I continue to give 110% of myself to my clients and appreciate those therapeutic and motivational relationships and their businesses. I am blessed with my ability to work independently to provide the standard of care I feel people deserve It is a gift to see positive change and hear the responses from my clients as they gain small victories! There is nothing I’d rather be doing than actively listening, counseling, coaching, educating, advocating, and facilitating the idea that challenges are opportunities and helping people feel inspired!

I hope this magazine serves to carry on my mantra in a world that is full of unknowns, so that we strive to feel inspired and "InspireOn" each day. Endless Goodbyes

Throughout our lives, there are certain ages when we find it easier to connect wit even those from different generations. For me, my grandmother was my best friend. When I gazed into her eyes, I could always catch a glimpse of the vibrant 20-year-old she shared with me through her stories, right up until her last kiss. Though her body changed, her free spirit defied the passage of time. Unlike parents, grandparents often enjoy unique luxuries, and their role can be a joyful one.

As adult children, our perspectives shift, revealing complexities we may not have previously noticed about our parents. Serious illnesses or the passage of time can necessitate support even for the strongest among them.

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can rob individuals of their independence. I watched my father struggle to care for my mother as her condition worsened. During this journey, we shared precious moments that felt like a second childhood—a renewed chance to connect, to fall asleep beside her, and to rebuild dreams for a future. Even toward the end, my mother recognized family, expressing thoughts about loved ones who had passed. She whispered truths, conveying her need to communicate in one of her final days.

The hospice staff and environment were blessings during this time. Watching her fight to stay present was heartbreaking. I cherished the remarkable aspects I began to rediscover about her. The illness brought countless goodbyes even while she held my hand. I now realize the importance of the memories she wanted to create, especially knowing her Own diagnosis long before anyone else.

When I read what I wrote about her, it wasn’t a eulogy; it was a testament to her impact on my life and the lives of others. Her passion as a school speech pathologist and her fierce determination shaped me. Despite her struggles, she persisted, not wanting to leave her soulmate.

The weight of every “goodbye” felt insurmountable, particularly in the face of Alzheimer’s. Each loss of ability added to the emotional toll on our family. She will always be a beautiful woman, wife, mom, sister and grandmother to me. She carried herself with integrity and was passionate about every child receiving services needed. She will live on as an advocate, and runner up to Miss Brooklyn.

Ultimately, I believe a person’s life is measured by the quality of connections rather than the quantity of time. t believe her spirit will forever soar, and she will be “one hell of an angel.”

SELF-DETERMINATION WHAT IT TAKES…

omes unexpectedly ill, it takes time to process the situation, spouse receiving the diagnosis. As the illness progresses, each experience is unique. Some individuals become aware of their decline, losing vital skills that impact their daily lives—no longer able to drive, experiencing confusion in choosing clothing, or finding comfort in wearing multiple layers. The hardest part is waiting for your spouse to return home. The clock strikes 2:00 PM the time he said he'd be back. When you call, he mentions the yogurts lined up by flavor in the refrigerator, but doubt creeps in. You consider calling your daughter for support, but you don't feel like yourself. The weight of it all can be overwhelming, leading to thoughts of wanting to die. Instead, your family seeks help from psychiatrists, experiments with medications, and eventually turns to hospice care four years later.Looking back, I realize the meaningful moments I shared with her during her illness. I am grateful for those times, even as they remind me of her suffering. Hope took on new meanings throughout her journey.

When someone has been ill for many years, trusting physicians becomes challenging, particularly for those who struggle to acknowledge their condition. Each person's experience of disease progression is unique, and awareness of cognitive or physical decline varies. For caregivers, concerns arise about driving, getting dressed, and even remembering to eat. Waiting for a spouse to return can feel eternal. As cognitive and physical abilities wane, moods can fluctuate dramatically, leading to cycles of depression, anger, and paranoia. The inability to navigate familiar places only adds to the frustration. For some, awareness can trigger suicidal thoughts. The turmoil inside their minds often goes unnoticed, manifesting as confusion, loss of coordination, or memory issues. Disease progression can be rapid at times, marked by the deterioration of social skills and interests.

Reflecting on my experiences, I wish I had recognized the gravity of her illness earlier. She concealed her diagnosis from us, and while I cherish the moments we had, I would trade them in an instant to spare her the suffering. I believe things happen for a reason, but much of her experience was torturous for both her and our family. Although we had more time together, her suffering seemed unending. I wish for New York State to adopt policies supporting self-determination and dying with dignity. She often expressed her desire for things to be different but passed away in hospice care almost five years after her significant decline—seven years after her diagnosis became known to us, long after her illness began. If individuals can express their wishes soon after diagnosis, they should have the right to choose their path, guided by their physician or proxy. This could alleviate overcrowding and poor conditions in facilities, where we often found her hurt or neglected against her wishes. Home and institutional settings provided little safety or quality of life.

I cannot fathom why anyone would not choose quality of life when given the option. Trusting the process is difficult; I know she “chose” when to “go.” However, the greatest gift would have been for her to have choices and to witness a compassionate end. Deep down, her doctors sensed her awareness of her situation. Despite her strength, I know she didn’t want to leave my dad. In memory of my mom, for all she did, I pray she felt no pain and that she is surrounded by love.

Perspectives through Generations

A Generation Coping with the Need for Resilience

Numerous articles indicate that Generation Z experiences heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and mental health issues, alongside feelings of loss, trauma, a strong opposition to war, and advocacy for climate change. They also express significant fears regarding their careers and financia stability. Mental health challenges stem from academic pressures, social media influences, and societal obstacles, further exacerbated by loss and prolonged illness due to the Covid pandemic and the side effects of vaccinations.

Generation Z faces unique challenges related to social media, having relied heavily on technology throughout the pandemic. This has led to negative effects, including online comparison, cyberbullying, and diminished self-esteem. Many in this generation have lost vital in-person communication skills that are typically developed during formative years. This phenomenon, which I refer to as the “pajama era,” saw young people rolling out of bed to turn on their computers for online classes instead of engaging with the world outside.

Economic concerns escalated during this time as businesses closed, families lost jobs, and many remained home to care for children. Unemployment benefits were so generous that some individuals did not return to work, resulting in missed opportunities. Consequently, Generation Z is more anxious about their financial futures compared to older siblings.

Climate change anxiety is a pressing concern for this generation, which deeply cares about the environment and its impact on future generations. Social justice issues, including racial equity, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender equality, are significant focus areas, driving activism and increasing stress. Identity exploration around gender, sexuality, and ethnicity also holds critical importance for many.

The threat of gun violence in schools, coupled with online spaces that facilitate dangerous connections, only heightens their fear and uncertainty. This generation grapples with academic pressures intensified by a “test-blind” college landscape, where parents are more aware of mental health concerns. Anxiety about various aspects of life, from driving to flying, is prevalent, and the push for high grades and standardized tests remains intense.

Generation Z is less inclined to opt-out of academic challenges, as everything related to education is predominantly online, regardless of potential emergencies or health crises. Cyberbullying and online safety risks reach unprecedented levels, creating an environment rife with concerns about harassment and privacy.

This is a generation that urgently needs skills to cope with disappointment and navigate a world filled with conflict while aspiring for peace. They perceive issues in shades of grey rather than black and white, and they require our support to achieve a brighter future and develop the social skills necessary for success.!

Prioritizing Your Well-Being as the Year Comes to a Close

2024 has been a year of extraordinary highs and challenging lows. From Taylor Swift becoming the first artist to achieve billionaire status solely from her music and concerts, to Ingenuity’s final mission to Mars sending back groundbreaking images, and the awe-inspiring total solar eclipse that united millions in wonder—it has certainly been a time of excitement. However, we’ve also faced immense challenges, from devastating hurricanes to a tightly contested election, leaving many anxious about the state of the world and potential global conflicts.

As the year draws to a close, it’s crucial to turn inward and prioritize our well-being, both mentally and emotionally. The stress of the holidays, combined with political uncertainty, can take a toll. So, how can we ensure we’re looking after ourselves as we step into the new year? Here are a few key reminders:

It’s okay to not be okay.

Allow yourself time to process emotions in ways that feel natural to you. Whether it's writing down your thoughts, talking them through with a trusted friend, or using creative outlets like painting or a Buddha board, expressing your feelings can bring relief when words fall short. Sometimes, even simple actions like taking a walk or changing your surroundings can shift your perspective and lighten your emotional load. It’s okay to say no.

Protecting your time and energy by setting boundaries is not only okay—it's essential. Don’t feel guilty for stepping back when you need to recharge. Overcommitting during this hectic season can leave you drained and disconnected from your own needs. Remember, self-care isn't selfish it's a priority. You’re not alone.

Reach out to your community when you need support, whether it’s reconnecting with friends, exploring a new hobby, or volunteering. If you're feeling overwhelmed, seeking help from a therapist can be a powerful step. Therapy provides a non-judgmental space to work through tough emotions and create a plan for moving forward.

As we move into the new year, let’s commit to being kind to ourselves. In the face of uncertainty and pressure, remember to breathe, reflect, and give yourself permission to rest. Each small act of self-care is a way of building resilience, and with that, we’ll be better equipped to embrace the opportunities and challenges of 2025 with clarity and strength.

Choosing My Own Adventure: The 2024 “Turkey Trot”

Ah, the Turkey Trot! That delightful annual tradition in Buffalo, NY, where folks gather to run an 8K that, quite frankly, sounds less like a race and more like a test of your sanity. You see, even if the temperature is less than ideal-think polar bear plunge level-nothing matters more than the camaraderie. And when I say "camaraderie," | mean the collective shivering of everyone who forgot to wear thermal socks.

As you encounter the festive parade of squirrels, turkeys, superheroes, villains, and a few questionable strippers (mostly males), the cold quickly becomes a secondary concern. Your body heats up a phenomenon that has little to do with exercise and everything to do with the fact that only the most "hottie" of hotties dare to run in freezing temperatures. At least, that's what I tell myself as I gasp for air, reading the signs from spectators and wondering where I left my dignity.

Water stations? Forget about it! They transform into beer stations because, hey, it's Buffalo! If you manage to forget breakfast or just don't have the time, never fear: donuts will literally fly your way from a nearby bridge! "Even if I'm running slow, I'll finish this 8K," I confidently thought

Spoiler alert: finishing is overrated.

Fast forward to crossing the finish line, I pat myself on the back and think, "Next year, I'll try harder!" The shuttle line back to my car is so long it feels like waiting for Black Friday deals. I'm eager to change out of my wet socks. Soaked by freezing rain, I wish I could magically teleport to my warm, dry living room. .

Dude Where’s My Car”

Once I finally board the shuttle, my mind drifts. "Did I park in Narnia?" I nervously wonder. "Maybe my car vanished into the Buffalo abyss." An hour later, I realize I haven't seen another runner. My phone battery is down to 10% as I keep walking. It can't be far, right? Wrong. My phone dies, plunging me into panic.

Alone with My Fear

Lost downtown in an unfamiliar area, I find myself asking strangers for directions. A bewildered young man gapes at me, as if I’m a three-headed turkey. "Help me, please!" I silently plead. Another figure appears—perhaps a knight in shining armor? Unfortunately, not. I approach a convenience store clerk who’s distracted by his phone. “Keep walking straight,” he replies. “Just a decent person, I hope,” I think while continuing my quest. Suddenly, another man shouts obscenities at me. I just keep walking.

Choosing My Own Adventure

I think having done this for years with someone else makes a difference.. I am not afraid of adventure but I may have underestimated my petite frame and my sense of direction.

The Thaw

After what feels like eternity, I’m exhausted and resemble a popsicle more than a person No money, no phone, and definitely no police car in sight. Then, like a beacon of hope, I spot it! A main road! I scream, “Yes, I made it!” I finally find my car and pledge to never complain about modern technology again. I am ultimately proud of myself!

The real takeaway from the Turkey Trot 2024? It’ s not just about running; it’s about the hilarity of life’s misadventures. If you find yourself lost and facing a day full of challenges, at least you’ll have a great story to tell!

Sports

it’s always that time of the year! Only in Western New York can it feel like a holiday before a holiday. Even before the wind begins to blow halloween candy wrappers away. As the pizza places stock up and the salt trucks are ready for the streets… The Buffalo Bills begin to compete! The feeling of living in a place (second) largest in the state) where most every single person roots for one team while eating wings on their plate is not one that you can replicate.

As we yell at the screens big and small, coaches and refs, through it all - anyone from Buffalo can tell you we don’t waver, through sleet, hail and blizzards we love the Bills and jack up our stadium seats so nobody will go without a second mortgage but this Mafia belongs to the Bills and We ARE the City of Good Neighbors.

Sports Coaching and Athletes

We all love sports and many of us coach and our kids play too.. due to the way sports has such an impact on our lives children as young as five start to become athletes. If we look back on last generation’s we can see the the emotional and physical aspects sports can have ( like anything else) on children, teens and coaches. Dehydration, injuries, proper nutrition, sleep and integration of styles. Our athletes have many reasons for wanting to be better, stronger and more than the person sitting next to them.. for some it’s a lifelong personal battle. In order to use that, reasearch has shown you must tread carefully. Every athlete is a human being. most aren’t getting ebdorsements. Your high school , college and pro athletes need more. So do your coaches. In all sports the pressure is high. I learned first hand the type of pressure athletes were under in college. I studied this as well. I’ve also Interviewed many. My work with some has also showed me that they too deserve places safe to vent and learn how to integrate their style. I think we’ve seen healthier responses in rescent years but I think it’s easy to look at a knock out pool with social emotional issues .its how I won mine! I think that is saying something! Get mentally tougher-

. Despite still having the pinched nerve. My only options are epidurals or fusion.

UPDATED BEFORE PUBLISHING****United Healthcare CEO Shooting

Despite still having a pinched nerve, my only options are epidurals or fusion.

As a child, I was fortunate not to break a bone, despite skiing weekly and playing tennis competitively. My aversion to gym class was so well-known that I once donated blood during class to avoid participation, despite my friends' fears of needles.

My first serious injury came in college from a car accident that resulted in whiplash and cervical spine issues. At 17, I didn't feel the full effects until years later. After becoming a mother, my neck problems worsened in my early 30s, leading me to seek treatments like epidurals and nerve blocks from Dr. Yadegar in Merrick, NY.

At 35, I noticed swelling in my ankle, which was later revealed to be three holes in the bone needing repair and cartilage regrowth. I underwent experimental treatments like PRP therapy and bone marrow extraction at HSS in New York City, none of which were covered. Following a long summer on crutches, I required further surgery due to tightened tendons from immobility.

Finding Dr. John Feder from Orlin & Cohen in Long Island brought me joy as I regained my mobility. However, I slipped on ice while assisting a student, resulting in my first broken bone. Healing from that injury revealed a disc issue in my lower back, aggravating my cervical issues from the earlier accident.

This began a challenging journey where, as my spine deteriorated, I needed more frequent injections until back surgery was required eight years later. After a laminectomy and microdiscectomy, I faced unexpected complications, including more lower back pain, leg pain, and a diagnosis of IBS linked to my medications and spine issues. Despite the small surgery, the four-inch incision was more significant than I anticipated. Even after developing further back and shoulder issues, I chose to avoid rushing into spinal fusion and consulted Dr. Yadegar for another epidural, hoping for relief.

My journey has exposed systemic healthcare issues, particularly after recent news regarding the United Healthcare CEO. The relationship between pain, mental health, and healthcare access is crucial. I do not believe violence is a solution to our healthcare challenges, yet navigating complex logistics for treatment has been frustrating, especially as my insurance isn’t accepted by many New York surgeons. The stress of new insurance policies and restrictions compounds the difficulties of accessing necessary care.

Despite these challenges, I remain committed to advocating for change. Healthcare should be accessible, and doctors deserve fair compensation without overcharging. Our struggles highlight the need for advocacy and awareness regarding pain management.

Throughout this journey, I’ve learned resilience, patience, and the importance of seeking help. While I live with pain and uncertainty, I hold on to hope for a better future. Healing comes from within, driven by my determination and advocacy, not by any single CEO.

Technology’s Fool

Technology’s Fool

Across the globe, many people hold diverse perspectives on technology. As I write on a digital platform and utilize online programs for service delivery, I recognize both the benefits and drawbacks of technology. In navigating the digital landscape, we often encounter both positive and negative experiences.

I’ve developed a mindset regarding technology: cell phones, laptops, and computers have enhanced the way we research, communicate, and operate in our daily lives. They make socializing, learning, and accessing care more engaging, especially in rural or urban areas, and offer interesting experiences for children. However, our dependence on these tools may turn us into the fools of our own creation.

Technology is now a cornerstone of our domestic and international financial, business, healthcare, and travel industries. As we approach 2025, it permeates every aspect of our lives, from entertainment to commerce. Yet, this reliance comes with significant risks. As technology evolves, so too do the methods to manipulate it. Security breaches and personal data leaks pose constant threats even with high-level security measures in place.

Moreover, technology remains imperfect. Spam emails, intrusive calls, and phishing attempts are rampant, raising ongoing concerns about privacy. In an era where communication is instantaneous, we often find ourselves overwhelmed and unable to protect our information effectively.

Additionally, social media platforms and chat rooms can lure young users especially pre-teens and teens into distressing situations, leading to dangerous encounters. The potential for negative consequences makes it imperative to prioritize online safety.

Amid these challenges, it is crucial to remain vigilant and informed. While technology can enhance our lives, we must not fall prey to it. Setting boundaries is key: designate tech-free times, engage in meaningful face-to-face interactions, and cultivate critical thinking skills.

By embracing technology thoughtfully, we can avoid becoming its fool. Let us harness the power of technology to enrich our lives, while remaining grounded and aware of its complexities. Only then can we navigate the digital age with confidence and intentionality.

Get Ready to Ring in the New Year with a New Outlook

As the year ends, it's the perfect time to reflect and reset. Instead of focusing solely on resolutions, consider adopting a fresh perspective for the new year.

First, celebrate your achievements from the past year. Acknowledging your successes, no matter how small, helps build confidence and motivation for what lies ahead.

Next, set positive intentions rather than strict resolutions. Focus on growth, self-care, and meaningful experiences. This approach encourages flexibility and openness to change.

Lastly, embrace opportunities for learning and connection. Whether through new hobbies, friendships, or professional growth, approach the year with curiosity and enthusiasm.

With a renewed outlook, you can welcome the new year with positivity and determination to create lasting change.

Happy New Year from InspireOn !

Bio: My name is Maryann Piazza, and I am an LCSW-R with over 30 years of experience in the field of mental health Through my work, I have discovered that traditional talk therapy alone has limitations when it comes to addressing our core beliefs, those deeply ingrained patterns that shape how we live. To truly change the course of our lives, we need to engage the mind, body, and spirit together.

The mind helps us consciously to desire change; the body holds onto pain and trauma that must be released; and our spiritual needs, unique to each individual, must also be honored. My approach integrates traditional psychotherapy and energy therapies with each person’s spiritual path to create a holistic healing process that addresses mind, body, and spirit.

I invite you to work with me on a path toward transformation to reimagine your life and create a foundation for happiness and joy. Maryann@transformtoawaken.com

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO ADDRESS HOLIDAY STRESS.

Understanding how the Mind, Body, and Spirit can be an effective way to reduce stress

Welcome to the holiday adventure In this season from now until after new year’s stress can be part of our daily experience We may have so many things on our list to address, people to see, family planning, managing households and dealing with our own expectations. These all add up in the stress category. How do we go about making sure that we slow things down, practice our best selves, and take care of ourselves, our families and our expectations? There are many ways to address this ongoing stress. The mind-body-spirit concept has been around for a long time; however, we may not utilize all the gifts each area has to offer to address stress.

How can we nurture this incredible mind-body-spirit system and get the most out of our life. When we understand the needs of the mind, the body, and spirit, we open doors to a more profound sense of well-being. Each of these dimensions plays a distinct yet interwoven role in our lives. The mind represents our conscious awareness and capacity for choice; the body is our vessel and the keeper of our experiences; and spirit embodies our unique understanding of something greater, often beyond words. This article breaks down each dimension, examining how they interact and the impact they have on our overall health

1 Mind: The Power of Conscious Choice and Planning

The mind is often seen as the center of our ability to make decisions, hold desires, and develop expectations It’s within the mind that we set intentions, plan our days, and cultivate our dreams. But beyond planning and logic, the mind also holds the keys to a fulfilling life. It guides us to seek joy, contentment, and meaning. When we consider questions like, “What are we doing today?” or “What is my purpose?” we’re tapping into the mind's potential to direct our lives toward joy.

Our desires, creative ideas and choices can create stress due to many factors. If we are trying to create or follow traditions we may feel “we have too much on our plate”. This in turn creates stress in not being able to achieve every desire or expectation. We use an internal state of judgement or negative self-talk which diminishes our joy, and we end up in a state of irritability or worse anxiety or depression. Inclusive with family, making new traditions, keeping a plan simple with expectations that are manageable. This can create a successful holiday. By fostering awareness and intentionality, we can shape our days into experiences that nourish and inspire us In essence, the mind, the body, and spirit are not isolated but interconnected By nurturing each of these dimensions, treating each area with intention and listening to ourselves, we can cultivate a more harmonious and fulfilling life. Embracing this balance invites us to a life of joy, resilience, and wholeness.

2. The Body: The Vessel and Messenger of Experience

The body serves as our physical vessel, a home for our spirit and mind, and a record-keeper of our life experiences. The body isequal to mind and spirit, but we tend to give it less importance in the management of our holistic self. The body can be seen as holding all the patterns of experiences in the subconscious state. We call these core beliefs. Our bodies record all the events we have experienced throughout our entire lives. This subconscious system created the rules we live by. If we experience an event that was a struggle for us the body remembers it to protect you from that experience again. This system can be great, but it also can cause undue stress because we may have learned to handle a conflict in the past in a way that may not be useful to us now as an adult. How do we listen to the body? Notice when you feel a headache, a stomachache, your breath becomes more rapid, or you feel uncomfortable and can’t put a name to it. These are all ways the body can let you know your alert system is on for some reason. Paying attention and acknowledging to yourself that something is off can be the beginning of understanding the wisdom in the body.

3. Spirit: A Unique Perspective for Every Individual

The concept of spirit is deeply personal and varies widely across individuals. For each person, the notion of spirit may mean something different if there are a thousand people, there might be a thousand interpretations of spirit. For some, spirit might be a connection to nature, for others a religious or spiritual framework, and for many, it may simply be a sense of interconnectedness with humanity. All of these perspectives are valid and contribute to a multifaceted view of spirit. In times of high stress, we lose sight of ourselves and how we fit in with our family and community. Embracing your approach to spirit can lead to a richer understanding, support for yourself in dealing with day-to-day activities and a deeperconnection to ourselve Accessing your personal beliefs provides a foundation of purpose and belonging.

ntegrating

the Mind Body Spirit

Our expectations of a holiday can create a split between our desires and the reality of the situation. Creating a path forward that uses the mind to create a realistic mindfulness approach can provide a fantastic holiday experience. If, for example, you are the sole planner you can change things up and ask for help. Set up a group chat to determine who can help and let others participate with their expertise. Focus on what is manageable and let go of what is not manageable .If our past experiences, particularly traumatic or challenging ones, have left imprints on the body, it influences how we handle stressful situations. Listening to the body alerts us to address an uncomfortable situation. An example would be regarding holiday planning. If we feel we can’t ask for help because an early experience in our lives indicated that it was unsafe to ask for help, we may have a very difficult time asking for help as an adult. However, in using your creative mind and setting an intention to change this core belief to a positive state “you have every right to ask for help”, can change the trajectory of your life. By understanding the messages the body is sending, we can intervene early and address underlying issues before they develop into more severe illnesses. This holistic approach allows us to intervene with ourselves as we experience stress responses. Listening with gentleness to ourselves, working on taking more rest, or viewing your expectations realistically you can develop a plan to enjoy the holiday and reduce stress. Developing a ritual of listening to your inner wisdom, whether through sitting quietly, meditation, prayer or sitting in nature, you can access your best self and integrate all areas of the mind body system to create a plan that can be inclusive with family, making new traditions, keeping a plan simple with expectations that are manageable. This can create a successful holiday. By fostering awareness and intentionality, we can shape our days into experiences that nourish and inspire us. in essence, the mind, the body, and spirit are not isolated but interconnected. By nurturing each of these dimensions, treating each area with intention and listening to ourselves, we can cultivate a more harmonious and fulfilling life. Embracing this balance invites us to a life of joy, resilience, and wholeness.

December Sanity for Moms / Parents

I have heard so many moms recently tell me that they don’t like December. I’ ve heard comments like : “I hate December ” • “It’ s all too much ” • “I can ’t wait until December is over “ My kids on the other hand are repeatedly telling me, “I can ’t wait until Hanukkah starts!” Oh, to be a child with little holiday responsibilities As you know, us moms are the magic makers We are the magic makers that make all these holidays special for our families I don’t know about you, but this magic maker is tired I haven’t even jumped into the 8 night Hanukkah marathon yet I can do it I can do it I repeatedly give myself pep talks if you didn’t know that. Whenever I feel stressed, it motivates me to figure out ways to do things differently and to think differently. I don’t know about you, but I want to enjoy the month of December. I know you are trying to fit in extra stuff into your already busy schedule. You are buying gifts, wrapping, baking, making lists, addressing cards….the list goes on and on. I laugh at the fact that I keep remembering people to buy gifts for, which brings me to the first way we are going to change things together. Making Changes

• We don’t have to buy gifts for everyone. I am talking to myself here. I LOVE that my friend is busy making cookies with her mom. I am watching dozen after dozens of cookies that she is posting on Facebook. What a perfect way to show a lot of people that you care about them. She will package it all up and hand it out to friends and family members. I know that you probably don’t want me to add baking to your to do list. My point is that we don’t have to spend a lot to make people feel special and everyone does not expect an expensive gift. Most people don’t expect a gift and if they do you don’t have to comply either.

• Discuss gifts with your family members and buy for less people. My friend told me there are so many of them that they draw names for kids and adults I love that! Don’t be shy Make a helpful suggestion Everyone wants to buy less My friend suggested that we do one white elephant gift card for our book club instead of buying everyone gifts this year I love buying them all gifts and being creative, but less work is not a bad thing!

•Just because you did a holiday tradition last year does not mean that you have to do it this year. My family laughs at me and tends to say things like, “Do we have to do this again?” Sometimes my answer is yes and sometimes my answer is no. Yes, you have to look at Christmas lights with me because I absolutely love them. Yes, you have to light the menorah with me every night. No, I don’t need to make homemade donuts if I don’t feel inspired to do this. My family is happy with Paula’ s delicious donuts. Last year I made an amazing challah menorah. That sounds fabulous and delicious but that doesn’t mean I have to do it again.

Sit down with your family and discuss what is important to everyone . If no one wants to make gingerbread houses together then take it off your list. If everyone is excited to go see the Nutcracker then go as a family. I took my girls to see the Nutcracker and it was magical. It was even more magical because our friends were in it. I love taking Ella every year and Lillie joined us this year and loved it too. This is a special tradition to keep as long as we enjoy it. My family never wants to go see Christmas lights so take it off your list if no one cares. I care so I make them go with me. Which brings me to the point

•Mom’ s matter

I mean this sincerely from the bottom of my heart What you want to do for the holidays and don’t want to do is important Don’t be shy! I tell mothers everywhere not to be shy with their requests I have learned over and over again that if I don’t ask for things that my family can ’t read my mind I asked my husband for jewelry (I usually do) It is important to me that we light the menorah and sing the blessings together every night of Hanukkah. What we want matters. You are important so don’t lose sight of yourself and::

Don’t forget to take care of yourself. This will reduce your stress! I realize that I get so busy that I forget my healthy diet and exercise. I am more inclined to grab unhealthy food when I’ m out shopping. I’ m more inclined to drink more coffee because I’ m tired. I may not make my exercise a priority because I am so busy getting my to do list accomplished. If we remember to drink water, exercise and eat healthy, then we feel less stressed in general. I always feel better after a long walk. I always feel better after a good healthy meal. I am starting to ask myself: “How are you going to feel after you eat that?” That question has helped me a lot!

•There is no set amount of gifts

My friend told me that she does four gifts for Hanukkah. One gift that her daughter wants, one gift to wear, one gift to read, one gift she needs. I almost fell off my chair when I read this. I am SO impressed with my friend. Do you know how many gifts I bought my kids? I don’t want to count them. If you are Jewish, you don’t have to give your kids a gift every night. Have a game night. Have a Hanukkah party. Have a give back night. If you are Christian, you don’t have to give your kids a ton of gifts for Christmas and Christmas Eve. You don’t have to fill the whole room with gifts. My friend is taking her family on vacation instead of doing gifts this year. That was my suggestion, but my kids looked at me like I had ten heads. I think we need to buy less. Maybe I will take my own advice next year!

• It’ s okay to say no to your child.

After a long list of gifts, my daughter Lillie came downstairs last night asking me if we could do some decorative things to her room for Hanukkah. Is she kidding me? Does she know how much I already spent on her. The answer is a big NO. It’ s okay to say no to anyone in your life. The sooner we learn this the better!

•Build in some down timer in your days. Don’t laugh at me when I write that Don’t tell me that you don’t have time for that I sat down to watch a tv show last night and I did not feel guilty about it Was there a list that I could be doing? Absolutely! However, I know that I need to build down time into my days to keep myself sane!

•Change your state to gratitude. Stress brings on more stress. Gratitude brings on more gratitude. It is very hard to continue your stressed out state if you are counting your blessings. I am so thankful for my family and our health and our ability to provide our children with a fun and meaningful holiday season. If you can ’t afford a lot, be easy on yourself. Our children need to understand finances. As they ask me for more things, I tell them that I have already spent enough. Our children need to learn that the holiday isn’t just about gifts. The meaning of the holidays isn’t about gifts at all. You do what you can afford and don’t feel badly about that for one second.

Less materialism!

How have the holidays become all about gifts? I was telling my husband that I don’t really remember gifts that my parents gave me. I remember celebrating Hanukkah and being together. Every year when I ask my kids what their favorite part of Hanukkah was, they never say the gifts. They usually say things like time together because it brings us together as a family for eight nights in a row. I’ m also finding that I would so much rather spend money on an experience vs. a thing. I do like that my kids now enjoy clothes and pajama gifts which feels more useful to me than all the toys Make special memories and teach your kids what the holidays are about The more pressure we put on materialism the more stressed out we

•Last and certainly not least, maybe you feel stressed because of your grief Maybe you wish you could skip the holidays so that you didn’t have to think about how much you miss someone. We could have a whole new conversation about grief during the holidays. First, always honor and respect your feelings. Allow yourself to feel sad. It’ s not only okay, Missing important people during the holiday season is natural. My advice would be to push yourself to celebrate the holidays for your family. Make a new tradition to honor whoever you are missing or maybe you can do a special tradition with your family that you used to do with your loved one. My grandma loved elephants, so I tend to buy elephants in honor of her. I have given my daughterselephant gifts and it makes me smile. Remember that your loved one would want you to enjoy the holidays as much as you can.

I feel so much better after writing all this and I hope that you feel a little better after reading this. I feel like I just took a lot of pressure off myself. It is like we impose these unrealistic high standards onto ourselves that we have trouble achieving. I do that on a daily basis but add the holidays into the mix and it’ s over the top. I’ m very motivated after writing this to feel better about this month. I am deep breathing as I type this. Take a big deep breath and take a step in the right direction towards less stress. Activities, Strategies and Helpful Coping Skills for the Holidays & the New Year!

Anticipatory Anxiety and Initial Worry at Events

As we encounter birthdays, engagements, weddings, graduations, holidays and many other milestones; gatherings can bring both joy and anxiety.

Some people find excitement, enjoyment and a sense of community in large celebrations. There are other people that can feel overwhelmed, anxious or even “frozen” by the prospect of socializing. This can be a lifelong issue or due to a recent change in their life. What people don’t realize is that the greatest hurdles are the anticipatory and initial anxieties. These occur weeks, days, hours before the event and during the first 10,20, to 60 minutes of your arrival.

The advantage of recognizing the above is that through understanding this, planning and the Nike “Just Do It“ method, jumping in can work! Anxiety can subside just by being in the environment and becoming more familiar with speaking to smaller groups of people at a time. People are surprised at just how much better they feel.

Steps to Celebrating and Decreasing Anxiety

To really feel confident attending events

1. See or visualize yourself there (positively)

2. Visualize yourself with whoever you will be going with and share your concerns with them.

3. Think about the positive : get to know neighbor or acquaintance better … think about speaking with people on a smaller scale at the party is not public speaking.

4. Don’t consume alcohol or engage in use of other substances as they can cause depression, anxiety, and lead to different feelings or reactions than you may normally have.. or your ability to manage your anxiety differently.

5. The same is true of food and non alcoholic drinks. Try to enjoy but eat as healthy as possible. Eating too much sugar or consuming too much caffeine can lead to a change in how you feel. Try not to sabotage a good mood by ingesting food or drink that makes you jittery. Everyone’s body metabolizes sugar, caffeine, and alcohol differently and many people find that these impact their mood.

6. ENJOY…when engaging with people. We start to relax and see that we can be a part of this new type of setting with friends and family.

7. ALLOW the experience to foster a more positive mood.

The Success

A positive experience leads to MORE opportunities which makes people become pro ‘s at socializing and celebrating!

It is only a matter of time before people see that celebrations can lighten their mood and lead to a happier life –M. Abramsky, LCSW. Reach out for more support at https:// www.inspireamind.net
