Your Legacy Honour your Past by Inspiring our Future

As President of The King Alfred School Society, I have been deeply appreciative of every gift we have received. The King Alfred School has been built on fundraising since its beginning; from the gifts that enabled the purchase of our special Manor Wood Estate in 1919, to the redevelopment of the Phoenix Theatre in Ivy Wood in 2018. With the generous support of Old Alfredians and parents, the School has grown and evolved while always retaining the core values of its Founders.
As we look to the future, we ask you to consider remembering the School in your Will. Your legacy will help protect the independence of KAS and ensure that the School continues to innovate and push the educational boundaries for future Alfredians. It will lay the foundation for the future of KAS, providing much-needed legacy support to preserve the bold vision of our Founders and the School’s ethos, keeping those principles relevant for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Construction of the Main Hall began in December 1925. Parents and members of our KAS community worked together to pay off the loan used to build this hall, which continues to be a vital space at The King Alfred School. Through fêtes, plays, lettings and recitals by worldfamous pianist and Old Alfredian, Solomon Cutner (OA 1920), the KAS community helped fund the Main Hall construction, which was completed in 1927.
The window of the Main Hall’s front door featured beautiful ultraviolet glass as a memorial to Dr Ethelberta Claremont (OA 1910), an Old Alfredian whose untimely death to Typhoid fever shocked the KAS community. Today, the Hall remains largely unchanged and plays a pivotal role in School life, hosting daily mealtimes and seasonal performances.
The King Alfred School community’s spirit of giving endures, as shown by the gifts received for the renovation of the Lower Court. Parents and staff raised £50,000 to completely refurbish the Lower Court, installing a new, multipurpose AstroTurf surface, backboards, goals, boot scrapers, new drainage, and a wider entrance for maintenance of the court. It is used daily and throughout the year for various sports.

“Leaving

a legacy in my Will is my way of saying thank you to those organisations that had a transformational impact on my life. Giving back to KAS, I hope, will ensure that the School’s unique education is protected for future generations of young Alfredians.”

OA 1956, Director General of The Country Landowners’ Association and former Civil Servant at The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
Julian credited KAS with giving him a ‘joy of learning’. During his time at KAS he learned how to think laterally, express himself, and argue his case, all qualities that were deeply influential in his life.
He was a pupil at The King Alfred School from 1945 to 1956. An editor of the School magazine, he also opened the batting for the KAS cricket team, played hockey and tennis, and was a key member of the School orchestra, where he played his beloved violin. Clearly a talented all rounder, Julian won a place at Wadham College, Oxford University to study Chemistry, later switching to Geography.
When he passed away, Julian left a Legacy gift for The King Alfred School, in recognition that his education had the most transformational impact on his life. Julian committed to support the School for future generations and his legacy ensures his connection with The King Alfred School will continue for many years to come.
