Securing your child’s future is at the heart of what we do. For over 135 years, St John’s has prepared children for entry into leading senior schools, with the capacity to learn and thrive long into the future. Here are just some of the top schools our pupils have progressed to in the past five years.
We are proud to support our pupils to achieve prestigious scholarships, with over 25% consistently offered awards across Academics, Art, Drama, Music and Sport.

Headmaster’s Welcome
Welcome to St John’s Beaumont, a preparatory school for boys and girls aged 3–13. Founded in 1888, our vision is to nurture young men and women who serve others through the pursuit of academic excellence and the development of strong character.
Our two fundamental guiding principles are Magis: to strive always to be greater for others; and Cura Personalis: the whole hearted, individual pastoral care we give to each child to ensure that pupils grow to become articulate, courageous, self‑assured, compassionate and principled young people. Our dedicated teachers work in genuine partnership with parents, delivering a rigorous academic curriculum enriched by a vibrant co‑curriculum that inspires curiosity, resilience and joy.
We believe that every child can flourish when they are supported to develop the confidence to lead, the skills to learn deeply and the character to act with integrity. These are the foundations upon which their future lives, choices and successes are built. I warmly invite you to discover for yourself the nurturing, ambitious and values‑driven environment that makes St John’s Beaumont such a special place for every child.
Mr Philip Barr Headmaster

An immaculate school with a diverse intake, brilliant space and facilities and that doesn’t forget to balance fun with helping children achieve excellence in life and learning.
A St John’s Beaumont Education
From Nursery to Year 8, pupils are known as individuals. They are encouraged to ask questions, to think independently and to take intellectual risks. High expectations in everything they say and do sit alongside warmth and encouragement. In classrooms, on the sports field, in performances and in boarding houses, children learn that effort counts, that teamwork is valued, and that who they are matters just as much as what they achieve.
Throughout the school’s history, it has shaped and formed young people of curiosity, compassion and confidence; pupils who are as generous as they are grateful, as wise as they are learned.
We welcome families of all faiths and none into our school, which is a community that draws on and celebrates its Catholic traditions. We are united by a shared belief that great education has a spiritual element, that cherishes tradition and shows deep respect for others. Character is not an added extra here; it is woven into daily life.
Academic outcomes are strong, and our pupils progress to some of the country’s most respected senior schools. Yet what truly distinguishes a St John’s education is the confidence with which they step forward. They leave not only well prepared, but well grounded, well rounded and ready to thrive in an ever changing world.
We are proud to build strong partnerships with our community of parents, which is fundamental to success in these formative years. Clear communication, strong relationships and shared ambition ensure that each child’s transition through the Pre Prep years is of the highest standards.
“Knowing that my son is in your care fills me with a profound sense of relief and gratitude. Thank you for being so pivotal in my son’s educational journey.”
The Journey Nursery
A St John’s education begins with warmth, curiosity, structure and purposeful discovery. In our Nursery and Early Years, children – and young families – are nurtured and welcomed by Mrs Waters (Nursery Teacher) and Mrs Powell Harper (Reception Class Teacher & Head of Pre Prep). It is an environment where exploration is encouraged and confidence gently grows. Through carefully planned play, early literacy and numeracy development, and attentive pastoral care, pupils establish strong foundations for learning and character. Each child is valued as an individual. Crucially, each day is filled with joy and the whole experience creates a wonderful context for children to develop meaningful friendships with their peers.

Pre-Prep Reception to Year 2
Our early years children benefit greatly from specialist teaching in PE, Swimming, Music, Drama and our Forest School. The breadth and structure of our curriculum give students an excellent foundation that lays the groundwork for their journey ahead.
As pupils move into Years 1 & 2, that early curiosity becomes intellectual momentum while joy in their learning remains central. French is introduced in Year 1 and many of our pupils now study individual music lessons with our talented music teachers, many of whom are professional musicians. Pupils continue to develop confidence in their ability to articulate themselves and connect with an audience through our Public Speaking curriculum.
Children leave our Pre‑Prep fully prepared for Middle School, with well developed co curricular passions, strong friendships and a deep engagement and ambition with their learning.

Middle School Years 3-5 Upper School Years 6-8
In the Middle School, pupils take increasing ownership of their learning, through a balance of working closely with their class teacher in core subjects, alongside continued specialist teaching in the wider curriculum. They develop a unique rapport with a range of teachers, fostering an agile, open minded approach.
Children’s identity and self esteem grow through developing their strengths and engaging with new opportunities that challenge them. Spanish is introduced into the curriculum, outdoor learning is cherished in our weekly Forest School, and our Public Speaking curriculum progresses to give all children the challenge and opportunity of performing in front of their parents, an example of one of many powerful moments where each child’s growth is celebrated to further build their self‑esteem and inspire their future development.
“Thank you for your care and love for our children and as always, the support - they would not be where they are without the kindness, help and attention of all the teachers and staff.”
Year 6 pupils transition to specialist teachers in all subjects who help refine their skills for entrance exams, such as, the ISEB Common Pre Test. Following this, academic stretch intensifies as the Common Entrance 13+ syllabus begins. Leadership opportunities expand and scholarship pathways are carefully supported. Pupils leave us ready not simply for the next school, but for the responsibilities and opportunities that lie beyond it.
Throughout every stage, the journey is intentional and reflects key stages in children’s development from accuracy in fine motor skills, to capacity in working memory and the emergence of the pre frontal cortex that influences how children relate to peers and the world around them. Each year builds on the last through a spiral curriculum. Each pupil is known. Each child is encouraged to grow not only in skills and knowledge, but also in confidence and character.
St John’s provides an education that teaches cognitive skills, values, attitudes and attributes that are carefully guided and designed to secure success, to create life long memories and friendships and provide a grounding that opens up exciting futures for our talented pupils.
“Without your support and guidance throughout the process the scholarship award would not have been possible.”

Academic Excellence
High Performance is Possible for All
At St John’s Beaumont, education is founded on instilling a mindset that excellence is possible for all pupils. St John’s is accredited as a High Performance Learning (HPL) school, and is currently working towards attaining the prestigious HPL World Class School Award. Pupils of all ages are taught to develop the attributes of high performance. Embedded in every aspect of the curriculum are five cognitive skills (Analysing, Creating, Linking, Meta-Thinking and Realising) and three attitudes (Hardworking, Agile and Empathy).
Teachers bring these skills to life in the classroom, guiding pupils to recognise them in their own learning and to consciously select the most effective skill or attitude when faced with a challenge.
Languages play an important role in the curriculum, with French beginning in Year 1, Spanish in Year 3 and Latin in Year 6. The approach incorporates a World of Languages, Languages of the World (WoLLoW) approach where pupils are taught to make connections across language and culture. Public Speaking is taught from Years 1 to 5, providing pupils with rich opportunities to articulate their ideas, present to an audience and grow as confident, compelling communicators.
Rooted in traditional scholarship, St John’s Beaumont values the discipline and creativity fostered through reading, writing and artistic expression with pen and paper. Alongside this strong foundation, we ensure that pupils are equally at ease in a modern digital environment. IT lessons begin in Year 2, coding is introduced from Year 6 and, from Year 5, pupils use personal school laptops to support independent study and flipped learning tasks. Mastery of the Microsoft platform and a broad suite of digital tools equips them for the demands of senior school and beyond.
Whilst students graduate to such impressive destination schools, more importantly, they leave as independent learners, capable of managing their time, articulating their ideas clearly and approaching challenge with resilience.
Excellence at St John’s Beaumont is not measured solely by results, but by the habits of mind and strength of character that underpin them.
Life Beyond the Classroom
Talent Enrichment
The Enrichment Programme is designed to broaden horizons, nurture individual talents and encourage pupils to discover what truly inspires them.
The performing arts play a central role in school life. From Chapel Choir and Junior and Senior Orchestra, a number of our pupils achieve Grades 6 to 8 in their music examinations and take part in regular concerts for parents and the school community. Our Drama productions showcase musicals to Shakespeare; recent highlights include The Lion King, Aladdin, and an outdoor adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Pupils are encouraged to perform with confidence and creativity, and we are proud that 90% achieved Distinction in their recent LAMDA examinations.
Years 3 to 8 participate in the school wide Verse Speaking Competition, with winners bringing depth of understanding to Shakespearean sonnets and Victorian verse. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, children learn discipline, teamwork and the quiet courage that performance demands.
A wide range of Enrichment activities before school, at break time, lunch, and after school enable pupils to explore new interests and

“My son’s time at the school has been rich and well-rounded: academically challenging, while also allowing him to grow through sport and music.”
develop their passions. Debating, Chess, Reasoning, Art Scholarship, Yoga, Collaboration Club, Mindfulness, Crocheting, Green Power Racing, Dance, Fencing, Young Writers are just some of the options in addition to a range of sports. Quiz Club students recently reached the Finals in the National Mathematics Quiz Championship, taking them all the way to Oxford University for the finals.
Leadership and concern for society are nurtured through Pupil Voice Committees throughout the school, with every pupil having a role and a voice. Among at least 12 committees: Chaplaincy Committee arrange fundraising activities, SJB Re imagined have input into the exciting school site development plans, Food Committee survey peers about the breakfast, lunch and supper menus and Animal House Committee devise new inter‑Animal (inter‑House) competitions to promote teamwork and shared endeavour.
Older pupils are given meaningful responsibility, learning to lead by example and to support younger members of the school. You may see them reading with Year 3 in tutor time or the Captain of Music introducing the Pre Prep Concert and Captain of Swimming motivating the team at galas.
This breadth is not incidental. It is intentional. Exposure to diverse experiences builds adaptability and self‑assurance. It allows children to discover talents they may not yet know they possess.
At St John’s Beaumont, education is not confined to the timetable. It is a rich and varied experience that equips pupils with confidence, creativity and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

Sport & Outdoor Learning
Physical confidence and resilience are central to life at St John’s Beaumont.
Sport is both inclusive and ambitious. St John’s has a proud history of tenacity and teamwork, competing successfully in a broad range of fields at IAPS competitions, with recent highlights including: National IAPS Judo Champions, National 100m and 200m Champions, and regional swimming success with our reigning county champion.
Every pupil is encouraged to participate fully, to represent the school with pride and to understand the value of commitment to a team. Rugby, Netball, Football, Hockey, Tennis and Cricket operate as main sports each term, with a host of other sports such as Golf, Judo, Athletics, Badminton, Table Tennis, Basketball, Cross Country and Volleyball. Pupils swim at least once a week, with additional sessions run before and after school.

Expert coaching, excellent facilities and a competitive fixture list provide opportunities for those with particular talent, while a culture of encouragement ensures that every child experiences challenge and achievement.
Through sport, pupils learn far more than technique. They learn discipline, respect and how to respond constructively to both success and disappointment. These lessons endure long after the final whistle.
Outdoor learning forms a natural extension of this philosophy. Forest School and wider outdoor education programmes foster independence, problem solving and an appreciation of the natural world. Time spent outdoors strengthens collaboration and builds practical confidence.
At St John’s Beaumont, sport and outdoor learning are not peripheral activities. They are essential elements in shaping capable, grounded young people ready to meet challenge with confidence.
Boarding & Pastoral Care
A strong sense of belonging underpins life at St John’s Beaumont.

Every pupil belongs to an Animal House, one of: Tigers, Yaks or Emus. This fosters a strong sense of identity and friendly competition across the school community, pupils and staff alike. Everyone from Year 2‑8 collects house points (TYEs: Tigers, Yaks, Emus) and inter‑Animal events in music, sports, talent and more add bonus points to the scores before a termly and annual winner is announced. This tradition enables staff to praise pupils for exhibiting High Performance Learning skills and attitudes that are collated weekly in a colourful, personal TYE Card.
Class teachers and tutors are attentive to each child’s strengths, challenges and aspirations. Open communication with families is prioritised, and wellbeing is considered integral to success. Regular wellbeing surveys mean the pastoral care adapts to emerging trends and tracking tools help subtly identify where pupils need further support. The school engages in initiatives for Mental Health Week and Anti bullying Week, so that pupils are ready to tackle real life issues and have trusted adults to turn to no matter how small or large the problem.
The unique aspect of pastoral care at St John’s is the focus on children being able to name a broad set of feelings (using Kimochis characters), recognise how and when they arise for them (Zones of Regulation) and develop strategies to manage them. They understand that feelings come and go like weather, but their wellbeing, like the sun, is always there behind the clouds. There is a wide suite of support available during challenging times, from an Independent Listener, Emotional Literacy lesson, Drawing & Talking therapy, Resilience sessions, Zones of Regulation sessions, access to a school counsellor, mentoring and even downtime with school pets (hamsters, guinea pigs, chickens and dogs).
Whether pupils join us as day children or boarders, they are part of a close and supportive community where every individual is known and valued. Relationships between staff and pupils are characterised by trust, consistency and genuine care.
Boarding offers a home away from home environment, with structure and guided activities and trips, in which independence grows naturally. Experienced house staff provide attentive guidance, ensuring that pupils feel secure and supported at every stage. For many families, flexible and weekly boarding offers the ideal balance between school life and home life.
At St John’s Beaumont, the ethos of Cura Personalis (care for the entire person) ensures a holistic approach to nurturing each child.
“The boarding team have been like coparents throughout this journey. The school’s nurturing and valuesled environment has been instrumental in helping our son to grow.”
“Our daughter has loved school and all that it involves. We are hugely grateful for all of your support and encouragement of her.”
