EDITOR’S COMMENT
A happier New Year? Consumers want more: shopping that provides entertainment. Would you shop at your store? As I write this my inbox is swelling with the constant arrival of messages imploring me to have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Retailers across the country will certainly be wishing for the latter. Others, of course, will be hoping for clarity over their employment status. 2025 will not go down as a vintage year for the sector, with subdued sales causing consternation amid economic and social uncertainty. There are reasons why 2026 will be a better year. The sofa and recliner that Mrs Johnson splurged on after pandemic lockdowns ended has seen better days, and the carpet and curtains she bought at the same time also need to be changed, for a start. There is also a sense that shopping online may well have peaked (although it’s still going to be vital to all retailers), and consumers want to see and touch their major purchases, as well as finding out more about what is in them and where it has come from. They also want to be entertained: shopping via screen isn’t really that much fun, and with interiors you can never be 100% sure that the colour your customers really want is the one they’ve seen on their phone, or its scale in relation to them, or how comfortable or hardwearing it might be. Local to me, there have been a few closures of large (non-interiors) stores, with rent and business rates bills held responsible. Reaction has been generally of the ‘That’s a shame, there’s nothing on the high street now, it wasn’t very exciting last time I went’ type. If the visiting experience had been just that, those branches may still be open. Would you really like to shop at your store? January, of course, also brings the return of trade shows, including Heimtextil, Domotex and January Furniture Show, while imm Cologne is back on the calendar. Hopefully I’ll see you at some of them.

Bird reveals ‘next chapter’ of Headlam turnaround Headlam is to further shake up its sales network, use trade counters more as collection points, restore local delivery planning and sales offices, and cut product SKUs by more than 40% to improve stock availability as part of its turnaround plan under the leadership of Stephen Bird, Headlam interim-executive chairman. ‘We haven’t provided the service that our independent customer deserves, and I'm very sorry for that. Because of the strategy that we pursued, we have lost some core independent flooring retail and contractor business, which is really important to us. Some of that was clearly self-inflicted, some was due to challenging marketing conditions, and some was down to a capable and aggressive competitor who has taken advantage of the
fact that we were distracted,’ says Bird, speaking exclusively to Interiors Monthly. The shake-up of the sales team, which is subject to an ongoing redundancy consultation across the group, is set to see retailers have one rep covering both Mercado distributed products and Headlam brands. Crucial Trading and Florprotec will continue to have separate teams. ‘We are refocusing on independent retailers and contractors. We need to improve our service levels and provide a great, great proposition with the benefits of our purchasing power and range. We've had some positive and encouraging feedback from retailers. They now want to see action,’ he says. See pages 28-32 for the interview.

Amanda Holden: comfortable with DFS
Just Husk Kitchen replacement company Husk has opened its first stand-alone store, and second after its factory showroom, on Bristol’s historic city centre Christmas Steps. The new site also houses office and meeting spaces across the upper floors, creating a central hub for the design and operations teams. Husk makes made-to-order doors, cover panels, worktops and hardware for kitchen units from the likes of Ikea and Howdens. ‘From day one, the goal was to make beautifully made kitchens more accessible. Customers plan the layout with a mainstream supplier, then we craft the finishing elements that deliver the quality, detail and individuality of a bespoke kitchen,’ says Dave Young, Husk co-founder.

DFS is to widen its brand offer with an Amanda Holden collection this spring. Working with the retailer’s design team and manufacturer The Branded Furniture Company, the broadcaster helped curate a collection that captures her love of luxury while staying true to family living. ‘I wanted a range that made me feel proud when hosting. Every style in the collection has those little touches that I love: a bit of glamour, a bit of fun, and loads of comfort,’ she says.
Revamp continues Harvey Jones has continued its refurbishment programme with the re-opening of its Guildford and Cambridge stores. Guildford now features 11 of the chain’s most popular hand-crafted kitchen designs, along with a design lounge for customer consultations, media wall displays, corner pantry and cloakroom – part of Harvey Jones’ product expansion. Cambridge has a design lounge, three kitchen displays, laundry area, coffee station, media unit and home office. Eight stores have now been revamped.
Nine new freemen have joined The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing industry charity and City of London livery company. warmth, lime paint finishes to add artisanal texture to walls, and abstract patterned wallpapers from the brand’s new collection. Deep, rich wall and ceiling tones create an elegant contrast that enhances the materials, forms and colours of the collections. The facade has been redesigned and modernised, offering greater visibility of the interior and a contemporary look that aligns with the brand’s refined aesthetic. Roche Bobois has 364 stores – both owned and franchised– in 54 countries.
Delivery promise A move to a new distribution centre will allow Furniture Village to offer quicker deliveries, according to the retailer. It has opened the 168,000sqft centre next to its previous 96,000sqft unit in Milton Keynes. The investment will ‘double logistical capacity and support hundreds of existing and new jobs, while unlocking faster delivery times for customers, strengthen service nationwide and give the business the scale it needs to support rising order volumes.’ The new facility also has 16,000sqft of office space and a bespoke training facility. ‘Securing our new national distribution centre gives us the capacity and flexibility to keep pace with customer demand while investing in the future of our team. By increasing our fastdelivery stock and streamlining our operations, we’re able to offer customers a quicker, smoother experience from purchase to delivery, wherever they are in the UK,’ says David Ayers, Furniture Village operations director.

PBDE levels drop by half with flame-retardant-free upholstery Changing upholstery for flame-retardant-free versions sees concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the bloodstream drop by half in under a year and a half. A study published in Environmental Pollution into the effects of the Californian flammability standards – which saw upholstery made from 1970–2014 resist open flames – found that participants who swapped saw their blood concentrations of PBDEs drop by half in 1.4 years. Due to the overall declining use of these chemicals, levels in participants who did not replace furniture dropped as well, but two to four times more slowly, according to the study by California Department of Public Health and five others. ‘This study shows that the update not only changed what goes into furniture: it changed what goes into people’s bodies,’ says Kathleen Attfield, the study’s co-lead author and a research scientist supervisor at California Department
of Public Health. ‘Through biomonitoring, we can assess how policy changes and consumer choices can work together to lower exposures to toxic chemicals.’ The study also measured organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), a class of PBDE replacements also used to meet the old standard, but found that these chemicals did not follow the same trend: likely because these chemicals are harder to track over time, according to the study. In addition, people could also be exposed to OPFRs that continue to be used in other products like vehicles and electronics. The authors expressed concern about these uses, as OPFRs are also linked to neurodevelopmental and other harms. Other ways to reduce flame-retardant exposure centre around dust and include washing hands often, especially before preparing or eating food, reducing dust levels in homes with wet cloths, and using a vacuum cleaner with a high-efficiency particulate air filter.

The retailer and supplier was commissioned to create a unique design for the bookshop in the newly renovated Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery, London. A Rum Fellow co-founder and creative director Caroline Lindsell’s design takes inspiration from the intricacy of the traditional tiled floor throughout the original galleries: in particular, the geometry, scale and natural formations within the marble and the juxtaposition of decorative craftsmanship with ironwork details.

MFI has seen ‘a very encouraging’ response from shoppers since its soft launch in the summer. The brand remains on course for a full launch next July, and has an average Trustpilot score of 4.7. Parent company Victorian Plumbing says MFI ‘is already demonstrating conversion rates in line with group benchmarks, validating our strategic approach.’ The product offer includes a selection of textiles, rugs, home decor and freestanding furniture. Victorian Plumbing says that it still expects MFI to lose £2.6m-£3.4m in 2025/2026 and investment ‘remains disciplined’. The group also says that bathroom flooring and tiles now account for 6% of turnover, after sales jumped by 42% to £17.6m in the year to 30 September.

Ethical and sustainable Silentnight has become the fourth UK bed manufacturer to achieve B Corp status Silentnight has become a Certified B Corporation, marking a major milestone in the manufacturer’s longterm sustainability journey. It is only the fourth UK bed company to achieve the standard. B Corp certification is one of the world’s most respected standards for ethical and sustainable business. Companies must undergo a rigorous assessment by the non-profit B Lab, demonstrating high performance in five areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customer impact. Businesses must score 80 points or above to receive accreditation:

Silentnight received 89.8 points after a detailed audit spanning all aspects of the business from product design, material sourcing and energy use to waste reduction, employee wellbeing and community engagement. ‘For Silentnight, the certification is far more than a badge. It represents a formal recognition of values the business has upheld for decades. As the UK’s largest bed manufacturer, we have long prioritised responsible production, pioneering innovations in recyclable materials, reducing reliance on virgin plastics and investing heavily in UK manufacturing. The B Corp process
provided independent verification of this progress, while also reinforcing commitment to continued improvement,’ says Tracey Bamber, Silentnight ceo. ‘Becoming a B Corp reflects who we are and how we’ve always chosen to operate. It’s an important milestone that recognises the high standards our teams already live by, and it raises the bar for what we’ll achieve next. As a leader within our industry, we have a responsibility to show that commercial success can sit alongside strong environmental and social values. ‘Retailers, suppliers and hospitality groups working with Silentnight can now demonstrate alignment with internationally recognised ESG standards, respond to growing consumer demand for ethical brands, and benefit from a supply-chain partner committed to long-term sustainable innovation.’ Silentnight will be assessed for recertification in 2028, a process that demands measurable progress. ‘With continued investment in responsible sourcing, and sustainable product development, we plan to build on B Corp success and lead the sector towards a more responsible future,’ says Bamber. Dilemma Once a fault is found, it cannot be unfound. But what to do?
One staple, and the customer hadn’t even noticed. It was underneath the leather on the front edge of the outside arm, and close to it were two tiny dimples in the leather that were not natural marks but had no obvious cause. What should I do? The customers were an elderly man and his wife. He was quiet and unassuming and quickly disappeared to a back room. The lady was forthright and was demanding a full refund for the two sofas that had been delivered some months before. She was angry that the seat cushions were stretching slightly after use, and when she explained how she had switched them around it wasn’t difficult to grade them in order, with the most puckered corresponding with the most used. ‘Most’ is a relative term: none of the cushions looked bad at all. I did a full inspection of the sofas, even though I knew they were perfectly normal, but then I noticed the staple protruding under the leather, and the two faint marks. The staple had the potential – however unlikely – to wear through, and it was obvious enough to catch the lady’s eye at some stage. The marks were unlikely to be noticed. As usual, I said nothing at the time, but then had to reflect before I put pen to paper. The staple was not part of the complaint. I could ignore it and hope it never got noticed and never became an issue. Conversely, if I noted it in the report, it would become a major issue to the customer from the moment she read about it and looked for it herself. The fact that she hadn’t seen it in the first six months meant it was just a service issue and could not be made a reason for rejecting the suite, but I doubted that she knew, or would accept,
18
Interiors Monthly January 2026
that. What’s more, I knew a repair would require removal of the arm, stripping of the cover and then a two-second tap with a hammer to drive the staple home before refixing the cover and arm. A major job for such a minor issue. What would you want, or expect, me to put in my report? Independent experts have to write reports as if they were to be used in court proceedings, even if no legal claim has been made. A consumer has the right to issue a claim at any point up to six years from delivery, sometimes more in special circumstances. Omitting this discovery could have consequences later, and although there was a risk in raising it, if the matter got resolved the report could be used
later to show the customer had been made aware at this early stage and so there would be little if any ‘cause of action’ for this feature. After much thought I felt I couldn’t leave the issue unmentioned, but needed to make clear it was hardly significant, hadn’t been spotted by the customer and was unlikely to cause any long-term issue. This left it open for the retailer to offer a repair, or to offer a guarantee that if it developed into something more serious they would offer a repair at a later date. Keiran Hewkin on turning six, physical stores and listening to customers Don’t be surprised if 2026 is the year that etailers increasingly make physical store debuts or expansions, following the likes of Swyft, Sofa Club and Love Your Home. ‘The businesses that have been digital first have taken a while to mature to the point in which they’re butting up against the sides of the ecommerce market. Businesses in the most part need to grow in to be healthy. And when you come up against some limitations on that growth, you start looking elsewhere,’ says Keiran Hewkin, Swyft ceo. Originally an upholstery etailer, cabinet and rugs now account for a fifth of sales, and outdoor furniture was added to the mix as Swyft celebrated its sixth birthday on 15 December. ‘You will see a lot more physical stores, as that cohort of businesses matures and realises there is a limit to how much discovery can be done by customers. Online is great for transactions, fantastic for ease, but it’s not great for discovery –
20
Interiors Monthly January 2026
eventually everyone gets that same realisation. Especially with something as tactile as furniture that you just want to touch and feel.’ Some Swyft customers have had the opportunity to do that through concessions in John Lewis since 2021, but there was no Swyft store until October when Islington, north London saw the launch of Store 01. ‘I was always very much of the opinion that as our range has grown, we needed our own space. We started the expansion with real vigour in the second half of 2024, so you have the breadth to justify a larger space of your own. And then it was a case of, okay, we know we want to do it. We know we’ve got the product range, that means we could fill it without it looking too sparse, and we could get the revenue per square foot up. Now, let’s look out for the right opportunity, and be ready to go whenever that opportunity presents itself, because we, well, I’m very aware
that our first store couldn’t be a failure. ‘So, we knew where we wanted it to be, we knew what kind of economics would have made sense, and then it was just about being patient. We were waiting for the right opportunity for about nine months until it came up, then when it did, we went from telling them we’re interested to opening the store in about four-and-a-half weeks. ‘You have to be very careful on that first one, it would have taken us a long time to go again had the first one failed. I take huge risks all the time, that’s my job, but on some you just want to make sure you’ve given yourself every chance of success. You don’t get a second chance on the first one, do you? It all had to go right and it has. It’s been fantastic. ‘The market is tough. We’ve done probably three times more than we expected in our forecast. We’re already confident that the store’s profitable, incremental, and is helping as a halo on the ecommerce side. We figured

out all the bits and bobs on how to replenish it and how to run it and how to staff it. We’re really, really pleased. It’s been a fantastic result.’ November – the first month of being an online and physical retailer – saw sales 51% higher, and Hewkin expects the full year to be up 30% at more than £31m. ‘We’re profitable. So, we’re happy with that, obviously. To be able to grow at that speed and still have a bit left at the end is good, because growth is very expensive. It’s so competitive this market. If you’re growing, you’re having to muscle someone else out. ‘Our bestselling SKU is now a dining chair. The money’s nice, right? But, actually, it’s more about the customer giving the brand permission to go and sell something else, and for them to say “Yes, I’m confident enough in Swyft as a brand to buy my dining table there.” And that’s what I’m most happy about. ‘We’ve done a small buy of outdoor and a small range to start with. We’ll check we’ve got the permission from the customer, check we can deliver it. But it will be the next big category for us. Generally speaking, outdoor furniture looks pretty ugly. And the delivery proposition can be pretty iffy. I think we can make something that’s beautiful and put it through our next-day proposition, so that when the British sunshine decides to come out for a weekend, on a Friday morning, we can get it to you on the Saturday. Our operation plays into it, and if we can stamp our design authority on something, then we’re up for it.’ Swyft’s most common customer is a woman in a relationship in London, who

Very close is the same shopper a decade older, on their second home, or upgrading their first home. ‘We’re quite first-time buyer dependent, and they tend to move and behave slightly differently to the rest to movers, because the pressure to get your first home is consistent, regardless of the economic environment. I don’t care what interest rates are, you don’t want to be sleeping in the room next door to your in-laws for a day longer than you have to, whereas when you’re a mover and a shaker, you optimise because can you put up with having a smaller garage for another year? The whole sector is interest-rate dependent. But I think if I had to pick one, I would probably settle as being overexposed to first-time buyers. I think it’s a little bit easier. ‘You get through the pool of people that are comfortable with buying a high-ticket piece of upholstery online, and you need to continue to grow, and it’s not enough to just be talking to those people that are comfortable with it. You have to meet your customers where they’re at, and if that’s in physical retail, then so be it.’ Given that Swyft’s average sofa sale online is £1,600, viewing is the preferred option for most customers. ‘That’s why most businesses end up maturing to offline. We need access to a wider pool of people. And that’s why we’ve done it. “Where can I see it?” was the top question asked by our customers on live chat for the last two years, every
single week bar about three, so we just listened. We thought, hang on, they might be on to something here. It’s gone down very well, so, the radical thought of the day is listen to your customers.’ Store 02 is very likely to be this year, but location is undecided. ‘Now we’ve got Islington we can say, the samples that go out to N1, what do they convert at? What about SW19, how many samples go? If we just lifted the conversion rate to match Islington, how much would that be worth to us? We haven’t done that analysis, and we’re fairly well served with the John Lewis concessions in London, so we could maybe go somewhere like Edinburgh, Glasgow or Manchester where we don’t have the same coverage.’ Swyft is spending about a fifth of revenue on marketing, and Hewkin thinks this will remain. ‘This industry so competitive. Everyone is marketing margin away. So I would anticipate it probably won’t go much higher than that. But the costs now, as we roll stores out, will be another line, and it’ll be in property and staff rather than marketing. I imagine that’ll always add up to around 20% because that’s what most people spend overall and that’s what you have to spend to compete because you use the same tools to target the same people. ‘One thing we’ve had quite a bit of success with recently, which is new to us, is out of home. We’ve been advertising on the tube and buses and we’ve seen a real lift in consideration. More so than spending the next pound on Facebook or Google. That’s worked really

well, and a bit of direct mail as well and flyers for people’s houses just after they move: what’s working well is the stuff that’s always worked. I do wonder if people are just a little bit done with digital advertising, and that maybe there’ll be a slight shift back towards old school.’ Swyft expanded online to Continental Europe in February, where its access to Polish upholstery production should have been a key advantage in Germany, followed by Switzerland and Austria. But German tastes and its logistics sector had not been fully allowed for. ‘We thought that would be more of an advantage than it has. The reason is that the product that’s gone down really well for us in Germany is our dining collection. It’s over half of the sales there, and we import that from the Far East. So, we have that wonderful advantage, and then the customers have gone: “Oh yeah, great, but by the way, we like your dining chairs.” So, we’ve had to scramble to get enough of those in. ‘We’ve got to where we’d expected from a top-line point of view, I just never would have expected it to be in dining tables and chairs. The most important learning was that once you’re out of the UK, the freight and logistics network is nowhere near as good. The UK has extremely well-serviced freight and lastmile operations. Germany doesn’t so much. So, we’ve only just launched the next-day service in Germany, and that was in partnership with AIT who do our UK next-day service, so we launched that in Germany together. We’ve taken that whole proposition with them because no one there could do it with us. ‘We haven’t brought that back to the UK as learning as such, but when we launched in Ireland in May, we were able

to translate that learning into the Irish market: that helped us get ahead on the challenges we were going to have. Underestimating the strength of the UK logistics network was not something on my bingo card last January, but it’s definitely proven to be true.’ As with any business, mistakes have been made. ‘We launched a made to order offering that was not good. We shouldn’t have done it, we should have kept to the essence of the brand, which was from inventory and fast. We thought it would expand our proposition and allow us to offer more choice, and instead it just confused customers because we had stuff on one lead time and stuff on another. We should never have done that. That’s a big one. ‘We’ve got some designs wrong: 70% of our product has been real hits and 30% hasn’t. So, there’s loads there we could learn from. They were big mistakes. Drifting from your core business is the

beginning of the end, I think.’ Despite those, Hewkin’s expectations in 2019 have long been surpassed. ‘Not in my wildest dreams did I ever believe that Swyft was getting to where it’s been. Its been the privilege of my life. Every day I am grateful to get to come to work and build this company, because this has been wild. There is something about Swyft… whatever it is, Swyft’s got it, and it’s like lightning in a bottle. I don’t know how to describe it or bottle it up and to move it on to another idea: we’re just having our moment in time, and it’s a wonderful thing to be a part of. ‘It was me and some good friends with an idea, and that idea got out of hand, really quickly, and now Swyft is what it is, and it’s a wonderful thing to have been a part of.’ Not that he plans to leave. ‘I’ll ride this wave as long as it carries me, and as long as the people around me will have me.’ Visit: www.swyft.com

Next chapter Retailers want to see results from Headlam’s change of leadership and strategy In October, Stephen Bird moved from Headlam non-executive chairman to interim-executive chairman, as part the group’s move to breathe new life into its transformation plan and repair relations with its core customer base: independent retailers and contractors. In his only media interview, Bird and John Clark, Headlam sales director, discuss what went wrong; listening to customers again; and shaping Headlam's next chapter. ‘I want us to get back to what we're good at, which is looking after the independent retailer. We lost a bit of that entrepreneurial flair, and we became a bit too corporate. We became a bit too strategic, and we brought in people who lacked experience in the flooring market – very capable people, but who didn’t understand what makes the
28

independent retailer tick,’ says Bird. ‘We lost our way a bit. We were chasing key account business, which wasn’t particularly profitable. We opened too many trade counters. Some of the counters worked well with supporting independent retailers, but others didn't, and I can understand that if you're an independent retailer, in a very difficult market, and Headlam opens a trade counter near you, it can be annoying because it looks like we were opening a competitive activity. We didn’t open trade counters to compete with our independent retailers.’ The switch from a sales rep covering one brand over a large area to one rep for several brands across a smaller area will be simplified further: retailers will only have one rep covering both Mercado distributed products and
Headlam Brands, if the proposal is in place when Headlam’s redundancy consultation process ends. Crucial Trading and Florprotec will continue to have separate sales teams due to their bespoke nature. The sales team will remain the country’s largest. (Until the consultation process is complete, the group is unable to comment further.) ‘Retailers were inundated with our reps at various times of the day. To simplify it for customers, we’ll give them one rep, who can keep enhancing that relationship with our customers, many of whom they've known for years. This business is all about relationships. It's a very traditional industry, and we've got to keep giving customers what they want. First of all, listen to them. Five or six reps knocking on their door throughout the week with pretty much the

same samples was an absolute waste of their time and ours. It was inefficient all around,’ says Clark. Deliveries will revert to how they were, with regular drivers and localised route planning, rather than ‘optimised’ central route planning. This should be in place in mid-January, with local sales offices returning later in the month. ‘We’ve put the control back into the local distribution centre. A driver will go on the same route every day, which is what we used to do, so we can build up that rapport with our customers. Our driver is as valuable to our business as our rep because they have regular contact with our customers. I totally agree with that. I’ve been out to a lot of customers, and the thing that was clear was how important the driver is. It’s so important that the truck turns up at the right time, that the driver knows when our customers’ shop is open, can help with unloading and is generally a decent person,’ says Bird. ‘We’ve got great drivers. The centralised route planning system didn’t know when our customer opened, didn't know particularly what the customer
30
Interiors Monthly January 2026
wanted and didn’t ensure that the same driver went back to the same customer. It's small customer challenges like our central planning system that John has identified and addressed. When you take a lot of those little nuances away from retailers, it all becomes a big thing all the time.’ Another topic resolved is customer credit. SKUs will be reduced from 26,000 to 15,000, mainly through reducing
duplication, especially in carpet. Hard flooring ranges will be increased to address historic gaps. As well as making it simpler for retailers, slow-turning products will be removed to ensure that the company can hold more fasterturning products that matter most to retailers. The supplier base is also being consolidated to concentrate volume, with a concentration on a smaller number of long-term partners, improving
STEPHEN BIRD ON REMAINING IN THE EXECUTIVE ROLE: ‘I love the flooring trade, but I'm old bloke now. I worked very hard, I did retire, and my family were pleased about that. My wife was quite pleased about it. Then a year later, I've had to step in with Headlam. ‘I think it's a fantastic opportunity, but I'm not a young Stephen Bird any more, and so no, I don't want to do the job for the long term. But this is a great job, and for someone, I think it'll be quite exciting. We've got a couple of very interested candidates. We are in a good position where we've interviewed two candidates, both of whom want to do the job, both of them are very capable and have got the relevant experience. It should be very exciting for them and the team that we've got running the business. I would like to continue as chairman and support the successful candidate.’

commercial terms and service consistency. ‘‘We buy more flooring in Europe than anyone else. We buy a lot more than most of our competitors put together. That will start to feed through, with competitive pricing for independents in a way that we haven't been able to do. So, hopefully, that's part of why working with Headlam in the future will be attractive,’ says Bird. ‘We don’t need as many ranges as we have previously offered, but we do need the right depth available to customers. When they pick up the phone they want the answer: “Yes, it’s in stock.” When you've got 26,000 SKUs, that's a lot of stock you've got to have in the network to service everybody. You can overfill the market with too much product. Customers want the right service, and that's what matters to us. It's a rationalisation, but still the biggest in the marketplace, and a greater depth of stock – that's where we need to be,’ says Clark. ‘We haven’t provided the service that our independent customer deserves, and I'm very sorry for that. Because of the strategy that we pursued, we have lost some core independent flooring
32
Interiors Monthly January 2026
retail and contractor business, which is really important to us. Some of that was self-inflicted, some was due to challenging marketing conditions, and some was down to a capable and aggressive competitor who’s taken advantage of the fact that we were distracted,’ says Bird. ‘We are refocusing on independent retailers and contractors. We’re not out chasing volume with big national retailers any more. We’re pausing what we’re doing on trade counters and repositioning them so they’ll become more like collection points. And then,
most importantly, we need to improve our service levels and provide a great, great proposition with the benefits of our purchasing power and range. We’ve got excellent brands, which fit all price points, and with John’s help, we can get back to having a sales team and drivers that our customer know well and can rely on. It’s not that difficult. It’s not rocket science. But it is a big change for Headlam. We’ve had some positive and encouraging feedback from retailers. They now want to see action.’ Visit: www.headlam.com
STEPHEN BIRD ON EXECUTIVE CHANGES: ‘The business has been losing money for some time. The board have been monitoring where we are, very carefully, and the executive team were, obviously doing their best. The success of the strategy was somewhat dependent on the market recovery: Headlam only started to make money if the market recovered. We were concerned, we'd been concerned for some time. In the spring and early summer we started to see that recovery. Unfortunately, the market became more challenging over the summer, and we decided to take action. ‘The change in strategy’s been very well received [by shareholders]. And obviously, one of the questions is: “Why didn’t you do this quicker?” We should have, we should have probably taken these challenges quicker, but we didn't, and we are where we are. But the reaction from our customers and shareholders has been very positive.’

Tama is available in two sizes (40cm diameter and 45cm height, and 70cm diameter and 32cm height) and Pottery, Lemon Grass and Truffle shades. The eclectic Seeds collection of tables and benches references gardening, and is essential in its forms yet elegant in its details, with materials like terracotta and natural teak coming together. Cristina Celestino’s design uses variegated terracotta to emphasise the inspiration of plant life. This material, with its distinctive marbled surface, blends different clays to highlight the authentic nature of the collection. The Seeds elements have a metal structure, available in camouflage green with bronze feet, camouflage grey with russet scarabea feet, and limestone white with
grey gold feet. The tables reinterpret the traditional aesthetics of nursery tables with a contemporary twist, and are available in square (83cm x 83cm) and rectangular (83cm x 167cm), both 75cm high with surfaces in terracotta, in natural teak slats or in laminam calce terracotta. The benches are available in 30cm and 40cm heights with surfaces made from the same materials as the tables, with the addition of metal, and can be completed with soft cushions in ice or darma sage green coloured fabric. The collection’s dynamic character is emphasised by its variety of possible configurations as well as by the functional flexibility of the seats: the benches can be coffee tables and the coffee tables supporting surfaces inviting nature, as elegant display stands for flowers and plants. With Lodge, Ethimo and Christophe Pillet have created a range that reflects the appeal of unspoilt nature, where the warm hues of the earth meet the elegance of refined contemporary
design to create places of peace and contemplation that give a sense of being at one with the surrounding landscape. Lodge consists of a sofa, including modular versions, an armchair, a daybed, a pouf, and a coffee table with a top in marble, lava stone or aluminium with a matte finish. The suspended structure in tubular aluminium with a bright polished finish holds generous cushions in colours inspired by the vibrant hues of the savannah. The generous proportions and depth of the seats welcome the body in a soft embrace, while the choice of fabrics is inspired by the robustness of heavy canvas enhanced by double denimstyle stitching. Lodge comes in four colours: kaki, paprika, sesamo and caramel, and has been designed to be admired from any angle: the back of the different solutions features a pattern of ‘strips’ in aluminium that support the cushions, lending lightness and visual harmony whatever its chosen position. Eterio, the lightness that embraces
Alis, the playful micro-landscape
The Eterio chair, by Sancho Martín Merino, evokes the formal purity and continuous line of Classic Modernism. Its tubular and curved structure, which supports the upholstered seat, subtly recalls the Bauhaus line and the design of Marcel Breuer (such as the Wassily chair), where the material – in this case, the structure that embraces softness – becomes the defining skeleton of the piece. Eterio translates that geometric discipline into an organic and contemporary sensibility.
Caitlin Kao’s Alis bench is part of the tradition of biomorphic design and free forms. Its rounded contours and large upholstered ‘tube break with angular rigidity, evoking the playful and sculptural aesthetic popularised in the 1960s and 1970s by designers such as Eero Aarnio, or the interior design trend that sought the total integration of soft elements. Alis is a piece that invites movement.

Puff Coral, the tactile narrative
Noodle, the irreverent gesture
Enrique Soriano Muñoz’s Puff Coral is a tribute to materials and contemporary craftsmanship. The use of the oversized knot and the strong texture immediately evoke the most recognised collections of Patricia Urquiola, such as Mangas, where the braid and textile cease to be a covering, and become the loadbearing, expressive structure of the piece. It is the fusion between large-scale textile art and functionality.
Blanca Santacruz Oehling’s Noodle is an explosion of Postmodernism and Pop Art. The segmented, tubular, exaggerated and primary colour forms refer to the radical and ironic design of the 1970s in Italy, such as the Studio Alchimia collective or Gaetano Pesce’s work, which use playful, even kitsch forms to challenge the established. The Noodle is a cheerful transgression, a piece with a conceptual and very powerful wink.

White rugs reveal themselves as discreet protagonists Luminous and timeless, white is not only the most versatile hue par excellence, but also a choice that enhances natural light, making spaces appear wider and cleaner. Depending on its nuances, white transforms the perception of interiors. Its neutral essence highlights furniture, accessories and architectural elements, perfectly complementing minimal, Japandi or Scandinavian styles, while adapting naturally to a wide variety of contexts. In the world of rugs, white becomes a canvas where tactile textures create three-dimensional, soft and dynamic surfaces. Through plays of depth and contrast, the white rug reveals itself as a discreet protagonist of interiors, capable of blending aesthetic harmony with tactile comfort. It also screams luxury: you don’t need to take special care of it just because it’s white as you’ll simply replace it with a click of your fingers if anything dare stain or mark it. Carpet Edition’s Pure and Pure Light rugs come in three shades of white: Avorio (Ivory), Ghiaccio (Ice) and Latte (Milk). The polyester designs have

Hand-knotting creates a soft, refined texture while the monochrome choice allows Stilo to blend effortlessly into any interior while maintaining its distinctive presence. The rugs are hand-knotted and carded and can be made in two quality levels: Platinum 120, with 180,000 knots per sqm and Gold 100, with 152,000 knots per sqm, and they combine Himalayan wool, pure silk and vegetable colours. The surrounding fringing has been hand cut, bluntly clipped to different lengths to soften the rug’s silhouette. Made from 100% New Zealand wool, Oceanic Reef has a natural, understated elegance. This unwavering commitment has been recognised by Interiors Monthly readers, with Julian Bowen named Best Furniture Wholesaler for the 14th consecutive year, alongside Best Customer Service for the 11th year running. These accolades reflect not only operational excellence but also the strength of the long-term partnerships the business has built across the industry. “To receive this recognition from Interiors Monthly year after year is incredibly meaningful to us. Winning Best Furniture Wholesaler for the 14th consecutive year, alongside Best Customer Service for the 11th, is not something we take lightly. These

awards are a direct reflection of the dedication, professionalism and pride shown by our teams across every area of the business, from customer service and quality control to warehousing and logistics. They also speak to the strength of the relationships we have built with our retail partners over many years. We are extremely grateful for their continued trust and support, and these awards motivate us to keep raising standards and investing in the future,’ says Stefan Warhaftig, Julian Bowen ceo. Equally vital is a product portfolio that continues to adapt to changing market needs. Recent launches such as the Bolivia dining collection and the Windsor bedroom range highlight a balance of current styling and commercial sensibilities. ‘Looking ahead, we will continue with our aggressive approach to product development, underlining a proactive approach to trend-led design informed by deep wholesale insight and consumer awareness. At the heart of the business is a dedicated team whose collective expertise supports every aspect of our operation. Each department plays a vital role in delivering the consistency retailers
depend on. This joined-up approach continues to reinforce our reputation as a dependable and responsive supplier. ‘Sustainability also remains firmly on the agenda. Ongoing initiatives have already seen significant reductions in plastic usage, alongside the removal of polystyrene from key product ranges. We are continuing to invest in more environmentally responsible packaging and refining internal processes to minimise our overall footprint, ensuring growth is aligned with long-term responsibility. ‘In an industry shaped by evolving consumer expectations and increasingly complex supply chains, we have strengthened our operational foundations. Improvements to stock availability, logistics and delivery capabilities have created a more agile business model, offering retailers faster turnaround times and greater reliability.’ As the market continues to change, Julian Bowen’s focus is clear: to remain a trusted, long-term partner to retailers. ‘By combining service-led values, forward-thinking design and robust operations, Julian Bowen continues to define what it means to be a modern furniture wholesaler,’ says Warhaftig. With you
A wide range of support is available, with more to come this year
The NBF continues to deliver support, leadership and industry collaboration for retailers and manufacturers The National Bed Federation continues to deliver impactful support, leadership and industry collaboration, reinforcing its role as the leading and most influential voice for the UK and Irish bed sector, despite ongoing challenges in the industry. The cost-of-living crisis has led to a surge in unknown bed and mattress brands targeting consumers, which is likely to continue in 2026. These could be imported mattresses that are fallout from the US tariffs placed on Chinese products and may not meet UK safety standards, or perhaps more worryingly, from much closer to home. NBF consumer research in 2025 found that purchasing beds from the back of a van had declined; however, unscrupulous traders are now luring in consumers using flashy social media ads and online marketplaces to attract unsuspecting buyers. These activities damage the reputation of reputable
bed retailers and manufacturers by creating the false impression that high-specification products can be bought at much lower prices.
This is why the message of buying from a reputable bed retailer that stocks NBF-approved member brands is more important than ever. At the core
www.interiorsmonthly.co.uk
57
BEDS AND BEDROOM
of NBF membership is adherence to its Code of Practice, with the sixth edition being published this month. The CoP requires manufacturer members to pass an audit with strict requirements, and sets out criteria to ensure processes and procedures are in place for supply-chain scrutiny and regulatory compliance. As part of the CoP, the NBF has a due diligence random testing programme, which ensures it checks NBF members for ongoing compliance and not just at the time of the audit. It also purchases non-member products as part of the programme and shares the results with its primary authority partner, West Yorkshire Trading Standards. WYTS conducts its own investigations, often visiting manufacturing sites to provide expert advice, or if necessary,

initiate legal proceedings against the business. If the company in question is outside West Yorkshire, it contacts the relevant trading standards authority to follow up. Consumer education remains a priority to help tackle ruthless traders from the other side of the coin. The association has significantly increased its consumer scams awareness education, highlighting the benefits of buying NBF-approved brands from reputable retailers and the dangers of not doing so. To solidify its commitment to this, the NBF will have a new dedicated consumer campaign later this year. To further support retailers, it introduced a new level of benefits to the Retail Champions Scheme last summer. In addition to the free package, which includes a listing on the NBF’s
consumer website bedadvice.co.uk and a POS pack, the enhanced package takes business support to the next level, starting from £250 a year for small retailers. ‘The education being provided here is incredibly valuable: not just for compliance, but for building genuine, responsible businesses,’ says Matthew Randle, Dreamland Bedding Centre general manager. Those who have signed up have benefitted from in-depth information on the latest product legislation, expert support and advice on HR, health and safety, legal, and tax and VAT issues, annual NBF consumer bed-buying research, discounted City & Guilds training, sustainability insights, and the Bed Show’s first VIP lounge. Sustainability continues to remain a focus during 2026, with work required on digital product passports to support the ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation). To further assist NBF members on their sustainability journeys, a comprehensive NBF Sustainability Guide will strengthen existing guidance, such as the freely available Ecodesign Principles and NBF Chemical Claims Guide. The NBF Pledge for Our Planet will also be refreshed to keep members on track. The NBF has been researching how the industry can measure the cleanliness of reused and recycled materials from beds and mattresses, through its Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University. Circularity is critical to the future of the bed industry and the planet, and the test will be launched with NBF members later this year. Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk

Breasley is welcoming 2026 with a robust pipeline of initiatives 2025 was a highly proactive and strategically important year for Breasley. Product innovation remained central to its growth, highlighted by the development and launch of three models within the UNO Natural range, designed to reinforce the brand’s credentials in natural and performance-led sleep solutions. The Salus range also continued its growth as popularity for the threemattress luxury range continued. The year also saw the official launch of Breasley’s OEM and ODM own-label programmes, offering retail partners flexible opportunities to grow their businesses through bespoke and own-branded product development. Another significant milestone was becoming the official mattress and pillow supplier to Wrexham AFC, with the partnership representing a major step forward in brand visibility and longterm growth. This coincided with the appointment of Dr Robin Thorpe as Breasley’s sleep scientist, operating in an advisory capacity. ‘2025 was a year when we really ramped up the pace, finalising some strong projects. Some results are already visible; others are progressing and will come to fruition throughout 2026,’ says Matthew Williamson, Breasley group coo. ‘We enter the year with a robust pipeline of initiatives. Development of new 2026 product ranges is well underway, with final launches planned ahead of September’s Bed Show.’ ‘The Bed Show is always a highlight for us. It provides the ideal platform to showcase our ranges, strengthen existing

partnerships and develop new retail relationships,’ says Paul Duffy, Breasley head of marketing. Breasley will continue to grow its Platinum OEM and Gold ODM programmes. ‘With deep expertise in research, development and UK manufacturing, we are well positioned to support partners in bringing differentiated, own-label products to market. Long-standing customer relationships remain a core strength, underpinned by a collaborative, project-led approach,’ says Williamson. Sustainability continues to sit at the forefront of decision-making at the company. As a National Bed Federation member, Breasley is committed to meeting and exceeding the standards set out in the NBF Sustainability Policy. ‘We will always face market and environmental challenges. Working
closely with the NBF helps us prioritise our actions, and we remain focused on achieving our sustainability commitments as we move through 2026,’ says Sarah Khan, Breasley head of sustainability and supply chain. ‘With several high-impact projects due to launch, confidence across the business remains strong. Continued investment in people, technology and machinery will further expand our production capabilities and support future innovation. Increasing our production capacity is a key part of our growth strategy. By investing in capability and innovation, we can bring the right products to market at the right prices. 2026 will be another important step forward as we continue our drive to be recognised as the UK’s most innovative sleep brand,’ says Williamson. Rethink
Reborn’s non-woven wadding is manufactured from post-consumer mattress textiles and recovered fibre waste
There are alternative materials to virgin polyester for upholstery and interiors As material costs fluctuate and environmental scrutiny increases, furniture manufacturers are under pressure to rethink the materials they rely on, particularly padding and comfort layers. Non-woven wadding is used extensively across upholstery and interiors, yet much of the market remains dependent on virgin polyester, overseas supply chains and oil-linked pricing. Reborn – The Sustainable Manufacturer says its non-woven wadding is a commercially viable alternative, manufactured from postconsumer mattress textiles and recovered fibre waste. ‘Companies don’t want compromise. They want a pad that runs consistently, prices predictably and
Reborn can guarantees traceable feedstock at scale
66
Interiors Monthly January 2026
performs exactly as expected. Circularity only works if the material works. Reborn has been engineered to meet production expectations first, with sustainability built in: not the other way around,’ says Paul Beckett, Reborn – The Sustainable Manufacturer director. ‘Reborn non-woven wadding is designed as a direct replacement for conventional non-woven pads in many furniture applications. It delivers stable structure, controlled loft and resilience, with consistent roll quality and hygiene control. Manufactured using a low-energy dry-laid process with thermal bonding and contamination management, the product is already in live supply. It is not a pilot or development material. Key benefits for buyers include reliable
UK supply; shorter lead times; technical support at source; reduced exposure to imported raw materials, and measurable carbon and landfill savings.’ The company says that independent analysis indicates a carbon impact up to 63% lower compared to virgin polyester wadding, with additional benefits around Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) readiness and end-of-life recoverability. ‘Our access to post-consumer mattress textiles through our linked recycling operations gives the business something many circular suppliers lack: secure, traceable feedstock at scale. Manufacturers increasingly ask two questions: can you supply consistently and can you prove where the material comes from? We can answer yes to both.’ Interest in Reborn non-woven wadding is being driven by three commercial realities: rising costs and volatility in virgin fibres; increased customer and retailer scrutiny, and incoming EPR requirements, says Beckett. ‘This isn’t about future legislation. It’s about buying a better pad now.’ Visit: www.reborn-products.com
A Better Pad – Built from Waste Furniture-grade nonwoven padding made entirely from recovered mattress and textile fibres. Reborn™ Nonwoven Wadding is a ready-to-run circular padding solution for furniture and upholstery manufacturers. Manufactured in the UK from post-consumer mattress textiles, Reborn delivers the look, feel and consistency of conventional padding – while cutting landfill, carbon and exposure to volatile virgin fibre markets. This is not a trial material or a future concept. It is in production now. It performs. It scales. Reborn is suitable for: • Upholstery and furniture padding • Comfort and support layers • Quilting and overlay applications • Acoustic and insulation uses
Why manufacturers are switching to Reborn:
Consistent density, thickness and resilience • Predictable pricing, independent of oil markets • Up to 63% lower carbon footprint vs virgin polyester • UK manufacture with secure, short lead times • Traceable feedstock and EPR-ready design • Drop-in compatibility with existing processes If you are currently buying virgin polyester pads, foam alternatives or imported wadding, Reborn is the circular replacement that works on your line. Request samples. Discuss pricing. Secure supply.

FN Neuhofer has invested in the future, new technologies, product and new business areas Skirting board specialist FN Neuhofer is passionately investing in the future, product development, new technologies and new business areas. Extruded core skirting boards has been on the company’s wish list for a long time and now it has become a reality, with the first FN XTRU-pro skirting board rolling off the production line at its new plant in Pöndorf, Austria. The hall construction is complete, the completely new technical infrastructure is in place and everything is running like clockwork as Neuhofer heralds the era of extruded core skirting board in-house production. The special feature of this skirting is that it can be punched, which saves a lot of time during processing and at the same time ensures precise processing
quality. Inside is a stable MDF core, fully coated with polypropylene. During punching, the extruded film remains completely intact. The result is clean, closed corners for optimum protection. The soft sealing lips ensure a perfect connection to the wall and floor and guarantee reliable protection against moisture and dust. ‘This makes our core skirting board suitable for use in bathrooms and kitchens. The waterproof version is the safe choice, as its sealed cut edges make it the best solution for damp rooms,’ says Mihaly Bakti, Neuhofer application engineer. ‘The fireproof version with a fireretardan surface is unique on the market, offering safety, stability and style.’ Neuhofer has a wide range of solid colours in stock for the cubic (FN TURN-X),

As well, it has a colour matching offer thanks to its state-ofthe-art in-house digital printing technology, so every surface is individually manufactured. ‘The result is a brilliant appearance and unique feel. Decors with a real wood character, for example, feel truly authentic,’ says Bakti. Also new on the market is the twoin-one application: Neuhofer’s core skirting board can be turned and used either cubically or chamfered. ‘To ensure first-class quality, we recommend installation with our perfectly coordinated Neuhofer tool system, consisting of a punch and hot glue gun.’ Visit: www.fnprofile.com

Four days of design innovation, commercial insight and retail inspiration INDX Furniture returns to Cranmore Park from 17-20 January, for four days dedicated to design innovation, commercial insight and retail inspiration. Known for its unique approach to curation, INDX Furniture remains a trend-responsive trade show shaped directly by the AIS buying team. With the Saturday exclusively for AIS members, the show will open its doors to members and non-members for the remaining three days, offering buyers a dynamic, edited opportunity to discover the latest must-have designs across upholstery, living and dining, home accessories, garden and outdoor. The 2026 show will shine a spotlight on newness and innovation, gathering a powerful line-up of market-leading brands, fresh launches and industry intel under one roof. ‘We are trading within a very uncertain retail landscape, against a backdrop of rising costs, inflation, supply chain

headwinds and weak consumer confidence. While this is a formidable list of challenges, it throws up a wealth of opportunities for retailers, and our role is to help them identify and maximise these as AIS continues to reinforce its role as a trusted commercial partner for independent retailers,’ says Emma Rackley, AIS director of furniture and home. ‘One key opportunity is to respond to the general consumer trend for valuing local businesses over multiples. Our retailers know their customers very well: they are often the beating heart of their hometowns and are best placed to provide the personalised approach and service that harnesses community engagement. ‘This must be supported by maximising digital presence: utilising local SEO, targeted mobile shopping, and social media platforms for storytelling that creates an emotion-generated
relationship between customer and retailer. Retailers need to be bold enough to embrace and display products that adapt to multi-generational living and multi-use spaces. The reality is that larger multiples cannot easily create an emotional connection, but our independent retailers can and must.’ ‘Our role is simple: to provide the most efficient and effective meeting point for innovation and commercial business. We’ve got a very special edition of the show lined up, featuring plenty of product launches, debuts and exclusives,’ says Rachel Cooper, AIS upholstery selector. ‘The macro trend we’ll be focusing on will spotlight The Knowmads: a celebration of grand modernism with a bold, robust and daring approach to design. With more than 500 UK and international brands confirmed, over 50,000 products on display and 20,000 visitors, JFS 2026 reflects the scale and complexity of today’s furniture landscape. While firmly business-focused, the show continues to evolve in response to design-led thinking, sustainability priorities and changing consumer expectations. Now in its 36th edition, relationships are renewed and commercial decisions begin to take shape as the event offers a concentrated opportunity to assess quality, materials and innovation across a broad spectrum of sectors and price points. The market enters 2026 against a backdrop of shifting consumer behaviour, heightened sustainability demands and ongoing supply-chain pressures. In this environment, clarity and trusted partnerships are increasingly valuable. JFS functions as a market barometer, offering a focused view of where retail, design and manufacture are heading, and providing the scale required to plan with confidence. More than a third of exhibitors will be making their JFS debut, including Cardoso Leal, Davis Fabrics, Fabryka Mebli Tom-Pol, Meta Sofa, Nest Space, PURE Designs and Richmond Interiors, adding fresh perspectives across upholstery, cabinetry and lifestyle categories. Pillar
OmniGuard Advance
Research is guiding Purecare’s consumer communication Sleep has become one of the most important pillars of modern wellbeing. As consumers place greater value on how they feel both mentally and physically, the role of sleep products has evolved from basic comfort to meaningful wellness support. At the heart of this shift is research, innovation and trust. Over the past year, Purecare has conducted an in-depth UK sleep study of more than 1,000 people to better understand how they sleep, what disrupts their rest and where opportunities exist to improve overall wellbeing. The findings reinforce just how central sleep has become to everyday health, with almost all respondents stating that sleep is vital to their quality of life. One of the clearest insights gained from the research was that while people understand the importance of sleep, many struggle to achieve it consistently. Stress, anxiety and temperature were among the most common disruptors, highlighting that sleep challenges are
rarely caused by one factor alone. This insight has helped shape how Purecare communicates with customers, shifting the conversation away from individual products and towards creating a complete sleep environment that supports both body and mind. Purecare’s product development reflects this holistic approach. Its range, including the OmniGuard Advance 5-Sided Mattress Protector, is designed not only to protect against spills and allergens but also to promote a cleaner, calmer sleep space. The protector’s performance and quality were highlighted in 2025 with Good Housekeeping Institute Approved recognition. Pillows also play a crucial role in this ecosystem. Purecare’s Wave and Nano pillows are engineered to support spinal alignment for side sleepers, the most common sleeping position identified in the study. Combined with cooling fabrics and pressure-relieving design, these products address both physical comfort

104

and the mental reassurance that comes from sleeping well supported. Temperature regulation also emerged as a priority for consumers. Building awareness Wellbeing is at the core of PureLay’s approach ‘Better sleep leads to better wellbeing’ is at the core of PureLay’s approach to mattress design. Built around the natural performance of latex, the brand offers a wellness-led alternative for consumers seeking solutions to two of the most persistent sleep challenges: overheating and inadequate back support. PureLay has continued to build awareness within the UK bed sector as interest grows in mattresses that do more than simply provide comfort. Today’s consumers are increasingly informed about the impact of sleep quality on long-term health, energy levels and posture, and PureLay has positioned itself within this shift towards considered sleep solutions. At the heart of the brand is the PureLay Ultimate Back-Care Collection, a three-model hybrid mattress range designed for those who prefer a firmer sleep surface. Each mattress combines the cooling and breathable properties of PureLay Latex with natural fillings including wool, cotton, cashmere and

silk. These materials work together to create a refined, temperature-regulating sleep environment while maintaining a premium look and feel. The hybrid construction pairs latex with a firm ortho-zoned pocket spring system, designed to support correct spinal alignment, provide targeted pressure relief, and encourage airflow throughout the mattress. Zoned support means that key areas such as the lumbar region receive additional stability, making the range particularly appealing to customers prioritising back care, without compromising comfort. ‘Customers are actively looking for mattresses that address overheating and poor support. PureLay is designed to feel supportive yet comfortable, look premium on the shop floor, and deliver a clear wellness message. By blending breathable materials with firm, orthopaedic support, the range answers a genuine consumer need,’ says Paul Lake Purecare & PureLay UK and Europe head.
PureLay also offers a range of natural latex toppers. Designed to add an extra layer of breathability and targeted comfort, they help relieve pressure points and improve spinal alignment, allowing sleepers to tailor their sleep surface more precisely. For retailers, they provide an introduction to the PureLay brand. ‘As demand continues to rise for natural, supportive and breathable sleep solutions, PureLay presents a compelling proposition. By combining thoughtful materials with functional design, we are reinforcing the idea that better sleep is fundamental to wellbeing,’ says Lake. PureLay will be exhibiting at Hall 5 Stand A51, offering the opportunity to experience Purelay Latex first hand. Email: sales@purelay.co.uk

Power partnership Buoyant is set to reveal its largest JFS showcase With 13 new models and a new collaboration, Buoyant’s partnership with Premier will take centre stage for the upholstery manufacturer at January Furniture Show, with its largest showcase. The 13 are a combination of five of Buoyant’s bestselling designs now in leather and eight new recliners co-developed with Premier exclusively for the UK market. Buoyant promises a stand (Hall 5 Stand F30/G30) that captures the momentum of this new product development. ‘The initial reaction from retailers and agents has been fantastic as we streamline the leather supply chain and strengthen our offering in motion upholstery. We’ve proven that by combining Buoyant’s design and market knowledge with Premier’s expertise in leather and recliner manufacturing, we can bring something genuinely new and exciting to the market. January Furniture Show 2026 will be our biggest statement,’ says Mike Aramayo, Buoyant md. Each design showcases a blend of British design sensibility, international craftsmanship and an unwavering commitment to comfort and value. Retailers can expect a depth of choice that reflects Buoyant’s growing ambition in the leather and motion category. Stock will continue to be held in the UK, ensuring the fast lead times and smooth service that have always been Buoyant hallmarks. The partnership with Premier has allowed Buoyant to broaden its offer without compromising on its core strengths in British-made upholstery. ‘It’s a move that positions us perfectly to meet the evolving needs of the modern furniture retail market – one where speed, flexibility and variety are increasingly essential. This isn’t just about new models. It’s about offering retailers more choice, more value and more reasons to work with Buoyant,’ says Aramayo. In addition to the new collections, Buoyant will show proven winners and some of its new fabric models for 2026, underlining its confidence, creativity and continued growth. Shire Beds will look to build on the success of its Sienna, Solitude and Verona mattresses
Shire Beds’ introductions are based on retailer insight Shire Beds is preparing for a major showcase at JFS, with new ranges based on its experience as a private-label manufacturer and shaped by retailer insight and consumer expectation. ‘For nearly 30 years, Shire Beds has quietly powered the success of retailers large and small, manufacturing mattresses that underpin retailers’ reputations and drive repeat business. While consumer-facing brands evolve and retail landscapes shift, Shire Beds has remained the dependable engine behind many of the UK’s leading instore sleep offerings. The ability to collaborate closely with retailers – designing products tailored to their market positioning, price strategies and customer demographics – has set us apart in an increasingly competitive sector,’ says Fara Butt, Shire Beds director. ‘January Furniture Show is the ideal stage to demonstrate this partnershipfirst approach. This year’s new ranges, kept tightly under wraps until launch, have been developed not just to impress consumers, but to help retailers strengthen their own brand identity. From refreshed comfort technologies and natural material options to enhanced durability and improved manufacturing efficiencies, each new product is built with the retailer’s name, success and long-term strategy in mind.’ Central to Shire Beds’ offering is its sales team, who understand the nuances of private-label development, regional

retail challenges and the commercial realities of modern mattress retailing. This insight forms a crucial bridge between the retailer and the factory, ensuring ranges are desirable to customers and profitable and scalable for the retailer, with the collaborative process refined over many years. Mattresses created under a retailer’s name are made by Shire Beds’ skilled West Yorkshire manufacturing workforce, who take pride in their deep technical knowledge and craft. From hand-tufting to precision stitching, the team ensures that every private-label product meets the high standards associated with Shire Beds: allowing retailers to build a brand
on quality they can trust. ‘This year’s launches represent our continued commitment to innovation, responsible manufacturing and helping retailers grow with confidence,’ says Butt. Visitors to the stand on Hall 5 G20 will also be able to explore expanded customisation options, flexible delivery programmes and enhanced support services designed specifically for retailerowned collections. ‘In a market where British-made products, reliable supply chains and strong manufacturing partners are more important than ever, Shire Beds is positioned as an invaluable ally.’ Visit: www.shirebeds.co.uk

New era Sofa Connection will ‘truly showcase’ what it can do ‘This is the year we truly showcase what we’re capable of. It’s set to be a fantastic show,’ says Sarah Oakley, who leads Sofa Connections with her husband Matt. The company is entering January Furniture Show with a renewed sense of confidence and momentum. In recent years, Sofa Connections has evolved: a strategic rebrand, relocation to new premises, and a refreshed approach to

product development, strengthening its reputation as a trusted creator of handcrafted, made-to-order furniture. These changes have paved the way for a new era. ‘This year’s showcase promises to be our most dynamic, with three models set to make their official debut. Taking pride of place in Hall 1 Stand F10 will be Highgate, Ilkley and Gaudet: three
distinctive ranges that demonstrate Sofa Connection’s ability to blend contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship,’ says Sarah. ‘Each of the new models brings its own personality and aesthetic. All three are show-stoppers. We’re incredibly excited to present them. Highgate is a modern silhouette defined by its square arm and stylish piped detailing and positioned low for a grounded, elegant feel. Ilkley, by contrast, embraces a classic character with subtle modern influences. Its bandage arm has been carefully shaped to offer both visual appeal and exceptional comfort, making it a versatile choice for a wide variety of interiors.’ ‘Gaudet marries timeless design with contemporary refinement. Featuring a set-back arm, traditional castors and newly developed feather seat and back cushions, it offers a luxurious yet familiar experience,’ says Matt. ‘Craftsmanship is central to Sofa Connections’ identity. The new collection represents an important step forward. We’re proud to produce our furniture here in the UK. Supporting local talent allows us to maintain the highest standards while offering customers furniture that’s genuinely built to last.’ The show will also see an expanded selection of fabrics and finishes. From rich textures to contemporary colour stories, the range has been created to reflect shifting trends in modern interiors while staying true to the company’s longstanding focus on comfort and durability. OMNIS Retail is designed to power the whole retail operation ‘Iconography is home for furniture retailers. With more than 10 years of innovation, development and collaboration within the industry, the platform is now well established amongst successful independents. In recent years, we’ve been supporting businesses both online and in store with OMNIS Retail,’ says Wayne Robbins, Iconography director. ‘This past year it has become even clearer to me that furniture retailers are asking more of their providers when it comes to their digital operation. There is a real frustration with slow development amongst legacy software
providers. When new challenges arise, they are finding that a solution is hard won and often a bit of a bodge or workaround. Combined with poor service and poor levels of support, it’s no surprise that furniture retailers are looking for a robust alternative.’ OMNIS Retail is an omnichannel retail platform developed with furniture in mind. ‘We are cutting out disjointed integrations between online, in-store and back-office functions that so often lead to operational inefficiencies like duplicate data entry and inaccurate reporting. Our team are all based locally to our Somerset office and are on hand

to guide and support our clients on the phone, via email or through our dedicated support portal. We take note of emerging pain points for retailers and work together to regularly build new features into the platform.’ Robbins says a key development for Iconography in 2025 was its partnership with Staingard to build a module that supports the new banded policies. ‘We recognised the importance of being able to increase average order values with an easy upselling solution for furniture care. Rather than fudge an existing function to achieve this, we worked closely with Staingard and our furniture clients to create something fit for purpose,’ he says. ‘We’re really proud to have OMNIS Retail rolled out to 10 retailers across the UK and Ireland. It’s especially encouraging to see businesses like Haskins fully embrace the platform and streamline its ecommerce operation and bricks-andmortar processes. Jade Farthing, Haskins md, has told us how they find the ease of back-to-back ordering, goods in, labelling inventory and stock allocation, all in one unified system. ‘We are back at January Furniture Show again this year – you can find Mike Whitman, head of product and Chris Bland, software specialist and I in Hall 1 Stand G25. We are looking forward to meeting furniture retailers looking to improve their online, in-store and back-office retail operations.’ Visit: www.iconography.co.uk

Clear direction
Guardsman has a clear roadmap that puts retail partners first ‘2025 was a year of momentum and meaningful progress for Guardsman. With major plans coming to fruition, new initiatives taking shape, and a renewed focus on strengthening our service, we move into 2026 energised and fully aligned behind a clear direction. It’s been an exciting period of evolution: one that places our retail partners firmly at the centre of everything we do,’ says Ryan White, Guardsman head of sales for the UK and RoI. ‘A significant part of our success has come from sharpening and improving the way we deliver service. We’ve invested time and expertise into refining processes, enhancing customer touchpoints and strengthening the support our retail partners rely on. These improvements have already had a noticeable impact, and they form the foundation of an even more efficient, customer-focused service experience in the year ahead. ‘Our sales team brings fresh energy, renewed confidence, and a strong future vision. Having John Conroy and Lawrence Argent as business development managers for the north and south respectively has made the team stronger, and with renewed focus and new initiatives to present to our retailers we are really pleased to end the year in such a great position. It’s this sense of purpose and ownership that
126

will continue driving our partnership approach throughout 2026. ‘We’re also excited about the ongoing developments in our cover enhancements, pricing models, commercial arrangements and wider innovations. Each area is designed with one clear goal: to create more value, more simplicity and more confidence for retailers and their customers. These initiatives represent the next step in ensuring Guardsman remains the most dependable and forward-thinking protection provider in the industry.’ Across the business, Guardsman’s teams remain one of its greatest strengths. With decades of combined
expertise across operations, marketing, network services and continuous improvement, its senior leadership team has played a crucial role in ensuring stability while laying the groundwork for what comes next, says White. ‘Their close involvement with retailer relationships ensures that the decisions we make and the improvements we invest in always come back to supporting partners in the real world – where it matters most. ‘Of course, the backbone of our business continues to shine: our Repair Network and Safeclean technicians. Their professionalism, reliability and enviable first-visit fix rate remain key reasons retailers trust Guardsman. Their commitment to delivering the level of service customers expect is something we’re extremely proud of. ‘We arrive into 2026 with confidence, a stronger Guardsman, supported by new systems, improved processes, a revitalised team and a clear roadmap that puts our retail partners first. Their customers deserve a protection provider that blends innovation with reliability. A partner who continuously improves, adapts, listens and invests, so they can offer cover with complete confidence. A team who understands their challenges and supports their goals, every step of the way.’ Email: ryan.white@guardsman.co.uk

Connected
Every part of a retail business needs connections ‘Among everything shaping tomorrow’s retail landscape, one thing is clear: the future is connected. In the world of furniture retail, the role of technology has moved far beyond the service desk. A simple till system may once have sufficed, but today’s retail environment demands more – more insight, more efficiency and more flexibility. As expectations grow and operations expand, furniture and bed retailers need an end-to-end solution that connects every part of their business. That’s where Ordorite comes in,’ says Stephen Connolly, Ordorite ceo. ‘Ordorite is not just another point-ofsale system. It’s an award-winning, fully integrated retail management platform built specifically for the furniture and bed industry. From showroom to warehouse, it provides the digital infrastructure to manage operations seamlessly, bringing together sales, inventory, delivery logistics, customer service, marketing and reporting into one intelligent system.’ Where generic systems often fall short
128
Interiors Monthly January 2026
is in the inability to handle the sector’s unique complexity. Furniture retailers deal with customisable products, madeto-order configurations, long delivery lead times and high-value stock: all of which demand precise coordination. Ordorite has been designed with these challenges in mind. Whether it’s generating a multi-option product using the tile builder, tracking sales commissions in real time or scheduling deliveries based on vehicle capacity and route efficiency, Ordorite can ensure every department works in sync. As a cloud-based platform, Ordorite enables real-time visibility across all locations, from shop floor to back office. Managers can track sales, monitor KPIs and make data-driven decisions instantly, while store teams benefit from intuitive interfaces that simplify processes and boost productivity. At its heart is Vision IQ, Ordorite’s reporting engine, which allows retailers to customise dashboards, automate reports and gain insights that drive business growth. Customer experience
also benefits from a connected system. With integrated CRM and Grow Hub marketing tools, retailers can segment customers based on past behaviour and re-engage them with personalised campaigns via text, email or newsletter. Customer service teams can track delivery feedback, handle aftercare and maintain high standards with full visibility of order histories and customer interactions. ‘In an industry where margins are tight and customer expectations are high, disconnected systems slow you down. The future of furniture retail lies in streamlined, scalable technology that supports growth without increasing complexity. For retailers ready to move beyond outdated POS systems, Ordorite offers the clarity, control and customisation needed to stay ahead,’ says Connolly. Ordorite is again exhibiting at JFS at Hall 3 Stand A5/A10, demonstrating how its technology can help retailers scale, automate and get connected to succeed. Visit: www.ordorite.com

LIGHTING The light will age and change over time
Form and function
Thaïs has a stone-washed finish
Marcello Ziliani turned to brass for Thaïs ‘It’s clear that designing objects that must deal with severe environmental conditions requires particular attention. When my team and I think of a lighting fixture intended for outdoor use, we think of it in that context from the very beginning, so that the formal and functional elements naturally emerge from the related constraints and specifications. For me, form and function are inseparable, even if not always distributed in equal measure: in Thaïs they are very well balanced,’ says Marcello Ziliani, on his light for Platek. Designing Thaïs was a technical challenge, given that its main functional characteristic is a lighting head containing all the necessary elements for its operation (LED cluster,

electronics, batteries, power and dimming control and USB charging port). This means it can be adjusted in height along the stem or mounted on the short rod accessory, allowing it to be used as a table lamp or as a downlight suspended from a cable. ‘When we started developing the first concepts, we jokingly imagined “a hole with light around it,’ says Ziliani. The ability to slide up and down and lock at the desired height is a technical aspect that is anything but simple, especially for an element that is quite heavy, being made from solid brass. ‘Platek’s product development department did a wonderful engineering job. We managed to keep the very slim
cross-section, which was the main formal objective, and to integrate everything inside this elegant disc while concealing all technical elements,’ he adds. ‘It’s a bit strange to talk about innovative solutions inspired by a material – brass – whose use dates back to the stone age and that is generally associated with a “classic” vocabulary. But this is precisely the magic of Thaïs, because this ancient material finds a new dimension in the stone-washed surface finish, unprecedented for this type of application, but also in the characteristic of being left unprotected, so that it can age and change over time, gradually acquiring the burnished patina that bears witness to its life.’ Visit: www.platek.eu
