Dear Friends:

Welcome to our company’s first baroque opera. This version of Handel’s Semele was created by Pittsburgh Opera in the spring of 2021, as part of that company’s initiatives to bring back live performances after the reopening of theaters. Created with pandemic constraints in mind (believe it or not, singers were masked during the Pittsburgh performances) it is a bright example of how artists find new and exciting ways to create art during the most desperate circumstances.

The vast majority of the repertoire performed by regional opera companies in the U.S. today was composed during the relatively short time frame between the premiere of Mozart’s The Marriage of Fígaro in 1786 and Puccini’s death in 1924. This practice throws out almost two centuries of fantastic music theater, since the Florentine Camerata invented the art form in 1600, together with the works created during our lifetimes and those of our parents. Our company is proud to be regularly breaking the latter of those venerable boundaries with productions of contemporary and recent works, and we are now excited to break the earlier one, and venture into the world of the first golden era of opera, when opera singers were the day’s rock stars, and productions were overthe-top outrageous.

Baroque music is probably more misunderstood than any other. When we look at the portraits of Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach, we see their powdered wigs, stiff overcoats, and unsmiling faces, and forget that those artists were as passionate, playful, and, yes, crazy as we are. Furthermore, laborious scholarship and officious performance practice edicts often result in overly long and antiseptic performances.

Our production of Semele was not created with the experts in mind. We believe that preconceptions are the worst enemy of good music theater, so our goal has been to put together an entertaining show with ninety minutes of the best vocal music ever written, featuring amazing singers. Handel, the composer of The Messiah, was above all a man of the theater. He would have wanted you to have a good time. Sit back, relax, and enjoy. Maybe you’ll even be inspired to learn the Charleston!.

Sarah Jane Lind passed away on December 11th, 2021. A major supporter of Opera Santa Barbara since its inception in 1994, Sarah was honored by the company as an Honorary Board member in 2018 for her many years of service and devotion. She was a passionate supporter of the performing arts in our community and gave generously to countless arts organizations and artists.

CHRISMAN STUDIO ARTIST PROGRAM

Named in recognition of the support of Sarah and Roger Chrisman, the Chrisman Studio Artist Program began in 2007 with the purpose of identifying and developing talented young opera performers. For more than a decade, the program has provided singers, as well as coaches, with high-level performance opportunities and valuable training. These performers work with top industry directors, conductors, and coaches in masterclasses, coachings, and public performances including cover and mainstage role assignments. Studio Artists Alumni are in high demand and have performed at companies around the US including the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, and abroad with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Regio, Opernhaus Zürich, Bregenzer Festspiele, Hong Kong Opera, and the Aix-enProvence Festival.

ACT 1 - A LOS ANGELES ESTATE AMONG THE ORANGE GROVES

Cadmus, a powerful patriarch, hosts an engagement party for his daughter Semele to Athamas, the son of another rich family. Signs from Juno, the Goddess of Marriage, indicate she approves of the match. However, Semele has been inventing one excuse after the other to put off the wedding and her father and would-be bridegroom urge her to hesitate no longer. To herself she reflects on how she does not wish to marry Athamas as she is in love with Jupiter, the King of the Gods, and calls on him to assist her. Ino, Semele’s sister, expresses her own state of distress as she is in love with Athamas.

Jove has heard Semele’s prayer and his thunderbolts interrupt the proceedings and alarm the observers except for Athamas, in despair at his wedding being cancelled, and Ino, hopelessly in love with him. Athamas is astonished when she tells him bluntly that she loves him. Cadmus interupts and the extraordinary event of Semele being carried off by an eagle, Jupiter’s animal form. The Act ends with Semele’s thoughts about her new life as Jupiter’s lover.

ACT 2

Scene 1 - The Great Mansion of Hollywoodland

Suspicious of her husband’s conduct, Juno - spurned wife of Jupiter- has sent Iris - Goddess of the Rainbow - find out what she can about Semele and Jupiter’s relationship. Outraged by what she learns, Juno swears to have revenge and seek magical assistance from Somnus, the god of Sleep.

Scene Two - Semele’s Room

Semele awakes and regrets that the dream she was having of being with her lover has ended. When Jupiter arrives, in the form of a young man, she tells him how difficult it is for her when he is absent. He explains that she is a mortal, unlike him, and needs to rest from their love-making from time to time. He attempts to assure her of his fidelity. Semele years to be turned in to a god, and her ambition worries Jupiter. He decides to distract her by having her sister, Ino, magically transported to keep her company. The joyful reunited sisters share their experiences and revel in the music of the spheres.

ACT 3

Scene One - Somnus’ Room

Juno and Iris arrive at Somnus’ cave and awaken him, much to his displeasure. Juno promises he will have the nymph he desires if he will lend her his magical aid. She tells him to put the dragons that guard Semele’s quarters to sleep, so she can transform herself into the likeness of Semele’s sister Ino and seek her revenge.

Scene Two - Semele’s Room

Juno, disguised as Ino, enters and feigns astonishment at Semele’s increased beauty. She exclaims that Semele must have become a goddess herself . “Ino” advises Semele to insist that Jupiter appear to her in his real, godlike form, which will make her immortal. “Ino” leaves and Jupiter enters, eager to enjoy Semele but she puts him off until he gives her what she desires. Reluctant to do so, he tells her it would cause her great harm, but she insists and leaves Jupiter knows this will mean her destruction and mourns her impending doom. Juno triumphs in the success of her scheme.

Scene Three

Semele’s family witnesses her awe-some tranformation from mortal to god which results in her consumed by flames and ultimate death. At the same time, Semele regrets her own foolishness and ambition. Ino then reveals that she has been told by the gods that she should marry her beloved Athamus, who readily agrees to this proposition. The gods celebrate the union of these two mortals.

Drawing from her diverse experience as a violinist, conductor, and coach, San Francisco Bay Area native Emily Senturia approaches operatic repertoire with a sympathetic affinity for both singers and instrumentalists.

In 2021, Ms. Senturia conducted La clemenza di Tito with Opera Steamboat, assisted Eun Sun Kim in the opening night gala for San Francisco Opera, conducted Dvořák’s 8th symphony with the Diablo Symphony, and continued coaching opera students at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Ms. Senturia made mainstage conducting debuts with Houston Grand Opera and Washington National Opera in 2018, both with Il barbiere di Siviglia Recently she has conducted La traviata with Hawaii Opera Theatre, Ariadne auf Naxos with Wolf Trap Opera, and Fellow Travelers with Boston Lyric Opera. She music directed the world premiere of Denis & Katya at Opera Philadelphia’s O19 Festival, and has been on the music staff at Houston Grand Opera (Nixon in China, Tosca, Aida), The Atlanta Opera (Sweeney Todd, Carmen), Wolf Trap Opera (The Ghosts of Versailles, Giulio Cesare, La bohème), and Opera Philadelphia (Sky on Swings, Elizabeth Cree, War Stories).

Ms. Senturia is an alum of the Houston Grand Opera Studio, Wolf Trap, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Royal Academy of Music. She studied orchestral conducting at Boston University and violin at Rice University.

Stage Director Sara E. Widzer continues to produce exceptional operatic and theatre works at companies across the United States and abroad. Currently serving on faculty at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Los Angeles, her guest engagements for the 2020-21 season include as director for Opera Santa Barbara’s Concert in the Car production of La Tragedié de Carmen and a directorial debut at Opera Orlando with a new production of Carmen. Ms. Widzer’s 2019-20 season included as director for the world premiere of the new

opera, JUANA, based on the novel Sor Juana’s Second Dream by Alicia Gaspar de Alba with music by Carla Lucero, for Opera UCLA. Also, the US premiere of La Morte d’Orfeo in her directorial debut at Los Angeles Opera. Among her engagements cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic were Assistant Director to Sir David McVicar at Los Angeles Opera for the mainstage production of Pelléas et Mélisande and as director at Music Academy of the West for a new production of Philip Glass’ Les Enfants Terribles

As an educator, Ms. Widzer is currently on faculty as acting coach and stage director at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Los Angeles, CA where she has been on staff for over fifteen years. On the opera stage, she has worked with members of the Glimmerglass Festival Young Artist Program, the Los Angeles Opera Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program, the WNO Cafritz Young Artist Program, and has also served as guest coach and lecturer at El Camino College, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State University Long Beach, and Florida State University. Ms. Widzer continues to guest teach acting at studios throughout the Los Angeles area, and also maintains a roster of speaking and singing actors for whom she coaches acting and performance technique.

She received her MM in Opera Directing from Florida State University, her BA in theatre from Connecticut College and has an Artist’s Diploma in Classical Acting/ Shakespeare from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in Shakespeare. Ms. Widzer makes her home in Los Angeles.

She recently joined the rosters of Palm Beach Opera’s Die Zauberflöte and Tulsa Opera’s Rigoletto to cover the roles of the roles of The Queen of the Night and Gilda, as well as made her hometown debut with Opera Santa Barbara as Norina in Don Pasquale. She was also slated for debuts with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and the Canadian Opera Company which have been postponed. Last season Ms. McIntyre made her debut with Heartbeat Opera in New York City singing Ännchen (role debut) in a new production of Weber’s Der Freischütz. She also debuted with Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera singing selections from Così fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro as Despina and Susanna. During the 2018-2019 season, Ms. McIntyre reprised the role of The Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute with Toledo Opera and Opera Grand Rapids. She also made company debuts with Arizona Opera in Le nozze di Figaro, The Santa Fe Opera in Jenůfa, and with Tulsa Opera singing the roles of Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Water in Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince. In addition, she covered La Fée in Laurent Pelly’s iconic production of Cendrillon at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Ms. McIntyre was a national finalist in the 2020 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and top prize winner of the George London Foundation Awards.

American dramatic tenor Robert Stahley, known for “bringing vociferous ring to the tenor line,” (South Florida Classical Review), is currently in his final year of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein young artist program at LA Opera. There, he has performed Walther in Tannhäuser, Le Berger in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex, Valcour in L’Amant Anonyme, and First Armored Man in Barrie Kosky’s famed production of Die Zauberflöte. In the 2021-2022 season, Mr. Stahley will perform Jupiter in Semele with Opera Santa Barbara, Narraboth in Salome with Bard Festival, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and a concert of opera favorites with Dayton Performing Arts.

In the 2021 festival season, Robert returned to the Santa Fe Opera as a secondyear Apprentice, where he performed the role of The Captain in the world premiere of John Corigliano’s The Lord of Cries and was featured in concert with Grammy Award-winning soprano Angel Blue. Recent engagements include the title role in The Tales of Hoffmann with Arbor Opera Theater, the tenor soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the Quad-City Symphony, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Lynn Philharmonia.

Opera News praised her performance in Le nozze di Figaro with Michigan Opera Theatre: “Sarah Coit’s burnished mezzo-soprano gave her Cherubino a seductive tinge. Her pure, lovely “Voi che sapete” confirmed her bright future, made all the more likely by her undeniable aptitude for physical comedy.” In the 2018-2019 season, Sarah was a Vocal Fellow with Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, made her Seattle Opera debut as Mercédès in Carmen, performed at the Ravinia Festival in Bernstein’s Songfest, joined West Edge Opera as Jenny Diver in The Threepenny Opera, and sang Olga in Eugene Onegin with Livermore Valley Opera. In the 2019-20 season, Sarah performed Mercédès in Carmen with Opera Tampa. Covering Daniela Mack as Rosmira in Handel’s Partenope with San Francisco Opera was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, Sarah sang Addison Moore in the world premiere film of Clint Borzoni and John de los Santos’ The Copper Queen with Arizona Opera, Varvara in Katya Kabanova with West Edge Opera, Rosina in The Barber of Seville with Utah Opera, and Handel’s Messiah with Winston-Salem Symphony, American Bach Soloists, and Indianapolis Symphony. In 2022, she makes a house and role debut with San Diego Opera as Stéphano in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Sarah was a 2017 National Semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. A native of Spring Hill, FL, Sarah holds degrees in Music Studies and Theatre Performance from the University of South Florida and a Masters degree from the University of Michigan.

Praised for his “striking musicality, clarity, and strong coloratura” (Opera Canada), countertenor Logan Tanner has performed on operatic stages throughout the United States and abroad. He recently performed the role of Ruggiero in Handel’s Alcina at the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, and “commanded the role of Oberon charmingly” (Opera Canada) in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Halifax Opera Festival.

Tanner has been a Stern fellow at SongFest, and a Vocal Fellow at The Music Academy of the West, where he worked with famed mezzo-soprano, Marilyn Horne. He has been engaged as soloist with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Austin Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Europa, North Carolina Baroque Orchestra, the Axelrod Performing Arts Center, New York Repertory Orchestra, the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, Choralis, Chorus Austin, New York Chamber Choir, the Henry Purcell Society of Boston, La Fiocco, the Arcadia Players, Monmouth Civic Chorus, the Westchester Oratorio Society, and the Sparkill Concert Series.

A native of Texas, Mr. Tanner started his musical studies as a tenor at Baylor University and went on to graduate studies at Westminster Choir College. There he studied with Christopher Arneson who encouraged him to become a countertenor. Mr. Tanner dove into the repertoire and found it a perfect match.

During the 2020-21 season, Mr. Ramsey returned to San Diego Opera as Colline in La bohème, Opera Santa Barbara as Fafner in Jonathan Dove’s arrangement of Das Rheingold, joined Pacific Opera Project as Guglielmo in a new production of Così fan tutte and the Festival Lyrique en Mer as Leporello in Don Giovanni Other recent engagements include Leporello in Don Giovanni, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Alidoro in La Cenerentola, and Reverend Hale in Robert Ward’s The Crucible. Later this season he will return to San Diego Opera for his role debut as Capulet in Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet as well as to Opera Santa Barbara to reprise Cadmus/Somnus in Handel’s Semele

Mr Ramsey’s passion for oratorio and concert work has brought him as a soloist to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and La Jolla Symphony. Performing as the bass soloist in Verdi’s Requiem, Dvorâk’s Stabat Mater, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Handel’s Messiah, Faurè’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy and the Brahms Requiem

Mr. Ramsey’s training includes residencies with Santa Fe Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, and Sarasota Opera, among others. He is a winner of the Pasadena Opera Guild Competition, 3rd Prize winner in the Rocky Mountain Region of The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions

Hailed for her “resonant, smoky mezzo”, Mezzo-soprano Christina Pezzarossi is quickly gaining recognition as a distinguished and versatile young artist in the world of opera. Originally from Miles City, Montana, she received her Master’s degree from the The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

In the 2021/2022 season, Christina made her debut with Opera Santa Barbara as Wellgunde in Das Rheingold and is excited to join them again as Ino in Handel’s Semele and as Stephanie in Michael Ching’s Speed Dating Tonight with her fellow Chrisman Studio Artists. This coming season also includes a recital tour titled, Country Roads and Coloratura with Intermountain Opera, and performances of Handel’s Messiah

During the 2020 season, she made her debut with Pacific Opera Project in a critically acclaimed drive-in performance of Cosi fan tutte (under the parody title COVID fan tutti) as Dorabella. For the 2018/2019 season, Christina joined Pensacola Opera as a Resident Artist, singing Gertrude in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette and Paula in Catan’s Florencia en el Amazonas. She also was an Apprentice Artist at Central City Opera, making her company and role debut as Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. Christina also spent two summers as an Apprentice with Des Moines Metro Opera, covering Mrs. Segstrom in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music and The Stewardess in Jonathan Dove’s Flight.

When she’s not singing, Christina can be found hiking with her husband, bass Colin Ramsey and dog Leilani, or helping out on her family’s cattle ranch near Red Lodge, MT.

Sunwoo Park is a Korean Soprano based in Los Angeles, CA. She is currently pursuing Graduate Certificate program at the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California. As a Chrisman Studio Artist at Opera Santa Barbara 2021-2022, she first participated as Seamstress in Il Tabarro in October, 2021. For the upcoming engagement, she will be participating as a Filene Artist performing Ännchen in Der Freischütz at the Wolf Trap Opera 2022. Her engagement in 2020 was to perform Papagena in The Magic Flute and to cover First Sprite in Rusalka at The Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singer Program and to cover Witness 1, Singer 1 and Woman 1 in Lessons in Love and Violence by George Benjamin at Lyric Opera of Chicago and also to perform as a “Calisto” in Cavalli’s La Calisto at USC Opera. However, those scheduled performances were canceled due to COVID-19. Before then, she participated as an Apprentice Singer covering Musetta in La Bohème at The Santa Fe Opera 2019. At USC Opera, she performed as a “Susanna” in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and “Le Feu (The Fire)” in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges and a “Lady with a Hand Mirror’’ in Dominick Argento’s Postcard from Morocco. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from the Seoul National University where she graduated cum laude with the Eminence scholarship. She also recorded songs in the advertisement of Nikon Camera in Japan and the main title song of “Tachikoma” which is a famous animation movie in Japan.

Yuki Izumihara is a scenic, projection, and production designer born in Shimonoseki City, Japan and based in Los Angeles. Ms. Izumihara’s work is influenced by years of martial arts training and is animated by a belief in discipline, ethics and craftsmanship. Her work has been featured at LA Opera, the New World Symphony, The Adrienne Arsht Center, San Diego Opera, the Hammer Museum, the Getty Villa Museum, and numerous theaters in Los Angeles. Recent engagements include scenic design for The Capulets and the Montagues with Opera Omaha; Sanctuaries with Third Angle New Music; production design for The Fall of the House of Usher and desert in (co-produced by Long Beach Opera) with Boston Lyric Opera; production design for Close Quarters with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra; video art for The West is a Land of Infinite Beginnings with LA Opera Digital Shorts. Upcoming projects includes: production design for Quando, Stimmung, and projection design for Central Park Five at Long Beach Opera.

Other favorite opera designs include The Marriage of Figaro and Eugene Onegin (Florida Grand Opera), Aida (Vancouver Opera, Portland Opera), Samson and Delilah and La Boheme (Tulsa Opera), La Traviata and The Merry Widow (Kansas City Lyric Opera), and Rockland (Pine Mountain Music Festival). Timothy Accurso is the Principal Pianist and Music Administrator for Opera Santa Barbara and joined Team OSB in 2018. Tim has been on music staff with Palm Beach Opera, Opera Saratoga, and the Seagle Music Colony. This season Tim will rejoin the music staff at Utah Opera in the spring for their production of Pirates of Penzance Originally from Glen Lyon, Pennsylvania, he completed his undergraduate studies at Susquehanna University in vocal and piano performance, and went on to receive a Master’s of Music in vocal coaching and accompanying from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied with Dr. Julie Jordan Gunn. Following his studies, Tim became a resident artist with Utah Opera as well as a young artist with Opera Saratoga. Tim spends his time coaching the Chrisman Studio artists,

engaging in the education initiatives of Opera Santa Barbara, playing mainstage rehearsals, and performing throughout the community in recitals and events with the company. In addition to the vibrant arts scene, Tim loves Santa Barbara for its beautiful weather, vast wine industry, and stunning views.

HEATHER STERLING MORSE Hair & Makeup Design

Heather Sterling has been designing and implementing wig and makeup looks for theater for the past 18 years and is proud to be working again with Opera Santa Barbara. Recent OSB credits include Il Tabarro/El Amor Brujo, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna and Das Rheingold

Heather also shares her time with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a Wig and Makeup Designer as well as a workshop educator in the craft of theatrical hair and makeup. Most recently, she designed hair/makeup for SFCM’s Hansel and Gretel and San Jose Opera’s Dido and Aeneas. When Heather is not in the theater, she is the Assistant Director at Studio 10 Dance in the Bay Area, an impassioned foodie and suspects she is afflicted with a mild case of dromomania.

LIVES IN: Ventura, CA

Stacie Logue / Costume Manager: Ms. Logue’s first production with Opera Santa Barbara with the 2004 production of Faust. Throughout the years Ms. Logue worked on many OSB classic productions of Rigoletto, Elixir of Love, Carmen and La Boheme. During this time she worked as a costume coordinator, design assistant & stitcher. In 2013 Ms. Logue designed costumes for Don Pasquale and became the main costumer for OSB. In 2017 Ms. Logue was promoted to Costume Manager. She continued to coordinate costumes for the larger shows and design the costumes for the smaller shows such as Double Bill Trouble in Tahiti/Gallantry, Dr. Miracle, Il Postino, Tragedy of Carmen, Don Pasquale, Das Rheingold. For this season 21/22 she will be designing & coordinating all of the shows. Since 2016 Ms. Logue also worked for Central City Opera Festival of Colorado as their costume shop manager during the summer. Before that she worked for the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, the Kingman Shakespeare Festival in Thousand Oaks, the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood & The Wallis Theater in Beverly Hills. But Ms. Logue’s home is with Opera Santa Barbara and she is very grateful for all of the opportunities they have offered her.

Healing Community & Supporting Musicians

During Covid Opera SB began a new initiative to financially support area musicians and help local venues permitted to host live music. To date, over 40 individual performers and groups have benefited from Operation Eurydice payments and thousands of Santa Barbara residents and visitors have experienced the comfort of live music when we needed it most
