Blues Greens

Blue and green Christmas decor is a modern, refreshing twist on traditional holiday design, combining the familiar evergreen hues with the calming color of blue. The color pairing is chosen for both aesthetic and symbolic reasons. A color marriage of tranquility, the calming blues symbolize the peace of a cold, starry winter night sky and traditional color green evokes the hope of new life in spring after winter’s darkness. Blue lights and decor have been seen to represent hope and offer comfort, a sentiment that resonates deeply this holiday season. In a religious context, blue is a hue often associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus. The combination of blue and green provides an updated, clean, and layered look for holidays that feels both fresh and collected. As colors, naturally paired and adjacent on the color wheel, blue and green look innately beautiful together, offering a calming yet vibrant aesthetic that can be adapted to different personal styles. From a charming and rustic look to sophistication or even a coastal vibe, the visual results take center stage during your celebration.

The blue and green holiday décor combines traditional and modern design themes to create elegance and tranquility.

There is a vast continuum of blue and green shades to choose from to complement your home. Incorporating a blending of blue-greens, or varying shades of green from emerald to sage, creates multiple opportunities for your holiday decorating to meld seamlessly into your core décor scheme.

Inspired art of a

Winter Season,

a sentimental journey

rea artist Suzanne Moser warms the hearts of many with sentimental depictions of her thoughtful and emotional scenes. Her nostalgic nod to Christmas makes us smile wistfully. Inspired Home asked this gifted artist for her thoughts on the intricate images she creates.

Wistful neighborhood charm is depicted in Moser’s Neighborhood Christmas, a wintery painting, and her representation of community.
This Christmas Eve scene of Santa’s arrival, Christmas Cove, brings a smile to everyone’s face, young and old.
Moser’s Father Christmas is a delightful, painted mosaic with hidden surprises.
Suzanne Moser

IH: The imagery you portray seems personal, combined with charming whimsy. What enables you to create art that moves people emotionally?

SM: My childhood memories and my love of the Christmas season are what speak to me when I paint my holiday works. I want to re-create those moments. It might be the middle of summer, but if I am in my studio painting a Christmas scene, I am full of the spirit of Christmas! Most of my holiday art begins with a poem or rhyme that I write based on a Christmas experience or a special joy that occurs at that time of year. Then, with paint, I illustrate that visual scene as I picture it in my mind. I grew up loving nostalgic Christmas books and cards, so I believe my ideas are also drawn from that.

IH: What mediums do you prefer to work with?

SM: When I first discovered my desire to paint, I was an at-home mom on a budget. I wasn’t quite sure I would stick with the idea of painting as a hobby, so I went to the hobby store and bought the least expensive acrylic paint and brushes on sale. Today, 33 years later, I've developed my own style of work. I still use the same paint, but I do invest in good brushes. I enjoy acrylic paint. It dries quickly, and I've learned over the years by experimenting how to change its texture for different styles of painting. For example, my mosaic paintings are layered paintings that create a dimensional appearance.

IH: Describe yourself as an artist.

SM: This is always the hardest question! I live in a city with some of the best artists in the country. My artwork isn't created to be controversial, to demonstrate mastery of a skill, or to be decorative. I paint charming, detailed scenes for my own enjoyment. If anyone else enjoys the intricacies, the humor, or the message, then I am successful as an artist.

The spice of life…

Warm spices such as cloves, coriander, cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger play starring roles in dishes both sweet and savory, and according to science, they are beneficial to our health.

Aromas wafting through the kitchen on these cold days often reveal the comforting fragrance of warm spices. Spices such as cloves, coriander, cinnamon, cardamom, allspice and ginger play starring roles in delightful dishes, both sweet and savory, and according to science, they are beneficial to our health. During the spice trade five centuries ago, they were a symbol of wealth and status. Nations sailed vast oceans between Africa, Asia and Europe in search of them, and merchants became wealthy trading spices valued equally to that of gold and silver. Today, spices are relatively inexpensive, allowing us a vast array of culinary options that positively impact our health.

SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS

Spices are packed with beneficial compounds and can be a flavorful way to enhance your health. From providing antioxidants that fight inflammation and protect your cells from damage to improving digestion and lowering blood pressure, warm spices can give your health a boost.

WARM SPICES — PERFECT FOR COLD WINTER DAYS

Cinnamon: This spice is known for its ability to help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce pain and stiffness in your joints. Cinnamon may also provide hearthealthy benefits by lowering high blood

cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Ginger: A traditional remedy for digestive issues, nausea, and motion sickness, ginger also possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Turmeric: Best known for its use in Indian curry dishes, it is a superfood. Its active compound, curcumin, is a potent antiinflammatory agent that may support brain health in helping reduce cognitive decline and lower the risk of chronic diseases.

Cloves: They are rich in antioxidants and compounds like eugenol, which help fight infections and contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Nutmeg: Studies are showing promising results that this spice offers protection against degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Cardamom: This fragrant spice is known for its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Cumin: This warm, commonly used spice contains cancer-fighting properties and possesses anti-inflammatory attributes.

Cayenne Pepper: Capsaicin, found in cayenne pepper, can boost metabolism, aid in fat burning, may help lower blood pressure and has pain-relieving properties.

TRY THESE EASY TIPS TO WARM UP CHILLY WINTER DAYS

• Mix a teaspoon each of cumin, coriander and sea salt to keep by the stove or on the table for an easy way to amp up flavor in

your meals with less sodium.

• Substitute ground cardamom for nutmeg in pies and cookies for a spicy, floral note.

• Cook rice or other grains with star anise, cinnamon and cardamom pods to add surprising and satisfying flavor.

• Root vegetables love warm spices. Try roasting carrots with cumin and ginger, or beets with cumin and coriander.

• Create a paste of two teaspoons ground cumin with 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil and a pinch of sea salt. Rub on chicken or fish before roasting. Delicious!

• For the holidays, mull cider or wine by simmering star anise and cinnamon sticks.

• Add 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, cumin, or coriander to a vinaigrette for a unique flavor.

THE HEALTHIEST WAY TO USE SPICES

Whether you use spices fresh or dried, you’ll still get beneficial compounds. Experts agree that frying or grilling can decrease antioxidant levels in spices, while microwave cooking, simmering, or stewing foods can actually heighten them. While adding warm spices to your diet is beneficial, it can’t replace healthy eating. These spices should complement and add delicious flavor to an already healthy, balanced diet. Before taking supplements, consult your doctor about possible interactions with any prescribed medications you are taking. Enjoy flavorful and healthy eating this holiday season!

WHAT IS GARAM MASALA?

Garam masala is a complex medley of spices, including sweet cinnamon, spicy heat from peppercorns, tanginess from coriander, earthy cumin, and fragrant cardamom. There is no single garam masala recipe; the ingredients change according to region and cook. In Northern India, garam masala will be aromatic and mild. The farther south you travel in India, the hotter the spices will become. The most common type of garam masala originated from Northern India, where cold winters required spices with a warming quality. The spice is used in most regions of India as well as in Pakistan and Iran. The warm and aromatic flavor profile makes it a versatile spice, used in both meat and vegetarian dishes to add a savory depth. It is widely used in dishes such as curries, stews, rice dishes, and lentil dishes. It can also be added to roasted vegetables, grilled meats, and even incorporated into more experimental dishes, such as roast potatoes, soups, and omelets. Traditionally, cinnamon, peppercorns, cardamom, coriander, and cumin seeds are toasted over heat, cooled, and ground; however, using goodquality pre-ground spices is easy and tastes great.

MASALA CHAI WITH GARAM MASALA

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup water

1 cup milk (whole milk, half-and-half, or dairy-free alternatives all work)

1–2 tsp sugar, to taste

1/4 tsp garam masala spice mix

1 tsp black tea leaves (or 1 teabag)

1/2 tsp fresh ginger, grated (optional, for extra flavor)

METHOD:

In a saucepan, combine the water and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.

Add the garam masala spice mix and simmer for 1–2 minutes to infuse the flavors.

Stir in the tea leaves and sugar, then pour in the milk. Bring the mixture to a boil again.

As the tea reaches a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer. For a stronger flavor, continue simmering for 2–3 more minutes. Watch carefully to prevent it from boiling over.

Strain the tea into a mug to remove the tea leaves, spices, and ginger. Serve hot and enjoy!

The Beauty of Meringue,

form and finish

This beautiful and billowy mixture was invented in Europe in 1720 by the Swiss pastry chef, Gasparini, who lived in the Swiss town of Meiringen, giving the dessert its name. French and Italian chefs soon thereafter created their own version, resulting in three different types of meringue: French, Italian, and Swiss.

The popularity and beauty of meringue lie in its delicate, ethereal appearance and its ability to transform from a simple mixture of egg whites and sugar into a cloud-like confection. From its glossy peaks to its complex textures, meringue offers both visual and culinary artistry.

A perfectly prepared meringue possesses a smooth, shiny surface that catches the light. Achieving this polished look requires a process of gradually adding superfine sugar to whipped egg whites. The eventual whipped stiffness of meringue allows it to be piped into elegant and decorative forms. Meringue acts as a blank canvas for creative expression. Professional chefs use meringue

The holidays are happier with the beauty and simplicity of meringue. From glossy peaks to complex textures, it offers visual and culinary artistry. Meringue is a blank canvas for creative expression.
This delightful wreath was created by tracing a 6-inch circle on parchment paper. Pipe swirls of white meringue onto the circle. Repeat a second layer on top of the first ring, then pipe the trees.

MERINGUE CHRISTMAS TREES

Not only are they adorable, but they are easy to make and they will look great on your holiday cookie tray.

INGREDIENTS:

4 eggs, room temperature

1 cup granulated sugar (preferably superfine/castor)

Pinch of salt

½ tsp cream of tartar

1 tsp vanilla extract, or 1/8 tsp almond extract, or 1/4 tsp peppermint extract

Green food coloring, about 20 drops, depending on preferred color intensity.

Tiny sprinkles of your choice

Powdered sugar (Sift on the tree just before serving, like a dusting of snow.)

METHOD:

Preheat the oven to 200°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set them aside.

Carefully separate the eggs using two small bowls. After each egg is separated, pour the egg white into the bowl you'll be using to beat them.

Beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Add the cream of tartar and continue beating the whites until they hold soft peaks. Using the mixer, slowly add the sugar one tablespoon at a time. Add a pinch of salt with the final tablespoon of sugar. Continue beating the egg whites until they’re thick, glossy and hold stiff peaks. Add the vanilla, almond or peppermint extract and beat briefly to combine.

Carefully add food coloring to the bowl, then gently fold it in just until evenly distributed.

Using a star nozzle, pipe in circular motions, pulling upward into small Christmas tree shapes onto parchment paper or a baking mat.
The stiff peaks shown here require beating egg whites until they are dense, glossy, and the peaks are firm and pointed.
Achieving the right stiffness is not difficult, but it is important for the success of your confection. This depicts a soft peak.
Pipe the trees on a baking mat or parchment paper, at least one inch apart. Lightly sprinkle the sprinkles over the top and sides of the meringue trees. Bake one hour, then turn off the oven. When baked slowly at a low temperature, meringue develops a brittle, crispy shell while retaining a marshmallow-like center.

Be gentle, as you don't want to remove the air from the meringue. Add the meringue to a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle and pipe it in circular motions, pulling upward into small Christmas tree shapes onto the parchment paper or baking mats, at least 1 inch apart. Lightly sprinkle the sprinkles over the top and sides of the meringue trees.

Bake one hour, then turn off the oven. Don't open the oven door or remove the meringues. Allow them to sit in the unopened oven for at least two hours and preferably overnight. (When the trees are hard to the touch and can be easily removed from the parchment paper, they're done. There shouldn't be any color around the edges; if there is, that means they're slightly over-baked.)

Remove the trees from the parchment paper. Store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry location (do not refrigerate).

Before serving, sift a tiny dusting of powdered sugar over the tops, if desired.

MERINGUE TIPS:

Be sure everything you use to make the meringue, from the bowls to the beaters, is squeaky clean and dry. Use the freshest eggs possible, room temperature. Add sugar gradually so it dissolves well. Superfine/castor sugar dissolves more easily.

Beat to stiff peaks, to bake properly. (Don’t overbeat)

If they seem chewy, it's possible they were under-baked or they've absorbed too much moisture from the air after baking. Just return them to the oven at 200°F for ten minutes, then let them cool completely. They should be light and crispy once again!

Enjoy and happy holidays!

as a medium to create intricate and delicate forms that hold their shape as they bake. Versatile, by nature, you can add food coloring for a tie-dye or striped effect, use jam for a marbled swirl, or finish it with decorative toppings. When baked slowly at a low temperature, a meringue can develop a brittle, crispy shell while retaining a soft, marshmallow-like center. This duality of texture is a key feature of pavlova and meringue cookies. In its many dramatic forms, one thing remains: the delicate structure of meringue allows it to dissolve on the tongue, creating a light and unforgettable, meltin-your-mouth experience. Enjoy this easy and impressive holiday version!

Professional chefs use meringue as a medium to create artistic, delicate forms that hold their shape as they bake. This Pavlova-like Christmas tree was created by four rounds of meringue, layered with whipped cream and fruit.

Here we are...

Here we are, another year gone by, and the holiday season is upon us. After a tumultuous year, I’m ready for it to be behind us. Let’s think of November as the “Ides of Autumn” to wipe the slate clean and enter December full of holiday spirit and optimism, maybe even fueled by a couple of martinis if needed.

In the late 50s and early 60s, we were a society of food and entertainment. Without all the distracting technology, families ate dinner together and, heaven forbid, had conversations. Television was a treat, and families would huddle together around a

small, black-and-white screen.

My girlfriend’s father would arrive home, and his wife would duly have his cocktail waiting for him. A little pat on the head for the children, then off to the den to have his cocktail and read the paper until dinner was ready. It was different in my house as my mother worked. I would be happy to lend a hand in the kitchen. My dad, upon arrival, would set the table while my lazy brothers, thinking they had dodged the bullet, would end up doing the clean-up.

The era was changing and food was brought to the center stage. On TV, ladies

with teased hairdos in pretty aprons tried to sell us frozen TV dinners and dehydrated boxed items, all for the convenience of the busy housewife. This, I am afraid to say, was the beginning of our culinary downfall. But do not fear, one great thing came out of this new society.

The cocktail party is an iconic American classic. The drinks, food, music and revelry would lift anyone’s spirits. The classiest people would be dancing to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. These cocktail parties were a great lead-up to Christmas and the biggest party of all – New Year’s Eve.

A QUICK WORD ON THANKSGIVING DAY AND CHRISTMAS DAY DINNER.

Every year, I get several culinary magazines at this time of year, presenting unique ways to make dinner. I am sure there is a room full of food “experts” somewhere with the mission of coming up with different ways to cook a turkey or meat, with several ways to present side dishes.

Let’s agree once and for all and save these folks the time.

Thanksgiving: Roast turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, garden vegetables, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

Christmas: Roast Beef, Yorkshire pudding, roasted potatoes, Brussels sprouts, candied carrots, and chocolate in any form.

NOW TO THE REAL MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS Family time. Take the time to appreciate each other. Put all electronic devices aside – and engage. There was a time when I was younger, when Spam was the main course. Be thankful for what you have.

And lastly…

Peace, love, and gobble up every day like it was your last.

hearts& Preparing home

From as early as she can remember, Kinsey Wallace was surrounded by construction and design. Her father began his construction career in the framing industry and as a young girl, she would tag along with him, driving from job site to job site. With more “hands-on” experiences available, she and her sister would help clean up their father’s construction site if extra help was needed. It was in high school that she began to realize her innate appreciation for design. She became the family’s decorator and space planner, rearranging rooms in her parents’ home and relishing the holidays as a time to implement her design prowess. Today, Wallace is a full-time real estate agent, real estate photographer, Inspired Home staff photographer, and the exclusive sales representative and designer for her father’s construction company, Red Leaf Homes. Armed with natural talent and years of experience, building a new home for Wallace and her partner, Riley Vareberg, presented a new opportunity.

A charming seasonal sense of comfort and warmth takes center stage here.

The beauty of the natural world envelopes this festive room. Neutrals and complementary textures, including fresh greenery, foster relaxation.

Kinsey and Riley share a special sense of satisfaction in owning a home that was built by her father’s company, Red Leaf Homes.

An organic holiday theme was the end design goal of Wallace. The neutral colors of the cabinetry and tile create a perfect backdrop.

The warmth of wood elements adds an authentic Nordic feel, and the hand-in-hand gingerbread brings a pleasing, fragrant ambiance.

After a few sleepless nights and initial trepidation, her unwavering fearlessness prevailed. She played a major role from the very beginning – designing the floor plan, exterior elevations, and making every decision down to the interior finishes. “There were definitely some sleepless nights along the way, mostly from second-guessing choices and realizing just how many tiny details go into building a home,” Wallace shares. With the gravity of the couple’s personal investment came a great sense of responsibility and accountability – something Red Leaf Homes

has taken pride in for over 20 years. She adds, “Through all the curveballs, I found a real sense of beauty in the process: adapting, learning, and seeing it all come together in the end was incredibly rewarding. I can confidently say it all worked out exactly as it was meant to.”

In any building project, formalizing design plans was a vital step. Wallace explains, “Functionality was my top priority from the start. Our floor plan is a bit different from most, with minimal built-in storage, so it was important to maximize every square foot. I wanted each space to serve a purpose and flow efficiently, ensuring that the design was both beautiful and livable.”

Architectural design and space planning were thought out and executed. Wallace had a good sense of what was important to them. “The exterior, our

A modern “yesteryear” feeling of simplicity and elegance is entwined with textures of wood, woven baskets and natural gingham fabrics.

A theme of natural woven baskets, neutral colors in marble and stone, dainty floral patterns, and gold metallics set the mood.

Carried through into this half-bath is the charm of an understated and natural simplicity motif. Elegance is defined by multiple textures all supporting each other in a sophisticated and elegant manner.

The thoughtful design, as you pass from room to room, connects and creates overall harmony throughout the entire home. It was a key theme that Wallace desired and skillfully achieved in their new residence.

main living areas, and the kitchen were my biggest design priorities. I didn’t want our exterior to look cookie-cutter; I wanted it to have character and feel different from the typical neighborhood style.” Inside, Wallace designed the main living areas to feel open and welcoming, with a major focus on the kitchen. “It’s truly the heart of our home, so I put a lot of thought into making it both functional and beautiful.” As animal lovers and pet owners, providing pet-friendly areas in the new house was also an important consideration for the couple. She kept their pets in mind and made sure her plans included durable finishes and spaces that worked for them, too. Their three cats, Dottie, Debbie and Louie, plus the two dogs, Finley and Murphy, are extremely “comfortable” with her decisions.

As the interior designer, Wallace gathered inspiration samples for the building project. With strong visual instincts, she tapped into her

creative side, allowing herself free rein to add their personality to each room. Taking the lead from planning to completion, Wallace learned valuable lessons along the way. “Take your time and trust your instincts. Building a home can feel overwhelming with all the decisions, but the most meaningful spaces are the ones that reflect you. Don’t get caught up in perfection. Focus on how you want your home to feel, and everything will come together beautifully!”

Since her teen years, decorating her parents’ home for the holidays, Wallace has come full circle by celebrating Christmas in their new home. The holidays have always been her favorite time of year, rich with traditions and slowing the everyday pace to enjoy simple moments. Wallace feels a real sense of satisfaction, “This year feels extra special since it’s our first Christmas in our new home. There’s something so meaningful about decorating a space that you’ve poured your heart into and seeing it come to life during the holidays. Hosting family and creating new memories here is truly what makes it feel complete!”

An unexpected and flavorful taste of Scandinavia, this meal blends all the right ingredients to surprise and delight your holiday guests.

STORY
BY LAUREN FERRAGUT CARLSON

Scandinavian food is known for its cured meats, mostly everything pickled, fresh fish, mussels and meats enjoyed year-round. It has garnered a reputation for being bland, which I’m finding to be wildly inaccurate.

GSwedish chef Magnus Nilsson is known as a champion of sustainability, using ingredients that are foraged, farmed, raised and hunted on the land.

rowing up, meals were either Sicilian or Norwegian.

My dad’s family roots led to Sicily, and my mom’s heritage is directly linked to Norway. It made sense to have manicotti, cacciatore, and lots of artichokes, but my mother’s chicken curry casserole always confused me. Over the past few months, I’ve been cooking my way through Magnus Nilsson’s “The Nordic Cookbook.” Nilsson, a Swedish chef, is globally recognized for his former Michelin-starred restaurant Fäviken in Sweden. Known as a champion of sustainability, he used ingredients that were foraged, farmed, raised, and hunted on the land. The chicken curry casserole started to make more sense to me the day I discovered Magnus Nilsson’s Scandinavian dish – pork tenderloin, bananas, and curry.

Scandinavian food is known for its cured meats, mostly everything pickled, fresh fish, mussels, and meat that is enjoyed year-round. The mild taste of Scandinavian food shares a similar flavor identity with typical Midwestern food, which tends to be humble in its flavor. Nordic cuisine

has garnered a reputation for being predominantly bland, which I have found wildly inaccurate.

After the Industrial Revolution, there was a greater variety and availability of food due to expanded trade routes. Warm spices like cardamom, curry, cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper, found their way into Scandinavian recipes and are iconic flavor profiles, especially in desserts. Hundreds of years prior, historical accounts reveal the Vikings had traveled to the far east in their longboats, as far as central Asia, bringing back and utilizing these aromatic spices.

Recipes like this one and others with sweet and salty combinations are appealing because they create a dynamic, complex taste experience that stimulates different taste bud receptors simultaneously. This phenomenon, known as flavor layering, also enhances both individual tastes, with salt amplifying sweetness and sugar balancing saltiness. The sweetness of the bananas and the salt of the pork in this recipe create a surprising and complex, flavorful combination – warm, satisfying and totally unexpected.

One of my favorite cookbooks – The Nordic Cook Book.

WHAT IS WHITE PEPPER?

White pepper is the seed of a fully ripened peppercorn from the same plant as black pepper, but with its outer husk removed after soaking in water to ferment. This process results in a smoother flavor, with a distinct floral aroma and a different type of heat than black pepper. It is often used in cooking to avoid visible black flecks, particularly in dishes where a clean appearance is desired, such as in cream sauces in Nordic, French or Asian cuisine.

This dish is incredibly easy to make and can be served to your family or guests in 30 minutes. I do encourage using white pepper, which is classic to any Scandinavian dish. These pepper berries are picked when ripe and then sundried. Unlike black pepper, their skin is removed before drying, which yields a milder, floral note. Look for Muntok white pepper, if you can find it, but any type at your local market will do nicely.

SCANDINAVIAN PORK TENDERLOIN WITH BANANAS AND CURRY

A creative, warm and satisfying winter dish inspired by Swedish cuisine

INGREDIENTS:

Butter, for frying

1 ¾ lb pork tenderloin, trimmed and cut into 1-inch slices

Salt and white pepper to taste

3 bananas, halved lengthwise

1 ¼ cups cream

1 Tbsp curry powder (I do a heavy tablespoon, closer to 1 ½ or 2)

METHOD:

Preheat oven to 350˚ F Bake time: 30 minutes

Melt butter in a pan. Season the meat with salt and pepper and fry until brown. Transfer to a roasting dish. Add another generous amount of butter to the pan and fry the bananas on both sides until golden. Place them on top of the pork. Add the cream to the frying pan and stir the bottom of the pan to deglaze it; then add curry powder. Season the cream to taste. Pour over the meat and bananas. Bake until the pork is cooked, but still pink in the center, approximately 30 minutes. Serve with your favorite rice or noodles. Enjoy!

WHAT IS CURRY?

It is not a single spice but a mixture of many, and it is a Western invention inspired by Indian cuisine. The term “curry spice” most often refers to a curry powder, a blended seasoning that varies in ingredients and flavor. No two curry powders are exactly alike. Most blends include a combination of these spices – turmeric, cumin, coriander, and fenugreek. The golden-yellow spice has a sweet, pungent, and earthy flavor.

Winter

Green

Alabaster. Chiffon. Egg shell. Cotton. Snow. Call it what you want, but there is only one color to the Midwest landscape in the winter: white. White can be beautiful, like the layer of fresh snow coating the entire neighborhood after an evening snowfall, sparkling under the quiet morning light. But this absence of color can also be bleak, an extreme shift from the fiery reds of fall and the lush greens of summer and spring. Yet there is an effective way to combat the seemingly never-ending white of winter — by bringing the green outdoors in.

The perfect plant for the job: succulents. Over the last few years, their popularity has exploded. We love them for their hardiness and versatility, putting them at the top of the indoor plant market. Anyone who hasn’t yet been swept up in the succulent trend certainly knows a few houseplants that fall into this broad category: aloe vera, snake plants, and cacti. They’re all included in the succulent family.

Succulents are a simple way to bring life into your home during the colder months — literally, by producing oxygen. NASA research has shown that houseplants can remove up to 87 percent of air toxins within 24 hours. Additionally, studies have revealed that indoor plants can enhance concentration and productivity, lower stress levels, and boost your mood — making them one of the best decor options for your home. Better air quality, increased productivity, and less stress? Count me in.

Succulents are a simple way to bring life into your home during the colder months — literally, by producing

oxygen.

The birds seem in awe of this cheery and wily snake plant. Easy to care for and always verdant green, it is a welcome sight year-round.

Like humans, succulents require a little extra care during the winter months. Because they are native to dry habitats, they thrive in areas with as much light as possible. Put them on your windowsill as a distraction from the falling snow outside. Arrange them near windows that face east or west to capture the light at sunrise or sunset. A minimum of three hours of sunlight allows plants to photosynthesize properly and grow, resulting in happier and healthier succulents.

These plants also require less water in the winter, and typically go into dormancy when the weather gets cold. Put down the watering can and opt for a squirt bottle. Overwatering can cause root rot, especially with specific kinds of succulents (hello, cacti members of the family). The soil needs to dry out a bit between watering, imitating the native dry habitat to which they are accustomed. If the soil feels moist, wait a day or two before spritzing. This little hack alone can save you the unnecessary stress of trying to determine whether your plants are getting enough H20. Plant parenthood can be tricky, especially when the cold Midwest weather alters the plants’ typical care routine. Even so, succulents are built for survival.

Try incorporating a few of these incredible plants into your home this winter. Design a fairy garden for your kitchen table with hens and chicks plants. Repurpose mismatching teacups into tiny pots for a set of echeveria plants. Add life to any room by hanging a pot overflowing with a fascinating succulent display of string of pearls.

Regardless of your interior design style or the size of your space, succulents will fit right in and breathe some muchneeded life into your house. And who knows? By the time the snow finally vanishes, you might have a newly discovered green thumb after caring for your thriving succulents for a few months. And, just in time for you to start adopting a few more succulents for your summer outdoor décor.

Burro’s Tail, Aloe and Crassula create an interesting trio of succulents with varied textures.
Succulents are a great choice for a winter green presence.
Hens and Chicks are low-maintenance and boast unique shapes and colors.

Try incorporating a few of these incredible plants into your home this winter.
