arriving by other routes too. From 30 December, the EU Deforestation Regulation will require businesses placing wood products, including furniture, on the EU market to prove they are deforestationfree and ethically produced. ‘Will British businesses ultimately work to one system, or two? For a retailer sourcing from a dozen countries, or selling into Belfast, the question is anything but academic. Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging already touches almost everyone in furniture, retailers more than most, and it is about to enter its next phase. Esther Carter, chief strategy officer at scheme administrator PackUK has said it plans to publish a five-year strategy on the delivery roadmap by the end of the year. The aims – less packaging waste and more recycling and reuse – are the right ones. But EPR is likely to bring additional requirements across the supply chain. Our conversations with the packaging industry are clear: businesses want to understand what EPR will mean. FIRA will be bringing members more knowledge and insight on this in the coming months. As with DPR, the appetite for clear guidance is unmistakable. ‘None of this should simply happen to our industry: policy is shaped by

Chris Hayward

those who turn up. Through the British Furniture Confederation, the industry’s central lobbying and umbrella body, FIRA works with fellow associations to ensure the whole industry is heard, and our technical experts help write the standards that follow. Whether it’s DPR, EPR or the acronym nobody has thought of yet, the aim is to shape what comes next, not simply respond to it. ‘Regulation sets a floor: it tells a buyer what a product must do, not how well it does it. FIRA Gold certification fills that gap. Accessible only to FIRA members, the mark demonstrates that certified products are independently tested, audited and re-tested on an ongoing basis. As retailers are asked to stand behind what they sell, that continuing evidence will count for more, not less. ‘There’s change within FIRA too, all pointing towards greater value for members: practical guides on the standards and regulations behind dayto-day decisions, and research that reaches beyond products and testing to the wider issues that matter most to their businesses. We’re also looking outwards, building an ecosystem that brings together expertise from beyond our world, with new initiatives to foster greater engagement and discussion, and celebrate this industry we all call home. The goal is simple: to help members know more, perform better and prove it. Change is a constant. Clarity should be too.’ Visit: fira.co.uk

Progress made Guardsman UK has seen a year of industry recognition and investment ‘There are certain moments in business when it’s important to pause, reflect and recognise how far you’ve come. For Guardsman UK, 2026 has been one of those years. It has been a year of achievement, investment and progress, but more importantly, it has laid the foundations for an exciting future,’ says Russell Philpott, Guardsman UK md. ‘We have been delighted to receive further industry recognition this year, with awards voted for by retailers, partners and industry professionals. Whilst awards are never the objective, they provide valuable reassurance that the work we are doing is making a positive difference to the businesses and customers we support. These accolades are particularly meaningful because they reflect the trust placed in us by the industry itself. ‘The recognition comes during a period of significant development across Guardsman. Over the past year, we have continued to invest in product innovation, service improvements and operational enhancements designed to strengthen the support we provide

90

Interiors Monthly October 2026

to both retailers and consumers. From exploring more sustainable furniture care solutions to developing new products and refining our service offering, our focus has remained firmly on delivering value and long-term partnership. Alongside this, we have continued to invest behind the scenes in the systems, processes and digital capabilities that help us operate more effectively. These improvements may not always be visible, but they play a vital role in creating a smoother experience for our retail

partners, technicians and customers alike. Simplifying processes, improving responsiveness and making it easier to do business with us remains a key priority. ‘One of Guardsman’s greatest strengths has always been the relationships we have built throughout the industry. Many of our partnerships span decades, and we are proud to work with retailers, suppliers and specialists who share our commitment to raising standards and delivering exceptional customer experiences. Those relationships continue to be at the heart of everything we do. ‘As we look ahead, our ambition is clear. Consumer expectations continue to evolve, technology is creating new opportunities, and the furniture sector must continue to adapt. We will continue to invest in new products, enhancing our digital capabilities, strengthening partnerships and exploring innovative ways to support sustainable growth across the industry. The question we continually ask ourselves is simple: how can we be even better tomorrow than we are today? ‘If you’re attending Autumn Furniture Show in Telford on 7-8 October, we’d love to meet you. Visit the Guardsman team at Hall 2, stand 55, where we’ll be sharing plans for the future, discussing growth opportunities and exploring how we can continue supporting retailers in an evolving marketplace. We look forward to catching up with you and discussing the opportunities ahead for us all.’ Visit: guardsman.co.uk

TRADE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES See how your system performs in the coming months

Ready to hit peak? The key trading season will reveal weaknesses in systems Peak trading season is looming for furniture retailers, and while it is often framed as a test of stock levels, staffing and sales performance, it is also one of the best tests a retailer can put its technology through. When trading volumes increase, small frustrations that are manageable at other times of year can quickly become significant problems. Staff may find themselves entering information twice, checking multiple systems for an answer, working around gaps in functionality or relying on spreadsheets and manual processes. For retailers, what does that actually look like? A customer asks if a particular sofa is in stock; the answer shouldn’t depend on which member of staff they happen to ask, or which system they happen to have access to. ‘We see these “pain points” crop up time and time again: a product price or promotional offer needs updating across several systems. A staff member has to check a spreadsheet because the information in the system isn’t quite enough. An order is re-keyed between systems, creating another opportunity for things to go amiss. None of these issues necessarily brings a business to a standstill, but when they happen hundreds of times during a busy trading period, the cumulative impact can be significant,’ says Georgia Caird, Iconography marketing and client manager. ‘With this in mind, the coming months provide an opportunity to ask: where is

92

Interiors Monthly October 2026

your technology creating friction? Rather than simply monitoring sales, retailers should pay attention to where cracks show when pressure increases. Where are employees duplicating work? Which questions take too long to answer? Are online and in-store teams working from different information? Which processes depend on individual knowledge or workarounds? These are valuable indicators of where technology may be holding the business back,’ she says. ‘Of course, replacing your retail platform isn’t something most businesses sensibly undertake in the middle of peak trading. The opportunity comes afterwards. Taking note of these pain points while they are fresh can provide a practical roadmap and help you be better prepared for the next peak,’ says Mike

Whitman, Iconography head of product. ‘At Iconography, we believe retail technology should support the entire operation rather than forcing retailers to work around it. OMNIS Retail combines ecommerce, EPOS, CRM, product information, stock, purchasing, warehousing and order management, giving retailers a unified view of their business. This year’s peak could be more than a busy trading period. It could be a vital diagnostic exercise, highlighting exactly where your system needs to work harder in 2027. ‘Iconography will be exhibiting at the Autumn Furniture Show at Telford. Visit stand 21 to find out how OMNIS could support your business beyond the next peak.’ Visit: iconography.co.uk/omnis

The right technology Connecting complex operations, removing friction and turning information into better decisions is key ‘Technology is transforming retail, but for furniture and bed businesses the real opportunity is not simply adopting more software: it is using the right technology to connect complex operations, remove friction and turn information into better decisions,’ says Stephen Connolly, Ordorite ceo. ‘Rather than adapting a generic retail platform to fit the furniture sector, Ordorite has been developed specifically around the way furniture retailers operate, bringing POS, inventory, warehousing, deliveries, customer management, reporting, finance integrations and marketing together in one connected system. That connected foundation matters more than ever, because it is what makes an intelligence layer possible. AI is more useful to a retailer when it sits on top of complete, joined-up operational data – and OrdoAI proves this.’ Connolly says for retailers, the benefit is visibility: a customer order created in the showroom can flow through stock allocation and warehouse preparation to delivery, while teams across the business work from the same underlying information. Managers can access live operational data through Vision IQ, while mobile tools support practical tasks including stocktaking, warehouse scanning, delivery tracking and proof of delivery. ‘And because that data is already

94

Interiors Monthly October 2026

structured and connected, it becomes the raw material for OrdoAI to surface patterns and answers that would otherwise take hours of report-building to find. ‘That connected data is now creating opportunities for intelligent automation. Ordorite continues to develop OrdoAI as an intelligence layer within the platform, designed to help retailers get to useful information faster, understand trends and make more informed decisions without introducing another disconnected technology tool.’ Ordorite also connects with the wider technology ecosystem around a retailer. Through Ordo Connect, ecommerce platforms, finance software, logistics providers and other services can communicate with the core retail operation, helping reduce duplication and reliance on manual data entry. ‘The response reinforced what had been evident throughout 2025: retailers are actively seeking smarter, more intuitive systems that help them operate with clarity and confidence, and that’s what we’re doing at Ordorite. That focus on practical technology has been recognised both within the furniture industry and the wider technology sector. Ordorite has now been named Best Retail Software Supplier (Furniture) by Interiors Monthly readers for five consecutive years, while its inclusion in

the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 in 2025 placed it among the fastest-growing technology businesses. ‘But the strongest case for technology is what it enables retailers to do next. As customer expectations rise and margins remain under pressure, disconnected systems and manual processes become increasingly difficult to justify. Retailers need accurate stock information, faster access to performance data, efficient fulfilment and the ability to connect ecommerce, finance, logistics and customer communication without creating more administration. The next generation of retail technology will therefore be less about individual features and more about connection: systems that share information, automate repetitive processes and make complex operations easier to understand.’ Visit: ordorite.com

Materials matter Choice brings innovation and consideration Upholsterers and product designers have more material options available to them than ever before. While this creates exciting opportunities for innovation, it also makes material selection increasingly important. ‘Choosing the right combination of materials can have a significant impact on product performance, customer satisfaction and overall commercial success. The materials specified within an upholstered piece of furniture influence far more than its appearance: they directly affect comfort, support, longevity, resilience and ease of commercial manufacture,’ says John Davies, Peak Converters sales director. Having access to a comprehensive material range ensures Peak’s customers can achieve the desired performance requirements for their products. ‘With a stockholding of about 20 grades of combustion-modified open-cell polyurethane foam, ranging in densities from 23kg to 65kg per cum and hardness levels from 85N to 265N, as well as five densities of reconstituted chipfoam – a highly durable material often selected where exceptional resilience and long-term performance are required – we maintain an extensive range of raw materials.’ Alongside its foams, Peak also holds more than 10 weights of polyester fibre, as well as six grades of compressed insulator fibre. Insulator fibre plays a critical role within furniture construction, providing a protective barrier between support systems such as springs and the finished cushion assembly. These

96

Interiors Monthly September 2026

materials allow the Derbyshire company to create cushions, backs, facings and support platforms that deliver the appropriate combination of comfort, structure and visual appeal. ‘As a specialist foam and fibre converter, we work closely with upholsterers to understand not only their product requirements but also their production processes and practical manufacturing constraints. By combining decades of industry experience with technical knowledge, we help identify the most suitable material solutions while anticipating potential challenges before they arise,’ says Davies. The design and construction of foam and fibre components can have a direct influence on production efficiency, as well as the quality of the finished product. Factors such as frame design, frame construction and fabric specification all play a role in determining the most suitable filling materials. A solution that performs well in theory may become

problematic if it complicates upholstery processes, affects consistency or increases production time. ‘End-use requirements are another crucial consideration. Upholstered furniture designed for a contract environment, where it withstands regular, heavy usage, requires a very different approach to a piece of soft furniture intended only for occasional use. The choice of filling, the expected lifespan of the product, desired comfort levels and budget requirements must all be balanced carefully to ensure the final specification meets both customer expectations and commercial objectives,’ says Davies. ‘Our role in the industry extends beyond simply supplying components. We work as a technical partner, helping upholsterers navigate material choices with confidence, ensuring every decision supports product performance, manufacturing efficiency and long-term value.’ Visit: peakconverters.co.uk

Digital developments Selling care plans online and placing orders has been made easier ‘The way consumers buy has changed. The way retailers sell has changed. Increasingly, the businesses that thrive will be those that make it easier, faster and more convenient for customers to do business with them. At Staingard, we believe the same principle applies to care plans and care products,’ says Robert Jones, Staingard national sales manager. ‘That is why we are investing in digital: not simply because technology is transforming our industry, but because we see a real opportunity to give our retail partners better tools, greater flexibility and a simpler way to add value for their customers. Our latest developments are centred around two key initiatives: a new product ordering facility on the Staingard portal and a

98

Interiors Monthly October 2026

new Shopify plug-in designed to make selling Staingard care plans online easier than ever. ‘For our retail partners, the new product ordering facility represents a significant step forward. Designed with ease of use in mind, it provides a streamlined way to order products, helping to reduce administration and make the process quicker and more efficient. It is part of a wider ambition to make the Staingard portal much more than simply a place to register care plans. We want it to become an essential digital hub for our retail partners: putting the services, products and support they need at their fingertips. ‘As ecommerce continues to become an increasingly important part of the

furniture retail landscape, we also need to ensure that care plan sales can move seamlessly into the online customer journey. Our new Shopify plug-in has been developed with this in mind. For retailers using Shopify, the plug-in will provide a straightforward way to offer Staingard care plans directly through their online store. This means customers can discover and purchase the additional peace of mind they want, without retailers having to create complicated processes or build their own technology. ‘For retailers, that means another opportunity to increase attachment rates and generate additional revenue. For consumers, it means greater choice and the reassurance of being able to protect their purchase in the same convenient environment in which they bought it. ‘We know retailers are busy. We know consumers expect convenience. And we know that successful businesses need partners who can keep pace with those expectations. Staingard’s digital strategy is therefore not about replacing the personal relationships and service that have always been central to our business. It is about enhancing them with technology that makes doing business with Staingard simpler, smarter and more efficient. The future of retail will be increasingly connected, increasingly digital and increasingly customer-led. We intend to be ready for it, and to make sure our retail partners are ready too.’ Email: salesteam@staingard.co.uk

Old and new Materials and fashions may evolve, but the principles of good furniture design remain remarkably consistent

‘I recently visited the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts. While the museum is renowned for preserving the history of the American whaling industry, it was the scrimshaw gallery that unexpectedly captured my attention,’ says Johnny Worthington, Satra commercial business area manager for furniture and floorcoverings. ‘For many people, scrimshaw is associated with engravings on whale teeth and bone, created by sailors during long voyages at sea. However, what fascinated me most was the connection with the production of furniture. One exhibit highlighted the work of Charles H Durgin, who had originally trained as a cabinet maker before embarking on Arctic whaling voyages in the 1860s. While at sea, he produced highly detailed scrimshaw pieces using walrus ivory.

Later, when that material was no longer readily available, he turned his skills to carving cow horns and abalone shells. ‘As I walked around the gallery, I was struck by how many of the skills required to create the exhibits mirrored those used by modern furniture makers. Precision, patience, an understanding of materials and an eye for detail are just as important when crafting a cabinet or chair as when engraving ivory or shell. ‘The furniture displays themselves were equally fascinating. Chairs, washstands and decorative chests combined timber construction with whale bone and ivory elements. What immediately caught my attention was that many of the fundamental design principles remain unchanged today. The pieces still relied on sound joinery, structural integrity and practical functionality. They simply used the materials available at the time. ‘One particularly striking chair incorporated whale bone within its construction. Looking closely at the joints and fixings, I found myself analysing it in exactly the same way that I would assess a modern furniture design. More than a century after it was made, it remains a testament to quality craftsmanship and thoughtful construction. ‘At Satra, we work with furniture manufacturers developing products

The craftmanship evident in the exhibits is mirrored in the work of modern furniture makers

using an ever-changing range of materials and technologies. Yet the same questions still apply today. Is the design fit for purpose? Will it withstand everyday use? Does it deliver the quality consumers expect? ‘My visit to New Bedford served as a reminder that while materials, fashions and manufacturing methods may evolve, the principles of good furniture design remain remarkably consistent. Whether working with the natural materials available in the 19th century or the sophisticated engineered materials used today, craftsmanship, innovation and durability continue to sit at the heart of successful furniture design.’ Visit: satra.com
