HISTORYOFUNIVERSALCHILDREN’SDAY

TheDeclarationoftheRightsoftheChild,whichwasselectedin1959andliststhebasicfreedomsthatallchildrenshould havesuchastherighttolife,educationandplay,ledtothefirstrecognitionofthedayTheworldwidecommitmentto children’srightscontinuedtogrowin1989withtheintroductionoftheUnitedNationsConventionontheRightsofthe Child(CRC).

ORIGINANDPURPOSE

UniversalChildren’sDaycoincideswithtwosignificantmilestonesinthehistoryofchildrights.OnNovember20,1959, theUNGeneralAssemblyadoptedtheDeclarationoftheRightsoftheChild,apivotaldocumentrecognizingthe fundamentalrightsofchildren.Later,in1989,theConventionontheRightsoftheChild(CRC)wasadoptedonthesame date,settinganinternationallybindingframeworkforchildprotection,education,andequality

ManycountrieshavecelebratedChildren’sDayindifferentwaysoverthecourseofmorethanacenturyThesecond SundayinJunewasdesignatedasadayforchildrenin1857byAmericanpreacherDr.CharlesLeonard.Hecalledit RoseDayatfirst.Eventually,thedaywasrenamedChildren’sDay,anditisobservedonApril23.

In1920,TurkeymadeChildren’sDayanationalholiday,andithasstayedthatwayeversince.In1949,intheSoviet Union(thenRussia),theWomen’sInternationalDemocraticFederationdeclaredJune1sttobetheInternationalDayfor ProtectionofChildren.

ThepresentdayideaofUniversalChildren’sDayhasbeganin1925duringtheWorldConferenceofChildWelfarein Geneva,Switzerland.However,itwasn’trecognizedgloballyuntil1954,whentheUKurgedothernationstostartadayto promotesympathybetweenkidsandtakestepstoimprovechildwelfareworldwide.

Finallyin1959,thedateofUniversalChildren’sDaywasestablished.OnNovember20th,theDeclarationoftheRightsof theChildwasadoptedbytheUNGeneralAssembly.InternationalcelebrationsofUniversalChildren’sDayhavebeen heldeversincetoadvancechildwelfare.

InSeptember2015,worldleadersadoptedthenewSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs),pledgingtoeradicate povertyby2030.However,untilthereisagreatereffortSforit.Approximately52millionchildrencouldpassawaybefore turningfivebetween2019and2030.ThelikelihoodofakiddyingbeforeturningfiveissixteentimeshigherinsubSaharanAfricathaninhigh-incomenations.Insub-SaharanAfrica,nineoutoftenchildrenwillliveinterriblepoverty Morethan60millionelementaryschool-agedyoungsterswillnotbeattendingclasses,whichisalmostthesameamount astoday.OverhalfwillcomefromAfrica’ssub-Saharanregion.Beforetheageof18,about150millionmoregirlswillget marriedby2030.
