PROLOGUE Tonio the clown announces that what the audience is about to see is a true story and that actors have the same joys and sorrows as other people.
ACT I A small theatrical company has just arrived and Canio, the head of the troupe, advertises the night’s performance to the gathered crowd. One of the villagers suggests that Tonio is secretly courting Canio’s young wife, Nedda. Canio warns them all that he will not tolerate any flirting offstage—life and theater are not the same. As the crowd disperses, Nedda is left alone, disturbed by her husband’s jealousy. She looks up to the sky, envying the bird’s freedom. Tonio appears and tries to force himself on Nedda, but she beats him back, and he retreats, swearing revenge. In fact, Nedda does have a lover—Silvio, a young peasant, who suddenly appears. The two reaffirm their love, and Silvio persuades Nedda to run away with him that night. Tonio, who has returned and overheard the end of their conversation, alerts Canio, but Silvio manages to slip away unrecognized. Canio violently threatens Nedda, but she refuses to reveal her lover’s name. Beppe, another member of the troupe, restrains Canio, and Tonio advises him to wait until the evening’s performance to catch the culprit. Alone, Canio gives in to his despair—he must play the clown even though his heart is breaking.
ACT II That evening, the villagers assemble to watch the performance, Silvio among them. Beppe plays Harlequin, who serenades Columbine, played by Nedda. He dismisses her buffoonish servant Taddeo, played by Tonio, and over dinner the two sweethearts plot to poison Columbine’s husband Pagliaccio, played by Canio. When Pagliaccio unexpectedly appears, Harlequin slips away. Taddeo maliciously assures Pagliaccio of his wife’s innocence, which ignites Canio’s jealousy. Forgetting his role and the play, he demands that Nedda tell him the name of her lover. She tries to continue with the performance, the audience enthralled by its realism, until Canio snaps. In a fit of rage he stabs Nedda and then Silvio, who rushes to her aid. Turning to the horrified crowd, Tonio announces that the comedy is over. —The Metropolitan Opera

DIRECTOR Leoncavallo explains in the Prologue of Pagliacci that the author intends to redefine the way stories are presented on the stage. He wants to move from artificial characters and epic stories to more realistic settings that present the faults and qualities of human nature. Similarities that decades later Italian Neorealism would present with the world of cinema. It addressed the conditions of the poor and the working class in everyday life and themes of oppression, injustice, and decay. This production is loosely based on those premises with a mediocre film director attempting to put on a film and invites an audience to witness the actors working. Abusing his power the actors become mere puppets in his scheme to present a depiction of the fragility of the human spirit. Octavio Cardenas Director

Kostis Protopapas was named General Director of Opera Santa Barbara in December 2017, after twoand-a-half seasons as Artistic Director. During his time as Artistic Director and principal conductor, Kostis brought a unified vision to OSB’s musical and production values, strengthening the orchestra and chorus, engaging some of the country’s most promising young directors and singers, building a high-performing production team, and increasing focus on contemporary American opera. As General Director Kostis assembled Team OSB, a group of enthusiastic overachievers with a passion for innovation and the desire to strengthen the company’s bond with the community, who consistently exceed patrons’ expectations for programs, experiences and communications. Performance highlights from Kostis’ tenure include grand opera classics like Madama Butterfly, Manon, and Eugene Onegin as well as contemporary works like Daniel Catan’s Il Postino, the mariachi opera Cruzar la cara de la luna, and Laura Kaminsky’s As One. In the fall of 2022 the Santa Barbara Independent wrote: “From contemporary work to obscurities from the early 19th century, from staple repertoire to surprise elements, OSB continues to raise the bar on what an opera company can and should be, even in Santa Barbara.” Between March 2020 and June 2021, under Kostis’ leadership Opera Santa Barbara remained active and fully staffed. It was the first performing arts organization in Santa Barbara to offer streaming programming, and one of only two opera companies in California to present three live operas in the 2020-21 season. Additionally, Opera Santa Barbara became an advocacy leader for the reopening of the performing arts, and funded live performances by local musicians through “Operation Eurydice”. For his work during the pandemic, Kostis was listed among the Santa Barbara Independent’s 2021 Local Heroes. Before coming to Santa Barbara Kostis was the Artistic Director of Tulsa Opera since 2008. He previously was an Assistant Conductor with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera and Santa Fe Opera. At the Lyric Opera of Chicago, he also served as Assistant Chorus Master under Donald Palumbo for two seasons. Born in Athens, Greece, Kostis Protopapas studied Archaeology and History of Art at the University of Athens before coming to the United States in 1993, on an Onassis Foundation scholarship, to study piano at The Boston Conservatory and conducting at Boston University. He became an American citizen in 2011. He loves living in Santa Barbara and enjoys sailing on the Santa Barbara Channel.
ARTISTS OCTAVIO CARDENAS Stage Director
Octavio Cardenas captivates audiences with his visionary, visceral, and physical style of directing. Born in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, Opera News has praised him for “an immersive theater experience” while the Dallas Morning News hailed him for bringing “every character and situation to life.” Recent projects include Zorro with Opera Santa Barbara, La boheme with Opera Las Vegas. Upcoming projects see him direct the world premiere of Adam del Monte Flamenco Opera Llantos 1492 at Opera Southwest, the world premiere of the opera Dolores by Nicolas Lell Benavides and Marella Martin with Westedge Opera, San Diego Opera and Southwest Opera and Ainadamar with The Eastman School of Music. Mr. Cardenas’s recent productions of Silent Night for Fort Worth Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City were described as “a breathtaking realization” with “many brilliant touches.” The Kansas City Star called the Lyric Opera’s production “one of its finest performances in recent memory.” Other recent productions include La boheme for Des Moines Metro Opera, As One for UrbanArias for which MD Theater Guide acclaimed “Under the direction of Octavio Cardenas, the two stars playfully make great use of both stage and energetic space—it seemed the theatre condensed and expanded with Hannah’s journey.”

OJAI PIXIES Ojai Pixies, a selective Southern Californiabased girls’ choir. The Pixies are a collection of talented young singers aged 7-18, scouted and led by vocal director Julija Zonic. Their repertoire ranges from classical to pop, and they are giddily excited to participate in Pagliacci, their third production with Opera Santa Barbara. The Ojai Pixies are joined by the select members of The Ojai Suns Boy’s Choir. Julija Zonic is a voice and music educator, vocal director, and professional singer. Classically trained in her home country of Croatia, she moved to the USA as a war refugee in the 1990s and made Ojai, California, her new home. Her love of choral music started in her childhood while participating in Zvjezdice (Little Stars,) a Zagreb-based world-class girls’ choir. Julija was a founding member in 1985, and Zvjezdice continues to perform today. In addition to teaching and directing, Julija performs in the vocal duo Smitty and Julija, recording and performing original music.
