Dans de beaux draps! In a tangle! Sabine Durand,

A

s you make your bed, so you must lie in it... In the luxury sector, it is of course a tangle of light, voluptuous silk sheets, into which sensitive people slip, while millions of others can only dream of it. It's a story about sleepwalking, because these famous sheets, which brands wish to be ever more sparkling and fine, cool as the temperature rises, warm when it drops; they contribute to good sleep and ease waking, they protect and repair the skin, they satisfy, or better yet, they anticipate the

desires of the happy few with surprising words, shimmering colours, and stunning effects, which should cost ever less. No matter that suppliers are obliged to go to the ends of the earth to find mulberry silkworms or the perfect spider. They are faced with a lose-lose choice – how to respect these little invertebrates to obtain labels that go well, whilst boosting their silk glands to achieve the required levels of productivity... That the satisfaction of their clients requires them to acquire ever more subtle knowhow, to invest in more sophisticated and thus more expensive weaving machines, to be ever in search of technical and stylistic innovation... and their invoices have to be lowered. So be it! In the short term, it is good for the profitability of some, and more painful for others. And what about the medium term? While the fabric retains all its qualities, its manufacturers choke, trim back, and finally retire to their beds. Probably no silks sheets for them…

MARCHÉ CHINOIS – CHINESE MARKET

> 10

• Chinese brands are seeking suppliers to support their move

upmarket. • Facing them are European manufacturers and designers, but also local manufacturers focussing on R&D.

t its inception seven years ago, Luxe Pack Shanghai hosted just thirty exhibitors. It has to be said that the luxury sector, still in its infancy, was only then getting into its stride. No local brands had yet emerged and large groups often limited themselves to locally producing products developed for Western consumers. Certainly, Dolce & Gabbana, Yves

Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton had already set up shop, but they barely stepped out beyond the prestigious Yanan Lu. Today, a simple walk around the city is enough to understand the rapid and profound implantation of the luxury sector in Chinese society. Famous brands crisscross in the space, while here and there local brands are appearing, determined to no longer be dictated to from the

West about the art of perfume or makeup... in a nutshell, consuming. And in the aisles of the trade fair, which has now set up home in the vast and majestic exhibition centre, the change is still palpable. Most numerous (130), Chinese exhibitors are now showcasing not only their productive force, but also their ability to innovate. “This market is undoubtedly reaching maturity.

Outsourcers have profes-sionalised and are now looking to deploy ambitious branding strategies,” says Christophe Pradère, CEO of BETC Design; an expert connoisseur of this country, since 2010 he has been structuring the services of his agency. “We support these changes with a hybrid approach, completely Franco-Chinese. In this city we have exclusively Chinese staff trained in Paris or French

who speak Chinese perfectly,” he says. The objective: not miss out on the gigantic potential that this country has in store for those companies who know how to take root there. In the process of becoming the leading luxury market worldwide in the next ten years, by 2020, 44% of worldwide sales of luxury goods and 50% of global growth (source: Ubifrance). p Éloïse Cohen

While Gainerie 91 now includes six companies, it is on Easybox, based in Shunde, that Haefelin Arnaud, their CEO, is focussing in order to continue their expansion in the Chinese market.

They are no longer limited to just copying, but they also want to build their own history along with their brand codes and DNA. This is why we have set up a design workshop within Easybox. This skill adds to the strength of the Shundebased production company with 250 employees, and its multimaterial approach. Introduced in 2013 with the creation of Easy Metal, metal joined wood, plastics and our expertise in techniques for transformation and finishing. In order to meet the expectations for packaging and display of luxury brands in spirits, jewellery and watch-making, we have become serial integrators of exper-

tise. It was this logic that led, after my purchase of Gainerie 91 in 2001, to the creation in 2002 of Covertech in Mauritius, our acquisition eight years later of the living heritage company Sejac based in the Jura, and then in 2013 the establishment in Fribourg (Switzerland) of Packing 91. With regard to China, our goal is that EasyBox will make in the short term 20% of its revenues directly with local brands. And thanks to our Chinese production - French design tandem, making for the best of both worlds, it is perfectly do-able. Because while we already make over 10% in this segment every year, we will are going to strengthen our Chinese speaking sales team. In addition, our position as “manufacturer” gives us a serious advantage over sourcing specialists who themselves are seeing the price of production, raw materials and labour skyrocketing.” p

In 2013, we were very reluctant to exhibit at Luxe Pack Shanghai. This step, we have taken this year. Because it’s important to remember that when addressing a market as complex as China it is not only a question of attracting trade show visitors, it’s also necessary to be locally structured in terms of consulting, follow up and commercial prospects. Our production has been located in China for twelve years now; however, logistical constraints for guaran-

teeing volumes for outsourcing should not be underestimated, especially as our product range is very wide and includes numerous features. Consultation, whether in the choice of materials or in terms of technical limitations, is therefore essential. And so three years ago we started training our Chinese employees in the monitoring of production and logistics. Meanwhile, we have adapted our Canton and Dongguan sites to meet these challenges. And finally, to optimise the storage and delivery of our products, which are very bulky, we have developed an effective network of partners.” p

“Last year, with our first participation at Luxe Pack Shanghai, I identified two types of visitors: the first group, sent by the major groups, were looking for bi-sourcing, i.e. Chinese manufacturers or companies with local production sites. The second group were new local perfume brands who were seeking to differentiate themselves via French production. We had a great many meeting which we will consolidate upon this year… because tackling the Chinese market is a long term process which inevitably requires time. Meanwhile, we are looking for a distributor or industrial partners offering full-service; indeed, what we need, like our bottle making activity, is a local partner for bottling. ” p

QUI PROPOSE QUOI À SHANGHAI ? - WHO OFFERS WHAT IN SHANGHAI ?

we exceeded 3,800 visitors,” says Nathalie Grosdidier, commissioner general of the exhibition. And a notable fact: alongside the familiar managers of Western brands based in China, local brands were present en masse at the trade fair. Their goal: to seek innovation, the sine qua non of their move upmarket, as sought after as it is essential.

“For their part, exhibitors were obviously very pleased with the contacts they made and the orders they took during these two days,” says Nathalie Grosdidier. Even more so since all of them are now commercially and industrially organised to respond to the needs of this market whose promises are equal to its complexity. p

n Shanghai, Yanan Lu is not a street like any other. One majestic and sumptuous shop window is followed by the next, including the likes of Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent and Burberry. And the headquarters of the largest global brands have also been established there. As a hub of luxury, it is therefore logical that this was where Luxe Pack held its 7th event. On Wednesday the 16th and Thursday the 17th of April, 130 exhibitors, 70% of them Chinese, unveiled their latest products to a growing number of buyers. “With exceptional growth of 24%, according to our preliminary figures

The environmental benefits of bamboo are proven. Undemanding in terms of water, requiring neither pesticides nor herbicides for growing, it has a rate very high rate of return. Maturing in less than 10 years, bamboo regenerates by one-third every year. And with an absorption rate of 99%, it is the plant which produces the most oxygen per square metre; qualities which, with regard to China, have an added heritage as well as historical dimension. The Great Wall

Les céramiques, au pied du mur The Great Wall of Ceramics

The Japanese company Daisho Glass is faithful to tradition. The company has thus made a speciality of white opaque sake glass. “We reproduce the appearance, texture, shine and strength of ceramic, with all the benefits of glass, notably in terms of manufacture,” says Toru Kashioka, of product planning. In terms of decoration, along with screen printing and hot stamping there is also a 3D printing technology, Clinker products. “Here, there is no need to produce in-mould engraving. We simply use a standard product to create visual and tactile differentiation,” says Judy Wu, marketing director of Euro Cosmetic Asia, the exclusive distributor for China. Meanwhile, to help brands create coherent lines, the manufacturer has duplicated all of its glass models in plastic; products which can be decorated with Inner Relief, an internal engraving process. p

For its first participation in Luxe Pack Shanghai, The Great Wall showcased its expertise in ceramics. Proven over the last five years, it allows the Chinese manufacturer, based in the province of Canton (Guangzhou), to provide a wide range of forms, coupled with a variety of finishes. As well as screen printing, there is also manual and automatic lacquering. “This material has many advantages, particularly in terms of customisation, but only that: it also has a soft and warm feel, whilst being cheap and easy to transform,” says Albert Xu, their marketing director. p

For the first time since its inception, 7 years ago, Luxe Pack Shanghai, the

luxury packaging trade show, April 16th, awarded the most environmentally friendly industrial products. It was an event which revealed the growing importance for Asian professionals of the issues of sustainable development. And James Cropper won an award: after re-using old coffee cups in its papers, the British company has now moved on to using the cacao skins of the Belgian roaster Barry Callebaut, by mixing them with FSC fibres. The fruit of this marriage is a brown paper, whose mechanical properties are equal to those of pure cellulose, and suitable for the entire range of decorations on offer (screen printing, hot stamping, embossing, and mass colouring). “Except for those companies who wish to keep this rather rustic colour,” says their commercial director, Chris Brown. And while for now, the proportion of waste used does not exceed 12%, the two manufacturers make no secret

“Sauf

of their intention to increase this proportion. And it has to be said that the source is far from being exhausted: every year, 3.5 million tonnes of cacao skins are produced. To support the commercialisation of this product, as well as its entire catalogue, James Cropper has established a sales office in Guangzhou, led by Christine Lu. “These initiatives are aimed at strengthening the implementation of our made-in-Britain papers, not only in China but also throughout the Asia,” says Mark Cropper, their president. p

Recyclable, as it is made entirely of polypropylene, this product, distributed exclusively by Euro Cosmetic Asia for the Chinese market, requires 40-45% less material than acrylic pots. “The over-moulding of the label in the double wall is a very simple and quick process which allows for a wide variety of decorations.

The Chinese company Ningbo Rainbow International is now offering it in the form of a pot. Along with its visual appearance there is also a textile dimension, while in terms of manufacture, the emphasis is on large runs for this technique which remains artisanal. p

In 2012 CHÂTEAU ANGELUS was consecrated as Premier Grand Cru Classé “A”. To celebrate this distinction, the Saint-Emilion winery has produced a bottle whose paper label has been replaced by gold embossed printing. Following the success of I love Chablis, the WILLIAM FÈVRE estate is launching a new limited edition, decorated with a sleeve. Their Chablis Hipster Collection is, like its predecessor, decorated with UV ink. The design is inspired by the American hipster trend, independent thinking, progressive, creative and offbeat. Also on the sleeve there are two innovations compared to last year: A QR code allows access to a 360° animation position and a transparent window on the back of the bottle allows you to see the level of the wine.

GIFFARD has taken the opportunity of the World Cup in Brazil to promote its brand of cachaça in France and Germany. The spirits group dressed their Thoquino for the occasion in a collectors’ label with the colours of the Latin American giant: green and yellow, of course, but also blue, in the form of scrolls symbolising the feathers of dancers and the lush vegetation of the Amazon. It is a graphic design also seen on the cachaça BIB and the Thoquino capirinha.

• J&B turned to a tattoo artist to decorate bottles covered with a latex skin.

3MATERIAL. The bottle is covered with a thick skin latex material which is used by tattoo artists to train. It is a first in the world of spirits.

3TECHNIQUE.

3TECHNICAL. The artist used his usual equipment. The cylindrical shape and the small size of the bottle however forced him to adapt his technique. Special supports were made to avoid cutting too deeply into the skin.

3DESSIN.

n the ultra-competitive world of whiskies, brands are competing with innovations in order to attract the spotlight to them. The London based J&B, the third largest brand worldwide behind Johnnie Walker and Ballantine’s is accustomed to limited editions, decorated with sleeves. The brand, owned by the world’s leading spirit maker Diageo has made a big splash once again by launching a series of 25 bottles decorated one by one by a professional tattoo artist. In an explosion of colour and fine ornamental designs, this Limited Edition Tattoo by Sphinx is a work of art in itself. p Ophélie Colas des Francs

It was to the French Sébastien Mathieu, from the schools of Fine Arts and the co-founder of the Sphinx, a private tattoo parlour located in the 11th arrondissement of Paris to whom J&B assigned the task of tattooing their bottles. “Even if the contour of the design is printed onto carbon paper and then transferred onto the skin, the offset, inevitable from one bottle to another, means that every piece is unique,” say the artist.

ine years after its creation, why offer an Extraordinary to Alien Water? Since 2005 Alien has made its mark, which alongside Angel represents a second strong pillar of growth for Clarins Fragrance Group. While remaining true to the DNA of this franchise, we are enriching it with a complementary, authentic and clear story. Hence this fragrance, combining a sunny bouquet of citrus and flowers with the Alien signature of white amber and Cashmeran wood. It’s almost as if the original materials have ripened in the sun, augmenting their benefits. More generous than the original fragrance, designed for IFF by Dominique Ropion and Véronique Nyberg, it is still less segmenting. It will thus enable us to reach a wider audience, particularly among the younger age bracket than the 25 to 35 year old target of Alien.

In terms of packaging, you have nonetheless given it a very strong visual code: amethyst. Why is that? We have indeed, making the choice of a transparent bottle to magnify the golden champagne colour of the fragrance. And this is to emphasise our story: that of the awakening of the Alien goddess in the sunlight, like a rebirth by the sun. In the same vein, the collar, made by Augros, has swapped gilding of for the original colour of the Surlyn. Moreover, while we have remained true to the bottles of the range and their inspiration of stones and crystals, we have substantially modified the design, notably by focussing on the Marquise style, born from the love of King Louis XV for his favourite, Madame de Pompadour. Because, thanks to this technique of cutting in glass in 56 facets, it appears to light up with tiny charming smiles. Along with the aesthetic aspect there is also an added practical dimension, with the bottle being more ergonomic and soft to grip. However, in terms of the case, we stayed with the original line: the paper is identical, as is the golden border and violet logo of the facing, the photo of the bottle on the back and the embossed sides. For the latter, in the interests of lightness, only a few logos have been hot stamped.

For now, however, the Source can only accommodate four fragrances: Angel l’Eau de toilette and the l’Eau de parfum, Alien l’Eau de parfum and Womanity. It was not designed for substituting one for another. Is the original criterion decisive in the choice of your suppliers? What we look for, first and foremost, is to offer our consumers the highest quality, most beautiful and most dependable product. Even more so as most of our products are refill-able, so they are intended to be used for a very long time. While Angel and Alien are bestsellers in perfumery, Womanity seems to be lagging behind somewhat. Do you plan to keep it? Womanity is certainly not seeing the same performance as its predecessors. This is the risk of these segmenting fragrances with their strong characters... Sometimes they have difficulty gaining traction. However, not only are we keeping it, but we are keeping the same approach, that of creating olfactory segments, with their own particular languages and bottles which always make an impression! p Interview by Éloïse Cohen

What technical challenges did the bottle bring? Just like our fragrance, we wanted our bottles to be generous, thus this lovely weight, and elegant thick base. Attributes which, combined with the large amount of faceting, are liable to create undulations on the glass skin. Verreries Brosse had to be especially vigilant about this point. Will Alien Eau Extraordinaire be available at the Source? Certainly, as the Source is an integral part of Thierry Mugler Parfums. And while it is a showcase of our environmental commitment, it also represents over a third of our turnover; even more so as it is a very effective customer-retention tool!

Thierry Mugler

Toly has taken the opportunity of Luxe Pack New York to present several innovations in makeup. For loose powders, the company has designed a range of SAN pots, equipped with a nylon mesh. “Thanks to its flexibility, there is no need to keep turning over the pot in every direction to allow for application,” says Franck de Vleeschouwer, their commercial director. Available in 10, 20 and 100 ml sizes, two other capacities (3 and 5 ml) for eye-shadow will soon be on offer. Another new product is the Air Cushion Compact, a case with a sealed polypropylene refill and an NBR sponge soaked with foundation. “The interest is that it packages a liquid formula in a compact,” says their sales manager. Finally, the Maltese company is showcasing its Tubairless, developed by the French company Pump’Art System, which it is the business partner. “The specificity of this airless package is in its filling, which is done via the neck like a tubular bottle. We have thus developed a tube with a wide neck to accelerate filling speeds, as well as several applicators which capitalise on the advantages in delivery, application and protection of airless packaging,” says Franck de Vleeschouwer. p

The inspiration of this bottle, wooden battening, is translated onto the glass; on the outside, grooves on the shoulders allow for stop potential drops of wine from falling, and reproduced on the interior they hold back the dregs of the bottle. And the sandblasted base evokes water or ice buckets, or condensation on glass walls. For lovers of cognac, goldsmith work on materials, echoing the amber drops flowing from trees, with fluid shapes, and slender leaves; an exercise in style and mastery of glass for this bottle topped with a chrome finish stopper. 3LA CONSERVE VINTAGE (3). 3LA CONSERVE VINTAGE (3). Our grandmothers’ conserves, revisited by a glass body, and available in three formats; the matt metalized coloured base coordinates with the colour of the lid, making for an elegant return of the home-made. 3LA BELLE BLANCHE (4).

3LA BELLE BLANCHE (4). Retro shape, soft angles... inspired by the milk bottles of yesteryear, this mass dyed white glass bottle is originally intended for pure fruit juice which it protects from light. A unique format, which comes in several varieties, identifiable by a set of covers and coloured labels. This other reinterpretation of the milk bottle, with a liquid appearing to be suspended thanks to the exploitation of the interior glass, is the favourite pick of the contest overseer, Ionna Vautrin. 3CREAMIX (6). 3CREAMIX (6). With the aim of modernising crème de fruits, Creamix is actually composed of four symmetrical bottles, each with a spout, and held in place between themselves thanks to a stopper and a polymer band at the bottom. It is a product which particularly impressed the jury, which chose it as its favourite pick. 3ATABLE (7). 3ATABLE (7). A square bowl with rounded shapes, with a double function cover - it provides the hermetic seal necessary for the preservation of food, and also serves as a base to showcase the contents by fitting into a hollow at the bottom of the bowl - Atable won the public prize.

DR

his year, you will be celebrating your 50th anniversary at Virojanglor. How has the company evolved since the start? Jean-David Curiel : It all started in 1963 in a small Parisian chemist when my father and his parents became registered exclusive agents for Britishmade metal tableware and objects. Bread bins, biscuit boxes, sugar containers… These objects would make up our core activity for 30 years. After that, when I came back to the company in 1995, I set up a new department for upscale promotional packaging. We had just acquired one of our Italian suppliers who were approaching bankruptcy. It was at this moment that I noticed how a coffee box had the ideal dimensions to enclose a bottle of Chivas. All that was left to do was to add a cover and refine the design. I therefore forged commercial relations with this brand and rapidly did the

same with the major luxury product providers such as Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Rémy Cointreau, Puig and LVMH. Today, I can tell you that we provide 80% of metallic containers for the luxury market. How would you define your company today? What sets you apart from the competition? J.-D. C. : Our company is based on a single industrial model focused on upscale luxury products and promotional operations. Our whole organization strives for turnkey solutions, innovation as well as unique selling propositions for our customers and also to guarantee that all deadlines are completely respected with permanent economic competitiveness. This is achieved using state of the art tooling not only in terms of technical capacity

(quality and innovation) but also in terms of production volumes. Our sites in Italy and China can produce 10 million metal containers per year. You invest 7.2% of your turnover in innovation. Please tell how this proactive strategy has paid its dividends recently. J.-D. C. : Return on investment has been achieved by associating materials that appear incompatible at first glance and adapting technology to other segments… All of our R&D efforts strive to create unseen forms, finishing and results that we have patented. We must keep ourselves years ahead of the rest by continually pushing the technical and mechanical limits of metal. At Luxe Pack in Monaco, we will present two novel features: The metal mirror which quality is similar to galvanized metal and declination on the metal finishing processes previously reserved for other media. For Johnny Walker, we invented the stepped container. Also with Hennessy, we opened a new era for metals with the mounted enclosure which has a process requiring more than 27 steps. Also with Hennessy, we discovered a new approach for the mounted enclosure within the scope of the XO EC7 project. R Vous

R dard requirements. We encountered multiple difficulties, mainly due to problems with micrometerscale precision that was needed for assembly or even problems due to off-scale dimensions when compared to standard 3L formats. Of course, we had to buy or even create a new generation of machines, double our use of tooling use capacity… But with the potential capabilities and commercial gains from the more accurate and powerful pressing machines, we could not turn down such an opportunity. The end result is not just simple promotional packaging but more an object of splendor, visually captivating and categorized as a luxury item due to the inherent qualities of metal in terms of perceived value, authenticity, feel, rigidity and weight. At a concavity of 15 mm from the faces, an assembly is made up of three complex parts, namely, a diamond-pointed embosser, a pressure-controlled locking system and rolls with refined staples that make the three parts appear as one part. You congratulate yourselves on creating the box with sharp edges, flush covers including a double layer or even staple boxes that are vertically deformed. Where else is it possible to further innovate with metal containers? J.-D. C. : Further innovation is possible by exploiting the vast potential representing this new family of materials and containers. Also, further innovation is possible by further sophisticating our nonconventional embossing techniques from developing predictive simulations of constrained deformations. There, it consists of again using our ultra-modern pressing ma-chines obtaining very deep embossing and reducing bends and “burnt corners”. Simulations can further conserve high definition of textures and details from zones of high deformation. Finally, innovation is also found through the development of the metal accessory segment.

What is your CSR policy? This is an aspect that Virojanglor is greatly attached to. We have recently brought in a specialized RSE manager. As well as a stringent ethical charter, we have put our own audits in place to combine the transparence of information and confidentiality of our audits for our own clients. The charters for Intertek, SGS Inspection, Sedex and Ecovadis are regularly updated. We strive for impeccable social engagement: Despite our small size, we must encourage our most demanding clients down this route. You have just launched a new showroom. What are the main features? J.-D. C. : This 250 m2 showroom holds some of our 3000 references, our latest innovations and our most symbolic creations. It is a tool for marketing and our design agencies. For example, we have reconstructed facings for retail travel, magazines and even a bar. This bar allows our clients to test their projects versus their competitors in situ. All this is found at our headquarters at Blanc-Mesnil, 5 minutes from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport and around 20 minutes from Paris. How does the future look for you? J.-D.C.: We aim to adapt our expertise to our sectors, such as mounted enclosures but also metal sleeves (a shell taking on the form of primary packaging, ndlr) or merchandising. This activity currently represents only 5% of our turnover and includes many references such as glass mounts, display stands, stoppers or even luminous objects. Finally, this consists of capitalizing on the natural qualities of metal, its versatility of forms and finish, cold touch, perceived value but also its cost. With tools costs 50 to 70% less than plastic injection tools, metalwork allows a lot of room for innovation. Elsewhere, the markets do not make mistakes and elect this noble and authentic material. In parallel, we will be consolidating our position of leader of the upscale metallic container market, by aiming to integrate partners and specialists of other materials. p Interview by Éloïse Cohen

THE HAUTE COUTURE CATWALK OF FINE CHOCOLATE

Christophe Roussel

In the small world of the great chocolate makers, packaging has become a major factor in setting themselves apart from the competition. Beyond marketing, artisans use it to express all of their singularity.

N

ark or milk? Chocophiles no longer ask themselves that question as such. These enlightened fans only speak of the names of beans (Criollo, Forastero, Trinitario) and the Madagascar, Brazil, Ecuador, São Tomé grands crus which master chocolate makers hand select. Long gone are the days when they were unceremoniously mixed! Today, people only swear by “Pur Origine.” And maestros of cacao are just as uncompromising on the quality of spices, dried fruits and citrus fruits. But they know that flattering chocolate addicts’ taste buds is no longer enough: their eyes should also be just as pleased. Thus, the pursuit of excellence now ranges from beans to chocolate boxes, and from cacao trees to veritable jewellery cases exhibited in opulent boutiques in plush Parisian neighbourhoods. It is true that certain big names in the profession, such as Jacques Génin or Pierre Hermé, do not focus as much on their packaging with the same care as they pay to their ganaches and their pralines. But the majority of the best artisans compete with discreet ferocity in the field of packaging. And they jealously guard the secrets of its development. “I don’t want someone from the outside, because the external packaging should correspond to the recipes. Softness, strength, and character are all expressed via packaging,” says Patrice Chapon. And there’s the

It’s their job to find industrial solutions,” says Julie Roussel. It’s a policy also adopted by Patrick Roger as well as the young brand Hugo & Victor, whose founders, Hugues Pouget and Sylvain Blanc design boxes in collaboration with an internal graphic designer, before sending 3D creations to suppliers who compete for each project.

projet.

There is one notable exception in the field: Pierre Cluizel. The son of the chocolate maker Michel Cluizel, who launched an all chocolate concept store (tea room, restaurant, boutique) named Un Dimanche à Paris, he entrusted the design agency Dragon Rouge with the task of designing his brand identity: but still not without keeping a prominent role in the creative process. Thus, he insisted on the importance of naturalness. It is a dimension which resulted in the choice of a

cacao tree as the emblem along with waxed cord, rather than a satin ribbon. The objective was “to symbolise the chain of expertise with this rough bond,” from the plantation to the laboratory. There was the same logic for François Pralus, wrapping their tablets with a simple cord, “as a reminder his ethics and a nod to his plantation,” says their export manager, Chloé Le Gaillard. Even the very chic Pierre Marcolini, presenting chocolates like jewels nestled in elegant caskets, chose the cacao pod, the fruit of the cacao tree, as a reminder of his sourcing work in the tropics, in search of the best raw ingredients. The extravagant Patrick Roger expresses his naturalness through his iconic colour, emerald green; but there’s no reference here to the chocolate product. The iconoclastic artisan chose it to evoke the forests of Perche, where he grew up. A thousand flavours, a thousand colours

In a totally different style, the chocolate make, for his Trésor box, has chosen rich historically inspired illustrations, in purple and white, creating a toile de Jouy effect. François Pralus has produced his “Pur Origine” range in ten tablets, each with its own colour: fuchsia, lime green, turquoise blue, orange... “We realised that by stacking the ten flagship house chocolates, we get a very aesthetic colourful pyramid,” says Chloé Le Gaillard. The graphic effect has been so successful that the

Pierre Cluizel has totally banished brown to emphasise his uniqueness: “We chose silver to suggest the equipment of chocolate making, taupe grey for lifestyle, and anise to give a contemporary feel,” he explains. Pierre Marcolini has stripped focussed on stripped down elegance: dark monochrome packaging, often black: a classic but effective way to demonstrate his premium positioning. It’s an approach that Patrice Chapon does not subscribe to: “It is often assumed that a brand has to have unity, but I think that packaging, like fashion, is a way of life and has to change with seasons and places. I would not have a black box in June, for example. Ideally, I wish there were a box of chocolates in every room of the house.” Thus, while the chocolate maker has a soft pink as the base colour for his classic boxes, he designed vibrant kaleidoscopes to illuminate his Révérence au temps collection, whose sleeves are decorated with multiple polychrome scrolls. It was the same approach for the Opale gift box, whose Agathe chocolate praline balls are decorated and glazed to resonate with the shimmering decoration of the

So chic, so French!

For foreigners, Paris is not Paris without the Eiffel Tower. And some chocolate makers don’t hesitate to use its image for gourmet treats and on cases. Patrice Chapon has thus designed a curved box in the shape of the tower, for his salt praline

domes. For their part, the Roussel duo is working on the packaging of their upcoming product, the ITower, a small “stripped down design” Eiffel Tower. This is not their first venture using the image, as “Pur Origine” tablet range, in a cardboard case, features a window in the slender silhouette of tower. Located in La Baule, but having lived in Paris, Christophe and Julie Roussel have a particular attachment to the capital, which they also express with their multicoloured (petite Butte Montmartre) treats, carefully arranged in a box with an eye-catching green lid. There’s a very different approach to taken fantasy, chosen by a newcomer to the profession, Hugo & Victor, launched in 2010 by pastry chef Hugues Pouget and the entrepreneur Sylvain White. As its name suggests, the brand was inspired by the literary world of Saint-Germaindes-Prés. This positioning is reflected in their packaging, with a unique open case, with atypical opening, in the form of a book. “We were inspired by Moleskine notebooks. Obviously, we were not able to use that actual material: we replace it with Balacron. The final cost is still high, but the volumes we now sell allow us to have reasonable prices,” says Hugues Pouget. And the opening of their boutique on Boulevard Raspail represented something of a gamble. R

house was used it for its entire visual identity, including its website. Another chocolate maker who is partial to fantasy is Christophe Roussel. “We don’t want austere packaging, even though we're at the high end of the market. We want gift boxes which are like ourselves: fun, dynamic, poppy,” says Julie Roussel. And so, while black is the basic colour for their boxes, it is accompanied by coloured squares and give them a modern feel. The most surprising packaging is Kisses From, the flagship chocolate of the house, shaped like lips, and available in green, brown and red. The cover is decorated with feminine lip prints, as if left in lipstick after a kiss. Purple lips, but also black. Black on black? “We created a visual effect using a selective varnish. This method also gives different textures to the box,” she says. “It is, of course, somewhat risky, but in the end, boldness pays: their customers are very fond of them!” The French, but also tourists who love luxury chocolates.

The result is Sac Intense, inspired by the design of a flagship model by the leather maker, named the Sac Ut, which resembles a jewellery box, each of whose drawers contains chocolates presented like rings on velvet cushions. And to further emphasise the preciousness, Pierre Marcolini makes his products in very small sizes. It is an aesthetic and tasting choice also adopted by the majority of his colleagues, who favour square formats, packed against one another and aligned in their boxes. “I only use this format, so that I can fit them in more easily and create a visual identity,” explains Pierre Cluizel. Julie and Christophe Roussel take the opposite approach. “I think it’s sad to standardise the form of sweets and

It’s clear that chocolate makers don’t skimp on the quality of materials and their treatment: embossing, selective varnishes, glitter effects, hot stamping... And when you’re positioned at the top end, there’s no question of using thin cardboard. Christophe and Julie Roussel are thus in the process of swapping out outer covers, considered too supple, for rigid heavy lids. Another fundamental trend is the format of boxes, very flat and voluminous. Because the ultimate goal is to have chocolates on one level in order to present them like gems and avoid chocolate lovers having to reach into the bottom of the box to see the treasures held in their lower levels. To avoid stacking chocolates while keeping the design of his multicoloured stack of “Pur Origine” tablets, François Pralus has created a small cubic case with nested levels which can be taken out at will. The chocophile can thus open up the levels to discover what treats are hiding there. For his part, Pierre Marcolini entrusted the Belgian leather goods maker Delvaux with creating packaging presenting each of his universes.

On perd l’effet graphique, juge Julie Roussel.

packs: you lose the graphic effect,” says Julie Roussel. “For the Kisses From lips we created a special mould; we were not going to then make them bland by using conventional packaging.” Rather than pack their choco-

lates against each other as most of their competitors do, they leave ample space between each one, which they keep in place with thermoforming. “This insert also allows us to protect the chocolates during transport: this is essential for export,” she continues. And Patrice Chapon has also not been caught up in the trend for flat boxes, and to mark the occasion of the opening of his boutique in Rue du Bac, he designed a small case in limited edition, resembling an old fashioned travel trunk. With its leather and copper look, he wanted to appeal to a male audience. “I designed it to be placed on a desk, imagining the chocolate lover offering one to a colleague or a client,” says Patrice Chapon; and, in the back of his mind, like Hugo & Victor with their book, hoping that chocolate fans would want to keep the case afterwards. p Ophélie Colas des Francs

What if the luxury sector snubs the prevailing atmosphere of gloom by promoting forms which are an invitation to conviviality and a break from the daily grind? The theme of nomadism is recurrent, and each market is appropriating it with its own codes. Perfumes and cosmetics are being miniaturised to make themselves more indispensable, makeup is focussing on technology, while champagnes and spirits are appropriating imagination for a journey of the senses. Nomadism sells and has not finished is spread in luxury goods.

n this category, nomadism is not only synonymous with small sizes, as opposed to cosmetics and perfumery. “In makeup, nomadism is synonymous with travel, small doses, but also with easy gestures and 2-in-1’s,” says Aurélie Emond, marketing director for Rigid Cosmetic Packaging at Albéa. “This is a fundamental trend which we are following closely and which frequently comes up in the briefs of

our clients worldwide.” Of course, brands are playing the game of mini-products in order to attract young people who have a limited budget and change fashions like they do a shirt. “The luxury sector is strongly adopting small formats, even in makeup because it becomes more affordable and can thus attract consumers who cannot afford a full size version,” says Christophe Lerouge, president of the Crepuscule agency. “It’s a reality which not only affects cosmetics. The objective behind this marketing strategy is impulse buying.”

Thus, a pioneer of the genre, Bourjois, every year launches a collection of mini nail polish in the colours of the season. But makeup products, already reduced in volume, cannot be miniaturised infinitely. The nomadic trend is thus playing out differently. Because consumers are looking for clover products that they can carry in their purse for makeup at any time at home, in the car, or at work, for several years we have seen the development of formats which are more convenient formats to use. It is from this trend that the

And so, the LVMH brand this year presented it rosé brut in a case which encourages nomadism. It opens and unfolds like the pleats of a haute couture dress. This packaging keeps the

champagne cool for up to two hours, and is available in two versions with or without a pair of champagne flutes. “Travel is part of the story-telling and some of these brands also have the good fortune of having it in their historytelling,” says designer Cédric Raynaud. This is the case for Nicolas Feuillatte, which has its travel heritage. “Ten years ago, we completely repositioned our image around the compass, because Nicolas Feuillatte is the brand of nomadism par excellence,” says

designed by the Chic design agency, is injected and covered with leather effect anthracite PU, and evokes a travelling trunk with silver metal corners and its handle decorated with a metal tag, and whose sole ornamentation is a steel plate, laser engraved on its facing. Its originality lies in its surprising opening mechanism, developed by Cosfibel Premium. To open the case, you need the key, or rather the tag which is in fact a magnetic plate to be inserted into a slot

on the side of the case. Thus, the inserted key also serves as a handle to pull in order to smoothly slide out the side opening. The bottle is nestled in its padded interior in pearl grey suede, decorated with an embossed logo. Examples are numerous: suitcases, ice-bags, spirits are dressing up for a voyage of the senses. The only limit their development may be their weight: this secondary packaging should primarily facilitate transportation and travel. p

Caroline Defaut, marketing and communications manager at Nicolas Feuillatte. “We offer a journey between Epernay, the birthplace of our brand, and New York where it was launched and elsewhere…” The brand orients all its positioning around the concept of exploration, with bottles decorated with planispheres and even limited editions equipped with a wrist strap to concretise this strong position. Premium brands cannot allow themselves to fall into facileness in terms of

nomadism. Their position does not allow them to use can, screw caps or stand-up pouches. Travel retail in the crosshairs It is the explosion in the number of air passengers which has driven the trend for nomadism and the imagination of travel in the spirits sector. “Travel retail has a strong impact, especially in the Asia region, with a strong focus on gifts,” says Eric Tollemer, managing director of Cosfibel Singapore.

uerlain, Shiseido, Hermès, Paul Smith, Lauder, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Mumm... are major international names poised to dethrone Loewe, Germaine de Cappuccini and others in the hearts – and client lists – of local manufacturers of luxury packaging? The question certainly deserves some attention because while the very best of Made-in-Spain luxury is still for consumption here: over 50% of local production is destined for export. It is a share which has grown steadily over the last 10 years. Why, how? At Technotraf where there is a maximum degree of openness – 85% of their activity is for export– Jaume Ordeig, their commercial director, suggests several answers. Starting with the creative effervescence which seems to characterise Spain: “I am convinced that Spain is a country of creation and

creators: the tremendous creativity which exists in Barcelona in the field of design attests to this. In any case, now there is no choice but to be creative. And Spanish companies are very good as negotiating the delicate balance which has to be maintained between unbridled creativity and rationalisation in terms of aesthetics and technical innovation.” Pioneers in the wood segment

As proof of this, it was Technotraf itself that has brought wooden packaging to acclaim, by, in the early 2000’s, focussing on a material which had been very little used until then: “Brands had long refused to consider wood as an option for packaging, especially in cosmetics and perfumery,” says Jaume Ordeig. “That’s why we are proud to have paved the way: natural pioneers – Technotraf is located near

A living material, but also a sustainable one, from PEFC certified forests

for a luxury sector which is increasingly ethical; so is wood therefore the future of prestige packaging? Jaume Ordeig is convinced that it is. But don’t be deceived: wood is far from the only area of innovation for Spanish suppliers. They are also standing out in the field of filming.

> A specialist in compression moulding of thermo-set parts, Plasticos Juarez works extensively with France. R region,” says Antonio Martinez, the CEO of Salinas. “But with the arrival of designers such as Stuart Weitzman and Louboutin who carried out some or all of their production in our geographical area, the situation has changed dramatically to evolve towards resolutely high quality packaging. Clearly, we have gone from simple boxes to cases.” Cases in the form of rigid boxes which are made precious at Salinas and that, whether they are for fashion accessories which now constitute 29% of their business activity, or for perfumes and cosmetics (44% of their production), or wines, spirits and gourmet products (24%). “The diversification of our activities has been accompanied by significant technological investments in order to be able to meet all our clients’ expectations in terms of formats and printing techniques or hot stamping. For example, we were the first to acquire the first machine of automatic edgeturning for round cases. And there are only two of them in the world…” Increasingly specialised technologies to support diversification which can concern materials themselves, such as at Tesem, a leader in the manufacture of luxury packaging in aluminium, whose core metal business was extended into plastic via the integration into the group of the company Motecsa: “caps, collars, and plaques for perfumery and cosmetics, and more recently trimmings for champagne and spirits stoppers: for 30 years we have

*Source : Ubifrance Espagne.

Against the background of the crisis, Spain has chosen its side: that of luxury, resolutely focussed on international markets. You just have to stroll along the magnificent Paseo de Gracia to be convinced, because while the Spanish luxury market certainly saw a less dramatic rise in 2013 (+7%) compared to 2012 (+15%) or 2011 (+25%)*, the biggest names in the world

continue to jostle for position there. And Spain's most prestigious brands continue to attract their quota of tourists in general, and rich Chinese and Russian tourists in particular. Because it is here that the situation has changed, as emphasised by Vanessa Larecq, head of division for Ubifrance Iberian Peninsula: “While a decade ago local clientele generated about two-thirds of sales in the sector, today they account for little more than a third: against the backdrop of a low level of consumption in Spain, it is foreign tourists with high purchasing power who account for these positive figures.” This evolution is focussed on cosmetics and gastronomy (led by gourmet products), which accounted for 60% of sales in 2013 out of a sector estimated at 5 billion euros,* followed by jewellery, leather goods and tourism: of the luxury variety, naturally. * Source: Ubifrance Spain.

This discreet major collector of contemporary art is dusting off the signatures of the biggest houses. With a certain vision of aesthetics.

atrick Lerouge is a discreet man. The director of the Médiane agency, located in Courbevoie, at the foot of the towers of La Défense, is a major contemporary art collector, including of street art. He also happens to lend some of his paintings to the greatest museums around the world. This facet of his personality may seem far removed from the world in which he works. Quite the contrary! When he puts his creativity at the service of such prestigious houses as Hennessy, Deutz, Louis Roederer, Camus, Nicolas Feuillatte, Diageo, Veuve Clicquot, Chateau Margaux, and Albert Menes, he also brings them a contemporary vision of art, or more precisely, a certain aesthetic. “We work in a universe governed by elegance, refinement and attention to detail,” says Patrick Lerouge. “Our expertise lies in our capabilities as designers to recreate as accurately as possible the history of the brand, and at the same time, its contemporaneity. This is an exercise which ultimately requires great humility and skilful abilities for «juggling». Without stifling their creativity, designer fades into the background to serve the house and product he is staging.

Just seven years ago, Patrick Lerouge acquired the company Médiane, founded in 1972 by André Fourmy, a former collaborator of the famous Ateliers Dinand. While retaining the spirit and the historical expertise of the design agency, he has breathed new life into the team of creators and designers, all senior. “Much of our creative research is done via a pencilling stage, computers are only used in the next stage of the design process,” he explains. “In this sense, we have retained the expertise of the agency, including when it comes to creating or rejuvenating a coat of arms for a champagne house. In parallel, we have developed new functions to adapt to our clients’ expectations. Thus, for example, we have integrated strategic planning, which has become a key element in brand communication.” A man of challenges

From visual identity, right up to packaging, along with volume design, publishing, and merchandising, Patrick Lerouge and his creative team examine all of the communication tools of a brand. For a limited edition

by Hennessy, they recently designed the Coffee Table Book Os Gemeos, two Brazilian street artists. Last year, it was the wrapping for the third vin Margaux, and the creation of the case for the prestigious whiskey Lagavulin 37. “These examples are emblematic of our approach, which is to find the right balance between the legacy of a house and a more avantgarde vision of the product”. Patrick Lerouge also loves challenges. For three the last years, he has invested himself in the Chinese market, trying to feed on this culture which is so rich and distant from Western codes of luxury. And for Pernod Ricard China he has just done the design and creation for the prestige vintage Helan Mountain, a veritable powerhouse for other wines in the range. And for the presentation in France of the famous Baiju by the Chinese company Luzhou, the agency organised a master class held by a cellar master, inviting specialised journalists. Patrick Lerouge and his team had previously designed a prestige crystal bottle, presented at an event, also organised by the agency, in the iconic setting of the Louvre Pyramid. p Agnès Delcourt
