Welcome!

It is with great pleasure and joy that I welcome you to Ascension Parish. In this guide we would like to preview highlights of what our booming parish has to offer. First, there are three municipalities in Ascension Parish: The City of Donaldsonville, the City of Gonzales and the Town of Sorrento. All three are rich with a unique Louisiana culture and heritage. Moreover, Prairieville, St. Amant, Dutchtown, Geismar, Galvez, Lake, Darrow, and a few more places in the parish have much to offer from growing residential areas to some of the finest schools in the state. For an idea of where we sit, Ascension Parish is about a 45-minute drive northwest of the Greater New Orleans area and just 25 minutes southeast of the Greater Baton Rouge area. We are far enough away from the hustle of the big cities, but certainly close enough to visit. If it’s fun and festivals that draw you to our parish, make no mistake that we know how to do that! And we know how to cook! Not everyone is aware that Chef John Folse is from Donaldsonville. By the way, heralded LSU Women’s Gymnastics Coach D-D Breaux is, too!

Annual festivals such as the Hot Air Balloon and Boucherie Festival, the Gonzales Jambalaya Festival and Donaldsonville’s Sunshine Festival add to the quality of life here. The Lamar-Dixon Expo Center is spreading its wings and becoming one the premier Louisiana venues for sporting events, conventions, and high-profile concerts.

Moreover, the Capital Region Planning Commission suggested in 2017 that Ascension Parish is expected to grow from 110,000 to 185,000 people over the next 25 years. While this is largely a guessing game, it serves as evidence of one thing happening now: growth.

Furthermore, our communities are faith-based, and volunteerism is a way of life for many. If there is one silver lining of suffering through the rain that fell upon Ascension Parish in the floods of 2016, it is that our people have learned to trust one another again.

Growth means a healthy economy, where ideas are exchanged. When ideas are exchanged, big things are capable of happening. 2019 was a big year for Ascension Parish. Beginning in 2020 the majority of the Parish Council including the Parish President will be new faces and names. The sewer development project will likely be an ongoing topic as well as the traditional drainage issues that we face in Southern Louisiana. The future is bright here. And it is still a wonderful

Welcome to Ascension Parish! Welcome to Ascension Parish – the gateway to growth and prosperity in south Louisiana. Created in 1807, Ascension Parish is named in honor of the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church. Having served as the capital of Louisiana and the site of a major civil war battle, Ascension Parish is rich in history. From The Sheriff As the Sheriff of Ascension Parish, I want to welcome you to our home! Did you know that sheriffs originated in England as the legal official of the crown responsible for the “shire,” or the rural countryside? The official held the office of “shire reeve,” or as it came to be known, sheriff. The story of Ascension Parish begins with the rural way of life of the French, Spanish, German, Italian, Jewish and African-American peoples who populated this land in its earliest days. They tamed the land as cattlemen and worked the land as farmers. They perfected jambalaya, a hearty rice dish of Spanish, African and French origin that is a jewel of Louisiana cuisine. They welcomed the growth of industry along the Mississippi River, which brought new opportunities in education, science and infrastructure that are the envy of our neighbors regionally, nationally and

globally. Ascension Parish today is a great place to build a home, raise a family, and find a good job. As sheriff, my duties are to serve as the chief law enforcement officer, the tax collector, the officer of the court, the keeper of the jail, and the chairman of the communications district. I am proud to say that Ascension Parish enjoys a low crime rate, well below the Louisiana and Southern average. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is one of the most professional and progressive law enforcement agencies in Louisiana. Ascension Parish Fire Department celebrates new training facility BY LOGAN RIDENOUR

Members of the community gathered today to celebrate the ribbon cutting for a new training tower. The new facility is located in Prairieville and will ensure firefighters are ready to respond to any crisis in the safest possible way.

“We’re trying to be well-rounded . . . whatever it might be, that’s what we’re here for,” Stewart said. “The fire department works closely alongside other community first responders, creating a more well-rounded team in case of emergencies.”

“My goal is to provide our people with the best equipment we can provide.” Fire Chief Mark Stewart said. Better equipment means these firefighters are

tell people that our thin blue line and the fire department’s thin red line have been woven together, never to be separated,” said Sheriff Bobby Webre. Through cohesion and new training equipment, the fire department is now better prepared for emergencies and taking care of community members. “We care greatly for our people. And the main thing is, is that when we care for them that enables them to go out and care for you,” Stewart said.

In 2013, Donaldsonville rebranded itself to become home to industry. Donaldsonville re-emerged as a quality home to the movie and television industry. Donaldsonville didn’t just welcome the movie business though. Also, the petrochemical industry saw the completion of CF Industries $2.1 billiondollar project.

Donaldsonville’s Historic Portal to the Past celebrated in unveiling ceremony BY MICHAEL TORTORICH Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and several local dignitaries assembled at the Ascension Parish Courthouse in Donaldsonville on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 19. The occasion marked the unveiling of the Ascension Parish Tourism Commission’s Historic Portal to the Past, a collection of informational panels installed throughout the city’s historic district. The portals mark seven distinctive locations in one of Louisiana’s oldest cities. Visitors can utilize brochure maps to discover key points within the district: Historic Donaldsonville, the Mississippi

River, Crescent Park, Fort Butler, Louisiana Square, African American Life, and Ascension of Our Lord Church. Donaldsonville Mayor Leroy Sullivan Sr., Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa, Ascension Tourism Executive Director Tracy Browning, Interpretive Direction’s David Guiney, and Nungesser served as speakers during the opening presentation. “This team here, Tracy and crew, makes it easy for me,” said Nungesser, who heads the Louisiana Office of Tourism. “I wish every community around the state had the same love and passion that you have here for your towns and cities. It’s an honor to be here, and we’re going to

continue to work together.” In May, Nungesser announced record Louisiana tourism for 2018. The more than 51 million visitors to the state represented a nine percent increase over the previous year. Visitors spent $18.8 billion, an increase of seven percent over 2017. Louisiana tourism is much more than strolls through the French Quarter, jazz bands, and the “Throw me something, mister” of Mardi Gras parades. Nungesser said the challenge is getting people off of the interstates and into the smaller cities and communities around the state.

“We had an unbelievable year last year,” Nungesser said. “We had a nine percent increase, which was the largest since we’ve been keeping records. Over 51 million people visited little old Louisiana. We’re hitting way above our weight in attracting tourists. What we’ve got to do now is focus on getting them out of the big cities to see all of these great historical sites. What you’ve done here today surely makes my job a lot easier in doing that. Thank you for your love and passion for Donaldsonville.” Browning shared photos of the panels and spoke about the historical significance of each. “The goal was to have a professional product everyone could be proud of and to educate our visitors about our great city,” Browning said. “It needed to be aesthetically-appealing additions to the charm of Donaldsonville.” Guiney said the exhibits are referred to as portals because of the unique content each panel provides to visitors. Kylie Gravois, who handles graphic design and social media marketing for Tour Ascension, designed the brochure.

It features a map of the roughly 2.5-mile walking/riding route. With the brochure, visitors can create a unique experience at their own pace. Along the way, a tourist would be able to discover various points in between portals, opening themselves to a unique self-guided tour. “We really need to emphasize how much help we received on this project,” said Browning, who referenced a flyer that included an assortment of individuals and entities involved with the endeavor. “We couldn’t have done it without all of the help along the way,” she said. Guiney, who is the senior planner for Interpretive Direction, has experience serving an array of agencies, including the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Air Force and Navy. Being from the Washington D.C. area, Guiney said he wanted visitors to see the winding nature of the river. A bird’s eye view, provided by the drone photography of Matthew Noel, and a “You Are Here” marker, gives visitors a sense of perspective.

“It’s very special to have a river walk here,” Browning said. “Not every place has that. People from other places don’t know what the Mississippi River looks like. They want to see it, and we’re very excited that we have that in our parish to share.” The levee top is handicap accessible, has parking space, and includes many benches. “It’s a great place where people can get out of their cars and really take their time and see it. They can jog, walk, or spend as much time as they want there,” Browning said. She credited Lee Melancon, the city’s Director of Community and Economic Development, for his assistance throughout the project. Following the presentation inside the courthouse, the crowd moved outside, and gathered for the unveiling of the Louisiana Square portal. Musician Anthony Marcello sang and played acoustic guitar as Eric Weil of Cafe Lafourche served gumbo and bread pudding for lunch.

Project by Team of Dreams to build first All Abilities Baseball Field BY DARIAN GRAIVSHARK @dariangshark The Team of Dreams is part of the Leadership Ascension Class of 2019. On Tuesday, May 14 the team met at the Ascension Government Complex to present their project to government officials and those involved in the project. The vision of Team of Dreams regarding the baseball field is to provide an ADA compliant sporting facility for the mentally and/or physically disabled children of Ascension Parish. This would allow an opportunity for all children to participate in the organized team sport of baseball/softball. Composed of synthetic turf surfacing placed over a compacted aggregate sub-base will allow for safe, reliable, and an impact friendly surface for children to play. It will also allow for wheelchair access. It will be located at the site of

the current t-ball field on Irma Boulevard. Currently, Ascension Parish has approximately 2,500 students with disabilities. An all disabilities field would allow for consistent exercise and team interactions. The nearest all abilities fields are located in East Baton Rouge and Livingston Parishes.

The project is for the Leadership Ascension Class of 2019 project. Five team members were present at the event: Gary Garber, Bridget Martin, Erica Paige, Roosevelt Vessel, and Chris Fontenot. Jackie Tisdale is their group project mentor.

Chuck Brady, Vice President of Strategic Initiative with Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, said, “We get requests every day from around the country, and this one just felt right. We’ve started with a $150,000 dollar donation lead gift. Hopefully, we can offer more as the project continues.”

Cal Ripken Foundation plans to be involved every step of the way in the project. They want to make sure it gets done, and that there isn’t any project fatigue. They’re also focused on quality versus getting it done cheaply. The foundation also offers training to individuals who will volunteer at the field.

Kevin Lennett of Arlington Ridge Group said, “The Lt. Gov. had a vision to use the resources they had for local parishes. His purpose is to help people, and he has a huge heart for the disabled. We’re talking about a young population of boys and girls who don’t have many opportunities.”

“We’ve done about 85 youth development parks in inner-cities. Seventeen of these parks are adaptive fields like the one being built in Gonzales now. This project, though, is generation changing. It’s historic. There has never been something like this in this community before,” Brady said.

Currently, Team of Dreams has raised the $150,000 dollars lead donation from the foundation, as well as $103,000 dollars in-cash donations, totaling $253,000 dollars. Any in-kind donations help reduce the cash cost of completing the

Boucherie Festival Queens host queens from across Louisiana BY LOGAN RIDENOUR The Boucherie Festival Queens had a fun Sunday in Sorrento alongside other queens from different pageants throughout Louisiana. The event was hosted by former Miss Boucherie Maci Marse and Teen Miss Ava Savoy. The day began with food and crafts, like painting piggy banks in honor of the Boucherie Festival. Today is a day for all different queens from around Louisiana to just come out and see what Sorrento has and basically just for me to have a day to celebrate

with them before my reign ends,” Marse said. Marse has been active in the community promoting the Lions Club and their programs since she won Miss Boucherie. The Boucherie Festival began as the traditional butchering of hogs in preparation for winter. This time of year was ideal for keeping meat due to the colder weather. The Sorrento Lions Club aimed to keep this tradition alive and began holding the “boucherie” in the 1960s. Since then the boucherie’s popularity

has grown and expanded to become the festival it is today. The festival now serves as a fundraiser for the Sorrento Lions Club and the Lions Club Camp. The camp is held every summer. It is free for children with special needs, diabetes, respiratory disorders, and childhood cancer. Since her crowning, Marse has been involved in spreading awareness about the Lions Club and their various outreach programs. The Boucherie Festival was held in conjunction with the Ascension Hot Air Balloon Festival beginning September 27 at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center.

Ascension fireman celebrates festival in powered parachute BY GREG FISCHER @AscensionEditor It was early morning, before the sun came up. The grass at Lamar Dixon was still cool and wet. Hundreds, if not thousands of spectators would fill the area later that day for the Ascension Hot Air Balloon and Boucherie Festival. A few guys who pilot powered parachutes gathered outside their campers before taking flight. Pilots included Terry McConnell, a Galvez Lake Volunteer Fireman since 1976 and another Ascension Parish resident, Ben Harrison, also a former fireman. Others included Kelly Precht, Ray Morrow, and Scott Moss. McConnell had agreed to take one of us from the newspaper on a ride to capture some images of the Hot Air Balloons on their traditional morning flight. “This is the most powered parachutes you’ll see in Gonzales all year,” McConnell said. He added that himself, along with

Harrison and another Prairieville resident were the only three powered parachute pilots in the parish. Say that five times fast. What is a powered parachute? Well, it is a small craft. The model that McConnell uses is an Air Wolf two-seater. The craft weighs under 500 pounds, and is propelled by a huge fan similarly to an air boat. When the craft reaches a certain speed, a huge parachute lifts it from the ground and causes it to take flight. Want to go up? Increase throttle. Down? Let go and glide. The parachute is made of 550 square-feet of material. A typical skydiving chute is about 120 square foot. McConnell’s particular chute is designed after the “Thin Red Line,” a fireman’s symbol. He said he flies 2-3 times a week. His craft was named Ruby by his wife, Debbie. “It’s the fourth one that I own,” he said. “My wife calls Ruby the woman in my life.”

Precht said that each year in midSeptember about 20-30 pilots of these powered parachutes get together at Sweet Lake near Lake Charles, La. for a few days of flying and alligator hunting. Moreover, “Ruby” has been used in more than one search and rescue operation. More law enforcement agencies are noticing the benefit to having one or two of these crafts on hand. McConnell recalled searching for the body of a missing LSU student and a Donaldsonville child in the past. But aside from the rescue angle, the other practical use for McConnell is relaxation. He said that if he is having a tough day, all of his worries seem small when he is soaring above Ascension Parish. He said he’s taken the craft to many beautiful places and recalled Arkansas and the California coast. Besides flying and fighting fires, McConnell also owns a local pressure washing company that keeps him busy, Terry McConnell’s Exterior Cleaning at 225-978-3869.

For the beginning of the school year, the school had only been partially open allowing students to maintain their education uninterrupted. “Learning at Bullion has never been compromised, and our students have flourished,” Bullion Primary Principal Marguerite Guillot said.

STEM Event held for ninth grade girls at East Ascension High School BY LOGAN RIDENOUR BASF and Ascension Public Schools partnered for a “girl-powered” STEM Day at East Ascension High School. Throughout the day, ninth-grade girls from all four high schools learned how to build and program robots, while developing a better understanding of STEM career options. Ronda Matthews, the Career and Technical Education Supervisor for Ascension Public Schools, said days like this really benefit the students because they don’t always get this type of education in classrooms. “What’s good about this, we teach

math and we teach science, but we teach them as two separate subjects. STEM blends them, makes them come together, and then brings them a little step further because they’re doing realworld application,” she said. Not only did the day bridge two subjects, it also brought girls from throughout the parish together. “Even though we have four different high schools represented we’ve had Gators helping Spartans, Spartans helping Griffins, griffins helping Tigers . . . It’s been really encouraging to watch the teamwork that’s happened as well,” Matthews said.

“All the girls seemed excited to be here, you could see the teamwork, you could see them communicating with each other. I think there’s a little bit of a competitive edge to it as well,” said Sarah Haneline, the Workforce Development Manager for BASF. BASF also held an employee panel to give the girls insight into different STEM career paths they could take out of high school. “BASF is supporting this because we believe in girls. We want girls to have the experience of learning about STEM, learning about their opportunities, and understanding they have a place,” Haneline said.
