FromOkinawatoOakland:ALifeShapedby Movement

Alice'sparentsimmigratedfromOkinawa,Japan,arriving intheUnitedStatesjustmonthsbeforeshewasborn.When sheturnedfive,thefamilyrelocatedtosouthernLouisiana, whereshegrewupastheeldestoffourchildren.Fromearly on,shemovedtothebeatofherowndrum.Atseven,she declaredshewantedtobecomeanactress.Atthirteen,she auditionedatalocalcommunitytheatreandearnedtherole ofLucyinthemusical Snoopy.Itwasasmallstage,butit confirmedherpassionfortheatre.

Byhighschool,shehadchanneledthatsameenergyinto thespeechteam,competingnearlyeveryweekend.Asa sophomore,shebeganwinningregionalcompetitionsin dramaticinterpretationandpoetry,andearnedadmissionto TheLouisianaSchoolforMath,ScienceandtheArts,one ofthefewpublicresidentialschoolsintheUnitedStates. Sheenrolledasajunior,majoredintheatre,andinhervery firstyearwascastastheleadin The Madwoman of Chaillot.

ShewentontoMiamiUniversity,majoringinacting,andin hersenioryearenrolledinastudy-abroadprogramin Czechoslovakia,immersingherselfintheatrehistoryand theCzechlanguage.Whentheprogramended,shestayedto teachEnglishfortwoadditionalyears,deepeningherlove forcross-culturalcommunication.Whileshewasteaching CzechstudentsEnglish,sheherselfbecamefluentinthe Czechlanguage.Shelaterpursuedgraduatestudiesin directinginHonolulubeforerelocatingtotheSanFrancisco BayArea,theregionthatwouldbecomethehomeofher mostconsequentialwork."Peace is not only something negotiated between nations; it is something we practice in our everyday interactions,"shenotes.Thoseyearsof crossingborders,cultures,andlanguageswerequietly buildingthefoundationforexactlythat.

Beforebuildingthepractice,sheleadstoday,Alicespent nearlyadecadeasagraphicdesignerattheAmericanRed Cross.Aftersteppingawayfromdesign,shedroveparttimeforLyftwhilereconsideringherdirection.Thepivot arrivedunexpectedly.Whilesearchingforaschoolforher children,shecameacrossastart-upschoolinSan Francisco.Sheappliedforherkidstoattend.Notonlydid sheenrollherkidsthere,sheendedupgettingajobofferas well.ShespentthenextthreeyearsintheSanFrancisco start-upworld,sharpeningherinstinctsforstrategyand relationship-building.Whenthatroleended,itwasher partnerwhoredirectedherattention,observingthatshehad arareandconsistenttalentformediatingdisputes.

Untilthatconversation,Alicehadassumedmediationwasthe exclusivedomainoflawyers.Aquicksearchprovedotherwise. "I got certified for both mediation and arbitration and started my business," sherecalls.Severalyearsin,sheexpandedtoinclude negotiationcoaching,andtheShikinaNegotiationAcademywas born."Iliketothinkofmycontributionasbringingmorepeaceto theworld,oneconflictatatime,"shesays,andcomingfromAlice Shikina,itsoundslesslikeamissionstatementandmorelikea deeplypersonalintention.
