ARTISTIC
GENERAL DIRECTOR and BOARD CHAIR

Dear friends:
Today’s performance feels like a homecoming: after two-plus years of navigating every possible uncertainty while continuously reinventing and reimagining ourselves, our art form, and our mission, we return to the Granada for our first full-length grand opera production. Although our journey wasn’t quite as long as Odysseus’ return to Ithaca, it was equally full of adventure and new wisdom.
Over the last several years–including those of the pandemic–Opera Santa Barbara gained a reputation for creativity and innovation. Much of our 202122 season included lesser-known and contemporary works that connected us with our community in new and unexpected ways. Yet, producing vibrant productions of the classics remains in the center of our mission. Today’s performance attests to our love and devotion to this repertoire.
With La Traviata Verdi showed for the first time how romantic opera can be urgent and compelling contemporary drama. He provided an unsurpassed example of how music can serve as the basis for creating vibrant, threedimensional characters. His music goes straight to the heart with its simple beauty and sincerity. La Traviata demonstrates the timelessness of opera, and serves as an example of the perfect music drama.
We are thrilled that you are here this afternoon to experience this incredible work. Now more than ever our company is committed to producing vibrant music theater that celebrates operatic tradition and envisions its bright future. We look forward to producing classic and contemporary works with equal passion and audacity for many seasons to come!

Diane Louise Dodds-Reichert
January 7, 1947-March 22, 2022

For eleven years I had the privilege of being Diane’s loving partner. After four years, we married, and this past April 11 would have been our seventh anniversary. As she was hospitalized, I told her she HAD to get better so we could celebrate! Alas, such didn’t happen.
La Traviata is both the opening note and the coda for us. We met at Opera Santa Barbara’s opening dinner before the March 4, 2011 performance of La Traviata. Today’s show comes as we are in the process of saying goodbye to Diane and adjusting to a smaller world without her earthly presence.
Diane was first exposed to opera in a music appreciation class at Pasadena City College where she studied before transferring to UCSB. La Traviata was her first Opera Santa Barbara experience, beginning a new cultural love. She leaves a broad philanthropic legacy in our town. Along with having been a key contributor to this company, Diane supported the Choral Society, CAMA and the Natural History Museum, among others. The Santa Barbara Rescue Mission was her favorite human services charity, and she became a Gaucho for the ages. Along with having given significantly, at the time of her passing Diane served on the UCSB Alumni Board. Every so often in Heaven, I think she switches out her halo for a golden Gaucho hat!
Diane’s Celebration of Life will take place Saturday July 30 at 1:00, at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Barbara.

RUN TIME: APPROX. 1 HR 40 MIN. THERE WILL BE A 20 MIN INTERMISSION
Violetta Valéry is dying, plagued with a fatal illness and exhausted by her restless life as a courtesan. At a party she is introduced to Alfredo Germont, who has been fascinated by her for over a year. He offers a toast to true love, and Violetta responds in praise of free love (Ensemble: “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”). She is touched by his candid manner and honesty. Suddenly she feels faint, and the guests withdraw. Alfredo remains behind and declares his love (Duet: “Un dì felice”). There is no place for such feelings in her life, Violetta replies. She gives him a camellia, asking him to return when the flower has faded. He realizes this means he will see her again the following day. Alone, Violetta is torn by conflicting emotions—she doesn’t want to give up her way of life, but at the same time she feels that Alfredo has awakened her desire to be truly loved (“Ah, fors’è lui… Sempre libera”).
Violetta has chosen a life with Alfredo after all, and they have escaped to a country retreat to enjoy one another (“De’ miei bollenti spiriti”). When Alfredo discovers Violetta has been selling her property in order to finance their lifestyle, he immediately leaves for Paris to procure money. In Alfredo’s absence, his father, Giorgio Germont, pays Violetta a visit, demanding that she separate from his son, as the scandal of their relationship threatens his daughter’s impending marriage (Duet: “Pura siccome un angelo”). Over the course of their conversation, Germont comes to realize that Violetta is not after his son’s money—she is a woman who loves unselfishly. He appeals to Violetta’s generosity of spirit and explains that, without the assurance of marriage, her liaison with Alfredo has no future. Violetta’s resistance dwindles and she finally agrees to leave Alfredo forever. She makes plans to attend a grand party in Paris and writes a goodbye letter to her lover. Alfredo returns, and while he is reading the letter, his father appears to console him (“Di Provenza”), but Germont’s strongest pleas cannot prevent the furious and jealous Alfredo from seeking revenge for Violetta’s apparent betrayal.
At the masked ball, news has spread of Violetta and Alfredo’s separation. Violetta arrives on the arm of Baron Douphol while Alfredo gambles recklessly. When everyone has withdrawn, Alfredo confronts Violetta, who claims to be truly in love with the Baron. In his rage, Alfredo calls the guests to be witnesses: while he foolishly thought he and Violetta had been in love, he will now publicly pay for her services in full. Giorgio Germont arrives on the scene and rebukes Alfredo for his behavior. The baron challenges him to a duel.
ACT III
Violetta is dying. She pines over a well-worn letter from Alfredo’s father: his son lived through the duel, but has been traveling abroad. Full of remorse, Germont has told him about Violetta’s sacrifice. Alfredo wants to rejoin her as soon as possible, but Violetta is afraid that he might be too late (“Addio, del passato”). Alfredo does arrive and the two dream of a future away from Paris, where they will be happy together again. (Duet: “Parigi, o cara”). Violetta is overwhelmed with happiness, and for a moment, all seems well, but it is a cruel illusion and she dies, surrounded by the ones who love her.

Production sponsorships are one of the most important ways opera lovers can help bring works like this to the stage. Under normal circumstances, ticket sales and other earned income typically cover less than 35% of production costs. Sponsors help underwrite these costs allowing us to present hiqh quality operas while keeping ticket prices affordable.

Kostis Protopapas was named General Director of Opera Santa Barbara in December 2017, after two-and-a-half seasons as Artistic Director.
During his time as Artistic Director and principal conductor, Kostis brought a unified vision to OSB’s musical and production values, strengthening the orchestra and chorus, engaging some of the country’s most promising young directors and singers, building a high-performing production team, and increasing focus on contemporary American opera. As General Director, Kostis assembled a team of enthusiastic overachievers with a passion for innovation and the desire to strengthen the company’s bond with the community, who consistently deliver programs and communications far greater than what can be expected from the size of the company.
Performance highlights from Kostis’ tenure include grand opera classics like Madama Butterfly, Manon, and Eugene Onegin as well as contemporary works like Daniel Catan’s Il Postino, the mariachi opera Cruzar la cara de la luna, and Robert Ward’s The Crucible, which the Santa Barbara Independent called “one of the season’s most exciting performances of any kind in Santa Barbara”.
During Kostis’ tenure Opera Santa Barbara saw the creation of the Santa Barbara Youth Opera, a program providing educational and performance opportunities for school-age children; the expansion of the company’s Chrisman Studio program which this season includes twelve artists from California; and an impressive growth in the company’s community engagement and educational activities throughout the Central Coast.
Between March 2020 and June 2021, under Kostis’ leadership Opera Santa Barbara remained active and fully staffed. It was the first performing arts organization in Santa Barbara to offer streaming programming, and one of only two opera companies in California to present three live operas in the 2020-21 season. Additionally, Opera Santa Barbara became an advocacy leader for the reopening of the performing arts, and funded live performances by local musicians through “Operation Eurydice”.
Before coming to Santa Barbara Kostis was the Artistic Director of Tulsa Opera since 2008. He previously was an Assistant Conductor with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera and Santa Fe Opera. At the Lyric Opera of Chicago, he also served as Assistant Chorus Master under Donald Palumbo for two seasons..
Born in Athens, Greece, Kostis Protopapas studied Archaeology and History of Art at the University of Athens before coming to the United States in 1993, on an Onassis Foundation scholarship, to study piano at The Boston Conservatory and conducting at Boston University. He became an American citizen in 2011. He loves living in Santa Barbara, and enjoys downtown restaurants, the Funk Zone’s tasting rooms, and sailing on the Santa Barbara Channel.

Most recently, she worked with SFCM on a filmed version of Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II and and an in-theater production of Joseph Bologne’s L’Amant-Anonyme. When Heather is not in the theater, she is the Assistant Director at Studio 10 Dance, enjoys dim sum with her family and spends too much time taking care of their cat.

Stacie Logue / Costume Manager: Ms. Logue’s first production with Opera Santa Barbara with the 2004 production of Faust. Throughout the years Ms. Logue worked on many OSB classic productions of Rigoletto, Elixir of Love, Carmen and La Boheme. During this time she worked as a costume coordinator, design assistant & stitcher. In 2013 Ms. Logue designed costumes for Don Pasquale and became the main costumer for OSB. In 2017 Ms. Logue was promoted to Costume Manager. She continued to coordinate costumes for the larger shows and design the costumes for the smaller shows such as Double Bill Trouble in Tahiti/Gallantry, Dr. Miracle, Il Postino, Tragedy of Carmen, Don Pasquale, Das Rheingold. For this season 21/22 she will be designing & coordinating all of the shows. Since 2016 Ms. Logue also worked for Central City Opera Festival of Colorado as their costume shop manager during the summer. Before that she worked for the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, the Kingman Shakespeare Festival in Thousand Oaks, the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood & The Wallis Theater in Beverly Hills. But Ms. Logue’s home is with Opera Santa Barbara and she is very grateful for all of the opportunities they have offered her.

Healing Community & Supporting Musicians
During Covid Opera SB began a new initiative to financially support area musicians and help local venues permitted to host live music. To date, over 40 individual performers and groups have benefited from Operation Eurydice payments and thousands of Santa Barbara residents and visitors have experienced the comfort of live music when we needed it most
We extend a heartfelt thanks to the John C. Mithun Foundation, our community partners and donors to OSB’s Performing Artists Fund for helping us keep music playing with more than 66 events featured at Roar & Pour, Balcony Jam Sessions and Opera SB Night Out.
