Onlyfouryearsaftertheviruswasdiscoveredandofficiallyclassified,WorldAIDSDaywasfirstobservedin1988.It servedasaforumtohonortheliveslosttothepandemicandtoincreasepublicawarenessofHIVandAIDS.

Theoriginsofthissignbeganin1988whenartprofessionalsfoundedagroupcalledVisualAIDSinresponsetothe adverseimpactofAIDSontheartsworldandasawayforartinstitutionsandaudiencestotakedirectactionagainstthe disease.

AgroupofVisualAIDSartistscollaboratedtocreateavisualsymbolin1991honoringHIV/AIDS.Theyellowribbons representingAmericansoldiersservingintheGulfWarservedasinspiration.

Theredribbonwaschosenbyartists.Red’s“connectiontobloodandtheideaofpassion—notonlyangerbutlovelikea valentine”iswhyitwaschosen.

Redwasselectedbecauseitisastrikingandconspicuouscolorthatsymbolizespassion,heart,andlove.Redisthemost appropriatecolortochoosebecauseAIDSisprimarilyspreadthroughblood.

However,becauseoftheirstrongassociationswiththegaycommunity,pinkandrainbowwerepurposefullyavoided.The artistswantedtoshowthatHIVwasnotjustaproblemforgaypeople;itaffectedeveryone.

Theribbon’sstraightforwarddesignwasselectedduetoitseaseofcreationandreplication.Theartistsintendedfortheir emblemtobe“aconsciousness-raisingsymbol,notasacommercialortrademarktool,”hencetheywantedtomakesure itwasfreeofcopyright.

Thefoundersoftheprojectsay,‘TheRedRibbonProject’wasthetitlethatwasassignedtotheproject.
