On their way to Austria, the terrified Marquise of Berkenfeld and her butler, Hortensius, have paused on their journey because they have found the French army blocking their way. When the Marquise hears from the villagers that the French troops have at last retreated, she comments on the crude ways of the French people (“Pour une femme de mon nom”). Hortensius asks Sulpice, sergeant of the 21st regiment, to let the Marquise continue on. Sulpice is joined by Marie, the mascot, or “daughter,” of the regiment, which adopted her as an orphaned child. When Sulpice questions her about a young man she has been seen with, she explains that he is a local Tyrolean who—though an enemy—once saved her life. Troops of the 21st arrive with a prisoner: this same Tyrolean, Tonio, who says he has been looking for Marie. She steps in to save him, and while he toasts his new friends, Marie sings the regimental song (“Chacun le sait”). Tonio is ordered to follow the soldiers, but he escapes and returns to declare his love to Marie. Sulpice surprises them, and Marie must admit to Tonio that she can only marry a soldier from the 21st.
The Marquise of Berkenfeld asks Sulpice for an escort to return her to her castle. When he hears the name Berkenfeld, Sulpice remembers a letter he discovered near the young Marie when she was found. The Marquise soon admits that she knew the girl’s father and says that Marie is the long-lost daughter of her sister. The child had been left in the care of the Marquise, but was lost on a battlefield. Shocked by the girl’s rough manners, the Marquise is determined to take her niece to her castle and to give her a proper education. Tonio has enlisted so that he can marry Marie (“Ah, mes amis”), but she has to leave both her regiment and the man she loves (“Il faut partir”).
The Marquise has arranged a marriage between Marie and Duke Jean Luc, nephew of the Duchess of Krakenthorp. Sulpice has joined the Marquise at the Berkenfeld castle, recovering from an injury and supposed to help her
with her plans. The Marquise gives Marie a singing lesson, accompanying her at the piano. Encouraged by Sulpice, Marie slips in phrases of the regimental song, and the Marquise loses her temper (Trio: “Le jour naissait dans la bocage”). Left alone, Marie thinks about the meaninglessness of money and position (“Par le rang et l’opulence”). She hears soldiers marching in the distance and is delighted when the whole regiment files into the hall. Tonio, Marie, and Sulpice are reunited. Tonio asks for Marie’s hand, declaring that Marie is his whole life (“Pour me rapprocher de Marie”), but the Marquise declares her niece engaged to another man and dismisses Tonio. Alone with Sulpice, the Marquise confesses the truth: Marie is her own illegitimate daughter whom she abandoned, fearing social disgrace.
Hortensius announces the arrival of the wedding party, headed by the Duchess of Krakenthorp. Marie refuses to leave her room, but when Sulpice tells her that the Marquise is her mother, the surprised girl declares that she cannot go against her mother’s wishes and agrees to marry a man that she does not love. As she is about to sign the marriage contract, the soldiers of the 21st regiment, led by Tonio, storm in to rescue their “daughter.” The noble guests are horrified to learn that Marie was a canteen girl, but they change their opinion when she describes her upbringing, telling them that she can never repay the debt she owes the soldiers. The Marquise is so moved that she gives her daughter permission to marry Tonio. Everyone joins in a final “Salut à la France.”

In 1993, Marilyn Gilbert, and her late husband Nathan Rundlett, set out to bring more opera performances to Santa Barbara. With the wild success of their first production, Die Fledermaus, Marilyn saw the power that an opera company could bring to the community. Now, thanks to Marilyn’s vision, commitment, and hard work, Opera Santa Barbara celebrates the conclusion of its 31st season!

We are excited to welcome back to the Opera Santa Barbara stage our beloved founder and friend, Marilyn Gilbert as The Duchess of Krakenthorp.

Kostis Protopapas was named General Director of Opera Santa Barbara in December 2017, after twoand-a-half seasons as Artistic Director.
During his time as Artistic Director and principal conductor, Kostis brought a unified vision to OSB’s musical and production values, strengthening the orchestra and chorus, engaging some of the country’s most promising young directors and singers, building a high-performing production team, and increasing focus on contemporary American opera. As General Director Kostis assembled Team OSB, a group of enthusiastic overachievers with a passion for innovation and the desire to strengthen the company’s bond with the community, who consistently exceed patrons’ expectations for programs, experiences and communications. Performance highlights from Kostis’ tenure include grand opera classics like Madama Butterfly, Manon, and Eugene Onegin as well as contemporary works like Daniel Catan’s Il Postino, the mariachi opera Cruzar la cara de la luna, and Laura Kaminsky’s As One. In the fall of 2022 the Santa Barbara Independent wrote: “From contemporary work to obscurities from the early 19th century, from staple repertoire to surprise elements, OSB continues to raise the bar on what an opera company can and should be, even in Santa Barbara.”
Between March 2020 and June 2021, under Kostis’ leadership Opera Santa Barbara remained active and fully staffed. It was the first performing arts organization in Santa Barbara to offer streaming programming, and one of only two opera companies in California to present three live operas in the 2020-21 season. Additionally, Opera Santa Barbara became an advocacy leader for the reopening of the performing arts, and funded live performances by local musicians through “Operation Eurydice”. For his work during the pandemic, Kostis was listed among the Santa Barbara Independent’s 2021 Local Heroes.
Before coming to Santa Barbara Kostis was the Artistic Director of Tulsa Opera since 2008. He previously was an Assistant Conductor with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera and Santa Fe Opera. At the Lyric Opera of Chicago, he also served as Assistant Chorus Master under Donald Palumbo for two seasons.
Born in Athens, Greece, Kostis Protopapas studied Archaeology and History of Art at the University of Athens before coming to the United States in 1993, on an Onassis Foundation scholarship, to study piano at The Boston Conservatory and conducting at Boston University. He became an American citizen in 2011. He loves living in Santa Barbara and enjoys sailing on the Santa Barbara Channel.

Director
Named as one of Musical America’s Top 30 Professionals of the Year in 2023, Josh Shaw is the Founding Artistic Director and CEO of Pacific Opera Project (POP), which has been described as “L.A.’s most exciting opera company.” Over the past fourteen seasons, Mr. Shaw has directed over 60 productions at POP, including The Rake’s Progress, Ariadne auf Naxos, The Mikado, Tosca: A Moving Production, and La boheme: AKA “The Hipsters”. A frequent librettist for English updates, his Star Trek parody, Abduction from the Seraglio and Nintendo inspired The Magic Flute AKA #SuperFlute have gained national attention and have been produced at multiple companies, shattering attendance records.
Since turning his attention to directing in 2011, Mr. Shaw has directed over 120 productions at companies including New Orleans Opera, Opera Orlando, Festival Opera, Gulfshore Opera, Opera Montana, Salt Marsh Opera, Opera Neo, Queen City Opera, Opera Orlando, and Opera in the Heights. Previous OSB productions include Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Pasquale, La scala di seta, El Gato con Botas, and Dr. Miracle.
Upcoming productions include Gianni Schicchi and The Pirates of Penzance at Salt Marsh Opera, Carmen and Cosi fan tutte at Gulfshore Opera, and Pagliacci, Fra Diavolo, Turandot, and Zorro at Pacific Opera Project.
